I'm looking for a software that will work in conjunction with my gps to show live traffic status. I'm currently using Garmin XT and I'm wondering if the app automatically routes the path based on traffic information that it downloads or does it just goes by the original criteria.
I live in the SoCal area and my problem is trying to avoid the horror of the traffic that is I-5. Any reccomendations for a good software that will just show traffic conditions based on your gps location? (kinda like the one that blackberry has) thanks!

try this. it's still in beta development, but he's gotten it pretty functional recently.

Garmin Mobile XT should route around traffic if you've configured it to do so (look through the settings, I think it's called "avoidance setup" - you have to have Garmin Online access enabled). Of course, it relies on the accuracy of the traffic data and the availability of an alternate route that it calculates as being faster.
I've had it route me around traffic in NYC before, and I can't say I'm convinced it did the right thing. Of course it's hard to know how you'd have fared if you stayed in traffic...

I am just wondering if there is a free GPS application that has roads on it (like the tomtom) that doesn't use the internet.

I counted, you posted this brand new thread exactly 5 threads above a thread titled " best free GPS " are you serious ?
Please read here

And you can stop here too as if you search a bit you'll see this doesn't exist (yet?).

Greedy Huh? Either Pay to Get Roads Via a data Plan. Or Pay for Maps for TomTom. Why would someone take the time to compile very complex maps to work with GPS software and Give it away for free?
I'm sorry to say, but Capitalism Rules!

Checkout Terracrosser - Free (till now at least), requires no data plan, you need a PC with internet connection though to download maps either from Google Or Yahoo available free, Terracrosser comes with an application (on the PC) to package the Google/Yahoo maps that can be transfered to your Kaiser, NO voice prompts, no route planning, no other bells and whistles - basic tracking of position using the GPS on free road maps but what more you can expect for free.
I downloaded tomtom 7 to give it a try and it completely surpassed all expectations I had for it. Sure, the graphics may not be stunning but all of the recent roadwork around my city was on there and I was very impressed with how many poi's I had access too. I purchased the maps this morning and I recommend you do the same, you won't regret it.
Free GPS Software
Guys, Try http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php. Works pretty OK if you do not want to pay for a service like ATT Navigator for instance. Remember it will still require a data plan so not completely "FREE"
i have seen a lot of gps application can do things like record tracking, dislay compass, coordination detail..etc.
but i also looking for gps tool which can tell me how long i have walked/drove? and also how far am i from my destination if i have set the coordination for the destination. i think this function can be archieved without using map. i saw that every nokia s60v3 smartphone with gps has this little gps utility. just wondering is there any similar software in android..thx
This might be of use:
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.google.android.maps.mytracks
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/happy-trails-with-my-tracks-for-android.html
You can use BuddyRunner for walking/jogging times etc, I coded a driving app "Speed Proof", although it doesn't record driving times I'll add it to the todo list for the next release.
As for the nokia handset utils, nokia has a big database of mapping information, so they could easily do lots of mapping stuff on their server and spit out basic info on the phones.
like jashu said, check out MyTracks. Its similar to SportsTracker for s60, but not as "jocky". My tracks is nice because if you share teh maps, its via google maps, not some nokia service that everyone has to sign up for.

MyTracks seems like does not work without network connection. i prefer the application to use the built-in gps module only for positioning.
BuddyRunner seems like satisfying my needs..thx..
My Tracks can still work without network coverage, you just won't be able to get map tiles from Google. For any GPS app, without network coverage you won't have Assisted GPS, meaning your position fix will take longer and be less accurate.

AndNav2 allows you to pre-cache map tiles, I'm hoping they make some library similar to the radar library available to other devs so other applications can make use of their hard work too.

Not having AGPS may take longer to get fix, and in some case it may slightly increase accuracy, but the GPS chips in the G1 will still give you accurate location data without any network connection.
Also AGPS was only added in Android 1.5 so if you are using 1.0/1.1 you won't have AGPS anyway.
gps measure does what you describe
You can try Sportypal,

AndNav is available for free from the Market or from andnav.org.
You can choose from several different map providers and get spoken directions if you install the Text-to-Speech libraries. Navigation is processed remotely by the University of Bonn so you do need 3G coverage to use it effectively.
I've used it once or twice and it's quite good; however as it's free it doesn't include UK postcodes that aren't in the FreeThePostcode open database
Destinator will be available soon : http://android.smartphonefrance.info/actu.asp?ID=190

I've tested andNav2 as well. You CAN add offline maps, they're available for download here:
http://www.andnav.org/index.php/downloads/maptile-packs/
A how to install is included in the rar file
Oh yes, there's TeleNav as well, but that app is paid. $99 a year.
Destinator 9 is available according to a press release http://www.intrinsyc.com/about_us/press_releases/2009/06_03_2009.aspx, but i can seem to find a way to download it. Anyone got any ideas?
This is great news having a good GPS app available
can andnav be used only in the uk or worldwide?
There is a list of covered countries on the AndNav Website. There are a lot of countries on it...

Judging from their website, this destinator appears to be a proper OFFLINE nav system, if so, that means that we *finally* have a *real* nav system available. This is awesome.
Are andnav maps accurated? i have been surfing though some openstreet maps and they have only main streets marked... at least in my town in Spain (400,000 inhbt)
I think this is the main android's handicap, not having a real gps door to door solution like tomtom or navigon
I'm looking at the Magic/Sapphire for my wife and the only sticking point has been turn-based navigation. If Destinator 9 is truly an offline navigator then that's made the decision so much easier.

Andnav doesn't support where I'm from (Hong Kong)... therefore I will settle with offline maps.
If you are interested, Andnav can take maps created from TrekBuddy Atlas Creator - which is available for download from Andnav's website, and from this app you can select maps from many sources e.g. openstreet, google map, etc.. and create an offline map.
Offline maps is NOT "settling". It is the BEST thing. Online maps are terrible because 1a) they use data (which is expensive), 1b) require a data plan, 2) are dependent on network availability/infrastructure/other people's equipment.
#2 creates a huge SAFETY problem. Say you're out in the middle of nowhere or there has been some kind of disaster and there is no cell coverage or data network availability. You are on your way to somewhere and you are low on fuel, and maybe there is a dying person or a woman in labor in your back seat. Now your path is blocked -- fallen tree or washed out road lets say. At this point, you can't navigate because there is no data and you don't know your way around the problem. What do you do? You hope that you have a paper map (unlikely), you press the "reroute" button on your OFFLINE navigator, or you let the person in the back seat die or give birth or whatever.
ROFL, best argument for a feature I have read in a long time!
/sarcasm
Yeah, I wonder how we've been able to survive as a race for this long without GPSes
/sarcasm off
But put back in today's society (read assisted people) it's a pretty good point.
Dose anybody know when Destinator 9 is actually being released. After searching all I found was the same information:
"Destinator has been announced for Android and should be released in June"
or something like that. I couldn't find anymore information.
Hey guys, i just stumpled upon Copilot Live! when browsing through the marketplace earlier today, seems to be released today!

Trying to decide whether to move from my Fuze to an Aria and there are some loose ends I want to tie up.
Is there a way to put cities not found on the Weather app on it?
Thanks, in advance.

There doesn't appear to be; at least not without some form of configuration file hacking (and even then, I'm only guessing it's possible).
When you setup the phone, it figures out where you are, based either on GPS or WiFi. The GPS option is more exact (and I'm guessing the location moves as you move), but it also consumes more battery.
The WiFi option determines where you are, based on the location/ISP of the most recent WiFi network that you accessed. When I set it up for the first time this morning at my home in South Berwick, ME, it came up with Rollinsford, NH (a bordering town) as my location.
So you essential get one "custom" weather city that's tied to your location, and a number of preset weather cities that you can choose from to flesh out the Weather app.
The locator is "exact enough" for my tastes. YMMV.

The most advanced GPS calculations app is getting even more advanced.
You may know 'GPS Calculator' from this forum or reviews on wpcentral, wpxbox, addictive tips and other web sites.
http://www.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-app-review-gps-calculator
http://www.wpxbox.com/gps-calculator-wp-distance-area/
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...istance-area-coordinates-of-any-location-wp7/
GPS Calculator is an advanced app that does for free what other apps don't do for money. Now in addition to existing features of calculating areas, distances and projections 'GPS Calculator' will have an altimeter function (using 5 different elevation data models), elevation profile graphs, time zone in any given world location and some astronomical calculation (sunrise, sunset and length of day).
You can make it better by beta-testing.
If you have an unlocked phone just used attached xap file and let me know how it works for you. If your phone is locked - send me your live id (the one you are using on your phone) and I will add you to the private beta.
When using My Location I get GPS Altitude as "Vertical accuracy NaN Km" but when i choose something from Map, the GPS Altitude field is empty.
In both case I get to see the result.
Also when using USGS it says " Unable to get data from the elevation web service. Error : USGS Dataset has no elevation data recorded for the given location"
But thats happening for my location which is India. I guess its only for US.

Thanks a lot for testing it out. I will fix NaN km issue. This is because that GPS elevation is not always available. And it is not available from maps functions, because map is not really using GPS. In this case you can only see corrected elevation. And yes USGS only maintains data for US territory, I will add a note explaining that.
Probably you can check if any location is selected outside US, Just disable it

Might be a good idea, though if in future they add support for more region data - will not work I'll think about it!
