[SOLVED] How Can I Wipe My SD Completely On The Phone? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I once had apps2sd so I had some sort of partition scheme going on. I don't really remember as this was months ago and I have since stopped using apps2sd, but still have the partition there.
What command can I run on the terminal that will wipe the entire (all partitions) SD card so that I can start from scratch and re-partition for when I load up Cyanogen's ROM?
Thanks in advance.
** Also, I have been out of the loop for a little while, I have a 8gb class 6 sdcard. What ext should I go with when running Cyanogen's ROMs? 2/3/4?

Just use the format sd card option on the phone if your just wanting to wipe your card.
I have my card set up with ext3.

So using that will wipe all partitions?

Yea. But if you got apps2sd running right now your phone prolly won't work right after you wipe the card.

I don't so I should be fine. Thanks!
Oh, in your opinion, what is the easiest way to partition the card? There are so many methods.

Me personally, I like to use Ubuntu. Theres a tuturial in my sig if you've never tried it.

I will keep that bookmarked.
WHat if I have to do it on my phone?

You mean without a pc all together.

Well, I can try ADB, but I don't think it's set up on my machine properly. So yes, strictly on the phone.

In my opinion, this is the best way. No offense to supreme of course but I can literally open up this tutorial and have my card partitioned in less than a minute. The cool thing is you can do it both from terminal or adb if you don't want to deal with the small buttons on the phone and you don't have to remove your card from your phone.
I just used it an hour ago as a matter of fact!

Gentleman. Thank you very much. I'll give it a go.

Dam it DirectMatrix you S.O.B.
LOL. J/K. I'm just stuck on using Ubuntu. But that is another easy way.

That seems to have worked just fine!
Again, many many thanks! I've been running an old Roger's build just for exchange. I've been sitting with it just because I'm lazy, but with Cyanogen's 4.0 out, it was time to get off my lazy ass!

Cool glad it worked. But yea I'm on that boat too. Just to lazy sometimes.

formatting microsd issue

using parted, copied commands from one of the hero threads, but my old partitions wont go away, has anyone seen that? does it mean the card is fried? i can do rm 1, rm 2, etc but when i type print, it shows the same exact partitions from before, as if they wont delete, running out of ideas, i even tried with a gparted boot cd.
Did you try formating the entire card to fat32 from the phone and then deleting the fat32 partition so you have a blank card?
due to apps2sd, cant even do it from phone since its all whacked out, wont format.

Might as well try it If that doesn't work try flashing a JF ROM and formatting sdcard from there. (within phone)

Have you tried ubuntu. Look in my sig for tut.
read only on your SD card / reader, means that the side of it, the lock is on. look for the little button and make sure its not locked, that would make it read only, and sound like the issue here

Like he said, re-formatting from the phone will remove all partitions and automatically format everything back to a single fat32 partition. Of course if all else fails...g-parted ftw!

I used some of the readers and phones. And there is no lock staff on the microSD. I can read/write other microSD with the readers and phones. And I could read/write the microSD with them, before this happen.

I just had a single fat32 partition on it. I didn't do anything like converting to ext2,3,whatever...
Firstly, I could use the microSD, and I could format it. But it suddenly comes like that. Around that time, I was just trying many apps from Market. I didn't do any special staff on the phone...
finally got around to replying to this, yeah i tried via g-parted, and that failed too, i think the card is hosed, no big deal.

switched from unknown class to class 6

I recently made the change from an unknown class 2gb sdcard to a class 6 4gb sdcard and now things are going crazy. Hero has become unbelievably unstable and cyanogenmod boot loops.
any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.
My guess is you failed to transfer over the apps that were on that old sd card (in the ext 2/3 partition) and now the phone can't find them. Either copy over all the data (search the forums to find out how) or do a wipe to make your phone forget about all tthose apps.

i've done several wipes, several reformats of the ext3 and the entire card, i've tried to do nandroid backup restores, nothing is working. :\
Done a full wipe and still issues? Huh. Try removing the card completely and doing a wipe. You shouldnt get any errors not having an SD card. If you do get errors then this might take a while. If you get no errors then your card is somehow screwing things up.
mistaken post. ignore this
so turns out there is something wrong with my sdcard. tried flashing xROM 1.4 at least three times and got boot loops every time, then booted up without the card in and booted up fine.
it also works when i use the switchrom script to restore.
is there anything i can do to make this card usable?
Don't take my word for it, but maybe a format and partition of the card again would probably work.

btw you could try completely unformatting the card then re partitioning the empty space

SD card issues

So, I got a 4GB sdcard the other day. It came out of a blackberry a friend of mine was using. I formatted the card to FAT32 with the utility in windows 7, and everything seemed to be fine. I downloaded ext2fsd to be able to copy my ext partition to my new card. I followed the directions from the website about mounting the ext partition.
After I performed the steps above, my sdcard became unusable. I tried to take it out, and put it back in my card reader, and I get an error saying windows needs to format the drive, if I try to format it, it doesn't work. I've tried in gparted as well, and also get an error. I even tried from Amon's revorery, and sdparted in the console. I don't get errors with the latter two, but my card reader still says it's RAW.
I know that was lengthy, but I'm trying to figure out anymore steps to take, or if I should just throw the card away.
Thanks
ok..
wow.
You have to have 3 partitons. If you only format it with 1 partiton, you cant save data on a partition that doesnt exsist.
You have to go to recovery console and make a fat32, ext3 and linux swap partion.
I dont have the patience to go trhough it all with you because its in 100 different threads so .. use search?
Not trying to be rude, but this is stuff you can fin don your own here very easily if you werent expecting someone to do it for you
EDIT-- sorry, dont think i read fully what you did. I had this same thing happen today on a friends brand new 8gb.
HEres what I did since you have Amen ras recovery..
Format to just FAT32.
Turn on usb
give it a second to pop up and it will and check the size.
Then turn off the usb, go into parted on console, rm 1, then remake all 3 partitons according to the size of the card.
I suggest not using the full partiton in the recovery because it usualy screws up the swap.
From there you will be fine.
If it doesnt work that way, then im sorry, the card may be pooped or to low a class maybe?

Yeah, I know you're not trying to be rude, but I know I need 3 partitions. I'm pretty aware of the way a sd card needs to be partitioned. I've tried everything mentioned. I think it's about time to call it quits. It's a class 2 card, so I don't think that's the issue, and I can't format in Ubuntu, or Windows. Oh well I suppose. Thanks.
You can try this app. Its called Sd formatter...it reformats the SD. IT worked for me.

I forgot to include this in the original list of things I tried, but I did give it a go. It is telling me the card is write-protected even though the switch on the adapter is set to the unlocked position. I've also tried it with a different adapter. I appreciate everybody's input.
well try using parted commands to write from block 0 to the last block and partition the whole thing as fat32
is that not working?
did you tried partitioning with RA 1.2.3 recovery?
@B-man007
I haven't tried writing the whole thing to FAT32 with parted. I'll give that a try tonight (don't have the card with me).
@cholito
I'm using RA 1.2.2, I think the script is the same, so I don't know that it would make a difference if I was using that or 1.2.3

[Q] Ready to Root?

Hi all.
I'm getting my NC in 2 days, and I'm looking to make sure I've got my ducks in a row so I can root it right away when I do get it. Here is what I have resource and hardware wise. Can any of you that have done this already tell me if I'm missing anything?
I have:
- Nook Color (Soon!)
- 16gb SD card
- Card reader
- Windows 7 PC
- This guide from Nookdevs (nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting)
- Patience
Am I missing anything? With what I have I should be able to sit down and root it as soon as I have the device, correct?
Thanks very much!
Sounds about right to me. I had the biggest pain in the ass trying to install ADB. It eventually started working, but I have no idea how or why haha.
Perfect. So there should be a USB cable in the box with the Nook then? I dont need to buy any cabling separately or anything?
If so I guess I just get to sit on my hands for a couple days!

Well, I am working nights this week, so if I *do* miss any hardware I'll be stuck until I can get to a store after the holidays.
Also, it's my first time rooting/jailbreaking anything so I want to make sure I'm aware of what I'll need. I'm not an idiot, (I work as a systems analyst) but it's still a new process for me.
I'd grab a linux bootdisk, if possible. The main reason is that after rooting the nook, it can be hard to get your sd card back to the proper size (it will register as a 40mb device). Win7 wouldn't see the remaining 7.96GB of my device, but ubuntu's Disk Utility did just fine.
That's weird... did the nook still detect the correct size? If you loaded more than 40mb of data on there then put it into the nook what happened? Once you detected the correct size in Linux were you able to access the full card from windows, or have you had to load all your data onto the card via linux since then?
Honestly I dont even really care if the SD card bricks after I'm done with it. I'm getting one just to root the device, (USB key or cloud storage for me thanks) and I guess for extra storage on the Nook itself afterwards. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll look into that solution if I need to.
you can't load more than the 40MB that windows sees, until you fix the partition table of the SD card. It may be due to the software I used to write the image (I think it was Win32 Disk Imager, recommended on nookdevs).
Either way, it's not hard to load up an Ubuntu liveCD, go to System -> Administration -> Disk Utility, select the SD Card, delete the partitions, and then create a new partition (FAT32, I believe), and then re-load it to the nook. It took less than 10 minutes to get my SD card back to the correct size.
Right, gotcha. Thanks much If I run into that I'll make myself a linux disk.
Just use the nook itself to format the microSD and it will read the proper size afterwards. It worked for me anyways.

Seconded. A linux distro is always handy, but unnecessary for the partitioning
I was going to mention the re-formatting of the SD card quirkyness since that was an issue for me, but I see that's been covered already
Oh, and patience is really not something you need much of for this. If you follow the instructions on nookDevs, it's a completely painless process. Seriously.. they've made it that frakkin' easy.

Do you know if the "Install ADB" step is absolutely neccesary? Or is it just Optional? That step looks the most intimidating.

I am more interested in the note at the top
Note: For users who have failed at implementing the instructions below several times, the NookColor community reccomends that you use market and download adb wireless, and perform your adb work over the wifi connection to the NC rather than painfully trying to install and modify the drivers over and over. If you would prefer to do that in the first place rather than the instructions below, we won't be insulted.

So... does that mean I can just use Auto-Nooter, then grab the ABD app from the marketplace and it automates everything else? Or am I mis-reading this?

back with HERCIMG.zip problems D:<

Lately my phones been a real *****. Hboot wont recognize HERCIMG.zip's at all. It scans for them and comes up blank. Showing script that says something about 'no HERCIMG or wrong .img'
I got it to work a few weeks ago but I had to ruu and I guess it screwed things up. I have no idea what could be bringing this on.
I've downloaded several HERCIMG.zips with recovery.img's in them and placed them on the root of the sd card and no luck.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA Premium App
I had this problem about month or so back trying to ruu and get the newest pri. I was s-off and had tried everything to get my phone to recognize the HERCIMG.zip with no luck. Just like you it would go through its checks and say no image found.
What finally worked for me was reformatting my sd card. I never had any problems with it. I was flashing and saving with it and never partitioned it so I did not think anything was wrong and no reason to reformat it. But I found one other person with the problem on some random forum and they said a reformat worked. So I backed up my whole card on my pc and formatted. Put everything back on it afterwards booted to hboot and the phone recognized it right away.
Not sure if this will help but could be worth a try I was ready to give up but this saved me from going crazy trying to figure it out.
I was pulling my hair out trying to get a hercimg to work. I kept pushing it via adb and it wouldn't work, finally I mounted the sd card deleted the old hercimg and added the new one and voila.
That's kinda similar to the previous post's issue but not quite.

I used amon ra to reformat it. I had to set a value for the swap but I don't remember the exact value and I set the partition or ext2 to 0 thus eliminating any partition.
And like you ehusidic I have no usb data connection so I had to find a way to get the HERCIMG.zip to work from just my phone. Sorry this didn't seem to work for you guys. It was the saving grace for me.
