maintain GPS fix with screen off... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I've been using iGO for my navigation software which has a power save function which means if there is say 30 miles before the next command, the screen will dim and eventually turn off. But it seems that my tilt turns GPS off when the screen goes off. When I come to the next command, nothing happens. I manually turn the screen on, then the gps reconnects.
is the phone always in sleep mode when the screen is off?
is there away to turn the screen off but maintain a GPS fix?
Thanks.

no you can get apps which just blank the screen
and some apps support using a hardkey to toggle the screen

Programs stop when I shut the screen off (on AT&T Tilt/ HTC Kaiser)

When turning off the screen (on my AT&T Tilt), the programs stop running. Active sync disconnects, Wi-Fi disconnects, voice recorder pauses, and etc. Does anyone know if there is a setting on the phone that will let these programs run in the background with the screen off? Or a configuration tool (3rd party software) that can do this?
To clarify further, all the programs run okay when the screen is dimmed (backlight off). The problem is when I press the "Power" button (quickly) to shut the screen off (but not turning off the phone completely, I can still get calls, but all the buttons are locked except power button, but thats okay). When I do that (to save power), the problem is the Wi-Fi disconnects, Active Sync disconnects, and the voice recorder pauses recording. Then everything resumes again when I turn the screen back on. On my laptop when I am organizing or reading files, favorites, music, videos, etc. and transferring files back and forth it runs the laptop battery down because the screen has to be partially on (you can still see the time even though it is dimmed out, and the phone gets very hot too after a while like this, I know there is a way to shut off charging, but I still want to charge and work with the files on the phone with my laptop, but I don't need the phone's screen to be on). So it would be nice if Active Sync kept working with the screen off (rather than just dimmed out).
The Wi-Fi disconnects too when the screen is shut off, which is okay unless you are doing the same work organizing/ transferring files over a wireless link with a LAN network (especially if you left your data cord elsewhere). I know I could just have it dim and not turn the screen off, but it still wastes allot of power even with a dim screen.
Also I use the voice recorder for dictation, meetings, and long conferences, so the battery runs down as long as it is recording (If I tap the power button (to turn off the screen) it pauses the recording, when I tap it again and the screen turns back on it resumes recording). Perhaps there is a 3rd party voice recorder application that keeps running regardless of the display screen being turned on or off (but I have not been able to find one, thats why I think there may be a setting I am missing to allow programs to run in the background even if the screen is off).
this is a BIG miss in WM6. it was posible in WM5.
we also talk about this inability to turn only the backlight off in WM6,

unfortunately it seems that untill now noone have found a solution for this

How to auto lock device when backlight turns off

i was wondering if there is a tweak or something to auto lock the device (using the built in WM lock function) when the backlight turns off? I know there is a program by vijay555 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=261178 which auto locks the device after it goes into standby (or when it wakes up) but im looking for something which locks the device when the backlight turns off....
any help?
I use HomeScreen++ for this and tons of other functions.

[Q] Screen goes black during call, CM10.1 dialer

Hiya folks. Running CM10.1 stable on my targa (aka Droid Bionic). It was beautiful except for lack of nav dock support, a problematic Google Now (different problem, with workaround), and this particular problem, which I hope someone know what I am talking about...
When a call comes in and I answer by the slider, the screen goes black, whether or not I held the phone up to my head.
I cannot turn the screen back on. None of the buttons seem to do anything, though backlight for the 4 hard buttons does turn on indicating that some command was received by the touchscreen. Not even the power button will bring the screen back during the call.
If the other party hangs up, the phone goes back to normal.
With screen off, I can't hang up.
I can hang up if my Bluetooth headset was connected and I hang up with that.
I've searched all over and this issue seem to be a pretty popular issue last December across all CM 10 builds. However, I don't know if this was ever resolved for this build.
I can't find an option in the ROM to just flat "turn off face proximity detection" either. Or in any way to "tweak" it.
CPU-Z says my proximity sensor is working, so I guess it's just not calibrated properly for the dialer?
Can we get a "special hidden tweaker" much like the light sensor tweak for the auto-brightness levels?
Figured it out. It wasn't CM. It was Screebl and the stupid orientation sensor, and how the Launcher is fixed to portrait mode.
I think I had my phone laid down and it's at a diagonal so it's in landscape mode, and the phone's fine with that when it's just showing contacts. Screebl kicks in and determines that landscape, phone orientation says stay on, so screen stayed on. It was set to turn off the screen IMMEDIATELY when the orientation goes out of "viewing range". (Saving batteries, ya know).
When the call was answered, Screebl should have turned itself off (i.e. ignore input while call is in progress). But it didn't. The "answer the phone" screen flipped the display back to portrait mode. The phone, still laid flat, in "landscape", is now "out of viewing range", and Screebl turned off the screen.
Strange interaction among the various apps, yes.
I'm still trying to figure out how to make my Bionic, with extended battery last the whole day. Juicedefender Ultimate somehow just keeps turning the screen back on every X seconds (taking root control for SOMETHING) and Wakelock detector says the phone is not going into enough deep sleep (kinda like me, hahaha)

How does the screen dimming/time out actually work?

This has always been confusing and I am looking for clarification on the Lock Screen/ Screen dimming, etc.
So I went into the display settings and set it not to turn off for 1 minute. Then I checked the power saving settings just to be sure the screen would not go dim or lock after 5 seconds. That did not work. Then I checked the security settings to see if something was over ridding every other time out setting and I am lost. Either these settings have never really worked since the original note and android/ google is lazy or I am not doing something right.
Dose anyone have a step by step walk through of all the settings that would affect when the screen dimms and when it locks? (Sometimes I am running music through blue tooth and I don't want to the screen to dim for specific applications also. There has to be a setting somewhere because Google Maps does not allow the screen to dim or lock when in nav mode.

I really wish someone would have answered your question. Mainly since I have the same freaking problem.
When the phone app is running, I am constantly getting dimmed, seconds only to do something.
Tonight I was using an app that monitors BBQ temperatures. Always dims to fast. Set the screen timeout for 10 minutes. Still dimmed after 30 seconds or so.
How does this work? I'm not sure the screen timeout setting does anything.
The screen diming feature is part of the auto brightness function and works by using the ambiant light sensor to adjust the brightness of the display. According to the amount of light detected in front of the display.
Screen locking happens when you haven't used your device for a specific amount of time.

It dims before it locks. That's what I was referring to. I think the OP was as well.
I set the display for 10 minute timeout. It dims and locks the screen in less than a minute. I can't figure out how to stop it.
Is that a clearer question?
Well my screen dims for some seconds before going out, but, always as per the time I set , for instance, if I set to go out after 5 mins of inactivity, it dims after 4 mins 55 seconds, then goes out, I dont use autobrightness, and I use entertainment mode
It was secure lock time setting.
It was disregarding the screen timeout.

Lock screen will not sleep

I have an odd issue where when I get a notification or wake my phone to the lock screen but not unlock it, the lock screen will never timeout. The lock screen just stays on until I manually sleep the screen again. This happens 9/10 times. If I wake the phone upright, the screen will go back to sleep in the normal 10 seconds. Also if I wake the phone while it's flat on a table, then lift the phone, it will dim, then go to sleep as usual. I tried a factory reset without restoring from a backup and it's still going on. Anyone have ideas? It's killing my battery and it hardly makes it through a day.
