Why can't i safely remove when i am on active scyn ?
Because it's already set to be removed safely. You can safely unplug your phone without data loss. It's like USB keys, they are set by default to be removed without preliminary actions without causing problems, this for a more confortable and practical use. Can you imagine how annoying it would be to click every time on "safely remove.." when you want to unplug the topaz?
As of XP you can just pull out your USB devices!
You don't need to remove them savely anymore.
since when did this happen
the actions required by the system for safe removal of usb storage in xp are not enabled by default
something by the name of write caching or something i dont remember at the moment,
as of XP maybe, you have safely remove. If I remember correctly, if you connect TD 2 to the PC as a disk drive, you have the safely remove. While in active sync ... Searched just about every menu ...
Could it be, that there is no "safe removal" if you are syncing with ActiveSync? All data transfer is done while syncing - then you get the message "synced" and you simply pull it out, because everything is done.
The "safe removal" icon in the taskbar is only visible, if you are in disk-mode.
as a good tip. While active sync, I have found it very hard to copy files. I mean really really hard. Many errors, many times disconnected etc. So a reason there is no safely remove is because active sync is not made for file transfer. Might be ...

And I have tried various programs, some registry edits, hacks, etc - and I think I have settled on the configuration that I want.
During that time, i have installed and uninstalled quite a bit of software - some on the SD card and others into memory.
I think, at this point, what I woud like to do is clear storage (or is it hard reset - or are they the same thing?) and then reinstall the apps that I intend to use, making sure that I install things like Battery Saver and HTC_Home in memory, while installing less critical apps like Google Maps back onto the card.
I guess my question is - what, if anything, should I take care to back up - and what is the best way to do it?
It looks like my contacts and appointments will be restored when I reestablish my Exchange Server connection. I assume that anything which is already on the card is safe, but what about apps that are installed on the card - should they be uninstalled prior to the reset and then reinstalled?
I believe I have read that the PagePool hack will survive?
Any tips, tricks, advice that might help prevent this turning into an all-weekend project?
Thanks!
I got a captivate about a month ago, I am pretty much illiterate when it comes to techno speak. I was able to root my phone, have super user icon and downloaded "astro" for management which I learned from her. All I want is to wireless tether my device so myself and roommates can use with our pc's. When I download the wireless app it shows up in astro, but doesn't ask for permission, it simply says for security reasons it blocks apps not from the market. Can someone patiently and slowly walk me thru the process. Keeping in mind that a lot of the computer speak I don't understand.
You need to enable sideloading. I never did it but I know there's a thread about it in development. Before I flashed to froyo I used this to sideload apps: http://www.androidcentral.com/sideload-android-apps-all-you-want-sideload-wonder-machine
Follow the instructions on that page to install the app.

Very. Just make sure usb debugging is enabled, copy the apk to your desktop, browse to the file, and install.

This is where my problems come in, with my lack of knowledge I don't know how to connect and move the files from my pc to my phone. I know how to turn off the usb debugging and plug in, but am lost after that. Pleas don't think me a total idiot, just need a complete walk thru. To be honest, I have no honest idea how I got as far as I did. I downloaded the 1 click lag fix from the market to root the phone, so I got lucky to find that instead of going thru the pc process. Is there any very simple step by step walk thru? Be patient with me, atleast I'm trying right.
Also what about loading directly to the phone?
To mount the phone to the pc (I'm not sure what you have your usb connection set to but when plugging it in if it gives you an option choose mass storage), pull down the notification bar and select mount.
You'll get one or two removable drives (two if you have an external sd card), select the internal one (should have a DCIM folder) navigate to the download folder, copy the apk you downloaded to your desktop, and then pull down the notification bar again and dismount the phone.
Launch the sideload wonder machine, browse, navigate to desktop, select the apk, install.
Note: You'll need the drivers installed and that can be found in the development forum.

I am at work now but am going to try as soon as I get home. Thank you for your help, its very much appreciated.
Look at the captivate wiki, it has like four methods for side loading.
And dump astro, buy root explorer.

Hi all
So here's my problem, I smashed my galaxy S screen (ink all over the screen).
1. a short time ago i could see certain parts of the screen like the top horizontal bar and saw that touch and tactil and all functions still work
--> what is the operational risk of buying a new screen and installing it myself ?
2. i got the system folder on my computer using ADB
--> how can i use it ? i have the possibility of buing another phone, cani simply push contacts or messages to that one from my computer
3. i'd like to make a titanium backup but i can't see a thing.
--> is there a way to get control on my phone through screen sharing like a vnc ?
my last titanium backup is a bit old, and ll i want are my contacts (i forgot to sync with google, wont let that happen again)
thanks in advance for any help suggestions or solutions
crazy
1. I've heard it being do-able, but have not done this myself. Im sure there will be a tutorial of some kind online (youtube perhaps)
2.I'm not sure where the contacts are kept but yes as Titanium backup does very much the same. It saves the contacts etc
3.Two things being an option here, TV-out, if you can successfully get to the menu and have a cable, if not the nokia one comes quite cheaply.
Secondly someone mentioned Android screencast. Haven't used it myself, but sounds like its worth researching more about if you can get usb debug active. (It doesn't require scrolling up, so i can give you approximate directions to try enable it)

USB debugging enables control of the phone via the computer using ADB and utilities such as "Android Screencast".

Hi all,
I am a total noob in these matters but from what I understand, in order to root my phone I need to unlock the bootloader. The problem I have is that I have used my phone for a few weeks now and have some very important data (app data) along with the way I set the layout of the phone etc. I was wondering, if there is any back up app that would allow me to literally copy everything from my phone i.e. the layout of apps, app data (very important), pics in different folders etc.
I know Titanium Backup would be ideal but from what I gather, my phone needs to be rooted before I can use that so it wouldn't make sense for me to use that. Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance and apologies if this has been posted in the wrong area.
I think Helium can do that. (I am not sure). You just need to install an app on your computer and to enable USB debugging in developer's menu in settings.
To enable developer's menu :
Go to about phone in settings, press 7 times on "build number" and you will see the developer's menu in the settings.
For contacts and agenda, you can add them to your google account. For the SMS, I think it is impossible. And even if it were possible, it is not that important
I hope I didn't write this post too late...
Is the built in anti virus on the P9 sufficient or is it advisable to download another one.
Any advice please.?
1. There are no viruses on Android
2. Most of apps that call them self anitivirus are nothing more but crap that beside sucking memory and battery do nothing
3. Most of problems that people call "virus" is nothing more but some crappy made app that mess up phone performance or download few other crappy apps in background like lockscreen or cleaner.
4. Build in antivirus on Huawei is just icon that do nothing... because it dont have anything to do, BECAUSE look at point 1.
Im using android for almost... forever of it existing, I was rooting and giving free access to all apps i could, I once did test and clicked all ads and installed all shady apps I could find, give them root access... and beside few more crappy apps that they downloaded in background... NOTHING.
Even my router logs didnt show any weird data that was send/recived in phone.
All you can get on your phone is viruses that are made for PC, that will transfer them self to it when you connect it to PC, this is only example that I know that someone had related to "viruses", but it was not even made for android...
All you need to do, to keep your device in good shape and safe, is to keep it clean, use build in cleaner that is good for removing trash files, and keeping an eye on permissions of apps, if app dont need internet access or contact list, remove that permission.
Simple as that...
This is pretty much it. Don't be the user that installs 5 cleaning apps / anti-viruses and wonder why the phone is so slow. I see users every week that slow their phone down with this stuff.
