ubuntu is smarter than me - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i just got a new g1 and when i click on the device in ubuntu i put a checkmark by the device in the usb list but it immediately just disappears, am i missing something?
I dont remember doing anything special to get it to recognize my last g1, although towards the end of that g1's life id have to frequently restart ubuntu because id encounter the same problem...very, very, very frustrating, thanks

Hmm, I do sometimes have problems mounting the G1 is ubuntu, but its normally fixed be logging out and in or remount in the phone and mounting in ubuntu again. When this happens I see "Usb Device" in the computer are of nautilus, but that refuses to mount.

ok well then i suppose there arent any setting im supposed to configure when attempting to mount a new device, although it mounted the other g1 so i dont know if this would even count as a new device.
But at least i know its not the settings i need to be looking at...
its just so damn irritating that i plug in the device, it appears on the list of devices in the ubuntu usb icon, then i check the htc...box and i get the connecting sound immediately followed by the disconnecting sound...argh

Could explain what you mean by "check the box"? I just go to computer and mount it from there or places from the gnome panel and click to mount. You are using Nautilus right? Also it never says anything about HTC for me, just the label I gave to the fat32 volume :-S

Get ready to laugh, i dont know what nautilus is, care to elaborate?. I start up ubuntu, and on the bottom right there is a usb icon, and when i plug in a usb device it shows up there, so i click on the respective device, in this case the phone which shows up as 'htc device...' and then i mount from phone. if i just click (check) the device w/o mounting i can use terminal and what not but once i mount it i can see and change all of the partitions with gparted.

nautilous is the name for the explorer in ubuntu like Windows Explorer in Windows. I still dont get what you are trying to say. Are you saying you can mount it but it disapears or does it mount and you cant change or remove anything?

File Transfer Problem?...

Hey everyone, kinda new to htc phones...or rather, smart phones in general, and this diamond touch is my first, just got it...
Anyways, im not a total "noob" or anything when it comes to phones, but i can't figure out if im just stupid and don't know how to transfer files onto my phone via usb, or if there is an Actual problem....
I have my "USB To PC" Settings set on the "Disk Drive" setting, and when i plug my usb in my phone > PC i dont get any messages saying anything like the usual "Mass storage device found" etc. etc. on my computer, all that happens is a little PDA looking icon pops up in "My Computer" and when i go into it there is nothing there, Nor can i create anything in it.....
So needless to say im at a lost...i know i could just transfer music/videos and stuff via bluetooth, but that would take a VERY long time.....
Anyone have any suggestions?...
More Info:
- Yes i installed the disc it came with
- Running Windows XP Pro
- Tried soft re-setting
EDIT: Ok i take that back, that PDA looking icon is there 24/7 i thought it just popped up when i plugged the phone into my usb drive, but i guess it's always been there since i installed that disc.....so, literally nothing happens when i plug it into my computer :S...
Any help at all?...
for real...

when you plug in usb and choose 'disc drive' on your device, you should go to 'my computer' and your pc/desktop and select g-drive, or e-drive, or one of em, open it, and you will see the folders/contents of your device 'internal storage'/storage card.
this thread is old, so I'm guessing you've already got it figured by now.

NEED HELP!! - Serious Problem With Windows 7

Ok heres my story!!
Ive been using windows 7 since it came out with no problems what so ever, recently ive had some problems with infections, even tho my av suite says there all gone, im a bit paranoid with security (Credit card info and such) so i thought id format my hdd and reinstall win 7. This is where the problems start.
ever since reinstalling win 7, ive had 2 big problems.
1) my dvd drive wont work, if i put a cd in, no responce, if i take the cd out no responce, if i boot up my pc with a cd in, somtimes it will acknowledge that a cd is in but if i try to run it, windows explorer just crashes, if i take the cd out and reboot my computer it still thinks its in, if i try to look at my dvd drive properties in device manager, device manager crashes
2) windows 7 will not shut down, i have waited nearly 20 minutes and it just keep saying shutting down.
so i thought that my pc may still be infected so i thought id install vista on another partition see what happens, so i popped in my vista cd formatted my hdd, partitioned it in vista setup and installed in on the first partition, after id installed it vista works fine, the dvd drive recognises cd's, it refreshes when i take a dvd out and everything.....
so i though it mite be my copy of win 7 being scratched or sumat and not installing proply, so i borrowed my mates copy of windows 7 and installed that on the other partition ....... exactly the same problems as with mine
i dont understand why this is happening, windows 7 worked perfectly before , ive been using it since the first pre-beta version and never had this problem.
can anyone explane this? do you know how to solve it? cuz i really dont want to have to go back to using vista
and help would be really apreciated
this may be a hardware problem not software
it most certainly sounds like your cd drive is dead. so i start by replacing that
also i recommend you test your hard drive and your ram. there are free tools to do this
the long shutting down time could indicate that the hard drive is on it way out
but also you didnt post specs so i have no idea how old or what type of machine you have

If that was the case why is all my hardware working fine under vista? dvd/hdd all work perfectly and it shuts down within seconds
i have an acer aspire 5738G running an intel core 2 duo cpu and 4gb ram
Few questions;
Q) Was your "working" install of Windows 7 an upgrade over top of Vista or was it a clean install as well?
Q) Have you checked the Acer website and the websites for the other components in your system to ensure that you have the latest firmware and drivers?
Q) Have a look at the Device Manager to ensure that all devices are properly installed (no Exclamation/Question Marks). If there are such entries, uninstall them and restart the system. Use the steps below to check Hidden/Non-Present entries.
Removing Hidden and Non-Present Devices in Device Manager:
Click Start. Type cmd and right click on it and select "run as administrator".
In the command prompt type "set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
Type "set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1" (without quotation marks) and Press Enter.
Type "start devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) and click press Enter.
Click View.
Click Show hidden devices.
Expand each Device node to look for Exclamation/Question Mark entries.

Your hdd i dont think is on its way out, beacause my pc has win 7 and has once or twice hung on shuting down.
Do any discs work in your drive with vista?
flyboy
If the disk drive works outside of 7, it could be a driver issue. Windows 7 also updates drivers for you, which could explain why it stopped working. If you open device manager (type it into the bar), open the properties for the disk drive, and under the "driver" tab, select "Roll back driver" if its an option.
If the startup time ok, or just excessive shutdown?

thanks i will try that and no its just shutdown, i think its cuz like i said about windows explorer crashing, its trying to shut it down proply but it cant thats why it takes foreva to shutdown
*EDIT*
Ok when i try to look at the dvd-RW in device manager, device manager just crashes 2 lol its been like 5 minutes now and it still says not responding, im gunna leave it for another 10 mins see what happens i mite just forget windows 7 and go back to vista ...... atleast i get my dreamscene back then lol
If device manager does not work normally, just start windows 7 in safe mode and then start device manager to see what is wrong. Uninstall the driver and then let Win 7 find another driver next time you restart system. That should be enough.
if you can remove the cd drive boot and see if that is the issue, if so then you may need a new cd drive.
its worth it for 7 honestly!

see my faq for how to connect; best option if on mac or windows or mac, buy program "dual mount sd", or use free program "automount" (not actual name, search for that) and you can get your sd card to be read from the phone using usb mass storage, and double twist will recognize it. I prefer dual mount sd, worth the $1.

Are you still using a Vogue? Because I tried dual mount sd 1.6 and the latest auto mount free and they both don't work. Running Myn's Donut with Windows 7.

No, I thought it never worked before... I got version 1.6 from the interwebs, put the widget on a screen, clicked it, and waited. For the longest time my computer > device manager showed an android device but could not install any driver, so I waited and then it showed up as the G: drive after about 5 minutes.
I don't know if this matters: on the app's page (Dual Mount SD) in the market it says root access required. I think I went into better terminal editor, and typed "su drkow19" and clicked enter, just because that's what I type on my linux box sometimes, drkow19 being just a random name. Yeah I'm pretty sure that didn't matter, but hey try anything.

N1 - Scan Fix Removable Disk message?

Whenever I mount my N1 now (windows 7) I am getting that darstardly
"Would you like to Scan & Fix Removable drive f:?"
-Scan and Fix recommended.
-Continue without scanning.
Really starts so become painful after a while.
Can someone suggest a way to remove this message, apart from the obvious scan, which does not work.
Tried:
-Scan and Fix which does not work because Win7 reports the N1 as RAW format.
- Disabling Autoplay (no change)
- emptying recycle bin on PC with N1 mounted
- running Chkdsk :f /f from a admin window which fails too.
Mounting it to other PCs does not result in the message, implying nothing is genuinely wrong with the drive. I just need to convince my regular PC that this is the case. So far I cannot get the message across to it!!
Its a Windows7 thing, this happens with most Flash drives or storage devices of any kind. Its nothing wrong or anything needing attention. But the only thing that can be done is to disable autoruning. Other than that it doesn't really mean anything.

That, or turn off the phone, take out the SD card, put it in reader and scan.
Windows warns about possible FS inconsistency, and it might be real. Was real in my case (lost clusters).

yea and most likely it would scan faster if you put SD in reader because I remember people saying before that using the usb through the phone restricts the speed (unless that was only write speed)
OK will chase up a card reader. Thanks for the suggestions.

hmm, turns out my SD adapter as gone awol. Is the boot into recover mode something I can do without unlocking boot loader etc? My N1 is still bog standard and for now I do not want to mess with that side of it. Can I get recovery more and mount the USB simply by booting with a button combo? If so how? Thnx.

[Q] MTP not working after installing CM 10.1.3 (i9305)

After going through a ton of hoops to get this thing rooted, then ****ing flashed, I (naturally) run into another infuriating issue that is USB drivers don't seem to work, I hear the USB connected sound on windows when I plug it in but nothing appears, connecting as a Camera (PTP) seems to "work" but I can only see some(?) of my files and nothing can be copied to the phone. I have no SD Card, only the internal memory, so mass storage is not an option either. It shows up in Device Manager as "Google Galaxy Nexus ADB Interface" under "Android Device"
Things I've tried:
-Rebooting the PC(Many times)
-Rebooting the phone(Many times)
-Powering off the phone, taking out the battery and leaving it for 5 mins then powering on again
-Reinstalling Samsung Kies and Samsung USB drivers(infinite times)
-Factory resetting the phone and skipping all account prompts at startup then connecting the phone(seems to work for some people)
-Connecting with USB debugging off
-Connecting with USB debugging on
-Changing the USB Port.
Please help, I'm just about sick of this phone and it's countless issues, can't believe how hard it is to customize.
So here's a development. I tried turning USB debugging on and it installed some drivers then restarted my PC, now MTP mode works but only when USB Debugging is on, so at least that's good.
Still if anyone knows a way to fix this(ability to connect via USB with debugging off) that would be great. I don't imagine it's safe to have debugging on all the time.
Edit: also I got an idea, if there is a way to run the Phoneutil thing on CM10 that would be wonderful, I probably need to change the qualcomm USB settings from there or set those options in the main menu to PDA/PDA. The *#7284# code doesn't work without touchwiz.
I believe this is what you need.

Would you mind explaining that permissions bit though? I don't quite understand it. I've found the folder and can't delete it because of the permissions but I can't understand his explanation of getting the permissions... lol.
EDIT: I can't find "upperfilter" either.
I had to change permissions on that object to do so, then inside permissions take ownership and tick child keys and subkeys
Uncheck inherit from parent
If it pops up a dialog pops up choose add from the options
You will have to do this for several tabs in this permissions of the registry.

Well, windows sucks on that department. The process is a bit buggy and shows you WAY too many warning and unnecessary windows. So this is what you need to do. After locating said registry key, i'd advise you to export it (it's a backup).
Then try to delete it's contents. You've noticed you can't, it says permission denied. So you right click on the denied folder and chose permissions.
You'll notice it's all blank. Press Advanced on the bottom and you'll notice on the next windows, up there where it says Proprietary, it says you're not the proprietary. But there's a placeholder link that does allow you to change who is. Click it and type in (search if you need) your current windows username (assuming your username is an admin on that machine). Accept everything util you reach the first window you got when you chose "permissions". Instead of pressing "Advanced" you pick "Add" and add your username again, give yourself "Total control" on the tick boxes below and press OK. You'll be back at the registry keys. The process to pick up the new permissions is a bit buggy. You'll need to refresh them now and you won't be denied access to the contents of the key you've just altered but you'll find out another key where you need to repeat the whole deal again. Think this'll happen 3 or 4 times. When all's done you will have no trouble deleting everything.
Now, this is the part i managed to do. My control panel part, is no where like what was stated in the OP (maybe because i'm using win8.1). I'm still figuring that one out. Removing the reg key, seems to have had no effect whatsoever in connecting my device to the computer, everything still works albeit through MTP.
Oh yea, i never had an issue with MTP not working. I just want to remove it because it's a limitative uneeded piece of crap. Slow transfer speeds and blocked access to my stuff during an operation (copying stuff) is just retarded.

Thanks. I just found a huge timesaver called run as system that opens any exe as the SYSTEM profile, so you have sufficient permissions to delete whatever you want.
I removed the whole folder and the issue persisted, then I don't know what I did and USB stopped working completely, with and without Debugging. Gahhhh...
I'm recovering the original firmware now and starting from scratch on this.
Will post any updates/progress.
I DID IT. 6 hours of pain, I finally fixed it. Guess what the big thing is? Outdated ****ing drivers... god.
The drivers in this thread are outdated and do not work for androids past 4.1:
[WARNING! + GUIDE] Backup and Restore IMEI / NV Data Procedure for GT-I9305
Do NOT use the USB drivers from this thread.
For anyone having this problem:
Uninstall Samsung Kies, at the end you'll be asked if you want to remove usb drivers as well, accept.
Uninstall USB drivers from to make sure they are completely gone
Reboot your computer
Reboot your phone (doesn't make sense, just do it)
Reinstall Samsung Kies
Install up-to-date version of the drivers, look up version 1.5.29.0, filename SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1.5.29.0.exe (Not posting the link because I'm not sure it's clean, don't want to infect anyone)
Plug your phone in
Ta da! You can now transfer files from your computer to your phone and vice versa using the DREADED, ABYSMAL ****ING Media Transfer Protocol
If this does not work, redo the first 2 steps, plug your phone in while you have Device Manager opened (Right click on my computer then choose Manage) and look for any devices showing up after you plug it in and uninstall the **** out of them, removing their drivers as well, make sure you do this with both MTP and CTP(Camera mode).
After that proceed from step 3 and you should be good.
