ADB/Term app install/uninstall

I'm having trouble finding a definitive way of uninstalling/installing apps onto my phone. this is what I've found.
Either through terminal or ADB:
mount -o rw,remount /system (another thread had mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs, /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system... or something along those lines)
rm -r /system/app/appname.apk
That only seemed to work for com.amazon.mp3.apk.
I've used astro file manager to find out the app names, for example on CM 4.0.4 he has the Work email, which I don't use. Under astro it is called just "Mail". I tried removing mail.apk and i've tried removing com.htc.android.mail.apk (which is what the app says under astro) but I cannot remove that one, nor any of the easier ones (camera.apk etc...). Only amazon mp3 was removed.
Am I missing something?
Also, installing apps. I am having trouble finding out how to push your own.
Any help with these?

Easiest way would be to get root explorer off the market.
Or with adb do

adb shell
rm /system/app/xxxx.apk (or if that doesn't work put -r after rm
In recovery console do

mount system
rm /system/app/xxx.apk (or -r if doesn't work)
Thats how i remove system apps.

I tried rebooting into the console and trying this, here's what I got.
# Mount System
# rm /system/app/com.amazon.mp3.apk (this one works)
# rm /system/app/mail.apk
rm: cannot remove '/system/app/mail.apk' : No such file or directory
# rm /system/app/com.htc.android.com.apk
rm: cannot remove '/system/app/com.htc.android.com.apk' : No such file or directory
the others don't. I am finding the root address the same as with amazon mp3.
I am running CM 4.1.9. I tried it with 4.0.4 but I get the same issue. Only app that comes out is the amazon mp3. I am trying to delete the Work Email, Voice Dialer and push in the My Faves.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Filenames are case sensitive.
/system/app/Mail.apk
/system/app/Camera.apk
Go to your apps directory to see the filenames with

Help create a script to remove .apk's on CM.9999 PLZ??

ok now there is a few apps i dont like that come in the ROM like

now im tired that everything i flash i need to go trew terminal to delete these apps can i like write a script that i can run an do all of these for me? (is that what scripts can do?) can some one help me out

I know that you CAN, I just don't know exactly how... but I'm interested as well, so here's hoping someone with the knowledge lays it on you.

im about to leave right now, but when i get back i can write it up .. i usually delete VoiceDialer/VoiceSearch and Amazon everytime I flash a new ROM

IIRC, miketaylor00 posted up a script a while back to automatically remove a couple apps. I sent him a message with a link to this thread, but it looks like the board's Dominicano can help.

this would remove the apps:

the -r switch will make it recursive, but since we're not doing it to directory, we don't need it ... i was gunna add some more to the script to remove the data/data/ directories for each of those apps up there, but i gotta look to see what they are first

yup just gotta be careful with removing an app that could be dependent on another app

Is there anything stopping me from combining both into one shell script? I was going to make a script to do this myself because I am so sick of that damn teeter app! I will never play it and almost every ROM has it included.

go ahead and combine them .. it should still work as long as you dont interleave the 2
also, the 2nd script doesnt need that mount command since we are messing with /data/ instead of /system/

I hand-typed the commands in console and received this error:
"mount: mounting /dev/block/mtdblock3 on /system failed: Invalid Argument
Any ideas?

you dd a typo check again look between (mtdblock3 /system) you wrote (mtdblock3 on /system) <~~~ no good
this is:

ok now that i got my phon working again i was having a SPL problem all done now thank god lol yes thank god i love my phone. anyways one question were do i put this script at??
also foundout MMS is save to remove and use a replacement app and you will work fine for those who use chop or handcent app

a noob question... how do you run a script? and what do you mean by removing .txt extension...

Save his file to your SD card, and rename it to RemoveApp.sh instead of RemoveApp.sh.txt. To run it, you can go into Terminal Emulator and type "sh /sdcard/RemoveApp.sh", substituting the correct file path where you have saved the script.

[SOLVED]Fix_permissions wont run on latest super D

so thats what i get when i try to run fix permissions from terminal.

i tried replacing the system/bin/fix_p.. with one from cyans rom using rootexplorer.apk but the i get permissions denied when i try to run fix_p.. in terminal.
Also mount -w doesn't work.
installed the room after full wipe n even repartitioned my sd.
im not the only one with that problem too

You are supposed to run it in recovery. Just select the option there.

Are you doing it through Terminal or ADB?
And make sure your phone is not mounted. If it is (since you had to put the fix_permissions on the sdcard), unmount it.

terminal i jsut reinstalled windows 7 havent had time to set up adb but yeah i know ty man im gonna try in a min.

On topic: I was under the impression that fix_permissions was made to run in recovery. You make it seem like it's a chore to reboot and run it the proper way.

its at the root of sd n sd is unmounted

Are you sure that it's correctly named as "fix_permissions" on the root folder of the SD card?

To be honest, I'm a nice guy, but when threads get filled with utter "OMG, How do I root?" posts, I get pissed off. I don't mean to backseat moderate or anything, I just really get fed up sometimes. Hence, I've broken out the hardcore side of myself, and I present:

Easy to understand, plain english guide
Download the ZIP file attached to this post. Extract the files to a safe location - perhaps C:\Tattoo ?
Now, you'll need adb for windows. You can get it from my website's server here: ADB for windows.
Make sure your device is in USB Debug Mode (Settings > Applications > Development). This is ESSENTIAL!
Extract all the files in the adb4win zip file to your C:\Tattoo folder.
Now, go to Command Prompt. In XP, it's under System Tools in Accessories. In Vista/7, it'll be under accessories.
Do the following at the command line:
C:\Users\Coburn> cd C:\Tattoo
This will change your working directory from C:\Users\Coburn (or silimar) to C:\Tattoo .
Now, at the command line, do this:
C:\Tattoo> adb-windows shell "mkdir /data/local/bin" (with the quotes!).
This makes a directory on the Tattoo under /data/local, called bin. If you get a error (like mkdir failed, file/folder exists), this is fine! Don't sweat it.
Now, run this command:
C:\Tattoo> adb-windows push m7 /data/local/bin/m7
...and wait until finish.
Run this:
C:\Tattoo> adb-windows shell "cd /data/local/bin && chmod 755 ./m7" (with the quotes!)
This allows you to run the sucker.
Now, the fun part. Run this:
C:\Tattoo> adb-windows shell
This will dump you at a "$" shell. do the following:
C:\Tattoo> adb-windows shell
$ cd /data/local/bin
$ while ./m7 ; do : ; done
...lotsa text will flow down your screen. This is normal. Sometimes the exploit causes adb to freeze up, I don't know. I think it may be due to the exploit. It worked on my mac fine though...
Soon, you'll be greeted with this:

This is the root prompt! If you get stuff like this:
# usage: reboot ...
usage: reboot ....
usage: reboot ...
Just keep your cool, press enter and the # will say "Boo" again. This is due the exploit spawning reboots to gain the shell.
Then, do these commands from this thread's first post:

You can do anything then! Look at /system, /data, etc etc. You're broken free, my friend, and you'll forever be free. Until you press that exit button. you didn't. You didn't press that exit button? lolwut u did? Grrrrrrr!!!
EDIT: Added Guide to remount partitions. It's below.
Now you need to install su. Exit your root shell (via CTRL+C) (NO, Coburn, are you serious? ME LOSE ROOT SHELL?! ) and download this su.zip and extract it to C:\Tattoo. DO NOT EXIT THE COMMAND PROMPT WINDOW.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, in your command prompt window, do this:
C:\Tattoo> adb-windows push su /data/local/bin/su
Then break out a shell...
C:\Tattoo> adb-windows shell
at the $ prompt, enter:
$ chmod 755 /data/local/bin/su
$ cd /data/local/bin/
..run the exploit again via "while 'true' ; do ./m7 ; done" to get root again then enter ...
# chown root.root /data/local/bin/su
# chmod 4755 /data/local/bin/su
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock5 /data
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system (This line allows you to play around with files on the system partition!)
After that, you can exit out of the root shell, and try a normal shell and this:
$ /data/local/bin/su
...which should make you get a nice # prompt. (Sometimes it doesn't, for me it got su: permission denied, wtf?)

Tested on Windows 7. Also works on a phone terminal emulator too!

You could also add an explanation on how to remount the partitions without nosuid, so that a suid su can work.

Problem copying files to system partition after successfull rooting

The device was rooted successfully (from the first time using m7)
But I have very strange problem.
I try to update some files in the /system (updating fonts in /system/fonts).
I successfully run following command to remount system with rw permissions
/system/bin/mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
But when I try to copy files to /system/fonts I get "not enough memory" error.
If I run "df" command it shows that /system has 14% free before write attempt
But if I run "df" command after the write attempt I see that there is no free space.
It looks like there is some protection mechanism that prevents copying files to /system partition.
Does any one has an idea how to solve it?

The problem is well known an jet we have got no explanation. It looks like an additional security system build in by HTC. That is what also prevents us from flashing Custom ROMS at the moment. Development goes on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=631540&page=18 but there is no solution or explanation until now.

Could it be that it seems to be that the driver (yaffs) is possibly trying to copy /system into memory, and then reflash the partition all at once (to prevent NAND/NOR tear and wear)?

this guide is in error and will for sure not work ...
you should post probberly ...specially now when things is working....

Excuse me, but it was tested working. I do not post false or misleading information, so please don't accuse me of posting something that won't work. It does work. If you have troubles, you're not following it correctly. Start again and work one step at a time.

[GUIDE] How to Remove Pre-Installed Apps for FREE

First, you need to install the drivers:

Then you must be rooted:

Next, get the most current SDK:

Extract the zip and put it where it's easiest for you to get to on Command Prompt. I put it in my C:\ for extremely easy access.
Now, open up Command Prompt and put in these commands in order

Titanium backup is easier and less time consuming then messing with ADB and is free.

Eh, not really. ADB is much more resourceful and has alot more uses and options if you learn how to use it. This is only one of it's uses. Titanium Backup is just a waste of space IMO. It is very limited on the free version.

Or you can use SDX App Removal if your interested in only removing the preinstalled apps (must be rooted).

At the expense of sounding like a noob, which I guess I am when it comes to Android, I'm getting a real-only error. I rooted with noobnl and Titanium Backup tells me I'm rooted. What might I be doing wrong?

Try using this as the mount command:
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
Or better yet use one of the GUI options unless you are familiar with linux and save the headache. If all you want to do is remove apps there are far easier methods that are less time consuming. Titanium backup and SDX removal tool are both free.

Hmmm see I got that error too when I first did it, but then I did it again and it worked perfect lol...

Mine is Wildfire, I have some issues:
Can not do this:
mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
or
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
But actual there exists a directory /system/app, in which I can see all the .apk and .odex files. When I tried to delete a file, it says that 'rm failed for File-Name, read-only file system'
What should I do? thanks

Well this is for the Samsung Epic...so i have no idea what you have to do

Now I can mount, to over come the read-only problem, however whenever I delete a file, it says that: rm failed for filename.apk, Directory not empty
You guys have any advice? thanks

hmmmm idk....thats seems really strange. Maybe its something you cant delete

I tried to reboot in HBOOT/Recovery/ Partition Menu, then mount /system. Then I could remove apps in adb shell successfully. can anyone confirm that doing like this is ok?
My wildfire was rooted with unrevoked3

This is confirmed to still work with the DI07 update

My noob question is I am using titanium backup to remove the sprint bloatware like media hub and it looks like the program removes it but when I exit titanium it is still on the phone.

Titanium backup is the mark of the noob in my opinion.

thanks, i had been searching around for the adb commands to mount the system r/w so i could remove the bloat.

SDX Stock App Removal is tops in my opinion.
Quick, simple, and allows for back-ups.
And I also don't think Titanium is the "Mark of the noob". It would be more like the "Mark of the ADB is unnecessary for stock application removal"
Also I don't think this should be in development. And if you know ABD commands you should know that.

This thread is okay....but sdx..and root uninstaller are awsome. Thanks for this guide though my friend very useful info for those that want to experiment with adb....
