So, I am at JF 1.4.2. What are my options at this time to get the latest and greatest on my G1?
Also, can I partition the card using 'fdisk' and format in Linux and then use the card in my G1? I am getting a class6 16G card, so I want to put apps on there. Is apps2sd already included in some builds?
Please don't say search. I searched and my head almost exploded after looking the ginormantic threads.
If someone has a thread that provides summary or howto update from JF 1.4.2, kindly point me to that.
Really appreciate your help!

SEARCH! No, just kidding. Basically, take your pick of the available roms, make sure you have the correct SPL and newest radio flashed, then wipe and flash your rom of choice. Its that simple. As far as the apps to sd issue, most of the roms have their own thing going with that. My recommendation would be to check out either marcusmaximus' thread on the subject or grab lucidrem's app from the market to help out.
Other than that, good luck, dont brick your phone, and enjoy!
Oh god I wish i had jashu's search pictures. Use cyanogen's ROM. auto apps to sd. Incredibly fast. Stable. Awesome.

You can definitely partition the SD card using fdisk and linux--there's a walkthrough here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-502095.html
I recommend using the cyanogen roms because they automatically handle the apps2SD for you and are fast and reliable. There are also several themes available if you are into that.
Thank you so much for your responses! I think the consensus seems to be cyanogen's rom. I think I am heading to cyanogen's ginormic thread and figure things out. Thanks again! I will come back if I need help...

Hello all, first off this is the absolute BEST PDA forum around. And Ive found just about all information I need. I JUST NOW successfully HardSPLed my device! W00T! Ive looked around and cant answer my last question though, I want to use a rom that is a WM6.1 bc I want threaded text, ive currently got wm6 on my T-Mo Wing (Herald) or whatever you guys like to call it lol. Do I need to do anything before flashing the WM6.1 Rom? Any suggestions on what Rom to use? I really like the idea of touch flo! Any help is appreciated!
Okay, Sir.
First off all you should know that I'm kinda new to the XDA scene as well but I've manage to flash my device right at the first attempt. What you have to do is following:
1. HardSPL your device
2. Check bootloader if process was successful
3. Get the RUU and put your *.nbh into the RUU folder (Image)
4. Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe and follow the steps
That's it. Be sure to be ActiveSynced all the time!
Oh and for the ROM request: I can strongly suggest OpenTouch V7.7 Manilla2D - a pretty nice ROM imho.
If there are any questions left don't hesitate to ask
Cheers
i'll recommend the easier flash method, as long as you have a microSD card. you can download any rom image your wish to flash, and place it in the root directory of the sd card as HERAIMG.nbh (i beilieve. look it up, i haven't flashed in a while). just hold the camera button down as you turn on the device, and it'll load into bootloader mode. from there, just follow the instructions.
while opentouch and many other roms that already have many programs are nice, i always recommend the exact opposite. the best and fastest rom i have ever used is just2clean. it has tons of free memory left, and just the basics pre-installed. makes a great base to install just what you want, and easily be able to remove what you don't.
Awesome. Thank you both for the info! I think im gonna go with OpenTouch V7.7 Manilla2D. Ive seen youtube vids on it and it looks appealing.... Thanks again... Going to update as soon as i get off work =P. Will post if i have any problems. But maybe ill ask a last question, will OpenTouch V7.7 Manilla2D leave me much space left over after the flash?
Around 30MB afaik. If you need more space for apps etc. try the JustMe ROM with up to 70MB of free storage.
Cheers
Ok so i couldnt actually find the download link to 7.7, like i click on the 7.7 link in his sig, but couldnt actually fond the download. but i read clear thru the forum and found V7.3..... Successful install...Now I think im gonna try his windows vista beta. Thanks for the help!

Hey guys and gals. I'm new here but I did have a few questions.
Right now my G1 is giving me problems. Here is the scenario. I have loaded into my phone the OpenHome with the Aero theme, BetterCut, Font-Games font pack, and the Icon pack for Aero. Once I set OpenHome to only use 3 screens, I get a force close error. Then, if I were to shut off the phone and then restart it, it hangs on the Android screen (the new one since I already have the cupcake loaded into my phone).
Has anyone had this problem? Any work arounds to fix it?
I was also thinking of rooting my phone to see if that would fix my problems.
Which ROM would you recomend for me to use? and what are the pros and cons for each. Not looking to the Rosie or Sense UI rom yet, but the basic Cupcake rom.
Thanks
This post is in the wrong section as this is for development only.
If you do root your mobile, I would currently suggest Cyanogen's ROM as its up to date, stable and has some cutting edge stuff inside. The theme is also sleek and lightweight without any real modifications to make it look like Hero etc.
XDA timeout - double post.
Thanks for you help.
And my bad about the double post. I'll be chillin in the penalty box if anybody needs me.
Don't worry about it, the double post was by me as XDA struggles with the amount of users hitting the forum ^_^ There's a new Q&A section for the Dream so you can post questions and that which are not related to the development of Android. Unless its a specific ROM issue usually the posts go there.
Hope the rooting and the use of the ROM of your choice goes well!
One last question.
Where can I find specific directions on how to root my phone for the very first time?
I've located a few things but keep getting errors when I try to install the ROM?
Thanks for all your help

Indeed, its a decent thread of which I hope still gets updated. I've also had it in my signature too, to help raise the awareness of such an FAQ.
I'm looking around and not seeing anything concerning Non-rooted phones already running cupcake (Build CRB43).
Will I have to downgrade to RC29 in order to begin rooting my phone?
And is that possible even though I'm running the latest version of Android (ver1.5)?
Good question! I didn't see that you had 1.5 OTA running as it wasn't stated in your original post so we assumed you were running on 1.1. I just quickly read that you wanted a basic cupcake ROM...
You would have to downgrade yeah if you want to obtain ROOT and thus enabling you to flash custom ROMs and other goodies.
Yes, you have to downgrade to RC29 and it can be done with the latest version of the phone software. Follow the directions they already posted. It's reasonably straightforward. There's even a video guide on youtube so you can see what the various screens look like.
Hi All
I have a Tmob G1, firmware 1.5, baseband 62.505.20.17U_2_22.19.26I, kernal2.6.27-00392-g931baf [email protected] #1, build number crb43. I have a 1GB sd card.
I am looking to maybe run the a Hero/Touch/sense?.android 2 on it, but am REALLY confused about what is what.
Honestly - I have tried looking at the forums, googling, etc, but there is so much stuff out there that I cannot see the wood for the trees.
Can any one either let me know what I have to do to run the latest stuff, or at least point me to a link where I can get that information?
Thanks in advance...
Well there are lot's of good rom's out there, it might seem overwhelming at first but the dream android development section would be the best place to start, it is recommended you have atleast a class 6 SD card otherwise the hero rom's will be running very slowly, you could always try out cyanogen, it isn't hero but I love it. I recommend you do a lot of reading before you start out, as you could brick your device, if you didn't know this already. Just read, and read some more when you find a rom that fit's what you want and like what you see make sure you follow the guide to the T. Most of the threads in the android development section are rom's and have screenshot's on the first page. Oh and if you have any other question's just ask me, even though I am new to this site I am not new to G1, and the modified rom's.
Thanks Plasma!
Hello, I just bought a used G1 off ebay, it's not rooted. (This phone is a temporary transition for me. My HTC Hero (GSM/ less than 6 months old) was just repaired by HTC America and now needs to go back for same problem. So I want to jumpstart my mod-process for G1. Normally I read everything from the start. I just cannot take that time now. So, I am hoping I can get some straight forward shortcut answers:
1. I know I can search & find, but i would like best link that gives total, clear instructions How to Root Your G1.
2. Can I get a recommendation on a ROM that has Hero theme and SenseUI, with at least 7 home screens, preferably 9.
3. Best link that describes "How to Install a ROM to G1"
4. What is the current ANdroid OS version running on most G1 Roms?
5. Will my 16gig MicroSD that's been in my Hero work fine just popping into G1?
Thanks and plenty of good karma to an answer that jumpstarts me fast. I need to be up and running in a day.

for sense ? besides king's 2.1 eclair hero no other RECENT hero roms are avail.
i know you can still find some 1.5 hero ports, mightymax 1.9.1 is pretty good.
install new roms, when the g1 came out it was real easy now you need a little prep before flashing roms (even after rooting)
you need to flash a new recovery, danger spl (universally works with every rom)
and a new radio+spl. MAKE SURE YOU FLASH THE RADIO FIRST
you can find real stable 1.6 roms (super D is my fav)
and you have pretty good 2.1 ports (open eclair is A+)
& if your looking for a hero/eclair rom it would be better if your 16gb was a class 6.

Thanks, that was very helpful; i appreciate it. There are times when it is just so unnecessary for one to be an asshole. Not you. Mr Asshole who posted before you. As it turns out, I did in fact search thoroughly yesterday and learned of king's roms, have links to 2 "how to root" guides.
As for the 16gig, I'm pretty sure it's class A. I will check. Yes, I was surprised in reading the guides how much of the rooting and modding process requires use of the SD card. I was busy for 3 years in the HTC Herald forum in Windows Mobile land. So back then Android and G1 were on the periphery of my mind. But that is what I heard from some of the chefs I worked with: that rooting a G1 was way simpler than hard SPL'ing a WM device.
Sounds like the processes are sort of equivalent now. That was helpful to hear just now because when I skimmed the guides last night, I was surprised at all the steps... it didn't match what I had heard a year ago when modding a G1 was new.

Thank you, immensely helpful. My favorite T-Mobile Wing chef "Ivan" moved to Android and G1 about 9 months ago and has never looked back. That's how I feel since getting my Hero. Anyway, thanks much. I was trying not to sound like someone unwilling to do my own research... I do plenty of it. But at this stage of Android maturity and G1 mods, there are already MULTIPLE guides for rooting etc -- which was my original experience with my WM phones... So this is an aberration for me. I had an sudden immediate need and was just seeking some compass bearings.

not downing you... just wanted to say your swap doesn't have to be that high or ext... i usually kept my ext around 256 when i had ext 3 and my swap has never been above 96. its not bad to have that much, but if you have a 4 gig im sure you want all the actual storage space you can have. however, if you have like a 16 gig feel free to have any size you want. just didn't want you to think you HAD to have it tha large.
you could go to Cyanogenmod.com and check the wiki great instructions on how to do pretty much everything you asked for running a hero rom requires making a swap, (most of them anyway) just follow the instructions completely when flashing SPL. Radio first!

Thanks much! So, since I have a 16gig, I have to go back and read what was the rec size for that.
I hope my question helps those of us that are not so sure of ourselves.
I have a AT&T Captivate and have finally learned how to root the device. I had no desire to do this, but I find with the articles I've read that FROYO 2.2 really speeds up the system and helps cure many other aliments. I also am amongst the many who really have waited a long time for AT&T/Samsung to release this for this phone, did I mention waited a loooong time
For 2 days now I have read soooo many articles regarding FROYO 2.2 and all the instructions involved. SpeedMod kernel is one I thought would work, then as I read I wasn't so sure anymore. It's way to difficult and I feel like I'm going to destroy my phone if I look away for a second while following steps 1 -44. (yea I know, not that many steps but it sure looks that way!)
Can anybody recommend a Samsung Galaxy S/AT&T Captivate i897 (ROM? Kernel? What's the difference) that is simple to install, stable and easy to remove if necessary. Vids would be nice, but clear instructions would suffice.
Thanks way in advance, Tomween1
I hope this opens doors to those of us incapable of what many take for granted,

Everything you see on the Captivate dev forum installs the same way. To put it simply for you follow these steps please. You can trust me, I have put out 2 ROMS, support them day and night and would never do anything to harm your device.
1. DL the update.zip attached to this post.
2. move the update.zip to your "Internal" SD card
3. DL the ROM of your choice and also put that on your "Internal" SD card.
4. Reboot into recovery. There are a few ways.
a. Three button recovery(power off device, hold the volume up+down while powering on the device. Once you see the ATT screen, release the power button but continue to hold the volume up+down. Choose install zip from sd card and choose the update.zip. Your phone will now reboot, again, choose install from sd card and choose your ROM. it will now install and reboot your phone. Enjoy your new ROM!
b. Use adb to get into recovery and follow the same steps as above.
Kernels and modems work the same way as mentioned above just go a lot quicker. If you have any other questions please askk so you don't ruin your device, just please post in the Q&A.
These are popping up everyday. I wish you luck in your journey but this belongs in q&a. Development is for developers.

The update.zip is Clock work recovery. You need it to flash a custom ROM. Also, it depends on what you want your ROM to do. I put out Phoenix(very popular) and FireFly(getting more popular) I won't say if mine are any better than the rest as myself and the other devs spend countless hours making these for your enjoyment. Great thing about the Captivate is that it is very easy to just flash another ROM should you not be happy with your current configuration. Any other questions you have please either PM or post in the Q&A.
OK so currently I have Superuser Permissions, ROM Manager and Titanium backup installed, Do you still feel I need Clock work recovery?
Also could you link both of the ROMs you've mentioned. My trust is in those that are willing to help. I would like to start with yours.

I would strongly tecomend buging the Pro version of Titianium Backup. If you have a ton of apps and games like I do, with the Pro version its a 1 click restore process where as the free version you have to install everything individually like you where just getting it from the Market! Gets old fast installing 100+ things that way!

As far as what ROM to choose. It's a matter of personal choices. If you look @ the 1st post (OP) of any of these [ROM] threads it will list the characteristics of each. I understand @ 1st it maylook like garble but if you scroll down you will fins app names and such. Also many of them have posted screen shots of the particular ROM.
I suggest find a cpl that you like and flash them all. I spend a day or two on each one to get a feeling on how my battery life is and any bugs that come up. Most bugs will be listed in the 1st few post of a thread.
So just find what your needs are and your styling and flash away!
You can find the links to the ROM's that I'm currently/recently used in my Sig. Only thing not listed there is the Theme I'm using for Firefly 1.5. Which is Generation X. That can be found on the Phoenix site. You can find a link to that in Adam's sig
Happy Flashing!

I believe that if you have ROM Manager installed then CWM is also.
I don't have ROM Manager on my device @ the moment but I think that it's the 2nd option. Something to the tune of Currently Installed Version.
Also you can scroll down that list and simply Reboot into Recovery mode from that menu. See what comes up for your Recovery Manger
