recovery image and partitioning sd card help. - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the g1 and am running cyanogen 3.9.10 and I want to add a new recovery image but i cant figure how to "install" it using run commands... i tried home+End and i get to the exclamation point in the triangle thing, then i try to press alt+x and nothing happens.
Also I want to take advantage of the Apps2sd feature in the 3.9.10 version and i dont know how to partition my sd... i dont even know what the difference between the extensions is.
Please help it would be greatly appreciated!

the thread for cyangen's recovery 1.4 should explain how to install the recovery image.
lucidrem has and guide/tutorial on how to split partition your sd and whatnot.
look in the helpful threads link to find what you are looking for.
ext3 is good for a2sd

Put the recovery image on the root of your sdcard go to terminal, type flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery1.4.img or whatever the exact name of your recovery image is. The search for "partitioning from recovery" and follow whichever thread you click on to use parted via recovery console. Sorry would post link but on g1 at work.

Can i still downgrade and root and go to CM ROM
Yes you can. Just follow the normal steps on how to downgrade (you can find such information in the FAQ section in my signature, namely the How To Root, flash and hack bit.). All the informaiton should be there along with links to the firmware version you need to downgrade to and all the other steps required.
1 more question
Can i use this tut

Yes, its a well written tutorial. My advice is to read it first so you become comfortable with what you're doing and then follow the steps.
If that's still confusing then try this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
wow seems like a lot of work to root the phone but it will work

This tut should work fine except I dont think you need to do this.
"How to install custom ROM (With full wipe)
Download your favorite flavor of rom (I prefer JACHero http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=522076) and rename to update.zip
1.) Turn on the phone holding the home key and power to boot. Attach the phone to your computer via usb.
2.) Wipe your phone from the menu in cyanogen
3.) Open console and enter the following commands. Press "Enter" after each line. This wipes the ext partition.
mount -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
rm -r /system/sd/*
4.) Mount the phone so you can copy update.zip over easily by entering the following commands. Press "Enter" after each line.
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
5.) Type recovery to go back to the recovery menu."
6.) Apply the update.zip file then reboot the phone.
maybe thats for the purpose of putting on the hero based roms. I dont remember having to ever do that step .
Yeah, silly me I guessed the first link was the guide I was thinking of!
Also don't forget guys that if you are planning to use a newer ROM, do upgrade your Radio first. As an option you can upgrade your SPL too to either the HardSPL or the very latest version which is on my signature.
Beware though that before flashing the latest SPL you must ideally have a PVT motherboard (simply turn off mobile, hold CAMERA+POWER to get into the SPL. The text at the top will list the model number) and you MUST FLASH THE LATEST RADIO FIRST.
Can't stress that enough really
So after doing the steps before that just dont do them and go straight to CM's Rom
And can someone give me a dirct link to the current CM ROm i dont want to dl the wrong one thanxs for whoever does so

All that would be under the pretext that you have the latest SPL and have flashed Cyanogen's recovery image. Also the pretext that you want the Hero ROM too.
There are many methods for achieving the same goal. For the more savvy amongst us, ADB is all that's needed and a few commands. For the newbies, its best to keep things simple.
K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) is a wonderful rule of thumb for many things in life ^_^
i'd use the second tut to get root

Follow the steps there. If you wanted Cyanogen's latest ROM as you've stated, simply go to the very first post of his thread. Its all there.

Also you only need to partition your SD card if you plan on doing Apps2SD. If you don't have a need for it then don't worry about partitioning your SD card. If you are planning to use Apps2SD then I would strongly suggest at least a Class 6 SD Card.
well im planning on using apps2sd and i do have a class 6 sdhc card

ok there are like 30 different tuts to get root all do the same thing just different ways you have to choose the one that you would feel most comfortable with cause if you choose one that's not right for you and try to flash some of the newer roms you have a good chance to brick your phone. so spend a week read as many tuts as you can it's not a race to get root take your time.
Partition Manager has a fully functional demo that lasts for 30 days. Google it to download, install and partition your SD card. Remember FAT32 partition first, then EXT2 or EXT3 partition second. Also I would advise for the EXT partition not to exceed 1GB, as to be honest you won't be using all of it.

Root issue- driver install problem?

Okay so i've been at this some time, following
Guide to root Rogers G1's
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532419
now my phone is currently stuck at the rogers screen with the fastboot usb at the top left corner, and i've uninstalled the drivers and re-installed, and when i do the cmd for adb devices
it shows
List of devices attached
^ nothing.
am i installing the driver wrong? its showing on the usb as Android 1.0 after i go and select the x86 driver, currently running windows 7 . If you could please post some help i've been reading since yesterday and can't seem to get passed this issue
i beleieve the main issue would be me not being able to access my sd card, anyway to push a file through onto it somehow via cmd adb ? if so, tips would be great , my sdk is in c:\android\sdk-windows\tools and i have it up and running in cmd. Please help .
Update: i was just able to
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
and boot into "Android system recovery<2>
[Home+back] Reboot System now

[alt+w]wipe data/factory reset
[alt+b]nandroid v2.2 backup
[alt+r]restore latest backup
[alt+f] erpair ext filesystems

now i know the only file on my sd card is the spl renamed to "update.zip"
no rom on it , so how do i get the rom on it from this point? any help would be great, leaving it at this screen until further notice from boards.
also note, bottom of screen says
"Build: CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF
Formatting CACHE:...
Nothing moving
PLEASE Help :'(

There is only the spl on my sd card root (update.zip) and no rom at all, nothing else.

ok you have The Cyan 1.4 recovery installed right? and apparently your at fastboot after you have flashed the spl or whatever so press the end, menu and talk buttons to get out of fastboot. or just remove the battery doesent matter lol . But before you do that check the spl and make shure its 1.33.2005 to make shure your safe. once you turn the device back on hold the power and home button then recovery should come up. if you have cyan 1.4 recovery you should have a picture of the little android guy in the background lol and if so go all the way down until it says go to console. or just do alt+x. then once your in that screen then press enter once.
once you press enter the screen should have this up #
if so then just type ums_enable then press enter. it should look like this
# ums_enable
wait for a brief second and wallah your sd will mount to your comp. then flash whatever rom you had on before

I haven't fixed it yet. Am not able to place the recovery image using fastboot - my phone is not recognized by the computer
Work around I've found for flashing the recovery image if you can't figure out fastboot (I've never got it to work) is like this:
1. Follow the root procedure.
2. Install the most recent CM rom without using the HTC image (reason I do this is he's got some linux commands built into his ROM that aren't installed in the vanilla android build).
3. Download the cm-recovery-1.4.img to your sd card (or whichever recovery image you like)
4. Run terminal commands like so:
$su root (the reason I do this is it gives you higher level access to the system than just su, and I've found it doesn't work with just su for some reason)
#flash recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img
#reboot
5. Hold your home key as it powers up, and you should have the new recovery image installed.
Of course, I'd say do a full wipe, then install the ROM, and go through the fix permissions and clear cache.

You won't be able to use terminal from recovery until you have a thirdparty recovery image installed. The steps I've listed are for a working phone, and I'm sure that's where part of your problem is. I'd suggest doing a wipe (Alt+W) and going through the root process again. When you get the CM Rom, change the name of it to update.zip, then try the steps I mentioned. I'd suggest having a separate SD card with just DREAMIMG.nbh installed on it for emergencies (especially if you're going to partition your main card).
Thanks

Basically to get this working you're going to need to downgrade to RC29 first - so follow the root instructions.
CM = CyanogenMod ROM. To get his working fully you need two roms, which are the HTC Developer ROM and the 4.x ROMs he created (reason being legal distribution of software), but for my instructions, on his ROM page, you're going to skip his instructions, just download his ROM, rename it to update.zip and just flash it from the stock recovery, just so you can get to the terminal once the phone boots up and load terminal (it's in the programs tray). When another screen pops up asking if you want to allow it to use SU functions (it will as soon as you type "su") hit allow.
Terminal is a program downloadable from the Market, it's included with the CM ROM.
His instructions for install are not going to work unless you have a thirdparty recovery image, which at this point from the description, the triangle with the exclamation point is the default system recovery image.
CM Rom page
You should be able to find the Root posts and choose a customed recovery image, there's about 4 or 5 really good ones, I use Cyanogen's, thus my instructions on how to flash it.
You're fortunate that you're getting to the stock recovery, means your phone isn't bricked.

Not sure what you mean? Telnet for these intents and purposes is basically just a command. The page on how to root has become pretty convoluted at this point. The part where it tells you to type 'telnetd' is just running a script which is an exploit in the old releases of android. You won't be messing with Terminal really until you get to the point where you've updated the rom. From this point, I'd suggest downloading this root.apk from your browser, install it, allow it, follow the instructions step by step in the program.
My problem consist of that i can't turn on my phone and i can't get into bootloader...only recovery can you give me a link for RC29 download and then install it from recovery on my g1 from recovery.

You don't...with the DREAMIMG.nbh or any .nbh file you start up the phone holding power+camera. The recovery mode looks for an update.img file. You'll make it through, don't get frustrated.
Here's a more updated rooting guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=553416

Just loaded Cyano ROM (newest), reboot is taking too long.

Hello!
I followed this guide and read the comments of everyone, and it's a reliable guide to rooting and installing a new ROM. The rooting went perfect, so I decided to go further and load cyanogen's latest ROM.
Power off your phone.
Boot into recovery mode. (Press and hold the Home key, then hit the power button).
Before you flash a rom file, perform a wipe. Press Alt+W to wipe the data and cache folders. You must wipe when going form different builds of Android.
Wait for the wipe to finish and the recovery image to display again, then select “apply any zip from sd”. Flash the zip file of your choice.
After flashing any zip you should be able to reboot your system and watch it load to the home screen.
After changing Android builds, it came take several minutes for the first boot. If you phone hangs on the animated Android logo, this is because you did not perform a wipe. If you are stuck in a boot loop, return to the recovery image and make sure you wipe.

-Taken from the guide
At the first time I rebooted it took me back to recovery, so using logic I rebooted again and now it is stuck at the T-Mobile G1 screen (the one before it normally shows the android)...
I know it's supposed to take several minutes.. but 30minutes is ridiculous -.-"
Can somebody please help me out before I do something stupid and remove the battery? Thanks so much..
You need to read a bit more then, because you would have learned that you have to install the 1.6ADP fro Htc before installing a cyanogen rom, that is one of the things you would know if you followed the guide in his thread...

You have to listen to cyanogen plus that might be a different rom like enom or something.Cyanogen has a different maybe tricky install method.
You need to goto his thread.
-Go to http://developer.htc.com/adp.html
-DL the 1.6 "recovery image" the file name is - signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip
-Then DL CyanogenMod-XXXX
-put them both on your SD card
-Boot up into Amon_RA recovery by rebooting and holding the home button, do a wipe.
-update using any zip to that "recovery image" (signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip)
(it should auto reboot install radio then reboot again and load back up to the CMrecovery img screen)
-Then update any zip usig CyanogenMod (update-cm-xxxx-signed.zip)
-Then reboot the phone
Thanks a lot man.
I found the 1.6 ADP file and I have it downloaded onto my computer. Is there anyway I can put this on my SD card? It won't let me.. :/ If I could somehow get this on there, run it.. and THEN run the cyanogenrom.zip I think it could work again?
You need to delete the partitions with console while in recovery mode.
1.console
3.parted dev/block/mmcblk0
4.print
rm 1
rm 2
rm 3
quit
reboot recovery
Dont rename any of the files just leave them.
Now try it on your pc.

Thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.
I took your advice and did those steps and it rebooted me into recovery like you commanded. I plugged it via USB into my computer hoping that the computer would recognize it and let me put the file on the SD card - but to no avail.
What is the next step I can take?

I loaded the radio first...
and then I loaded the SPL...
and then I loaded the ROM...
I didn't go out of order. Was the problem that I didn't have the 1.6 ADP on my SD?
@Ace42: If I get a card reader and add the 1.6 ADP (signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip) to my sd card.... and load it. Can you tell me what to do from there?
Do I load that zip and then reload the ROM?
You may want to try Dwang1.13 rom. I don't think his rom requires the extra step to get the google apps.

[Q] Install ROM without SD Card

Ok so the SD card slot on my phone is toast. Is it possible to install a rom thru the USB cable without using the SD card? =/
Hmm... Ok I have two ideas that i'll quickly check out. One of which will require you to wipe your data/factory reset in recovery, the other if I did get it to work wouldn't require any wiping unless you wanted to.
I'll try 'em both out and tell you if I have any luck doing so
Alright, so here we go..
Results
First idea without having to wipe: no go
Second idea with wiping: WORKS
After doing some digging around the AmonRA github to look for the commands it actually performs while in recovery I figured out exactly how to do what I wanted.
(namely THIS PAGE for those of you who are interested in seeing the exact page I found them on)
How to Flash a ROM Without an SD Card
Prerequisites:
Flash an Amon_RA recovery if you're using Clockwork - I recommend Darch's unofficial (refer to my signature if you need it)
Access to a computer that had AndroidSDK tools on it - you'll be using ADB
Put whichever ROM.zip you want to flash in your android-sdk\tools folder - I would rename it to something simple. (My example which I'll be using for this tut is: C:\AndroidSDK\toosl\kyoukoROM.zip)
Directions:
Reboot into the Amon_RA recovery
Wipe data/factory reset, cache, and dalvik via the recovery menu
Open up cmd/terminal on your computer
Navigate to your android-sdk\tools directory
Enter the following in cmd/terminal:
Code:
adb shell
mount data
*wait a second or two* You may or may not get the "/ #" line returned.
Despite what happens press "Ctrl+C" to break the command and get back to the standard AndroidSDK\tools> directory
Enter the following in cmd/terminal:
(replace "kyoukoROM.zip" with the name you're using)
Code:
adb push ./kyoukoROM.zip /data/
*this will take anywhere from 30sec to a min depending on the rom.zip size*
Then we do this in cmd:
Code:
adb shell
recovery --update_package=DATA:mau5.zip
Wait for it to finish flashing/updating
Reboot
ENJOY
If someone thinks I should post this in the development section as a [GUIDE] let me know and I'll post it there too

Post it! This would be a HUGE help to people
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Great work Kyouko! If not to the dev forum, atleast post it to the wiki.
BTW, you should post it to Android forums, as well... if I am not wrong, this will work with any phone.

Good idea, hopefully it'll help a lot more people there. I'll post it there and change up a couple things (the darch recovery part)
And idk how to edit the wiki
Amazing response! I will have to give this a try thank you!!! I still have a month left before my upgrade and I wanted to be able to change my ROM. Thanks again!
FYI Rom Manager will not flash a clockwork recovery without an SD card, gives an error... looking into other ways to flash a recovery...
