Bluetooth Headphones - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am thinking of buying bluetooth headphones because my wires constantly tangling and eventually ripping or breaking is really pissing me off
so i what i want to know is:
How good is the sound quality (this matters to an extent)
does it cut out a lot (if yes is there a fix)
how much does it affect the g1 battery life
thanks i advance

I don't know how much of it is introduced by the MP3 decoding software, the A2DP link, and my A2DP headset, but I do notice a slightly higher noise floor listening to MP3s on G1 as compared to on my computer. It is mainly noticeable during the period between when the headset initializes a stream and when audio actually begins to play. Quiet portions of songs and musical pieces with high dynamic range (classical, mainly) also will suffer disproportionately. If you don't listen to music with high dynamic ranges or significant quiet parts, then the noise floor will likely be imperceptible.
On drop outs: Since BT operates in the ISM frequency, if you live/work in a place with heavy WiFi usage (an apartment complex, an office park) you may notice frequent drop out. In extremely WiFi noisy areas, it can be at the point where it's unusable. The other reason for drop outs (more uncommon) results from the phone hitting the limit of its processing power and being unable to decode the MP3 in realtime. You will notice that while using A2DP music playback, the phone will act more sluggishly, especially for realtime applications like games. I encode my MP3s as LAME -V0, and at this setting the G1 requires 8% CPU to decode. However, playback of the same material over A2DP increases CPU usage to ~30%. The reason for the additional 22% is due to re-encoding to SBC for A2DP. I recommend not running a Rosie/Sense UI with A2DP.
Battery life will also take a nice hit too. In addition to that extra 22% CPU time (meaning more battery consumption), the phone will have to run its BT radio nonstop. I haven't run any battery life comparisons myself, but expect the usable battery life to drop considerably with A2DP playback as opposed to using the wired headset.

I dont live in a wifi heavy area (or any where near one) and dont use the phone for much except browsing while listening to music i guess ill have to go to a cyan rom now(ill just use a hero theme ) Thanks for the great answer

I've had lots of issues with different stereo bt headphones, I think the problem is mostly on the headphones side. Flaky playback, audio actually changes speeds while listening to songs, audio cuts out periodically, can't forward to rev to other songs. I've had all these issues and more on my G1, and a Samsung P2 and P3, so I'm blaming the headsets.

I thought I was going crazy when I first heard this, but apparently its a problem with a lot of a2dp setups. In a way pitch changes are more irritating than drop outs since atleast most of the time it's pretty clear when you have a drop out.

I have an LB HBS 200 headset (I think that's the name). Talking quality is the same as any other bluetooth headset I have ever owned. Kinda choppy. However, that is not the case for the music part. The music sounds great and I have never had trouble with it. Best off, it's only $25 at Fry's Electronics! The next closest one I saw was a motorola for $50. You should look into it. I highly recommend it.

Any Pandora users running Froyo

I have noticed that when I use Pandora on Froyo the audio quality is significantly worse than it was on stock 2.1 or cyanogenmod 5.0.7.1.
I am aware of the High and Normal settings in the preferences however it does not help.
Under 2.1 (stock and cyan) Normal would sound alright and High would sound fantastic.
Under 2.2 (froyo) High sounds bad and normal is horrible.
Has anyone else noticed the sound quality drop in pandora moving to Froyo?
This is independent of the song being streamed and is very noticeable when using good headphones.
Are you using the stock 2.2 kernel or one with the audioboost patch?
I have tried using multiple kernels including stock, cyan 2.6.34 and ravens avs 2.6.33.4 kernels. Does not effect the problem at all.
I'm running Paul's pre-root (including 4.06 radio and kernel that came with it) and sounds great to me, same as before (CM 5.0.6+oc/uv+audio mod+desire cam). In fact I'm not sure if I've reset it to stay on High with 3g yet since I updated. (Tmo USA N1 if it makes a difference ).
Wish I could give helpful input other than its possible. I know I wiped everything I could and flashed it over CM.
Running Paul's root with IntersectRaven's .34 kernel and Pandora sounds as good as it did with his kernel on CM5.0.6.
Haven't noticed a difference.

same here.
Hmmm, I will look into this more and report back if I find anything.
Thanks for the help guys.
I as well noticed this problem, tried resting/full wipe, restarting, toggling settings to no results. Terrible audio quality even in high. Other sounds are not affected it seems. Running kernel that the update brought.
Am I the only that has actually plugged the phone into an fm transmitter to use with my car stereo? Of course i am, you kids all have your bluetooth radios and your xms and syriusnessess. When using Pandora, the bass is much much louder in froyo than it was in all previous roms. Kernel with modded sound or not, the bass is big. So, yes, the sound is very different from what it used to be. Mids are too high and highs are meh... nonexistent. It doesn't sound bad on the phone or through earbuds, but unless you like rap, you probably won't like the sound coming through your car. But, I don't think that's anything some decent equilizer software can't fix. Personally, I think the sound is an improvement despite the focus on the lower end of the spectrum. In previous versions, it was to light and airy with no lowend.

I am on Froyo, and I notice it.
Also, I notice that songs frequently stop playing in the middle or near the end, and then Pandora seems to fail to recover and skips to the next song. Does that happen for you?

The same thing happens to me while on 3G, and happens mostly while moving. If I stay still, I can play continuously with no problems. But while walking or driving, I usually can't finish a song before it skips. This also happens on any other internet radio app, like DroidLive and Slacker.

Yes, I've noted that, as well as fairly frequent brief pauses that do resume and continue to play the current song without skipping to the next. (The combination of my ears and my stereo system are not sufficiently discriminating for me to detect any difference in the audio quality, though.)
I've noticed that I can't control the next song, play/pause with the Bluetooth controls anymore. I hit next to skip a song and my music player starts playing while Pandora is still playing.
I use Pandora often in my car and I also can confirm the audio quality is now horrible for me on Froyo.
If I nandroid back to my CM backup it sounds fine but under Froyo it sounds horrible.
I also have noticed a decrease in audio quality, but that might be due to changing ROMs from CM to Stock Froyo leak... (don't really know how the builds differer audio wise)
@ maxawesome
I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing problems with Pandora. Often my music just stops... sometimes it won't continue streaming either... It worked flawlessly with CM 5.0.6 (though i only use it in my car...)
I am also confirming that after the Paul's Froyo zip update the audio quality has decreased dramatically. It almost seems like the sample rate is much lower affecting mostly higher frequency sounds like voice or instruments that produce higher frequencies. The bass sounds ok, but there is alway a small hiss noticable.
Also, when my screen turns off while Pandora is playing I noticed audio drop out over the BT connection. When I force the screen on this does not seem to occur.
Had the desire rom on it before and audio was stunning, almost CD quality.
Hope someone finds a fix or workaround soon.

Agreed, happy to know I am not alone with the issue. For now I have reverted to Cyan 5.0.7.1.
i don't know about pandora, but the stock music app sounds a ton better to me, both through headphones and through my car speakers (using the POS 3.5mm to tape adapter, lol)
The other day I plugged my N1 to my car and noticed the quality was a lot worse. At first I didn't think much about it or even the fact that it was because of Froyo until I came upon this thread. But yeah, the quality is a lot worse now. I am thinking Pandora needs a update.

[Q] Hiss / Static in headphones on Nook Color

Alternate title: Why does my new eReader not make a great audio player too?
So, I went out and bought a Nook Color on Friday. I bought it for the Android hacking fun and doubt that I'll ever use it for its B&N "intended purpose". With that being said, I've noted that there is a hiss / static in the headphones any time the audio is enabled. There appears to be some self-muting going on on the device itself almost as if it is completely disabling the bias to the audio output transistors after some seconds wherein the hiss goes away but, any time there is active sound going on, the hiss and associated noise (likely RFI getting into poorly designed/shielded audio circuitry) is very clearly and annoyingly there.
I'm using very good headphones (Bose QC-3's) which sound wonderful on everything else I plug them into including my Droid and Milestone phones.
Has anyone else noted this very annoying audio issue on the NC? If I don't figure out some way to get rid of it, it's going to put a serious damper on using the NC to watch videos when I fly. (LONG trans-oceanic flights!)
I noticed a slight static noise from the built in speaker on my NC. I've not listened that much with headphones - and it was in a noisy environment.

Usually portable audio front ends include a mute circuit to suppress the pop when the power for the amp turns on and off to save power. But that's besides the point...
My ATH-M50s give a lot of hiss when plugged into the NC, and at 38 ohms are somewhat less sensitive than most cheapie headphones that these amps are usually designed to. When I get a chance I'll try some higher impedance phones.

Might be worth taking your headphones into a B&N store and trying another NC out to confirm its not just an issue with your unit.
Have the same issue with the NC and bose QC3 head phones. Plugged in a cheap pair of ear buds from the airlines and no hiss.
The amp is definitely noisy-- the worst I've heard since my 1st Gen iPhone. I guess they had to skimp somewhere.
Yes, pretty hissy sound. I can live with it, I think, but it's bit disappointing.
Ditto. The hiss using my Ultimate Ears makes the Nook Color unusable for audio or video in a quiet or normal environment.
It might work on a plane where the ambient noise is so high.
Pretty loud hissing sound with both apple earbuds and image s4's.
I noticed this too the first time I used Pandora...
Typically, for me and I assume it's the same for most pepole...
A reader likes to read in a quiet environment and therefore when they do decided they want to use the audio on their nook it is for music at a lower volume in a quiet setting. So this static / auto shutoff problem is blaringly obvious.
Any chance this will/could be fixed with an update?
If not then the audio feature will be useless for me
*edit*
Also... the static only gets worse (louder) as you up the volume. So listening to the music at a higher volume doesnt mask the static it only makes it worse
I have the same noisy audio. I am very serious about my audio equipment, but I don't put the NC in that category. Yeah, it would be nice if it sounded great, but the hiss would not bother me for video & I prefer to listen to a quality MP3 player if I listen to music. I would actually rather make adjustments to a dedicated player, while reading, than use my ereader to change screens & make adjustments. The other factor is the impact on the battery life. I guess maybe not a big deal on the NC?, but surely with an eInk reader. I hope you can find a way to live happily with yours.
Cheers,
kev
Ditto for me too. Hiss makes Pandora unusable when using my ultimate ears. I'm definitely disappointed, and a little less eager for flash support now.

I think there might just be inconsistency in the NCs, neither mine nor my brothers have this audio hissing problem, or the problems with the bezel/frame, or any of the other problems the have come up on the forums. Maybe they are being built at multiple factories and some just suck? or maybe they just don't do any quality control? Who knows, I would check out the NCs with other headphones (although it sounds like you use these headphones all the time, so it's unlikely that they are the problem) and your headphones with other NCs.
OMG... the nook color sucks at playing music when using the Panasonic RP-HC700 Noise Cancelling headphones. The static is almost unbearable. I posted a recording of it on youtube under the user name MilkManMOM. (I can't post links and be helpful yet) Grrrr...I'm angry now at B&N.
No audio hiss from headphones on mine. If yours does, it's defective. It's also still under warranty. Stop just complaining to us about it and have B&N fix it.

Try a different set of headphones. My Bose IE2s are fine, but my Senhiessers have a lot of hiss, especially when I use an inline amp.
My quick test leads me to belive that earbuds meant for mp3 players work fine, but head phones have issues. This might be an impedence issue.

Its either a Impedance issue or Frequency issue. When using my good Sony Headphones which are Frequency Response : 5-24,000Hz I get a Ton of Hiss, but when I'm using my Crappy Work Speakers which are Dell 215, which has a Frequency Response of 100 - 20000 Hz I get No hiss at all.
I have not tried the Official Nook head phones but they are Frequency response: 20 Hz-18,000 Hz
My guess is that our Head phones are just too good for the Nook and we are hearing the Hiss in the Higher Frequency Range that "Normal" Headphones often can't reproduce. I have had the same issue with cheaper MP3 players you end up hearing the electronics in the device working. Good MP3 players and other media device normally have this sound filtered out or have things shielded in such a way that it minimized the effect.

Ummm, no. First, anything above 20kHz is inaudible. Second, if you do have extraordinarily rare "miracle ears" and can hear slightly above the normal range, nothing above 20kHz would sound like a hiss... it would be an incredibly high-pitched whistle. Try playing around with a tone generator and see for yourself what extreme high-frequency sounds are like.
Oh, and I assure you that your Sony headphones cannot produce 5Hz and 24kHz tones, no matter what their marketing department claims.

[Q] Increase Soung Output Through Head Phone Jack? Stock Rooted

I am loving my Nook Color. Using it to replace a laptop and books I take with me on plane trips for movies and reading.
I am running 1.1 Stock and Auto Nootered. I have my file re-encoded for playing on the Nook and they look great. Problem is with sound all the way up and using my noise canceling headphones, the sound is not quite as loud as I would like.
Is there a way to increase the sound output to the head phone jack?

See this is an entirely different science.
Often, both noise canceling headphones and high quality headphones require a certain about of ohm's to power them. Many people even use headphone amplifiers to amplifier the amount of ohms the headphones recieve, which in turn boosts the volume.
Most players(like ipod) have artificial amplifiers built into the DAP(digital audio processor)
The Nook was made as an ereader. it doesn't have a powerful DAP. On some phones they have a dedicated headphone/headset amp which you can crank up.
The nook doesn't.
Therefore, the sound is quiter on these headphones.

Thanks for the great feedback! So it seems like something like http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2732095 should work well? I need local-ish as I am heading on a plane Saturday.
I was suffering the same problem. I could barely hear my NC when playing a movie while on the treadmill at my local gym. I bought a tiny little amp about the size of an iPod nano (Amazon for about $20). It turns out that it doesn't bump the volume up all that much. It's enough for my needs, but would not be enough for a plane trip. The little Radio Shack amp you linked to should work. As long as it you only turn it up to say, 5 or 6 (out of an assumed 10), and it's VERY LOUD (while sitting on your couch), that should give you sufficient headroom for a plane trip.
I recall reading a thread at this site about a kernel that would allow you to bump up the native volume. There's been sooo many kernels and updates that I can't recall which one did the trick...

Sound ahead of video

Has any one else noticed an issue where the sound will be ahead of any video by about half a second? The problem becomes worse when using bluetooth audio. Normally with bluetooth audio the sound lags behind video, but on this phone, with or without bluetooth audio, the sound is always ahead of video.
I notice this most with pocket cast.

Sounds like you have PowerSave on.
Here is why I say this... I can watch videos with no lag. However I don't know about Bluetooth lagging, bc i dont use BT. I know the videos are not lagging, because I read lips everyday since my hearing is quite dull. I can hear the voice and see the word at the same time. Likely, what is happening, is that your internet connection (LTE,WiFi, or 3G if you have good 3G), is downloading and buffering the audio which gets processed via the network interface (no task offloading to the CPU on phones). Now, your video is being processed via the GPU/CPU. So either your voltages are too low, or your frequencies are too low, or you have powersave on which limits you to 1.1Ghz. Perhaps even too much cached data. Flash a new ROM, and then flash ElementalX kernel with 450Mhz GPU, and use 'run hot' as your thermal steps (youll see these options during your flash so dont worry if you dont know what im talking about).
Yes, i have noticed Netflix video sync issues when power save is enabled. It works fine when disabled...

Anyone having Bluetooth Issues in car

I'm using an AT&T variant in a Chevy 2015 Equinox. The phone operates fine with calls but stutters and skips with streaming audio. Any app I use it does the same thing; Poweramp, Google Music, Pandora, etc. My wife's iPhone 6 Plus has no issues whatsoever. Is this a phone issue, an AT&T software issue or car issue? Anyone experience anything like this and can give me some direction? TIA
I had something like that happen before. Doesn't happen much anymore. I wasn't streaming though. Listening to podcast I downloaded. It would play fine for a while but then start to stutter. Would work fine after I woke up the phone so assume it had something to do with the processor dropping down too low like it was trying to go to sleep or just the use the low power cores maybe. Just a guess. Doesn't happen anymore though. I'm on t mobile.

This is a widespread issue with Bluetooth on Android (since about KitKat, possibly earlier) that spans just about every possible combination of hardware and software. It is exactly like you said -- the phone's CPU is too slow to keep up with Bluetooth audio decoding and streaming when the screen is asleep. The CPU governor is too aggressive on saving every last microwatt of battery life, and would rather your experience suffer instead.
The issue is very well-documented, but Google refuses to fix it. See here for hundreds of complaints spanning every major manufacturer and just about every imaginable Bluetooth headphones, speakers, headset, earbuds, etc. etc.:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=95294
its an easy fix, just download kernel adiutor, set the minimum to 500 and see. I personally set the min and max of little cpu to 900 and big to 1200mhz.
