Hi,
I'm wondering to know if you know application to avoid black screen during calls for the HTC Hero.
RucaNebas
Yes. On the app store there is a free app called Shake Awake. It detects the movement of pulling the phone away from your ear and activates the screen. The sensitivy can be adjusted.
Thank you very much for your quick replay Paul.
I installed and it seems to work.
Thank you again.
Do you know where I can find cool applications for our Hero?

Wow, this works very nice.

You're very welcome.
I have so far only installed apps from the Android Market.
Excellent find.
Not working on HTC Hero :-((
Do you know why?
Yeah, didn't work on the Hero. I hope they fix that with the update and also that annoying vibrate when the phone connects. While interesting concept it is really not needed. I figure I know when it connects when the other person says hello.
You can use Keepscreen, there is a lite version ;-)
Hi,
you may use the free app calle KeepScreen Lite, too.
This app lets you choose for which apps you want the screen always stay on.
The Hero uses a specific phone app, whose name is different from google standard phone app ... But KeepScreen lets you manually choose the apps you want.
There are two versions of keepscreen : the free one (called lite), which is 'limited' to standard google apps, and two of user's chose. The pay version is unlimited.
edit : bricabrac : you won this one
Thank you guys.
I'm sorry to back again, but I need to understand your explanations.
Do you mean that the KeepScreen Lite application could be installed on the Hero and activates the screen during calls?
Which is the Hero app name that keeps the screen always stay on during calls?
I had already created a thread with regard to the screen switching off during a call here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547736
Shakeawake doesn't seem to work for all and for those it does it can be unreliable.
PowerManager can be set (in a profile) to keep the screen alive when making a call for up to a minute (specify by number of secs... I think) which gives you plenty of time to get past those 'pick 1 to do ... pick 2.... etc' type calls.
Hope this helps
how do i install this " shake awake" program on my foon! new 2 andriod

KeepScreen
if i'm not mistaken the actual phone app should be named "Dialer"
KeepScreen is now completely free, and has in the free version all functionality
ahm, can anyone tell me how do i turn the screen off again after i awoke it? my ear keeps checking notifications :/
fyi...on my hacked sapphire, keepscreen was a little buggy. it would sometimes still allow dialer app to go dark while on call even with the keepscreen app running as confirmed in both notification bar and running apps. also, when rebooting phone, keepscreen requires restart but that is probably normal. for me, i decided i rather not deal with the problem of occasional face/key-press on long calls and just let the device go dark. i've become familiar with the quick-key presses to handle call-swap, speaker-on, and such...
I have shake awake since a while and it works fine.
Keepscreen is nice to keep applications "awake"
Hi everyone,
Okay this might be a dumb question but I'm going to ask. Is there a way to remotely enable/activate the GPS and WiFi on my Android phone through a text message? I currently have GPS Tracker, Lost My Droid, Real Time GPS Tracker, Seek Droid, SMS GPS Enabler, and Where's My Droid installed on my phone to try and remotely turn on my GPS and WiFi. The problem is that yes sending the text to my phone and have the sound go off for Where's My Droid and Lost My Droid works, but the problem is having my GPS and WiFi turned off on my phone and not hearing because its not there. Yes, their are plenty of good apps that let you track your phone if your GPS is on, but they do not allow you to turn on GPS and WiFi through (SMS) text. So all and all, is there an app or apps that can do this for me, so I can do what I want to do?
Any information would be helpful, instructions would be better lol.
Thanks, II

I am the Dev of seek droid. Why leave the GPS disabled? It really does not conserve that much battery. Enabling the GPS does not leave the GPS turned on or even give the GPS any power unless the application you are using requests GPS.
Go pick up tasker from the market, and you can create a profile to have it enable gps whenever you get an sms.
You should probably have taker already anyways. It's a beast.

For some reason on my phone if I leave the GPS enabled it will drain out my battery in a few hours (8hrs). Where as if I turn GPS off, my battery has lasted up to almost 16hrs which is double and it is the only setting that I have changed.

Thanks for the advice pizz0wn3d. I will look into Tasker and see if it works for me and what I need it to do.
f you don't see the satellite dish in the notification bar then it really shouldn't use any battery, even if GPS is enabled. If you have location stuff turned on so the GPS is being used (i.e. you see the satellite dish in the notification bar) it will use battery.

Let me know and I can send you the profile I use. It makes the phone talk (alerting them that gps is being remotely enabled to track the phone down) and sends a confirmation text to the number that activates the gps. Then you can use "wheres my droid" or whatever else to track that S.O.B. down.

Bob, I do know this. For some reason my Map app starts up on its own and launches Latitude causing my GPS to activate and stay on. I don't want to uninstall Maps or Latitude because I do use them. Its easier to just turn off GPS then hassle with trying to find the source of the problem, in truth.

Well the way my profile is set up, whenever I receive a text with a certain phrase in it, it'll turn on the gps. Along with a few other things
It's not one of the advertised features because it's just one of the many things you can do with it.
I'll try to post a dropbox link in a few minutes.
Edit: This oughta work. Import this into tasker.
http://db.tt/D7u8eKw
It should be able to import after you paste the xml file into:
/sdcard/tasker/profiles
Then just hit menu -> profile data -> import one profile

If you use Latitude, it will be on all the time and cause battery drain because it needs update your location 24/7 even if Gmaps is not used. You don't have to uninstall it. Just make sure you log out of Latitude if you don't use it.

Oh sorry, normally I do but I haven't been on xda outside of the app in a few days so I haven't been able to look at my messages.
There is a wiki on the app that has a bunch of different profiles you can try out, as well as a couple of tutorials to get the hang of making profiles.

Well for the lock screen; I was trying a remote lock down after I enabled the GPS tracking, so they could not turn it off, other then removing the battery of course. The only thing I can do right now is, set screen time out to 7sec. which is the smallest amount Tasker allows. The lock in Tasker is a joke because if you click on the notification bar at the top and select something you can bypass the lock, even in full screen mode.
As for the Ringtone/Ringer; I was trying to setup the phone to ring when people text me, similar to that of Where's My Droid, but with a twist. When I get their text, the assigned ringtone under their contacts or from file would play, that way I would know who it was without having to look at my phone every time. For this one in particular; do you or someone else know how Where's My Droids setup works? Then I can try to base it off of that. From what I can tell, it tricks the SMS into using the the ringer system and not the notification system. So a bait and switch from SMS Receiver to Cell Receiver. That's all I know for now.
Thanks for the link! I'll go through it to learn some more about Tasker.

I've never tried to set up a remote lock through tasker, I just had it set up to enable the GPS so I could lock+retrieve it via wheres my droid/lookout. But i have heard that the tasker lock down was pretty weak >.<
I actually never realized the phone didn't support custom tones for contacts outside of the calling ringtones. That actually sounds pretty difficult to implement via tasker. You would first have to disable notifications from your sms app so the tasker profile wouldn't just play a sound over that one. You'd also likely have to create a separate profile for each contact that you want to have a custom sms tone for.
Is there a way to have profiles like in blackberry? I love my new phone but get a bit confused about the ring and vibrate and was wondering if there was a central place to do this or to create a shortcut?
I want all my messages to vibrate and when I go to bed, I want to use alarm and phone to ring but everything else on silent.

No, nothing as complex as setting up specific profile, simple thing like system wide silence yes.
I use quick profiles (its free). But their are countless others on the market, their is bound to be one that you will like
Spark Audio Profiles v2.1
We have released Spark Audio Profiles 2.1 in android market.
Search market for 'Spark Audio Profiles'.
Try lite version, its free with few restrictions.
If you have suggestions for any features, we would love to hear you.

I always find just putting on silent is the most you can do to truly put it on vibrate. Just pull down your taskbar on the top.
I thought it was about time to create a unified thread that everyone can add to, about ICS annoyances and issues that you are experiencing using the new ICS releases that are coming out almost daily now. The developers post what is not working, like "Camera", but in reality that just refers to the hardware that isn't working. Functionality is a different story and my hope is that this thread can be a single place where everyone posts what their annoyances/issues are and then the community can decide what items need to go on the "hot list" below. This list will be the items we'd like to see fixed by our ever-so-awesome development community.
Regardless of which ICS build you are using (ICS4BIONIC, CM9, AXI0M, AOKP, KANG, etc.) there will always be little quirks that you'd like to see fixed. Post them here, and we'll see where it goes!
NOTE: Try not to post "as designed" annoyances/issues. For example, if you don't like that pressing the apps tray button brings up the apps list, well that is how Google "designed" their OS to work. That is a preference thing, not an actual "issue" that needs to be fixed, so you should seek out a third party app to address your need. Also, this list should attempt to only contain items that are issues on all custom ROMs, not just your specific one.
I will start this out with my list. I will edit/modify this list as time goes by and items get fixed and recommended, or deemed important/unimportant by the participants of this thread.
CURRENT HOT LIST (updated 2012-02-29):
Data must be toggled to GSM then back to CDMA/LTE after every boot (This is commonly known by users who have been flashing ICS over the last few weeks/months)
Contact images do not restore, even after Facebook app is installed and all contacts are set to sync. All contacts have default gray Android image instead of contact photo.
If you make/receive a call while using other apps (such as Navigation) you cannot easily switch between them or go back to the home screen (you have to wait until the other person hangs up)
Screen rotation is VERY slow by default (200ms wait time). Change to 100ms or 50ms for easier usability
Camera works fine for still images, but you cannot record video. Pressing the record button does not start recording, it just flashes and does nothing. Switching to Panorama mode also crashes the camera app altogether.
Native Gallery no longer has scroll button to quickly drag through photo library. You have to manually swipe through multiple pages. In my case, I have about 50 pages of thumbnails, and have to swipe for about 30-45 seconds before I get to the date range of the photos I want to look at.
Toggling GPS sometimes modifies Location check boxes, and even though you have re-enabled GPS, you have to manually go into Settings/Location and recheck the "Standalong GPS" box
The native Launcher has no ability to add widgets by pressing/holding on the target home screen as in all other Android OS versions. You now have to go deep into the Apps/widget menu to add widgets (unless you use a 3rd party launcher which of course uses more memory, and should not be necessary)
Many Apps are unsteady and not ready for ICS, like K9 Mail, Root Uninstaller, etc. They will install, and seem to function, but odd behavior occurs. For example, K9 Mail will mix up user credentials between email accounts. Root Uninstaller will see all your apps, but show 0.00kb space used for some apps, so the "Uninstall" button is grayed out and the app cannot be removed. MovieStudio app crashes after creating new project.
Many Games (even simple ones like Doodle Jump and Cubes), will completely freeze up the phone and make it non-responsive after only 5-10 seconds of gameplay. The powerbutton will not even respond, and the user has to do a complete battery pull (which for me is a pain since I have an Otterbox, multiple-layers to remove, then put back on).
Apps that toggle the LED light are very delayed when trying to turn them off. For example, the most popular one on the Market is named "Tiny Flashlight + LED" which includes a widget to turn the LED on/off from your home screen. This worked flawlessly on Android 2.3, but on ICS toggling the LED is very unpredictable. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds to a minute to turn off. Sometimes it does not turn off at all, and the phone begins to get really hot and you have to reboot.
Native Wifi Tether/Hotspot Toggle does not work. You must use the 3rd party Wifi hotspot app.
The wallpaper is static now, and does not move in the background when swapping left/right between home screens. I have not found a way to modify this, and this may not be a "bug" per say, but how Android 4.x is designed (a change in GUI). If you are like me though and liked the old way which helped me know which screens I was on, then it can be annoying. The screen indicator line is so small now, a tiny 2 pixel bar at the bottom, so it is hard to see which segment is highlighted.
VoiceToText feature now does live translation, where it converts the words as you say them, rather than waiting until you finish speaking an then analyzing. This can be good and bad, since now you have to manually press a "Done" button everytime you stop speaking, as the voice engine will not automatically close and analyze when you stop talking as it does up through Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
DSPManager (Digital Signal Processing app) only modifies output through plugged in speakers or headphones, not live playback through phone speaker.
Muting: The user is unable to mute a phone call. Pressing the mute mic button will cause it to flash, but the mute feature never actually enables.
NOTE: I will not change the numbers next to each issue, but instead add new ones to the list that you all come up with, so if you reference a specific # in your follow-up posts then they will always stay accurate throughout the life of this thread when others are reading it.

MIUI modifications are custom changes made by 3rd parties to modify the Android GUI/functionality and OS as a whole. Others can vote on this, but I don't believe this falls under the annoyance/issue category. Custom mods are really a different subject. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I'm not certain what you mean by this response. Can you please clarify?
FYI - The intent of this list is to keep the issues to Android-OS related items that we'd like to see the developers fix or enhance to work better. This list should only contain issues/annoyances of the OS of official system apps themselves that we'd like to tweak or change. The whole concept behind MIUI is basically wanting to turn your Android phone, for exmaple, into an iPhone, by making the GUI behave like Apple. This is just an example as there are many various MIUI endeavors. Thes emodifications basically install custom apps and change the GUI of the OS. This would be considered an after-ROM addon and changes the fundamental design of Google's Android OS. That is not what this list is trying to get at. We want to make the Android OS, as it is intended, work better; not redesign the Android ROM altogether. I hope that makes sense.
For example - See Wintergon's previous post about not being able to mute a phone call. That's a defect/annoyance that should already work properly, so it was added to the hot list. Of course, comments, questions and other viewpoints are totally welcome.

Hmm. I use wifi pretty much the whole day at work and at home and have never had any drops. They are different routers and ISPs as well. I would look into your wifi router settings. Try downloading the app named "Wifi Analyzer" from the Android Market and make sure your router is setup to use a Channel number that no neighboring wifi networks are using.

Guys
I really want to get this app working because it seems like a good one and meets my requirements. But it's either way too buggy or I just haven't set it up right
See attached screenshots in sequence
1) pic1 shows only a night list configured from 9:30pm - 7:30am where i want calls/texts to be rejected. I'm a light sleeper. Outside of these times, its supposed to revert to day list with no blocking configured at all
2) pic2 shows the status right now (11:25am) but somehow it's set to night list
3) pic3 - if I click on day list, this is the error I get. Why does the app think that at 11:25am, night list is the right one since it's clearly configured to be only at night 9:30pm-7:30am
Can someone help?
Thx
Anybody?
I can't help with the app as I have zero experience with it, but doesn't the native priority notification system do pretty much the same thing? I also haven't used it, so I could be wrong.
I am currently using a custom ROM, which I am not entirely sure has changed anything. But it has the option to block certain types of notifications (messages, calls, events and reminders), then has some sub options for them like allowing starred contacts to contact you still. You can also set times.

Thx
