Automated text message after a missed call - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running CM 3.6.8 and every time I miss a call, my phone sends out an automated txt message to the caller.
I've searched the forums and I've searched the phone. How do I turn this feature off? Can I?
Thanks in advance.

What does the text message the caller receives? Is it gibberish or is it actually a coherent message telling the caller that your not around? I've hear of this in the past but the texts were completely incoherent so it was some sort of crazy but that a reflash took care of, but it sounds like the texts your callers get might actually be intentional. Can you provide more details?

It's acutally a legit message...
"Sorry. I'm not near my phone right now."
I'm getting tired of explaining to people that I REALLY wasn't near my phone and I'm not just screwing with them.
I'm probably guilty of being a little whiny on this one.
EDIT: I'm also running YouMail, but I've checked that six ways to Sunday and unless I'm an idiot (which is entirely possible) I can't find anything in there that would send a txt reply to a missed call).

Its got to be an app that you have that is doing it.

I will re-check the list of applications.
Any other advice?
Thanks for the help so far, I appreciate it.

I agree, if the message is legit and not looking like a computer took a dump and sent it in a text message (ie KJHHGOE*D*&R&*(*#$IHHHGIDKDKJVNNGJI))))))))))))))#00000000)
Then it must be an app that's doing it. Have you downloaded something that manages your contacts or some derivative of a missed call app that has that option maybe...

It's an app for sure, I had that at some point, auto-reply on missed calls is default. Check all apps that have anything to do with sms (sms pop-up could be the one, not sure)

I know for sure that SMS popup doesn't have options regarding auto response to a missed call. I'm pretty sure I have the latest version too...

Try intentionally missing a call and then look at the logcat logs and see what app is causing the message to go out.

Do you have the app "Power Call" that could be it.?

Thanks, I wasnt sure. We ruled that one out

Some of Mike DG's apps do that...

Agree that message is the same as the default for DGaway.

How do I register fusion voicmail? The service provider tab won't open! Neway have an idea???
it wasnt working for me but i just tried it again and it fills it in already. so i just registered. but i guess i have to wait to download something else.

Yeah the app is kinda redundant. Its a good start tho, could be better.
Not that bad...
I don't mind the app much. If you are like me, I only have 300 minutes, most of my calls are to myfaves so its free, the few minutes I have, I don't want to spend listening to prompts and voicemail. This app will save me 30+ minutes a month.
I registered on pvmplus.com after you add your first number there is an arrow that says "next" or "done" right under the place where you can add another number. The next page will ask to send you an sms and you have to enter the verification code. After that it will tell you to change your forwarding numbers under settings and it works... somewhat. I'm actually in the process of downloading a 6 second message. 5 minutes into the process...
and 2 minutes later I still haven't downloaded the 6 second message. Fusion is stuck download. I guess you can't delete the text message phone fusion sends you (that is full of numbers and crap). Will try again after I restart my phone and send a new message.
Don't delete the sms message!!
The message is some sort of information holder so the phone can access the right VM when connecting to phone fusion's server. Without the sms you can't play the VM and will have the application stay stuck trying to download the VM.

i was always under the understanding that checking your voicemail was free as well i guess i might have missed something. if you get a paper bill look at the voicemail calls to see if its indicated as a free call.

I would definitely check the bill. I'm almost positive that checking voicemail is free.
I found Fusion Voicemail confusing and annoying, personally and promptly removed it.
I didn't realize VM was free. I don't use the phone much and only had a few about 60 minutes gone, I figured it was VM.
Once you get the fusion VM started it works great.
It should be getting better in the future.
For now it works great for me. You can even customize your own personal greeting now!
The prob I had with it was that some of my calls would go straight to voicemail... even when I had a full signal and wasnt talking on the phone. I would just never get the call.
Since I have uninstalled, i dont have that problem anymore.
Hmmm, I've been having that problem as of late. Not often, but enough times that I remember it happening. Doh! I hate waiting for the recording to shut up and give me my message. OH well, damn you fusion!!

LOL, T-Mobile voicemail. It is annoying. I found YouMail, and it is the most awesome voicemail system. And if you have T-Mobile @ Home service, YouMail thinks it is a cellphone and lets you use it with your home phone too. It then emails all your phone messages to you, or you can check them the normal way.

Personal Voicemail App IDEA!!!!

OK so unless there is already an app like this I think I had a stroke of genius today...how cool would it be to have an app where you could personalize your voicemail message depending on who was calling you?!?! So if person A calls they get a specific message,if person B calls a different message comes up, obviously if the call goes to voicemail...and for everyone else it could be a default message! is this out there already or is this even possible to make?!?!?!
I think youmail has this option.

The voicemail message that a caller hears is administered by your voicemail provider (programmed into sim by default your wireless carrier). It is more or less independent of the phone and/or any apps running on it. (Otherwise your callers would be unable to leave vm if your battery died).
The only way to customize voicemail (if your carrier's vm does not provide it) is to either forward your vm calls to a vm provider that does (e.g. Youmail, PhoneFusion, etc) or use a call-forwarding service that has the vm features you want (e.g. Google Voice, 3jam, etc)
Google Voice does this and its awesome.
wouldnt there be a way that an app will answer the call after so many rings and provide a custom message per person?
This will use minutes but for people like me who have a 1000 minute plan and only use about 150/mo it wouldnt make a difference.

Check and mark! Google Voice is the perfect alternative to the carrier's bland voicemail. Plus, they transcribe the messages, so if you're someone like me who doesn't listen to his voicemail for 3 weeks, it's a pretty nice scenario.
Of course, invites are hard to come by and come from Google themselves. So this solution isn't reliable for most people. But when Google does decide to open the floodgates and allow personal invites or open to the public, this sounds like a more viable solution than a phone-based app to do this.

I don't know if apps are allowed to "answer" a call programmatically in that way. Furthermore, this would rely on the phone being powered and receiving active signal. If your battery dies or you go into a dead zone, this isn't gonna work.

Push Notifications for Google Voice on Market!

New update for google voice!! It includes (I think) push notification for text messages!
Yeah it does. Read more here: http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/faster-google-voice-experience-on.html
Yep, sure looks that way. I wonder if it's necessary to put Google Voice on ignore list for task killer apps though.

Yes it is. If you kill the GV process, you won't receive notifications.
Advanced Task Manager has "Apps", "Services", "All Apps", and "System". I think it's OK to kill it from "Apps", but not the other tabs.

You may have already done this, but it case you haven't, there's a new setting that has to be enabled for the instant notifications to work.

Same here. I had to go to my backup file in oder to use it. Thank Goodness for Back-Ups
Same here. I was, however, able to sign in after selecting "sign in using a different account" and using my same account info.
I love this update because of the sync with inbox. When I first finished installing the update I couldn't send a sms or do the sync so I just rebooted, ran fix_permissions, and that fixed everything!
The google blog post said the inbox syncing would stop the forwarding of a google voice SMS to the phone's regular SMS number. That is NOT the case for me. I'm still getting google voice SMS'es forwarded to my cell's number. This double text receiving is the single greatest aggravation of google voice texting.

That worked....but the weird thing is I don't have inbox sync as a new option. I still have the refresh option, but it says that it's the new version. I'll try to uninstall and reboot.
edit: Still no new options.
Guys, am I alone in this? The new Voice app is not syncing/pushing texts for me, nor is it not forwarding. It's behaving like the old one.

You don't understand how Voice forwarding works. The "forwarding" setting on the Voice website is for additional forwarding of a text to an email address. Voice by default has always forwarded to the cell phone number associated with the Voice account. That was supposed to end with this update.
The Google blog post says the following:
"...feature called Inbox synchronization, which will notify your Android-powered device of new text messages or voicemails within seconds of receiving new messages..."
and
"Plus, Google Voice will automatically disable SMS forwarding to your mobile phone, so you won’t receive duplicate notifications."
It's odd to me that both these features do not work. Maybe we can figure out something by discussing.
btw, why is this whining? We're discussing an app and its features. We're trying to get this working and comparing notes with others. I don't whine... ever. We're blessed to have such amazing phones and software to begin with.

ClockworkMod DesktopSMS: Sending and receiving texts from your XOOM (and desktop)

DesktopSMS forwards all your incoming SMS on your *Android Phone* to your Gmail to GTalk.
You can then reply to the chat request or email, and the response will be sent back from your phone as a text message. This is very similar to Google Voice, except you won't need a new number or anything annoying like that!
http://app.net/desktopsms
Installation:
1) Install DesktopSMS on your ANDROID PHONE. (Not onto your XOOM)
2) Login to Desktop SMS on your ANDROID ****PHONE****.
3) Install a Chat client like Google Talk (which may already be on your XOOM) onto your XOOM or desktop PC.
4) Receive a text. Watch as your text gets converted to an email and google chat message
5) Respond!
So, once again, this app is only installed on your phone. Then just install your favorite IM client on your desktop and tablet, and the rest will work magically!
You do not need to install this on both your phone and tablet like other apps. You do not need to be on the same network like other apps. This all works by magic (my servers).
Let me know what you think. This is in a free beta right now, so be prepared for some bugs! I'd love to hear your feedback.
Wrote you a PM
well, I don't have a smart phone so thats a problem.
I, like many others, have ditched their smartphomes and activated their xooms. I now only have a dummy phone. I didn't see a need in paying for two data plans because I ws rarey using my phone. Now I use it to talk and text.... even though I wish it was only to talk.
I am waiting for the day that I can SMS on my Xoom using my current phone number. Guess I'll jabe to keep waiting. lol
Works awesome...just had a conversation with myself, through gtalk. Hahaha havnt tried it with my xoom yet. But im pretty sure it will work just fine. Very good job
It looks great but I cannot seem to get it to work yet, Mr. Koush. I have it signed it with push notifications successfully on my gmail account on my OG Droid. I can do the test message from within the app and it pops up on my phone like always, but other than that it does nothing on my Xoom, or on anything else for that matter. It seems almost like the push notifications are not even being sent out.
EDIT: I found out what the problem was. I had the default messaging app totally disabled, as I am using Handcent SMS as a complete replacement to the default one. I would like to use Handcent SMS instead of the default one. I know its beta and I cannot wait for updates!

It looks like after you receive your first text from that person after you accepted the "chat invite" on your Gtalk account it syncs up with your current contact list automatically. It shows the phone number on the left side of the screen under your gmail account, but in the chat window it shows that contacts name in parenthesis.
This ofcourse is for if you are using the Xoom with Gtalk, such as myself. I haven't tried anything else yet.
Could it be that the contacts NAME will be in the gtalk LIST instead of phonenumber ?
OK, being a bit thick here.
I'm using GoSMS Pro, but as far as I know, the default messaging app is still active, just without any notifications... does this make a difference?
Not currently receiving any notifications in email or g-talk... :/

Is it possible that your push servers are blocked in China?
I can correctly Login with Google Account, but get an error on 'registering with push server....' (takes long and eventually times out)
Error message: "Login failed. Please check your password. If the error persists, please send a log to the developer"
here is a log... maybe it helps analyze why i can't connect with the push servers...

So that's cool, then I send the test. GoSMS then pops up the text, as it always does.
However, it still doesn't appear to be sending me an email.
When it says "please verify that it has not disabled SMS notifications in the application's settings", does it mean the default Messaging app?
I've tested by disabling the taskbar notification for GoSMS and re-enabling it for the default Messaging app, but even then, there is no sound nor visual cue that an SMS has arrived... is this why it's not working? Has GoSMS broken my default messaging app?

Receiving notifications when hangouts is open.....

So why is it when I have hangouts open it doesn't notify me of a incoming message but if I leave the app it works as intended. This is a really annoying bug that persist across all ROMs I've tried. Nothing more frustrating than texting and coming back an hour later and having missed texts with notifications yet had I backed out of the app or pressed the home button it would have worked just fine. Is there a setting I am missing somewhere???? Thanks.
it's not a bug, it's by design.
do you really want to be notified that a message that you're already reading has been delivered? what would be the point? seems kind of redundant to me

I tend to agree with the OP. More than once I've sent a text and put my phone down without leaving Hangouts. Then when I pick it up at some later point I see I received a text back without any notification.

This. I'll text someone and set my phone down and continue working. Only to pick it up an hour later and see I received a text an hour ago. Maybe some find it redundant but I sure don't. Wish this was a simple on/off that could be changed in the settings.
It wasn't like this in KK though. Whether it outright notified you or not I cannot remember, but I never missed texts in open windows like I do in LP. Odd......
It is a bug, in that it should provide the notification *if the screen is off*.
This has been driving me batty... I can't believe it's not sending notifications when the screen is off. If there were a choice I would prefer all notifications all the time over a broken feature.
