If I may make a suggestion download an FTP server such as WinFTP and an FTP client I like Droidftp more than andftp...
Make sure to forward the port on the router and set up your users directories... You don't need to forward the port, unless you want to connect to the computer from a 3g network... also VNC servers are cool... (Remote desktop)

there is the samba client which works sometimes

try an app called "afile." it does exactly this. you connect your g1 to the wifi network. then u can transfer stuff back and forth to pc. just like if you had a wireless laptop and u transfer files throiugh the wlan.

Comm Manager Internet Sharing instead of Wireless Modem?

I have an AT&T Tilt running its original ROM. Is there a way to change the Comm Manager to have a shortcut to Internet Sharing instead of Wireless Modem? I replaced the Comm Manager with a nice touch style one, but it still shows Wireless Modem, so I assume there is somewhere in the registry which tells Windows which one to use by default for this type of task. Does anyone know how to change it?
Bump...It's been awhile since this question was asked and I'm looking for the same thing. Anyone have any ideas yet?
Has anyone found a way?
where is Internet Sharing?
I'd like to give ICS a try instead of using wireless modem.
I have the original ROM. Where should I find Internet Connection Sharing?
I've looked in Start > Programs, and it's not there. If it is not on my phone, can I add it?
Thanks, Bren

If its not there, its hidden in your My Device/Windows directory. Its there, you just gotta look. On mine its called Internet Sharing. You can then create a shortcut to it and place it in your programs or start menu.

download both AdvancedConfig_v1.1.CAB and AdvancedConfig_v1.0.CAB from http://xda.scan4.us/index.php?sort=date&order=desc&path=Cabs/ and change it from there
Internet Connection Sharing
Thanks for your responses to my post. I did find the app in my Windows folder. It's called IntShrUI.exe. I pasted a shortcut of it into my Start Menu > Programs folder. I haven't been able to figure out how to configure my PC to make it work.
I've been researching in the forums how to configure a PC to use the internet connection of my phone. My PC doesn't have Bluetooth, so I would like to use the USB connection. Most of the postings are how to configure for Bluetooth.
If you know where to find a good explanation, please post the link for me. I'm running Windows XP Pro. I want to use the phone as a back up connection if my cable connection goes down.
I have been successful using my phone with AT&T connection manager on my computer, but I have a problem with that. I have Virtual PC installed on my computer, and the network configuration of Virtual PC doesn't recognize the AT&T Connection Manager as a network card, so my VPC doesn't have access to the internet through my phone.
I'm hoping that with Internet Connection Sharing, the network adapter on my PC will still be used, and access the Internet through the gateway on my phone.
Thanks, Bren

There are 2 ways to get it working over USB. Either get the USB modem drivers working, (Which I have never been able to do) or use windows dial up networking. I have connected my Tilt to the AT&T 3G data network with the Windows xp Professional DUN interface. When I get home I'll copy my DUN settings and post them here. Its the same settings I used to use to teather my Motorola V551 for data. I accidentally clicked on DUN a few weeks ago while the Tilt was connected and it worked with the same settings.
Of course, I do have a USB Bluetooth dongle, and getting ICS working is easiest with BT. All you have to do for that is set up a pairing between the 2 devices, and create a BT Personal Area Network.

I got it working
Thanks, Jay.
I pieced together information I found about ICS, and I got it working. It works with my Virtual PC because Windows XP puts a Network Connection in the Network Connections folder that I can use to create a Virtual Network in the VPC configurations.
When my phone is connected to my computer via USB, and I open Internet Connection Sharing app on the phone, and then connect to the phone's data network, the Network Connection is automatically created in XP.
I'm not sure what was missing, but when I tried this earlier on my laptop, it didn't successfully automatically install the Generic RDNIS driver that my desktop did successfully install. I'm going to try it again on my laptop. On my laptop, I do have bluetooth, and I will try to get that working instead of USB.
I'm wondering, is there any advantage to using AT&Ts Communication Manager instead of Internet Connection Sharing?
Thanks again for your response.

I would think that the advantage is that they then know for a fact you are teathering, and can be exxxxtra sure you are being "properly billed" on an "appropriate" data plan that probably costs at least $60/mo

Ok, I found the Cingular / AT&T DUN settings on my computer.
Username: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1 (This is case sensitive!!!)
Number to Dial: *99***3#
I also always max out the port speed in the modem configuration so the port doesn't restrict a nice fast HSDPA connection.
This will work for Bluetooth or USB modem connections.

activesyn & share internet over wifi?adhoc with 2 computers

i ve managed to make an adhoc network over wifi ,and my laptop and kaiser could see each other. i couldnt find an option on how to share the gprs connection from the kaiser to the laptop though.
also, can i sync over wifi as well?
bluetooth and infrared are not available on my laptop.
i can share net fine over usb, i am doing this atm, but because i had to drive back to pick my cable, i will like to know how to do that over wifi.
thanks in advance.
Internet Connection Sharing app in your programs folder is the way to share it.
But you need to tweak it or download wmwifirouter to use WIFI.
Similarly you need to do some tweaking to sync over wifi.

You got it unwired4.
I am looking into putting a generic internet connection on the Internet sharing selection pulldown. The new Sharing facility uses the new WM6 calls but I am sure you can hook this proto to the base TCPIP connection you have running at the time.
Will keep you informed.

At Work- Access network via ActiveSync/USB?

I read somewhere that when hooked up to the PC and activesynch, that WIFI doens't work (which seems to be the case for me) and you can/will access the internet via that method. The trick is you need to have the proxy server that your office uses entered.
I have ooked to my PC at work, and have the Proxy address in, but I still cannot get to the internet.
The one thing that I also seem to remember (can't find that post now) is that somethign about Active synch. I just tried, on the PC, to select "This computer connected to The Internet". It had been auto. didn't help.
Am I trying to do somethign that I can't? If not, any ideas you can share on what I need to set up?
You can allow your phone to use WiFi by checking the box in your ActiveSync settings.
Thanks. That wasn't really what I need to know. I need dto be more clear.
I don't have wifi at work (well I do, but after many attempts and a long thread here, I still cannot connect to it).
What I want to know is can I get to the internet through my hookup to my computer.

You will have to speak to your network administrator.
They could be using MAC addressing or simple password access to a proxy. Either will prevent you using the PC's internet access.
You may also find if they do allow you Internet access, any SMTP or apps that use specific ports/protocols may not work.
It's most likely just security at your work establishment!
EDIT: One way I found around it in MAC systems is to add an access point to your PC which can the copy the PC's MAC to itself and use NAT so that the network just thinks its the PC communicating (you will need another NIC in the PC). The Activesync connection does not use NAT in a correct fashion.
this should help, if you cannot view pages @ pda via AS
Accessing the proxy at work with a PC is as simple as entering the dns name in my browser setup on the PC. I an accessing it fine wiht that. IN fact they have the wireless set up so that anyone coming in visiting who is told the proxy dns name can access a 'public' wireless method. But for some reasong my Tilt will not work on either the public one or the private one which is using Peap.
I also find that at home where I know all my network setup I cannot access the Internet via hookup to the computer.
Based on all of that it must be somethign about my Tilt, or more likely, the setup.
BTW...I can access wifi at home and many other places. Just not through the USB and PC or wireless at my work place.
Pulka...I'll check out your item.
Thanks
[edit]
I just re-read Farsquidges post, and that may be something to check out at work. And I know tha tat home, my router is set up to allow specific MACS. I don't think they do that at work. but I'll see if I can get through it at home. My router will display the MACs trying to get through, and I can allow it. At least that will answer if my Tilt is even trying to get through maybe.
[edit 2]
I think I must not know how to set this up to access via the PC. I just attempted at home, and my device seemed set up for Work Network. I'll have to figure this out.

Activesync and WIFIrouter! Need solutions

Hi folks, just got my diamond almost a week ago and I already filled it up with applications, absolutely love it's wide area of functions. I came across a great idea that i could use at work: to connect the phone through activesync(that will give me internet on the phone from the computer) and then to use wifirouter app to further share this internet connection. But I couldn't get this working, because wifirouter accesses my gsm/3g internet on the phone instead of the internet obtained from the computer through activesync. Anyone got an idea how to get this working?
when u connect your phone with usb u can choose : shared internet connection. maybe then it will works dnoo
I don't think you understood, I need internet forwarding from pc to phone firstly, which I managed to do already with activesync, but I also want wifirouter application to recognize the internet being sent from the pc through activesync and not connect to edge/3g.
I think u need to setup your wifi router again this time dont set it to gprs/3g select usb to wifi. That shld work it
The wifirouter application doesnt give me any options, it just initializes and thats it.
can anyone help?
Using the USB to Wifi mode should work in this instance. That is if you're using one of the paid versions as I'm not sure if the free version supported this.

Yea i tried tht, i just cudnt get it setup. Im on windows 7 and am using a di-524 router? any help lol ?
Every Router is different and it took me a long time to figure it out.
If you are accessing it from inside your network ie WIFI
run cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all
this will give you your local ip adress
If you have remote acess enabled on your PC you can just plug in your Local IP and hit connect if your g1 is on same wifi as your pc.
From outside the network its a B****
Step one,
Hook your computer directly up to the internet. no router, just modem to cpu
Step two
ipchicken.com displays your external ip
Make sure you have remote acess enabled on your pc
make sure you have port 80 open with no restrictions
I disable my firewall completely on my pc and my modem.
Then test. If it works you have it set up right,
now comes the fun stuff
Enable your firewall on your computer, Test
I leave my firewall on my modem completely off
Now hook up your router like it used to be
Google Port Forwarding, every router is differant,
but basicly you want to set up an incoming pipe from outside your network to come in port 80 and to travel to your pc you want to acess ie 192.168.0.**
Hit apply reboot and test again
Its a bit tricky to finally get set up but once you do its awesome.
FYI i also run windows 7 so i know it works

Aight will give it one more try....2 more questions though.....i have dynamic ip do i gotta make it static and with this app does the g1 screen refresh really slowly or is it pretty gud ? (other words is video watchable on it?)
Open GL streaming is not supported by Windows Remote Desktop, VNC connections are the way around that. You must have a static IP if you want to access your computer from anywhere from anything outside your network. Otherwise no you dont need a static one if all you will be accessing is going to be at home inside your network. And no even with 3g instead of WIFI its very smooth and fast, its like having windows on your android phone.
Im using the 13$ one and it works great

or a VPN, like the VPN features added from Donut in cyanogen's rom
Port 80 has nothing to do with remote desktop. You need to have 3389 open for the RDP protocol. just FYI
