Hello!
I tend to play around with different ROMs and sometimes I have to wipe. There are many backup applications out there (MyBackup Pro, Backup for root users, Astro). But they all backup just the application and not the settings and the data. For instance, if you use the email application K9, after wiping you have to enter all your email accounts again.
In http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=511835, there is a description how to manually backup the data and settings of 3rd party applications. But it is a manual procedure using ADB. Is there an application to do this in a more convenient way? Or is there a backup application that also backups the data and settings?
Cheers!
Backup for root users backups also data.. You have to chose Data backup, that is different from apk backup

Tried IE7 and FF3.1... unable to find a download shortcut/link for the Backup program on your site...
@Al Edson: You can find Backup for Root Users on the web at
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.bg.smsbk and if you go to the Market just do a search for Backup for Root and it will popup.
@blackgin: Thank you for your quick answer and specially a BIG thank you for Backup for Root Users. I have to confess that the app is so powerful that I had problems understanding all the functions
I checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=527997 about surviving a data wipe but I still struggled with the many options. Is there a kind of help for the app? If not, I could contribute some text for you to check and use it as you wish.
Cheers!

Attempting to root the phone, but apprently unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone, how would I backup/restore and settings? such as handcent, contacts, apps etc
This might not help since I haven't ran non rooted android in over a year. I do know for the apps you can use app manager or any other type. I use app manager to backup app to sd. Then when when root just install app manager first then mass install all the apps I was running. also handy when setting up app 2sd
use titanium backup to backup everything.... and then restore later...

root is required to run titanium backup...seems he may be in a catch-22.
I assume all of your contacts are sync'd with your google account, yeah? If so, do this...
look up wavesecure in the market. Install it and set it up. Accounts are free for only a week or so longer. This is an app you should have anyways. Once setup, backup your sms/mms. If you don't care about your texts, then ignore this setup. Once you are setup again, install this app. If your phone ever goes missing, you will hate yourself for not using it.
Now move forward with your unlocking, rooting, flashing, etc. Once you are setup, purchase a backup solution (my backup or titanium) and take full advantage of it Of course, setup wavesecure to restore if you backup up your texts.
oops... my bad... guess I wasn't thinking... or reading properly...

Will batch work on the TB free version?
If I remember correctly - in free version you can batch backup, but you can't batch restore, or the batch restore is limited speed.
When you batch restore with the free version, you have to confirm each one. Fun.

Thanks Man
Menu > Batch > Backup all user apps + system data : is there any difference between this and a nandroid backup? i mean does it make an image with EVERYTHING you have on your phone?
No it doesn't make an image of everything on the phone like a nandroid backup
A nandroid backup backs up the system, data, cache, and a few other things like ext and recovery depending on how you set it but a titanium backup just backs up apps and data (which are on the data and cache partitions).
You can also create an update.zip to put in your recovery folder and flash that way too. You can set a schedule to back up new, new versions or all. IMHO, pay the money. It has helped me in several instances. You can convert system to data or vice versa, un/attach apps to market and my favorite is you can clean your Dex right from the app.
Somewhere way back I thought folks were having issues restoring System with TB and recommended just doing apps/data--
Right or Wrong?
I like MyBackUp Pro as a quicker (non-nandroid) bu of system/sms/mms/call logs/home screens/settings etc

Well, the issue is that some of the restored settings were conflicting with what was in there. If you restore system back to the same version (of CM or Android), then it should be problem free. But if you are restoring between nightlies of CM or major releases of stock, then options may have changed and restoring *can* cause conflicts that result in funky operations or bootloops. This doesn't happen all the time, but it has happened enough to me that I don't recommend it.
My recommendation is to just backup all your apps and app data (I also include TB's backup of wifi access points, bluetooth pairings, google accounts, call logs and sms messages). It really doesn't take too long to go and check all your settings. Plus it gives you the opportunity to see what new features were added.
And in all honesty, I am not sure MyBackup Pro would be any different in the above... both just backup the data and restore it. I think if one were to cause an issue, the other one would as well.
Thanks for info bass,
I never restore system with TB, only backup/restore apps--no issues
I started using My BackUp before rooted, so as to have a bu of things if root went wrong. Just kept using it
Never had an issue restoring system with My BackUp, even after a month of nightlies
Main thing I like it for is Home Screens--saves time after fresh flash

That is definitely a benefit to using a 3rd-party launcher. I use ADW EX and everything for that app is saved in the app data, so as soon as I restore the app I am back to normal (well, except for my widgets and the background, but there are only two widgets that I use). But I do definitely sympathize on not wanting to redo all your settings. I hate it when I forget something simple like changing the wifi back to never turn off.
Agreed--
I use ADW with CMN's but not EX. Haven't looked real close at its restore capabilities. But, My Back Up does CM/Sense/MIUI restores with Home Screens with no problems
Just comfortable with it--
titanium backup restored my adw ex just fine minus the widgets.
thank you i was looking for that.
Ok I keep seeing people sayiing to backup apps+data but be careful about system data. Well every time I do an upgrd to the new sre and restore my titbu and I am constantly having to redo my gmail stuff and isp email stuff. I have accounts checked in the backup section.
Can someone that does stuff like this regularly post like a nice simple howto with good steps as to what to check in titbu so that doing something in titbu doesn't bork something when we flash the new sre. Its getting old having to put my gmail info and isp info in every flash to get that stuff back.
So a 104 views and not one offer of help. Well guess I take that as noone knows much about titanium backup to help a poor soul
New to Android myself (2 days), and I am using TiBU as well (seems to be everyone's favorite for now). I had the same Q you did and basically went off the list on the developer's page for the app:
http://matrixrewriter.com/android/
Here is a partial copy/paste from that site so we keep the pertinent instructions here in this thread anyway:
Tips & Suggestions for using Titanium Backup:
When you start Titanium Backup on a new ROM, if you have any doubt about your busybox version, it is highly recommended that you click the "Problems?" button before doing any backup or restore !
Don't forget to verify your backups (Click MENU - Batch) to ensure that your backups are OK.
You need to reboot after restoring system items (eg: Contacts, SMS, Settings, etc) for the changes to take effect. If you backup/restore across very different ROMs, I advise to be cautious and only include the system items you really need to preserve.
You can easily create a custom apps list by creating a Label in Apps Organizer, then going back to Titanium Backup, clicking "MENU" and then "Filters" and finally, selecting the Label you want. Your apps list will then be filtered just the way you want
If you backup the same app several times, Titanium Backup will save SD card space by storing each apk version only once.
After restoring your apps, you can run the Market Doctor to verify their Market links. If Market Doctor reports everything as okay, yet your apps are still not listed in "My Downloads", try to search for them in the Market. If they show as "Installed", it confirms that the links are okay, but your Market needs a refresh: just install any app from the Market, and the "My Downloads" section will be refreshed !
If you want to remove a system app, first you can try to freeze it and see if everything still works fine. Once you've gained more confidence that you don't need it, just go ahead and un-install that system app.
How to make your first backup:
- Thanks seanowns / xda-developers
Verify that Titanium Backup has started without warning and that your busybox is OK
Click the Backup/Restore tab
Click Menu (the button), Batch
Click "Backup all user apps"
Let it run, then go back
Individually backup the system data you want. That is most green-colored items. This will be bookmarks, call log, calendar, launcher, WiFi, etc.
Now your backups are in the "TitaniumBackup" directory on your SD card.
How to restore your backups after installing a ROM (if you wiped your phone):
Download Titanium Backup from Market
Click the Backup/Restore tab
Click Menu (the button), Batch
Click "Restore all missing apps + system data
Reboot your phone
It's done ! The only thing you may have to adjust is usually your wallpaper/widgets.
Hi, Im getting really interested in changing my rom to a Cyanogen updated rom however how can I save for example my password safe app and its data. I can Use asto file manager and save all my apps to my sd card, but what about all the data on the apps themselves. I have alot of information on my password save app which stores sensative information. I dont want to re-enter all the information again.
Thanks
Use Titanium Backup.
Does your password save app have an export function? I guess it would have to be password protected itself, but does it?
If it doesn't, you'll want to get Titanium Backup after rooting anyway. It's way better than apps like Astro at backing up, because it backs up apk, the market link (so it shows up in the Market > My Downloads after restoring), and it saves app data. Note: when changing ROMs, don't backup/restore "system data," only backup "user apps" (it will backup app data as well). Once you open Titanium Backup, press Menu > Batch > Backup all user apps.
I haven't tried it myself, but MyBackup Root basically offers the features of the paid version (one-click restore of all apps+data). It's just not as feature packed, but if you're just backing up for a ROM switch then it should do the job.
I would backup with both apps. Then when you have CyanogenMod, try restoring with MyBackup Root first. If it works, great. In case it doesn't for some reason you always have Titanium Backup.
Since the topics exist for other phones and are a bit dated - I figured I'd ask you guys - what's the best/easiest way to backup user data before wiping and flashing a new kernel-base ROM? For example, not only would I like my game progress saved/moved, but my SMS, Call log, contacts (including the 'merged' data if possible), homescreen widgets, preferences?
I have TWRP, root, and Titanium Backup Pro - but I always seem to forget something and end up either starting over, losing the data, or trying to pull it out of a backup file.

I use to use Mybackup Pro from play store. It is a paid app but it does a good job. I can't use its full capabilities at the moment because it requires root access.

For homescreen widgets, preferences etc, you need make a nandroid backup and do a restore DATA after the flash of rom, but you can have issue
For sms i use the backup of sms app and the same for the contacs or google
