What ROM is the fastest? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently using Cyanogen 3.9.9.10 with apps to sd and a 32mb swap partition. My SdCsrd is not class 6 and i think it is slowing down my phone.
what rom is simply the fastest using just a straight fat32 partitioned sdcard?

i think you should at least use a class 6 sdcard if you are using a swap partition from your sd. that's if you want speed.
oh and the title of this is misleading...

I'd recommend Maxishma's ROMs. They are blazingly fast, however you need 3 partitions on your MicroSD card...

I use a class 4 with Linux-swap on a Hero ROM, runs pretty fast, but if you want top-knotch speed than try the different Cupcake ROMs.

I ordered a class 6
can always use more memory i suppose

if you want speed then steer away from hero roms. Cupcake based ones are more snappy.

ext2/3 and stock sd card

is it even worth it ro run an ext 2/3 setup with app2sd on a stock g1 sd card?
it would let you have apps on the sd instead of the phone and free phone memory but stock SDcard slower than a class 4 or class 6 sdcard

yeah of course you should run it my friend has had nothing but a stock 2gb and he has had no problems plus upgrading to ext4 always helps see sdparted for help on that
hope this helps
perfect, thanks.

All Hero Roms slow on myTouch3G

All Hero roms I've tried on my myTouch3G (32B) have been pretty much unusable because they were so slow. I have a class 4 SD card. Right now I want to flash this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574526). Does anybody know how I should format my SD card or anything I could do to make it run as fast as possible?
It's best to use a class 6 card with either a decent compcache setup or a 64mb swap partition. Please keep in mind that the Hero has 96mb more ram than the 32 Magic, so don't expect too much.
did you partition your sd card to have fat32, ext, and at least 96MB of linux swap? You should also try running a class 6 card. I also recommend you looking in the sapphire forums because there are a lot more ROM's for the mytouch there. I recommend Qtek's 1.8 I have not yet tried the Hero ROM you are trying to run, but I will soon because I like CC's work. Hope this helps

Mate, i've tried loads of Hero roms and they just do not bring enough to the table to warrent the slow speed.
Get on Cyanogen and you'll soon forget about Hero... I did.
Agreed. Not to mention all the fun themes folks are making for cm! I think I may delve into themes myself

Stock 1GB MicroSD Class?

Hi everybody, I just rooted my phone to Cyanogen's 4.2.4 after a long hiatus of being.. a well, non-root user (had to unroot to get a fresh G1 from T-Mobile!)
Anyways, I'm contemplating using app2sd and creating another partition, but Cyanogen clearly states to use nothing less than a Class 4 SD card.
In that case, is the stock 1gb microsd card safe to use (my G1 came with a Sandisk 1GB)?
You can try using it but if its not stable you should revert. Stock is a Class 2 card
it works just fine trust me
been running apps2sd in cyan roms for months now with stock sdcard.
although if u plan on running games you might wanna get a faster card but for apps its good enough

The speed is affected by mostly the class of the card. If your card is class 2, it means, that the minimum writing speed is 2Mb/s. You can have any of the partitions you want, but the speed is derived by the SD Class. (Ext2 is fast, Ext4 is safer, but slower, i don't use ext3, fat32 is medium in every aspect, but has drawbacks (max. 1gig files)).
if you are using custom rom...just dont create any extra partition...
i use the native way..well most of custom roms support this, i suppose

so i am using ext3 partition 300 mb..is it recommended?
i am using link2sd in 2.1
first i create ext3 then at application linking time my phone hand
than i create ext2 my phone work fine
my card is class 4 8gb
thkss
I use ext4 personally. I've heard horror reports of ext2 partition corruption and having to format and lose data. Basically, speed-wise
1st: Ext2
2nd: Ext3 and/or Ext4 (I think)
Fat32 --->?
Ext2 gives you best speed but is less safe than Ext3 and/or Ext4, Ext3 is a middle ground, Ext4 is quite safe but is slower than Ext2. I got a 1137 highscore in I/O in quadrant advanced, you get higher scores with Ext2 I think...
Fat32 is default
P.S. I'm using GingerDX so you might want to base the speed of Ext2 using GingerDX.

You may want to upgrade to Ext4. It has some better aspects but parted can't resize it . I use 512 MB Ext4 partition on my default 8GB sd card found in the box (obtained during promotion) and things still run fast. It's your choice.

I'm not sure if mine is class 2 (dumb sandisk didn't put symbol there), I think it might be. My write speed (as measured using SD Tools) is about 13 MB/s and read speed is about 20+ MB/s. If mine is class 2, then it doesn't appear to slow the phone down. But I don't think mine is class 2 and I have heard reports that data2sd on class 2 sd card lags the entire phone down like sh!t.

I think yours is class 10....because those classes are classified as
Class 2= 2MB/s
Class 4=4MB/s
Class 6=6MB/s
Class 10=10MB/s
How do i check am i using data2sd ?...
open root explorer or a similar app that can access /system files. Go to the root directory. Then, open /sd-ext. If there are folders inside you probably are using data2sd.
Note: data2sd is moving /data/app and some other stuff to /sd-ext. I think sometimes it is called a2sd or app2sd. I also use dalvik2sd .

Well, first thing you do is make sure that your app that is testing the write speed is not on fat32 app2sd (on fat32 partition of sd card), move it to phone memory and recheck the write speed.
As long as you feel that there isn't really much (or any) lag at all while using a2sd, then yes it is fine to use a2sd even on a class 2 sd card.
Note: Lag can occur when using incorrect settings in smartass module or having very little ram, even when not using a2sd.

Basically, as long as you feel that the current lag (if any) is fine, then you can use a2sd all you want.
To test write speed properly, move your app that tests write speed to the phone and then retest.

Okok...i think is not quite lag..just sometimes delay..is it normal?..=D

Sd-ext worth it?

I just got a new sandisk ultra 16GB class 10 sd card. Is it actually worth partitioning my SD card for swap and increasing internal storage. I hear that the SD card gets corrupted after about 6 months of use after partitioning.
Thanks

Noway it doesn't affect the sd card...maybe swap does coz the card is always getting accessed...and moreover even swap will reduce life only to an extent that you won't even realise it in your period of use...and mostly all memory cards these days have a full 5year warranty...I have the same card..I've used partition wizard tool and created a 512mb ext4 partition and a 128mb Linux swap....and am using psn swapall cm7 kernel with vo1s rom amazingly smooth!!
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda app-developers app
Totally worth it
I use stock XWKTS PSN rom with PSN kernel and i have 480mb internal storage and my phone flies
Sent from my GT-S5830
Absolutely. I use link2sd. Wouldn't cope without it.
Sent from my GT-S5830
Thanks guys, guess I'm partitioning the SD card
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
which method its better, i have a class 10 sd, as for me i dont find difference between psn mod, cronmod and links2sd?
I'm currently using psn swapp all v3, since swap its on internals i think its faster but all other methods work just fine.
Totally worth it!!!!
EXT partition is recommended however SWAP is a bit optional thing, its a much more strain on the card's life.
I use cronmod, its gui free, i like it, does everything by itself in the background, no hassles with setting up link2sd or app2sd.
Yeah absolutely worth it. I wouldnt be able to live without it now.
The ability to install loads of apps is amazing.
You will face an issue with corruption only if the card was of bad quality to begin with.
