Widgets use battery - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i would like to know if on the hero rom(or any other rom) do widgets drain battery? obviously widgets that use network do but i am wondering about the ones like the messaging, photo and mail widgets that do not need network. thanks in advance.

I think so because they refresh at automated rates correct? So when it refreshes it will use some battery

Any widgets that self update or refresh require data connections, and since using a data connection is the most battery-intensive feature of the G1, widgets will take battery.
Actually, anything that has to be constantly updated (like a clock widget) or anything running in the background also takes battery, as it has to process CPU.

[Q] Icon Packs, desk top Viz and Battery Drain?

Okay I am slightly new to the theming scene and have been tinkering around with my HTC Desire 2.2 with ADW Launcher, Go Launcher and Launcher Pro. It is safe to say I have ADD with the look of my phone.
Anyway and perhaps its just me, but I have noticed my battery draining faster since I have been using icons packs lately with desktop visualizer. Which basically make each icon a widget right? Now it is my understanding that widgets drain the battery. The stock launcher is on blank, so nothing is running on it, I also use minimal widgets to try and reduce battery drain too.
But I thought the widgets used by icons shouldn't add to power usage as they aren't "running" is that correct?
Thanks for any input!

Lag from bookmark widget?

The bookmark sync function of Honeycomb's browser is pretty sweet. I've got about 30 of them, so is really handy.
At this number of links, the bookmark widget slows the device down which makes everything jittery and slow. Screen animations, app startups, etc, etc
Removing the widget resolves this as does reducing the number of bookmarks.
I can totally live without the widget, I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this.
Are you using the stock launcher? I have found issues relating to lag when the honeycomb widgets are used with 3rd party launchers like ADW and LPP...
stock launcher
All scrollable widgets with a lot of data use a lot of system resources, as the images are cached. This definitely causes lag!
I loved the LPP bookmarks widget, but with 50 or more links it would cause lags on my otherwise lightning fast Galaxy Tab.
Try putting some of your bookmarks into folders. Then the os will have less bookmarks to load and wont have any dynamic logos to worry about u til you open that folder. I had bookmarks and 3 mail widgets, got rid of two of the mail widgets and i saw a big improvement

samsung widgets drain battery?

I've been using samsung calendar clock widget for a week or so now and I've noticed considerable battery drain!!
I've removed the widget and everything's back to normal.
Has anyone experienced something like this?
I mean you would expect samsung widgets to be perfectly optimized for their own devices..
Well, widgets do drain bit of battery, set them to less frequent or manual sync. Also, I find the phone laggy after using 3-4 big widgets.
if u using only samsung calendar clock widget and there a BIG difference on ur battery drain it's not normal.
I think it also depends on a lot of other stuffs like, your firmware, your rom, and what kind of widget etc...
I've tested and tested and it's definitely samsung widget (calendar clock).
With it, battery drains in 6-7 hours with normal usage, and in battery check, it shows Android OS more than 50 percent..
I'm on JVK stock rom..
Maybe samsung has not yet finished optimizing their widgets or something..
I guess I'll have to use similar apps for now.
Anyone knows good apps/widgets like that?
Any help appreciated!

[Q] Question about widgets

I have widgetsoid and a number of other widgets that can be placed on the homescreen.
my question is do they consume / eat a lot of juice, sample widgets are like ringer switcher, wifi/bluetooth switcher etc etc...
it's nice to have them ready and handy but i'm thinking if they will eat up my juice quickly.

widgets and MIUI

Has anyone else had problems with widgets?
I have two widgets that act flaky:
wifiwidget - supposed to show current wifi connection, it's flaky.
Also use to turn on/off/switch wifi connection. (which works)
screen on widget - widget to force the screen on. doesn't seem to work at all.
It's handy for when I"m eating or something - and way easier than digging through menus.
Any other personal favorite widgets? big screen ones (like full month calendars)
are quite nice on the MIX.
I have the following working on the EU ROM (TWRP'd, Su'd and Xposed)
WSJ widget
NY Times widget
Newton Email inbox
Dark Skies weather
Fenix (Twitter)
All are working well, after a factory reset and re-rooting ( I was getting tremendous G Play FC alerts)
How is your Mix set.up?
Cheers
J
Sent from my MIX using XDA Labs
widgets that update are getting frozen by the stupid battery saving and security measures built into MIUI. freeze those apps and/or follow the instructions on forbes and talked about in various threads to make sure you get instant notifications. its the same concept.
can't wait till someone comes up with a pure android build so i can get rid of MIUI
