Connection questions (again...sorry) - Touch Diamond2, Pure Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
Since last week I also have a TD2. It's a Vodafone-branded TD2 from NL. I've read a lot here about the dataconnections, but I think that I still don't know how I have to configure it for my purposes. What I would like:
1. When there is a known wifi (i.e. @home of @work), I'd like to have the TD2 connected to that wifi, instead of the payed (and slower) connection. How can I configure this?
2. I would like to have my email checked every 5 minutes. What I understood from reading here, it should be possible that the dataconnection closes after the check, and reconnects when the mail should be checked again (I hope I understood it right). This should improve batterylife. Is it true and how do I configure this?
3. I would like to have a notification (sound) when a new mail arrives, but not when I'm sleeping. Is there a simple tool that gives automatically a silent notification (so no sound and no vibration) from i.e. 22.00h until 7.00h? The phone/sms should NOT be silent then (since it could be an emergency-call). Of course all could be silent in a simple way when I want to, just like now.
I hope that any of you can help me configure this since I've read too much I think; I don't get it anymore....Thanx in advance!

Regarding point 2, why do you want to close the data channel every time? If it's not being used it shouldn't affect battery life. It might even make battery life worse if every five minutes you request another ip address and internet connectivity. Not to mention giving your network a hard time!

I understood that a non-closed data connection uses battery power. But if it isn't, it makes it a lot easier.

Kaiser Automatic email retrieval wont turn off

hi gurus
i have a big problem
i live in the uk, and have had my Kaiser for approx a month.
absolutely fantastic.
Only issue is that i need to regularly check my email. so i have set my settings to automatically retrieve email.
It does that superbly. but the problem lies there. i have an unlimited data plan (so called limits me to 2gb), When automatically retrieving my email every 2 hours. the connection remains and does not turn off. thus eating into my allowance and racking up a higggggggggggh bill as going over the 2gb is £1 p/mb
Any chance anyone can help me either with a reg edit or just simple settings to disconnect after checking mail. even after 10mins. or 5 mins.
please help gurus
How is the connection eating in to your allowance by just being on?
Surely it will only eat in to your allowance if it's actually downloading something...
thats what i thought but, im just doouble checking. i thought an active connection regardless of dowloading or surfing is still consuming data... maybe?
I'd assume it isn't.
There is probably some software you can use to monitor the data usage to make sure.
I'm sure somebody can recommend something that does the job.
Theres a bandwidth monitor that comes on the CD with the Kaiser.
And as far as I know it does eat some data just being on (networky type keep alive / config signals).
I have noticed this more when moving between locations (and presumably switching cells needed re-establishing the connections).
Can't say how much per day this uses though.
HIH
Joe
I don't think you are using any data (well maybe the odd byte to keep the connection alive).
Try http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/gprsmonitor/?en - I use this to track my data usage. It works well for me.

TNTY II and skype

I have just installed skype which seems to be working fine. The only problem I have is that the unit has to be left switched on. If it goes into power save mode it seems to drop the WLAN connection so does not ring when someone calls me on my skype in number. Any ideas how to get this to work as the power drain on battery means that I have to leave the handset plugged into the mains.
I am also keen to change the ring tone but am unsure if this is possible as there are no options on the set up for the mobile skype.
All help and ideas greatly appreciated.
using skype, did the video camera work?
As far as I know the camera dosenst work....
Well I dont know if it's possible. But the Data connection useres alot of batery, so it may be a problem, even if the display itself is switched off.
This phone is sold as a high end Business device etc. yet its impossible to use the video camera with yahoo , sykpe etc. What is the point of offering a front facing camera designed to be used for web type use if it will not work
I still cannot believe the HTC head engineer allowed this phone to be sold with such silly issues
Skype works here on but only on speaker and not with the Telephone speaker. Is there a solution for that??
I've got a slightly different issue besides the fact we can't use the camera. I tried both fring and skype for VoIP, but in both cases the voice quality is always pretty bad. The moment I use the phone as a modem and skype with someone over a laptop, the quality is perfect.
I am currently using skype version 2.1.0.65 on the vario III, as I read somewhere that older versions work better with the Vario III. The quality seems to be slightly better than when I had the latest version of Skype Mobile installed, but it's still far from using it to have a decent conversation. I wonder how everybody else on this forum is managing to speak over skype or fring... Or is everybody having the same issue ?
Thanks

Hi, try to use Kaiser Tweak from this forum and enable WiFi on sleep mode. Haven't tried this myself, but it should work.
Greetz,
Hans Olo
Is there a video option on Skype for Windows Mobile in the first place?!
Guys thanks for the input and help. My skype is working fine so voice calls over a wlan connection is perfect and not sure what was meant by speaker and telephone speaker but the volume controls and microphone quality mean that you can connect to skype as a phone or handsfree phone.
Will try the Kaiser tweaks to see if that does anything and will let you know.
Haven't tried the camera but I guess it doesn't work but that doesn't really bother me. Too many camera's out there these days watching ou anyway

Why do you persist in knocking this phone at every oppourtunity?
Please tell me which phone can be used with yahoo, skype etc? I won't hold my breath for a reply, because, these services are cut-down, mobile versions of the PC based software and don't even offer video calling! So why is it HTC's fault if the people who wrote the software didn't build that function in?! Maybe they should have held back releasing this phone because my Network doesn't offer HSDPA in my area, or I can't get coverage in the middle of the Pacific, or the GPS signal is crap in the middle of the channel tunnel?! Because that is clearly HTC's fault too by your logic...
And I think you'll find the front camera is designed for 3G video calls, not web type work...so frankly, you are a bit of a Paper Hat for moaning about this really aren't you?
[/RANT]
Back on topic, changing the ring tone, not an option unfortunately, least as far as I could find after trawling through the settings options and the registry and the actual program directories.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with Kaiser Tweak to leave WiFi active whilst is sleep mode as it will still eat up battery since the WiFi is still active. With Skype using the WiFi connection to connect, WiFi will need to be 'always-on' thus any saving you make from leaving it on during sleep mode will be negligable (I would have thought). External power (or a huge battery) is the only option.
Still it is nice to at least have the option of Skype Mobile!
Have to agree with you about the phone as I think it's awesome and the best phone I've ever bought for functionality. Don't understand the web camera thing either - just use a laptop if you want that.
Shame about the ring tone as would prefer just the normal modern skype one but it's not gonna bother me that much.
Online on the lan I actually get a decent battery life anyway when on all the time so get a good 4-6 hours on just connected which is pretty damned good.

Actually last time I really used a WiFi connection seriously was approx 4yrs ago (when you could still use ActiveSync via Wifi) and my device at the time would be dead in an hour so if you are getting 4-6 hours of uptime I would view that as excellent!

Diamond Battery 3G question and also GPS

Hi Everyone,
First post here so hopefully you guys can help. Been doing a lot of reading of the site over the last few hours since I got my Diamond - looks great. Am usually very literate in these things but have always tended to be an S60 guy so now breaking into the WM world properly..
Anyway, there are two things I wanna run by you which I'm sure you guys may know..
1. Battery/3G
As we all know, the battery sucks.. There's no denying that. I refuse to switch from 3G to 2G though cos that spoils the object. I have already conceded by turning HSDPA off and am now on normal 3G as it is. One of the things that can't be good for the battery is that it connects to check emails and then stays connected.. Whereas the beauty of the iPhone for example is that if you tell it to poll your imap server every 15 mins, it connects, checks and downloads and the disconnects. It connects again another 15 mins later.
I've set my Diamond to poll every 30 mins in the hope that it would then disconnect once it has downloaded the emails rather than staying connected for hours and hours at a time to the internet even though it's only checking my email server every 30 mins or so.. you follow?
So, I downloaded Advanced Customisation and have turned off the Auto Attach feature.. But what it does is stop the Diamond auto connecting the first time.. but then once it's connected, it stays connected to the internet.
You follow me?
Basically, I want a way for the phone to disconnect from the net when it has checked for messages then reconnect when it's time to check automatically again. Rather than staying connected or me having to switch to a manual check. Is that possible guys? Maybe that will help with the battery.
2. GPS/Battery
Other thing I heard was that if you go into the GPS settings and change the program port from Port 4 to None, then it saves on battery life. Only downside is that you then have to fiddle with the settings before you fire up Tom Tom or Google Maps. Is there any truth that the phone is always looking for GPS satellites even when satnav software is not switched on.
3. ALARM
Oh actually - there is a third question.
Is there a way of having the phone on silent but alarm clock on so that I can sleep knowing I will be woken up by the alarm but NO phone calls. It's a basic thing in Symbian/Blackberry/S40 but seems to be missing on my Diamond?
Thanks all - i have googled and searched through the forums looking for answers to these questions but had no luck.. Hopefully you can post some answers.
Have a good day and thanks in advance
Phil
I'm pretty sure that just because it's connected ie. the E or 3G symbol on the signal strength bar. It doesn't pull extra juice, extra power is only required to transfer data and not to 'maintain' the connection.
if your area has great 3G connectivity, then you could set the phone to 3G only instead of auto, cause that's what usually saps the power, the phone constantly trying to find the best band when it's feels that the signal strength isn't good enough.

you can just put the phone on flight mode. that way no one will bother you with phone calls. (not tried it but i think it will work)

Hi
BTW, to set to 3G only, is it UMTS(800+2100) or UMTS(1700) in the UK?
Cheers
Sorry i'm from MAlaysia so I wouldn't know your settings. But in anycase you can leave that at AUTO. Just force it to UMTS instead of GSM or AUTO

UMTS in the UK is 2100.
So 900+2100 i suppose

I think you need to set the auto disconnect drop down in Advanced Config. I've set it to 10 secs and it works for me.

There is an easier way... Just turn down the call volume to zero, leave system volume up. This will keep the alarm ringing, but calls won't bother you.
SMS messages however will also still ring. So if you are afraid of being woken up by those, just turn them off in the notifications setting.
Oh yeah, and don't forget to turn up the volume of calls again after you wake up I missed some calls because of that, hehe.

Using Push Internet

I just got my TD2 yesterday. Been trying to figure out the settings for the push internet, but i can't seem to find the option to use WiFi connection instead of data connection.
Also i realised that the scheduling doesnt allow to set the minute only the hour.
Does anyone have this problem?
No one has any problem using this feature?
If you have WiFi on it should just use it I guess? Otherwise what you can do is setup your preferred connection not to be the mobile web one so it doesn't try and connect to the net over GPRS/3G.
I tried using Wifi, but it doesnt work. I still need to manually pull the sites.
When your phone goes into standby the WIFI connection turns off to save the battery, so unless you have your phone set to never turn off and keep WIFI active all the time its unlikely that it will use WIFI to push internet pages to you. Very little point doing it that way since you'd never have the phone last long enough to get out of the house in the morning.
Oh I reckon I know what might be wrong. You also need to change the schedules of when the phone polls for sites. You do it by day and stuff and do a start time. Once you visit each site once then that'll start the ticker so to speak. Mine autodownloaded at the set intervals after that.
Thanks Shuflie, u have a good point.. there is no point updating it via wifi. It needs to use a data connection. Thanks
DaBountyHunter: Thanks for the advice.. but i really think the problem is that i dont have a data plan with my telco.. i cant rely on WIFI since it disables whenever the phone goes into standby.
hi,
i'm a little bit confused about this feature!
i addet 4 sites to my list and if i got it right, there is a grey arrow if its updating and a green if its finished! is that correct?
but, when i surf on a site with a green arrow i can only see the main page, because if i tip any link on this it says error!
thats a total mess, the deep of min one link is essential...
do i something wrong or is this feature only a dream!??
I believe it only updates the pages on the main page. It doesnt save the entire site (i wished it did) cos it seems rather redundant when it only saves the main page.
hopefully someone can make a fix that it also loads the linked pages but i think it takes up too much memory/battery life and for example on news sites you only need the headlines, and if you want to read the article you'll have to wait a bit.
(for the Dutch, use tweakers.net/nieuws on your phone, it loads the articles instead of headlines)
well then in my opinion this feature is senseless!
quite true.. senseless.. might as well just use RSS feeds.
I still haven't received my TD2 (seems like it takes time for other languages as I'm looking for a french one which should be shipped on the 8th of May) but I still have a question regarding push internet feature.
What happens when roaming? Is there a way to disable it while on another network? Like a "disable while roaming" feature? Knowing the fees for data roaming, I don't want to spend money every time I'm going in another country...
yes, there is a 'disable when roaming' feature.

i tried that, also tried many other things but i am almost defintely sure the 'add push page' is simply a bookmark button. the main conclusion for this is that i dont get any notification of the 'auto pull' and it still attempts to connect to HSDPA when opening one of these push pages
I stopped using it because it only updates the top page.
Where are the oush internet settings on rom official rom version 2.53?

Instant Messenger clients always disconnecting, please help

Does anyone know exactly what is causing this problem because it continues to happen across different ROMs and different Radios. Is there some fundamental reason why the X1 can't maintain a connection with IM clients?
I'm on T-mobile in the UK and running the valkyrie_V3 WWE ROM. Windows live messenger will disconnect if i put the phone into standby for as little as a minute and sometimes even when I'm in the middle of messaging. I keep getting messages saying "wireless connection not available trying to reconnect" or something similar.
I've tried IM+ and while that doesn't give disconnection messages it's doing the same thing as i have tested it using different accounts.
I can't get ebuddy working on this ROM because it won't let me enter the password for some odd reason but that has had the same problem with other ROMS in the past.
Has anyone found a solution to this or is it something to do with T-mobile settings?
I should point out that throughout all this i maintain a good signal of at least 2 bars and according to the phone the data connection hasn't dropped.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
i used to use AOL's own mobile-based IM/chat client for AIM, and it always kept me connected without problems no matter what. only problem was it was INSANELY slow.
i've switched to slick, which i'm not crazy about, and i'm having the same problems as you. i'll randomly get disconnected with the phone sitting with full HSDPA reception, not going into sleep or standby....i thought it was just slick's crappy programming
Which network are you on?
Also are you 100% sure AOL used to stay connected because i thought the same thing about IM+ but a lot of my messages weren't getting returned. I signed into 2 different accounts, one on PC one on phone to test and it turned out the same thing was happening just not as obviously.
This is really frustrating, my old K800i used to stay connected to windows live for days at a time, my friends blackberry also has no trouble staying connected.
i too have the same problem, we need the xda gurus to fix this, hopefully they would be able to do so in the near future

pretty sure it was connected constantly. i had some pretty lengthy text sessions and i never got any error messages (IM not received, user not on, signed off, etc). i mean, i can never be 100% sure, but pretty sure. i only used it fo ra couple weeks before getting rid of it, it was creeping death slow for some reason
I'm too really desperate for a solution to this problem. My device is a HTC Touch Pro2 running Windows Mobile 6.5.
The case is that I will launch a new business site in just a few weeks whos customers are for the biggest part young intellectuals more often than seldomly really integrated with the modern IT-development. Hence I've always wanted to add the Windows Live messenger plugin to the site so that our customers can have a live chat completly anonymously without having their IP traced and logged which is the case for the markets paid services. Furthermore, the msn live plugin is completly ad free and doesn't cost a penny. The paid services out there that other corporations use for their live chat often comes with an URL to the host even though the customer are paying for their live chat module. The most important part though, is that I can bring with me Windows Live Messenger wherever I go which for the most part is a complex and not even that usual solution in the paid service segment. I think you can understand my problem now =) I'm just desperate to have my live messenger in the phone ALWAYS and ALWAYS stay connected.
For an example of the plugin I'm refering too have a look at my personal website:
martinandersson.com
A little more specific information describing what really happens with my device:
Windows Live version: 10.7.0061.0500.2000. Language: Swedish (Also the language of my OS).
I am running the client non-exclusivly. It always stays in the taskbar and never quit on me unlike what happens to programs that stay open running in the background for a longer period of time. In that way, it works great.
The main Windows Live window's (which are displayed and runned as a seperate program) options/settings are set to sync my e-mail although the frequency are set to "manual" and the other options below this drop box are for some reason greyed out. I guess this has to be interpreted as if live doesn't sync my mail at all, which I like being that I do not have an hotmail account or need this feature in any way.
The status of my phone always always show two small 3G icons (one just '3G' and one '3G' above a meter) and if I click in this field I see a ticking clock which shows that it is indeed connected to internet ever since my phone's last reboot. This has never been in any other way. Still, I did download the DiamondTweak and enabled the "internet always on" feature, but again, I do not think that really was the issue and from what I can tell, the DiamondTweak just hasn't made any difference at all.
One detail of great importance is this; Whenever I browse the internet, update my rss feeds or switch to the messenger contact list window through the taskbar, the 3G symbols changes to display an H. That tells me that this "H" must show for the phone to have a "real" internet connection? Could this be the trick, one has to find a fix to always have the H show? If that would be the case, I just can't understand why the phone says it is indeed connected to the internet when there's just a 3G-symbol in the status. Anyways..
Even though the messenger dies completly and just as what this threads owner wrote, shows a "wireless connection lost" message when I swich to its contact list window, it sometimes live for quite a while. The thing is that it just doesn't get the message instantly. The phone can be in standby mode (really haven't figured that thing out, everybody keeps saying "standby" mode but for what I can tell all that happens is that the display goes of) for sure, and then I write myself a message through the live chat plugin on my site but it takes about 6 to 10 minutes for the phone to give a sound and notice me of this message. And again, for the most part the live messenger doesn't stay alive for that long, the sites plugin goes offline and then if I turn the phone's display on and access the live messenger it says that the wireless connection has been lost and reconnects.
Moreoever, it never gets my plugin to go back online either. For that part to happen, I have to first get online with a desktop client and then again login with my phone. For if I stay online with the desktop client, the phone's client is indeed alive, but won't receive any messages. I have to reconnect with my phone so that my desktop client gets thrown out. But of course, is just a matter of time before my live chat module and my phone's client gets offline and I have to do everything over again. The really annoying part is that the phone's client dies a long time before the site's plugin catch up and goes offline. Hence I might loose a lot of customers who think they are chatting with me but never get a reply.
Given the description above, I think the problem really is that live messenger doesn't ping or talk with its server that often, IF the phone is in standby mode. If it isn't, if the display is turned on, I recieve my messages instantly and everything works just fine. Sure there must be an easy fix for this problem, a small edit to be done in a config file somewhere?
All help and all problem experience is much appreciated.
