Hey there.
My Xperias screen is broken, the bottom half is dead but the touch is still working. The phone is fully functional except for this and that the slider is bent in the lower left corner a few millimetres. I am using my old K810i and I'm buying a new phone soon, but just leaving a functional Xperia to rot in a drawer seems a bit... uneconomical?
NOTE: I will NOT be repairing the screen. No, there is no insurance that covers a broken screen. No, I won't buy a replacement screen for 90 bucks. Don't suggest it, please.
What I am looking for are uses for this device now that I've decided not to repair it and rather get a new phone, so don't give me comments like "Why not fix it?", if you'd be kind. I want to utilize the phone as it is, maybe the keyboard can be connected to my PS3, maybe I can sell the phone, maybe I can use it as something else. All suggestions are welcome!
Thanks
/Felix
Anything else than selling it will require huge effort and good tech skills.
if you're not gonna fix it, sell it; it's basically useless. Give someone else the chance to resurrect it.

I agree with this. Possible use could be as a wireless router for your notebook, either for WLAN or for HSPA...

nueUSBKeyboard?
Also there's probably software that lets you use it as a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard.

Hm.. since there are devices with a 480x480 resolution on WM6.1, I am thinking it might be possible to cook a ROM that uses 480x480 instead of 480x800 and therefore the part of the screen that's still working would be quite usable.
I don't know if this would really work or if anyone has ever even tried it, it's just an idea.
YE, lets cook a rom for one device oO
[x]sell it
maybe a tech freak will love the opportunity!

I know what you can do, start your own phone store and use that X1 as a display model.

Thank you all for your tips. I'll try to sell it for 80 bucks or so, if I don't find using it for my PS3 EXTREMELY useful ^^

Hi,
The XDA Diamond of my little brother has some cracks between the display and the touch-surface. (see attachement)
I sent the device O2, but they (their service-partner) said "no warranty" and want ~ 300€ for the repair.
I just looked into the service-manual, because I thought about repairing it by myself.
But I think it's to difficult for me.
Now I wonder if anybody know a cheap mobile-shop, who can repair my Diamond.
I live in Cologne. My Brother (and my family) near Hannover. (both in Germany)
But Online-Shops are also good.
Thank you!
the screen is on ebay - item 230285205211. They also offer repairs
search for the dismantle guide (sorry don't have it to hand)
i also got cracks on my screen just like your brother....
I decided to order one of the replacement screen from ebay that comes with the needed tools to do it myself. i payed about 25 dollars including shipping and should receive it anytime from now.... If you r willing to wait , i ll post feedback on how hard it is to do it yourself.
About dismantling the diamond u ll find easily links from google.
Good luck!
how do the cracks actually appear in the first place?
was it the result of something the manufacturer might classify as "abuse" or "accidental damage"?
Often I pick up my phone (HTC Victor) and think that it feels quite fragile compared to something like the N95... so i treat it accordingly - ie, with a little more care..
I already looked throu the disamble guide.
@Sebienbon
It would be great, if you would post feedback and maybe photos of the repair process (step-by-step) wich are not in the disamble guide.
Meanwhile I will do one more try with the service partner.
@bobbified
It just happened. I think my brother carried the device in his trouser pocket (jeans) when he was riding by bike. But imo such a expensive phone should be strong enough.
Also theere is no damage on the outside.
@hays
Thanks. But I am not sure if this is the right part.
My LCD still works. All pixels are fine.
But the "whatever" between the LCD and touch-surface is cracked.
Thanks everybody so far
i just got the kit this morning but the screw driver is wrong( probably because of a different country , i live in denmark and the screen comes from asia... so i ll go buy a tiny screw driver that i miss and then give it a go
Hey,
I´ve got the same problem. But my Screen is more broken
Although it works.
I read the Service Manual too but im not sure if it works with this part:
http://cnn.cn/shop/touch-diamond-digitizer-p-2128.html
Because on the last Picture in the Manuel you see only the front part of the phone and nothing about the part linked above.
So I w`ont open it before I`m not sure whats exactly to do.
Also I asked some firms do make me an offer for repairing the mobile phone.
The best offer is 129,00 € or 169,00 € if the dismantling create scratches on the Display under the touch screen because they are glued.
Very expensive!
Now I´m waiting for your experiences too.

Man i wish i know of the manual to take this apart. You can fix it yourself if you take your time man, and dont be like me man. I took it apart thinking that the black tape under the battery is just tape!!!! And rip the mini-usb power ribbon. Man my heart sank.. So on that note if any of you guys know of a site or store to order parts from. please let me know also....
@lphar56
Is the diamond display made of glass and not the plastic stuff some other screens are made of???
The display is LCD so im guessing glas.. but it has a Touch Digitizer over the top.. that can scratch very easy and is only £15 off ebay

HTC diamond screen replacement
Hey guys!
AFAIK the cracks that appear are in the glass of the touch-screen-unit.
so i try to figure out how to replace this part only.
Is it glued to the LCD?
Which glue sould be used to fix it again?
Or does it even come with the screen?
I'd like to post a guide here if it works, so please help me answering this last question!
Also, replacing only the touchscreen would lower the repair cost to a third...
Thanks!
Still no update?? on the steps to remove digitizer?

I think it is not covered by the warranty so there is 3 solution:
1- you have an insurance for your phone which can cover this damage
2- you pay to repair it
3- you buy a new phone
I feel you.. I dropped mine from the 3rd floor and it died :/
Luckily I managed to get a new one from my insurance.
If it's only a home insurance you've got, make up a story that you dropped it at home somewhere
u might say u dropped it from a 3m high table
anyway i hope u luck buddy i would feel bad if my xperia dropped from 2nd floor.

AFAIK insurance covers faulty devices, or when they brake by themselves.
Just pay for it to be fixed.

I remembered that the store guys offered me insurance, but I declined.
I can fix anything software related (xda ftw ) and if the hardware brakes, I'll just send it to a random phone repair shop. No need to pay huge cash for insurance.

We can rebuild him....
My Xperia fell off my motorcycle and got run over by a car coming behind. I got a new casing and display from one of the Hong Kong parts vendors and rebuilt it myself from a YouTube video on how to assemble/disassemble X1.
It's like BRAND NEW!
Give it a shot. Check out the YouTube video first to see if you think you can pull it off.
Good luck!

I never had any of the cracking, peeling and w/e as well. Just treat your phone better peeps. That's the secret .
mine's gotten pretty beat up. how hard is it to a) find replacements for and b) replace the:
housing/body
digitizer
trackball
and could a noob do it? the only other device I've done a case swap on was a psp 3000.
and I don't have a warranty, so that isn't an issue.
and how do I know if something like this is authentic?

I don't think you could just walk into any store and find a housing for the G1 or nearly any phone for that matter. Maybe a wireless shop that deals with all types of phones might be able to get there hands on it.
As far as knowing whether that ebay ad is authentic, you really can't say. I would contact the seller and ask him personally. Also, 22 bucks isn't bad at all.
anyone else?
I'm also interested in this issue as I want to switch from black to white. Anybody?
bump...............
It has to say OEM in the description (original equipment manufacturer) if you want it to be authentic. Here's a link on dissasembly. It's straight from HTC

ooh, well I took apart a psp once for the same reason and I broke the connector for the screen's ribbon cable (apparently super glue is not a conductor b/c i was able to super glue it back on and it worked from then on) but I guess I now know to make sure to try moving the little lever in both directions and not to apply force.
If anyone has ever taken apart a psp, how does this compare to it?

What would you rate the difficulty of replacing the entire housing on the G1 ? Please advise me..
I am getting ready to undertake this task as well. I ordered a complete replacement from Hong Kong OEM branded, the works. I will be documenting the process step by step, and may even make a youtube video, and link them here, to contribute to the HTC G1 community. It'll be at least 3 weeks before it comes, though, most likely. If you haven't done it by then, look for my work.

...................
i was thinking about doing this but i never really got to it because none of the sellers had a manual on how to do it. ive taken apart ipods and whatnot but i love my g1 and i really dont want to mess it up :l.
Even worse, its a MDA Compact V.
Basically, I got the newton rings issue a few months ago and after reading threads on here, tried the duct tape trick which worked a treat....for about a month.
Then the issue came back of the screen not responding, so I continually used the tape to fix the screen. It got to the point where I had done it that many times, I was having to carry a roll of tape around with me, and the front of the front facia began to lift on the left hand side of the phone each time I did it.
It got to the point where I didnt need the tape anymore, I could just use my fingernail to pull the layers apart which would make the screen respond again.
However, recently I noticed a spec of dust under the screen. I put up with it for a while but last week I decided to try and get it out.
I stupidly lifted the layers apart and blew into the phone. This caused the touchscreen to behave very erratically and did not move the dust.
I was a bit tipsy at the time and actually lifted the whole of the front off the phone (thinking I could clean the screen and stick the front back down) but now the phone will not respond to touch no matter what I do.
I was thinking of trying to replace the front parts myself, but as mentioned its a Compact V not a D2, so the shape of the front of the handset is slightly different and I cannot seem to find anywhere that I can order the front facia.
I've got a lock on the phone, so I cant even flash it if I wanted to sell it as 'broken'
Can anyone think of ANYTHING that could help?
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
You can flash your phone if you just put the Rom on a storage card and update it from there, and new digitizers are just 4 dollars, so just put a new one in ( or I can do it for you if you pay for the costs) I've replaced my digitizer about 3 times now... and im pretty good at it XD
i really hate to say it. but i think its just time to buy a new phone. I know money may be an issue. i dont have the cash to fork out for new phones either. but if this happened to me. i would do my best to back everything up. then just buy a cheap phone untill i saved up . i have an htc pure right now saving up for an evo 4g. I just upgraded my contract so i will have to pay full price for the evo 4g around $500.00 . unless ya can limp this one along . but from what it sounds like is its about time to bury that one ...
devices messing up does suck, im sorry..
Good Luck
Thanks guys.

Yes it is possible. When flashing from SD you don't have to use your screen in any way. Have a look in the ROM-Threads, u will find the way to flash and some great "how-to"s.

I believe if you search on screen replacement threads they have stated where they were purchsed.
Also, you can use Pocket Controller Pro or My Mobiler to access your screen from your PC.
hey guys, I have a really quick Q for u. Is it possible to only replace the Digitizer/Glas on the One? They sell em for really cheap and because my screen still works fine after droping it (hell even the Digitizer still works!) I hoped that i can just replace it. The search doesn't show any result when I type in things like Display Digitizer etc. Did anyone attempted this? I saw some people replacing just the Glass on a Galaxy S4 on YouTube but there are only a few really poor videos on YouTube about the HTC One.

No, don't bother trying. The digitiser/glass is fused/bonded to the LCD and is very, very difficult to separate, so you'd just be wasting your time. Buy the whole LCD/digitiser assembly, and you'll be good

it's not a matter of Faith it's just facts .. have you ever separated a digitizer from glass or an lcd ? it's an 11 on a scale of 10 in difficulty
if you tried it 100 times you would get maybe one working one.
and you have one chance to get it right .. good luck
I went to a cellphone repair center yesterday to get an iPhone's digitizer replaced, and I asked one of the guys who worked there if they fixed HTC One's too, and he said "no those phones are on our blacklist, you try to fix one thing you'll end up breaking something else." I think it's best to no try to open up this device. I know how you feel though, you really want to try to fix it on your own, but I can tell you from experience, some devices aren't meant to come apart, let alone put back together properly.
