If you have an actual Android Dev phone, load the ADP cupcake ROM from HTC's website. It will update it automatically.
Else, get RC29 (the one from the root thread, its named DREAIMG.nbh )

Not sure about #1 but as far as your unrooting is concerned... I would just go back to RC29 and wait for the updates. T-Mobile officially confirmed that Cupcake updates begin on May 11.
here is the link for unrooting your phone, finding the update from rc29 to rc 33 took me an hour searching, and i don't have the link atm but this will get you started

you want the g1 original spl and your radio will aoutomatically be downgraded
Thank you for all your help. One last thing you said the original spl correct. and will the rc 29 start to automaticaly update? so get the original spl and the dream fil should I let it totaly reboot after the spl or take it straight to the dream file?
do the spl first let it reboot, then do your img file that will put you at original firmware and rc 29, you can then wait for ota updates, or you can search around the forums for a full update from rc 29 to rc 33 its around here somewhere just not easy to find

Stuck at 1.5 cannot upgrade to 1.6

I had the latest (non beta) cyanogen mod installed, and I downloaded a theme (marks or something) via the CM Updater after the reboot the phone was screwed.. stock on the "G1" screen..
I had to flash back to RC29 and have manually updated back up to "cupcake"
but when I try to update to 1.6 I cant.. error..
Ive tried downloading what is supposed to be the correct file. (signed-kila-DRC83-from-CRC1.c41b93c1.zip)
from several different places.. no joy.
Im wondering if (eventually) it will automatically update.. ??
Firmware 1.5
Build CRB43
and No, I do not want another modded rom, it was fun to play with, but Im over it.

So you tried to re-root?
You were suppose to flash the cyan rom again.
I think you lose root by flashing the RC29 which you werent suppose to do.
It will auto update soon.
Actually yup that RC thingy takes root away..
I could care less if I have root. I just want it stock and up to date.

Yes. <10 char>
so basically u cant jailbreak ur phone from 1.6 anymore right? u have to downgrade to 1.5 or rc29? is that correct?
It's all here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606147
If you have 1.6, you gotta do:
1.6 --> 1.5 --> RC29
awesome figured it out thanks
Glad to hear. Let us know if anything else comes us.

Do you mean unroot?
If you want to unroot from RC29 - wait for the OTA (Over the Air) update. The OTA will remove root.
If you wanted to go back to a ROM (like Hero, because it uses 1.5) you'll need to upgrade to from RC29.
If you just want to remove root, keep the RC29 and wait for an OTA update to be pushed to your phone.
ohhh okay so i upgrade to cupcake if i want hero from rc29..and i need to root before the ota update to 1.6 is that right?

Yes. Cupcake is 1.5, which is required for Hero to run. Also, if you decide to run a Hero ROM, make sure you have the appropriate SPL and Radio.
and i need to root before the ota update to 1.6 is that right?

If you root before the OTA, you will not receive an OTA. To go back to stock, don't touch the phone (in the sense that don't flash any ROMs) after your at RC29. When at RC29, you will be getting an update from T-Mobile to update (which will remove root).
sorry if im annoyying u aka lol i want to root and im at rc29 right now. i have to get to 1.5 to root right? and to get to 1.5 do i wait for an ota or manually update it myself?
okay wait im on 1.5 and i downloaded the flashrec prog like in the guide and the recovery file and downloaded the flashrec and typed in the /sdcard/recovery-ra-dream-v1.5.3.img and see nothing that says download custom recovery image. i am on 1.5 by the way.
Haha not a problem at all .
Sorry, I didn't understand what you were saying.
If you are already at RC29, and you want root, you need to first upgrade to 1.5.
Sorry bout that, you are correct

Depends. Do you want a rooted or non-rooted.
If you want rooted do you want stable or experimental?
If you want non-rooted then it's 1.6.
If you want a stable rooted then use CM-5.0.8.
If you want to try an experimental then try CM-6.0.0-RC2.
If you want a list of rooted roms look here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668090
Can't find the link? Try looking!
thank you very much, but ive found links to 1.6, but none of them work when trying to have them opened and flashed on my g1, i went to the newest rooted rom, but i think its rather slow, and would rather have the non rooted 1.6
Download DREAIMG.NBH from anywhere and wait for the phone to automatically say "an update is available" or you can download cupcake 1.5 then the 1.6 patch.
JUST GOOGLE IT!!!!!!
lol ive googled it! and have found liek 30 links of the 1.6 update, but they dont work!
What do you mean they don't work? Your phone is rooted, right? Then download any software from here (it does not have to be official 1.6 update, I suggest Dwang as a fastest G1 software I've seen) and flash it through recovery (remember to wipe first). It's really simple and I don't know how it might not work.
im saying, like if i unroot, and go back to stock and start from 1.0, and then i find one of the links on the internet that is the 1.6 donut update, while flashing, it will say theres a error and missing like x number of files and not work.
But i see what your saying thank you

[Q] Help updating to 2.32.651.2

I rooted my wife's Hero with the z4 method, I couldn't get unrEVOked to work for us, and removed some bloat with Titanium Backup.
I only did it out of my own curiosity, no particular need. She's running 2.31.651.7 and now an OTA update for 2.32.651.2 is being pushed out. She's a "I just want my phone to work" type, so I'd like to get her this OTA installed for her peace of mind.
I restored the uninstalled apps and "unrooted" in z4, but when I tell the auto-updater to go ahead with the OTA it just dies 1/4 of the way into the install and pops the exclamation point graphic.
Any thoughts? Any other Hero owners have success with a (formerly) rooted 2.31.651.7 to 2.32.651.2 upgrade?
(I searched around, no one seemed to have any threads indicating they got this to work... only ones saying they were able to root 2.32.651.2)
You could install Htc sync on your comp. then d/l the .7 ruu then try to update from the phone.

If you have a custom recovery on it you can flash NFX's .2 update rom

The only downloads available at htc.com are the latest version of HTC Sync and the 2.27.x.x Eclair release. The Eclair release would completely wipe and reset the device, which is a huge pain in the butt.
Any other thoughts?
Anyone know how to retrieve the log file from the update process? Maybe I can debug what is failing.
Skylar you have to install the .7 ruu (which takes about 10 mins.) Then once the .7 ruu is installed and phone is booted back up go to system updates and update ota. That should do it ,I agree with kyoko I would have flashed nfinite's .2 rom same thing as the .2 update from sprint

I think you're confused.
I'm on .7
I can't update to .2 (it fails)
There is no downloadable RUU .2 or .7 available from HTC
HTC does have a published file from the original Eclair rollout to the Hero... but it wipes EVERYTHING off the device, including apps and data.
I don't want to start over
