I have T-mobile and just today i ordered a Rogers HTC Magic from Ebay, However after doing some more research i read i wont be able to use 3g With tmobile but rather on edge.... Im really mad at the moment and guess i will have to resell the phone....
but can anyone comfirm this??? and also is there any HTC Magic that runs on Tmobile 3g frequencies that has the 288MB Ram as well.....
I'm in the opposite scenario. I have an ADP1 that's only on T-Mobile's 3G frequencies, but I'm on Rogers. I don't think the ADP1 has 288MB of RAM though, so it's as fast as a standard Dream. Although it has a kickass battery cover.
Maybe we should trade, haha. Edge hurts.
i'm in the same situation i'm on Rogers with a T-Mobile G1 and cant access 3G only 2G.
I just wanted to confirm this is a hardware differnce correct?
Theres no way around this like changing the rom or software on the phone so resolve the issue?
I know this thread is old, but there's no answer to this yet...
Is it possible to install the Rogers Dream radio on a T-Mobile G1 to use the Rogers 3G speeds, or will I be stuck with EDGE speeds? Is there any other way this can be done?

In the past HTC disabled 3G support on the S710 and S730 for use in the US because no US carrier 'supported' this phone. So although both were decent phones we couldn't use them at EDGE speeds.
Does anyone know if the Touch Diamond quad-band model works at 3G speeds with the US AT&T network?
Thanks!
Bill
Oh yes, beautifully.. Better yet, the Diamond is able to use HSDPA with AT&T, which is faster than 3G, as alleged as 3.5G
Mine is working too!
Didn't work at first but I woke up this morning and the E turned into an H.
Thanks for the feedback!!
I bought the unlocked US version from Best Buy, they matched web price, and I had the phone up and running on AT&T very quickly. There is an auto setup for AT&T users. Solid performance, H in my area, auto changes elsewhere.
It can beat my home dsl speeds while tethering when I am on the road. That rocks pretty hard imo. Just be aware that the euro version of the diamond which can be found on the internet and in the used market cannot be flashed to light up the US 3G freqs, it really is a hardware issue.
Does anyone know if this will also work with T-Mobiles 3G network or is the frequency on this phone not capable? I want to check before I bite the bullet on picking one up. Thanks!
Unfortunatly, it won't due to different bandwidth. AT&T uses UMTS 850/1900, whereas T-Mobile uses 1700. More details can be found in "US 3G First Look" in this thread.
Hi everyone--
I have an unmodded, "unlocked" at&t tilt that has a t-mobile gsm sim chip in it. I'm still running the WM6 that came in it, and can't seem to get access to the 3G speeds I know this thing is capable of. I've tried numerous software apps to "force" the phone to go 3G, to no avail. T-Mobile customer "support"--HAA! tells me I need a t-mobile phone to be able to take advantage of the 3G speeds. Needles to say, I feel this is a bunch of malarkey. T-Mobile put out this phone, did they not, and called it the "MDA Vario III"? Is there a rom for the mda that I could flash this thing with so I could get the 3G speeds? Or another rom perhaps? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the malarkey is the truth! Because T-Mobile runs its 3G network on a different band than the Tilt is capable of! Sorry, this also effects me as I am a T-Mobile customer using a Tilt as well! My advice is to use Opera mini 4.2 for your internet browsing it is very fast on the Edge network!
The T-Mobile you refer to is European
It does not run on the same 3G as the US T-Mobile. The US T-Mobile uses 1700 Mhz and 2100 Mhz, I believe. The Tilt does not use the 1700 Mhz band. There was a rumor going around that there would be a new version of the Kaiser (KAIS140) that would use the US T-Mobile 3G bands but it was never released for sale. I don't think it will since it is pretty much at the end of the life cycle of the phone. They (HTC) have moved on to newer models with more features. If you would like to use the US 3G and live in an area with 3G, The T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) uses T-Mo 3G and has its own section on this forum.
bleh. newer models should still freaking tilt. that is the coolest thing about this phone. and it's pretty solid construction. my friend has had his over a year and its still going strong.

I thought the Tilt accessed 3G through it's tri band frequencies 850/1900/2100Mhz so that it could connect to most 3G networks worldwide, making it a world business tool for users?

True but T-Mobile uses the 1700 for upload and 2100 for download. ATT uses 1900 for both.
So I am currently looking for a G1 to buy.
It will be bought from ebay, and basicaly my questions are.
They say unlocked and that the mobile will work for any GSM network, does this mean no 3G network? My simcard allows my current cellphone to go in 3G and I woundering if this would change with the new phone.
And are there any good tips for me? To look out for while I'm browsing the G1 auctions and stuff?
Thanks in advance, Bread. <3
Unless you end up buying some kind of crazy G1 knockoff or a broken phone, it will work on 3G. Most likely 1700AWS (US T-Mo) and 2100 (pretty much the rest of the world).
Ofcourse I will aim for the real G1 ^^
No point in buying a chinese fake now is there? ^^
So should I aim for an unlocked one or can I do it myself?
(even though I wouldn't have access to any other sim than my very own.)
I'm not sure but I think I've heard of issues getting 3G with AT&T

The G1 will not work on AT&T's 3G.
Be aware that AT&T and rogers in north america operate on 1900mhz and 850 for 3g as T-mobile uses 1700 and 2100. Not sure about overseas as they use 2100 too. You would have to ask someone else about that.
I have been a long time Tilt/Kaiser user with ATT. I have an opportunity to get my hands on a friend's G1 for dirt cheap. I understand that T-Mobile's G1 will not support ATT's 3G to it's fullest extent. I'm crossing my fingers that there is a ray of hope that with research and future ROMs that someday the G1 will be able to support an ATT sim? I guess my question is...Is this a hardware restriction for ATT, or can a ROM make this a fully functional phone for an ATT user?
"T-Mobile's G1 will not support ATT's 3G to it's fullest extent" -- More like to any extent. I would think it would be as easy as sim unlocking the phone through t-mobile (have your friend, the owner of the contract, call), then pop the att sim in and change some web settings.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. If you SIM unlock the G1 and pop an ATT sim in, it will work 100% perfectly-- with the exception that it will only get EDGE. If you're asking can a ROM [sic] make the G1's 3G radios work with ATT, the answer is no. Never. Physically impossible. There are some wild reports of people having their G1s getting some 3G roaming in certain areas with their ATT sims, but these are rare exceptions, not the norm.
If you want a device shaped like a Dream that gets ATT 3G, consider a Rogers Dream. It has the proper 850/1900 MHz 3G transceivers for ATT 3G.

This answers the question. The TMO G1 has specialized transcievers that are tuned for ONLY the TMO network, which is why unlocked TMO G1s dont get 3G on any other network. So no, with your friend's G1, unless ATT decides to change their G1 carrier bands, there is no hope of getting 3G with it ever. Its a hardware problem, not a software problem. However, as suggested, if you want to be able to get 3G on ATT, get your hands on a Rogers G1.
Hello i need to know if im supposed to have full 3g speed using my rogers dream on telus network. It is rooter and simunlocked and i use vannon rom. My 3g speed is at 500 kbps max and most of the time its lower . i test it using speedtest.net application.
thx fos your help!
What to you mean you're 'supposed' to get 'full' 3g speed? I think you're referring to Tmobile G1s not getting 3G for Rogers and Telus bands, so yes, you're getting 3G.
The 3G speed you get depends on a large number of factors including location, it is not the same everywhere. Unless there's a fault with your phone (highly unlikely) there's no reason why the speed you get will be less than what everyone else gets. Maybe Telus has a ****ty network?
i whas wondering if it can be a firmware or hardware trouble i whas talking about rogers dream not t-mobile i know they dont work. its just that my 3g speed is very very bad .
Most carriers have crappy speeds, it's highly unlikely that your phone is the issue.
