Widgets = Lag? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How many widgets do you have total on your home screen?
Lately I have been experiencing some lag in my phone and I think it may be caused by having so many widgets on my home screens. I currently have 7 widgets active. THey are the following:
Beautiful Home Widget (Hero Time/Weather)
BT Toggle
WiFi Toggle
Silent Mode Toggle
AutoRotate Toggle
Lock Pattern Toggle
Battery Life Widget
Does having too many widgets cause the phone to lag? In Advanced Task Manager I don't see any extra running processes and it says I have 30MB free, which I am not sure is a lot or not.
See sig for ROM and Apps2SD info.

Yes, the more widgets you have the more it will lag

Hmm okay thanks -- I guess its time to get rid of some.

the number you have running should be effecting your performance.
I have the following widgets running all the time without noticing any perceptible lag:
Call Log
Koxx's Weather
Digital Clock
CNN
FML
Brighness Toggle
BT Toggle
GPS Toggle
Wifi Toggle
SD Memory
Internal Memory
Mute
To benchmark, I started the phone, went to the dialer, called voicemail (a process which takes quite a bit of time as the phone is starting up). The time difference between having all of those widgets active and having none of them active was less than 1/2 a second (0.429 seconds).

Instead of using a widget for bluetooth and wifi, why not use togglewifi and toggleblu from the market (both by Andrew Schwimmer). They look excellent, and the wifi one has some extra features. They have the exact functionality as your widgets, without the burden of being a widget.
This will cut down on the home screen redraw times.

Widgets slow down the phone in two ways. First, by having to be loaded up when you press the home button. They take about 2-3 times as long to draw as an APP icon can take, so that can lag the phone.
But, the most common lag-producing widgets are ones that run in the background because they need to refresh data. Those widgets are great for hogging resources in the background, and sometimes even your toggle widgets can do that too.
Cutting down on widgets always gives you more speed, it's a balance .

I find weather and clock widgets to be battery and resource killers. Tried practically all of them, and without fail I can see a noticeable difference right away. Some really bad, some ok, but still noticeable.
Too bad, some really nice looking weather and clock widgets out there. But they seem to go after the battery on a feeding frenzy.

I've found that any networking widgets especially drain the battery and make it lag. I get extremely upset when my phone lags when I try to use it, so that's no good for me.
Weather widgets require networking, as do the news, Twitter, and FML widgets.
Sticky note widgets don't take up too much resources, and sometimes they can compliment the theme if you can change their colors.
Click widgets also lag it from what I've observed, especially if they are 4x3 like the Hero clock (although it looks so pretty!).
To me, this creates a setback on CyanogenMod firmwares. The one I'm on has 5 home screens and I don't know what to put on them, because I want a pretty layout and no lag. I can't have my (cup)cake and eat it x[

iPhone apps I WISH we had. Irealquicksms and SBsettings

I have both an iphone and a G1. Now people slate the iphone for not being open source, but in terms of productivity it seems the iphone still wins out for me, and it is almost entirely down to two apps which I feel the G1 could REALLY do with: sbsettings and irealquicksms. I am trying to use my g1 everyday as I'm considering selling my iphone and hope someone can point me in the direction of something similar, or the same. Best to look on YouTube for a full understanding of these apps, but in shorts....
Irealsms allows you to send an sms from within ANY application, simply by pressing the volume button followed by a tap on the volume icon that appears, or by doubletapping the homekey. This saves swapping between applications if a text needs to be sent, and also facillitates replying. This is invaluable if you are watching a movie clip and really speeds up the texting process...it is the one application I truly miss from the iphone more than any other.
SBsettings allows you to change almost ANY setting from within ANY application simply by swiping a finger across the status bar on iphone. This means, for example, that if one is watching a film, or browsing the web, one can change the brightness, turn on/off wifi, bluetooth, 3g, gps or any number of other functions by simply swiping the top of the screen, upon which a toggle board slides down the screen. A press of the menu key slides it back up again. I am amazed that this app hasn't been developed for android as it is much more efficient than silly toggle switch widgets which clutter the home screen and are far less practical if one is already inside an application
well Toggle Settings by cooolmagic places the application icon in the status bar for quick access, I find that a good replacement for SBsettings
Toggle Settings is definitely an awesome app and sounds like it would be a good replacement for that Iphone app.
I use ChompSMS and they are constantly improving their app. I'll get onto their website and request they add on a shortcut ability. Say double press on the camera button?
Or, another option is "Bar Control" to add a shortcut for ANYTHING to your notification bar.
Keyboard shortcuts are great, too.
I would suggest looking into sms popup. It makes the text msg pop up and you can just hit the reply button after you respond just hold down the home button and go back to the program you were using last.
Why not use the quick launch keyboard shortcuts for messaging (Search button + S) and Settings (no default)?
You can set shortcuts for up to 36 different apps and the shortcuts will work from any application. Just go to Settings > Application Settings > Quick Launch.
You could also just hold [HOME] and select Messaging/ChompSMS to send texts without having to drop back to the home screen (If it was one of your last 6 apps used anyways...)
Fandango would also be awesome.

Random hijack much? Get your own thread.
Bar control allows you to put any app in the notification bar for easy access within most apps. So you could put your messaging app and a setting app (or any other app you may want) in the bar for easy access. The only exception would be apps that take up the full screen and hide the notification bar. Not many of those though.

Any way to have more fine grained control over animations?

Inside the Sound & display settings menu is section to turned down the animations used throughout the system. I find that turning them all of really makes the phone feel snappy, but it comes at the cost of some of the nice animated transitions between screens and apps. The settings allow three different options: completely off, some animations, or all animations turned on.
What I really want is all of the animations, except for the opening application one. This is the animation that occurs when you launch an application from one of the home screens or the launcher and it looks like the application window grows out from the center of the screen until it fills the entire screen. I think this one looks bad, especially when you have a bright colored background and when it is turned off applications feel like they open much quicker. Selecting 'some animations' from the settings will turn this one off, but it also disables the sliding transition that occurs when traversing through menus and pages in an app, which I actually really like.
So does anyone know of a way to disable animation one at a time?
I normally just set the animations to fast from the 'spare parts' application that is in most roms.

I tried that but it's still not ideal. I guess it can't be done at this point...

[Q] Launcher Pro on Hero

So I am now making Launcher Pro my new Home application. The only issue with this is every so often my icons and widgets on my screen will disappear and re appear. Also maybe like twice a day I get a force close while using the phone. My question to all that use Launcher Pro on the Hero, does any of this happen to you? Also is there a way to fix this?
Rom - NfiniteX45 deoxed.
OC - HoneyBunV3
Did other mods like 270 Degree rotation.
Just putting what I have done on my phone because I do not know if this is the reason why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hit menu > preferences > advanced settings > memory usage settings
there are a lot of settings here to tweak for you problem. first, try the bottom setting "prevent force-closes".
Read these 2 posts to understand what the settings mean:
http://www.launcherpro.com/?p=74
http://www.launcherpro.com/?p=93
Also make sure you save launcher pro as your default home. If you're not sure how, download home switcher from the market.

Thank you both on your advice. I already had prevent force closing on. As for setting it as my default home, I made sure that was the first thing that I did. I will try to tweak the settings to a lower memory usage. After reading the 2 links it seems like it may help on a lower setting. This whole time I thought leaving it at a moderate setting would make it perform better. I will let you know my results after a day or so on my new settings. If you guys don't mind, can you give me your memory settings since we all have the same device? I know each device can vary but just to give myself a heads up on the scenarios.
While we all have the same device, I doubt we share the same number of homescreens, active widgets, large sized widgets, and shortcuts on the homescreen, if we use the scrollable dock, and if we choose a dock background... all of these affect how much memory LauncherPro takes up, and the more memory it takes up the more likely it is to force-closing / having to reload all icons.
I have 3 homescreens and the following widgets: calendar, music control, digi clock, weather channel (small), some dazzle control widgets, some Apps Organizer widgets, and a few shortcuts to apps. About 50-55% of my availalbe home screen area is full.
I also don't have a scrollable dock or dock background, and I don't use scrollable widgets.
Memory usage preset: medium
Checked: Use homescreen caches and Build caches as needed
Homescreen cache type: normal
I'm running a pretty minimal setup with 3 screens and only 4 widgets, with 1 dock, and sometimes I do get the thing with the screen refresh. I don't see force closes but occasionally do have to tell it to wait for launcherpro. Probably only happens a couple times a week though. I'm currently on the latest nightly 2.2 build, and previously on dd 2.8, and saw this on each. The refresh does seem to occur after closing out of memory intensive things, but comes back quick enough that it doesn't bother me.

Thanks for the reply trying all diffrent settings now. I am thinking about making the jump to 2.2 now that I have launcher pro as my home. I was just waiting for it to have everything working before going to 2.2.
Ever since installing 2.2 I don't get any of the issues I was explaining.
I'm on 2.2, have all the memory settings on launcher pro at maximum performance, with 5 home screens, lots of widgets, etc., with autokiller at strict, and I always have 40-50mb of ram free and no slowdowns/force closes. Just so ya can compare.

[Q] Notification Talback/NoLED/launcher/splanner/HelloWorld-Make-II kernel C22 Hell

I've been rolling round the net for a few days now trying to solve this but no fully successful result.
It seems the stock launcher has this bug were if u have anything active in the accessibility services such as NoLED then tallback (TB) kicks in.
I tried the disable TB suggestion for NoLED but it always seems to start again. However I have stooped the voice by uninstalling it + the 2 TTS engines. However a hand is displayed in the notification bar (& it ignores my colour thyme) and an ongoing notification is displayed as well U can get rid of this but it reappears at reboot.
So I've tried the used a different launcher idea for NoLED, I think this worked (lots of launchers & playing going on) TB voice wise but I still get the hand
Also the splanner 'full screen' widget does not seem to work with other launchers I've had a look at a few other calendar widgets but they are not as good as they did not display any text only a marker for events unlike the splanner widget.
But even if I could find a good 'full screen' calendar widget I would still have the TB hand problem so I might as well stick with the stock launcher as I have figured out how to shut it up - But I don't want the hand!
I was thinking of trying [KERNEL][TW]Forest-HelloWorld-Make-II kernel for JB N7000 as v1.73 has BLN support but this is an old version and the new version does not support it. Also it looks like v1.73 does not have phils touchwiz recovery; which I currently have and don't wish to loose. Also the BLN in 1.73 is based on wakelock, so would this mean bad battery life?
I cannot ask about the kernel in it's thread yet, so can anybody comment.
Last night I found the LEDBlinker Lite app & that looked interesting but the way in which it works (which I have not looked at yet) means the back & menu buttons are permanently illuminated (this will be because I have them set to be on when the screen is on as I have 360 degree rotation enabled) and the activation icon for button savior is displayed. So this is no go due to battery consumption and screen burn.
Can anybody suggest a way out of this catch 22 hell, so I have some sort of message notification with the screen 'off', with no TB voice, no TB hand in notification, 'full screen' splanner widget or similar which displays text for events, does not cause the prob with button savior and the back/menu keys and has philz touch?
If a new launcher is needed it needs to support folders in the apps draw and ideally be free. I'm def not paying anything till I get it all working due to the catch 22 nature of this.
Any suggestions muchly appreciated as I've been messing around with this for days.
I'm using sweet rom v11.1 with a philz touch v5.
Thanks

Lock screen resolution problems!

I have a weird problem with my Note 8 (running pie)... the screen resolution for my lockscreen seems bugged. The app shortcuts (2 apps at the bottom of the screen) are cropped and the clock seems larger than usual. I am inclined to think that the resolution is stuck in a weird setting. The AOD is affected as well, clock looks bloated and I can't even see the home button.
Tried playing with the display resolution. I'm currently on 1080p... 1440p still has cropped app shortcuts... 720p makes the apps completely disappear!
I've installed a couple of apps that would make the navigation bar disappear (which is my suspect for this weird resolution). Nova Launcher, Fluid Nav Gesture and your very own navigation gestures. Did the whole ADB step to completely remove the nav bar.
Only app that would change the lockscreen is Lock Star from Samsung's Good Lock but I uninstalled it and cleared the partition which did absolutely nothing.
Been googling all day for a solution and sadly didn't find any... hopefully you guys can help me because it is so irritating. Not to mention I lose the home button functionality in my AOD.
Sadly since I am a new member I can't post images.
Have you tried changing dpi in developers section in settings, that might help
