yesterday i was thinking that a year ago, the iPhone updated its operating system to support this, then I started checking that it was just a system setting on android, its just that there was no interface to change it... I couldn't believe that nobody has done it before.

What about adding a checkbox to keep BlueTooth on? You should be able to do that as well.

Yeah, it's gonna have to wait till tomorrow though, it works perfect, I have it on my phone, but tonight I decided to stay at my gf's and didn't bring my computer, tried extracting the apk from my phone to upload but the signing doesn't match, so, I will upload it tomorrow for you guys. Sorry!
Would it be possible to add an option to turn WiFi on while the airplane mode is enabled? That would be great because then one could avoid turning airplane mode off and on again for just enabling WiFi.
Very good idea. Do you have the source available? Once you get an alpha version, let us devs knows so we can incorporate this into the roms. The perfect operating system is coming soon
fantastic app- saw it last night- downloaded...used heaps already. I had thought of this app but being a total dunce at programming i waited for someone else to do it- funnily enough 2 days ago i was just about to post on here asking if anyone knew of an app that did this!!
thanks heaps- will buy another app to support.... musicsleep i reckon- good for getting kids to sleep

I could probably add a shortcut to the wifi configuration settings. You can't do this from the phone settings directly since it gets disabled. HOWEVER, if you add an AnyCut (or BetterCut) shortcut to Wifi Settings directly, they will work fine and you will be able to turn on/off and configure wifi while in airplane mode.

It's EXTREMELY easy to enable this, I think the only "problems" you might run into will be changing the android settings so it doesn't disable the checkboxes for wireless when airplane mode is activated but I will provide the source code later on today when I get home, let me upload it to github and let's figure a way to enable this on the system to be used in a rom.

Awesome! Yes, I never needed it before, so I never researched, but I remember seeing it on the iPhone (after OS 2.0) when I had the 1st gen iphone, I remember using it when I was browsing and didn't want to get interrupted, but I'm sure people have other uses.
thank you very much for your support!
The bluetooth option is not working very well, I'm starting to think it is a problem with the android os itself, well see.
Also, we might be getting native support for this soon.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3289
Open sourced.
http://github.com/velazcod/Airplane-Mode-Wifi-Enabler/tree/master
That version includes bluetooth support, however, it doesn't work.
Enjoy, hopefully we get this enabled in custom roms. All you guys have to do is that in the Settings.System.AIRPLANE_MODE_RADIOS, make the default values to 'cellphone, bluetooth' instead of 'cellphone, bluetooth, wifi'. Those are the radios that will be turned off when Airplane Mode is enabled, so if you remove a value from that csv list and that value's radio should stay on.
As you can see, wifi works fine, but bluetooth and cellphone do not, they keep turning off without the ability to be turned on after setting airplane mode.

Here it is the long awaited Sherpa app v1.0
Works perfect on phone with cy3.6.81

A Quick Note About Sherpa
With Cyanogen already including Sherpa in his latest experimental build, there have been a few issues that have arisen. I feel that, because of these issues, any devs who are considering adding Sherpa to their builds should make users aware of these issues. If you are such a dev, feel free to add the following list to your first post. Also, you should make it clear that this version of Sherpa is pre-release.
If you wish to add Sherpa to your builds, you can download the .apk here: http://gynecologistcobra.net/apps/Sherpa.apk
Major Issues
Do not open the keyboard while Sherpa is running. It may cause it to crash.
Sherpa does not work properly on non-US devices. In the worst cases, it will fail to connect to the server. Even if it does connect, it may not be able to discover your surroundings.
Sherpa may fail to launch completely.
Sherpa requires GPS to be active to auto-locate you.
Sherpa may turn on your Wi-Fi while it is running.
Minor issues
Auto-rotate does not work in Sherpa.
It also sometimes just won't start, freezing up while trying to acquire the GPU. Awesome app though

Well, it was designed for the Magic, which has more RAM, ergo it can freeze on start up.

Actually, now that you mention it, I have seen the 'Open Wi-Fi Networks' notification flash up while I was running Sherpa. While my WiFi was turned off.
I think this is definitely a pre-release. If you watch logcat, there are hundreds of exceptions being thrown.

Good stuff on the bugs list but im thinkin the sherpa app that got leaked was a beta version and there will be plenty of bugs, so don't hold your breathe yet but i guess wait till the official once releases.

We know it's a prerelease version. However, people may want to start putting it in their builds, like Cyan has done, so there should be a bugs list.

That is weird, it does take a few seconds to show, maybe it takes longer on Hero since it is a slower ROM.
After playing around with this app.. I must say its definitely one of the best "places" type app out there. I have noticed a couple things that havent been mentioned. First off, i havent had any fc even after opening the keyboard. The app screen doesnt rotate but is still functional for me in landscape.
I assume this app you can set your location manually via zipcode, city, etc. I would imagine that this also picks up via GPS.
On the bottom where it tells me my location, it is set for my home. GPS isnt picking me up elsewhere, as i am not at home. When i search by zip it works fine.
I also tried to go to google maps and lock on gps there.. but no go so far.
Like i said, i know there will be some small bugs considering this app isnt meant for the g1 Anyone else experience the GPS not locking your current location?
My GPS is off. On google maps I get the correct location but in Sherpa it thinks I'm at home, not at work.

Yeah.. I hear you. If i have my gps enabled and go the the Menu in Sherpa, select Go to Location. There is a "Use Current location" Then the little circle to the left of you displayed location with "think" for a couple seconds and stay at the same location... I dont even know how it picked up that location.
If my gps in not enabled then the circle with "think" for as long as you let it.

So who's willing to test drive the new version?
It worked on my phone ONCE, and then it didn't work again. I have checked everything and bluetooth keeps turning off, I'm starting to think this part of the android's "airplane mode" is broken, but let's see.
I tried it on 2 other phones and didn't work.

Hey all,
I am by no means a dev, but I have had some interesting revelations on the Sprint TV app. I've been messing with the apk and found I can run the app if I delete the check_wifi.lua file. If I try to edit it, it will crash. I tried changing the ip address it checks for wifi, but it won't install if I do that.
I think it'd be an easy thing to do, but I know very little about all this. Any thoughts?

All I did was open it in notepad and changed the last number in the ip address to a 0 so that it would fail to see wifi is on. Since I honestly don't know what signing it is, perhaps this is best left out of my hands.
I got it to work by switching back and forth between it and other apps. Now it has been working every time i launch it.

i read somewhere that you needed to get the TV widget on your screen also
even with that i couldnt get it to work ... so after several frustrating reboots
I FINALLY GOT A LISTING!!
at first, it was telling me that i needed to subscribe to every damn channel i tried to watch
but when i went to the subscriptions menu, i saw that i was already subscribed to everything
some more reboots later everything loaded and i could watch channels
now the whole Wifi thing could probably get fixed by some baksmali/smali edits ... im still trying to get a grasp on how to do this so cant help with that yet :\
My tv app works over 3g now.
My tv started working once i hit 3g in my area no reboot
mines working also
mine just started worrking all of sudden too ! so I installed on my wifes mt3g also worked after a while by itself ?! I had widget on at that time anyways if you dont get it to work try again its really well worth it !

There is some kind of issue with some phones that seems to send phone calls directly to voicemail when you have bot WIFI and LTE enabled at the same time. I have never used Tasker, would that be possible to set up this way? Do you guys know of any app that will do that automatically. Thanks in advance for help or feedback.

Tasker won't switch your lte on and off with the stock Rom, but it will control WiFi and Bluetooth, and you will be able to set up a location based profile to do it automatically.

Okay, I have been looking over Tasker, it does so much it quickly intimitades new users like me lol. Thanks that answers my question and I appreciate your post.
I had the same problem with Tasker. Even with some of the tutorials, they steps they used must have been for an older version as they didn't even match what I was seeing on the screen.
If you want to try a much simpler interface try out Locale. Its the same concept, but the interface is a LOT easier to understand for newcomers. I have mine set using location to turn on WiFi/off BT/set ringers to 10% volume/check into FourSquare when I get to work, turn on BT/off WiFi/Open Google Listen & GasBuddy when I get in the car and such. Most of the plug-ins you can use with Tasker can also be used with Locale too.
However, I suspect what you are wanting to do would require a plug-in as it is a sort of advanced procedure but maybe if you find some app that will allow turning off 4G, you could at least have it open the app or toggle to turn it on and off as you leave home - if you can't have it happen automatically.

My understanding is that Google, since Jelly Bean, has pulled the API's for turning off radios and GPS (just as they have with battery stats in 4.4) in the interest of more secure devices. So without root, and in some cases something other than the stock rom, programmatical access to these settings is no longer possible.

On the stock Moto X (XT-1053) you can turn GPS on/off via Tasker without root or using Secure Settings. It was a delight to see this, and not get the GPS nag screens I've previously gotten on a SGS3 (Verizon). Would have to play around, but you might be able to execute an activity or shortcut in Tasker that brings up the settings screen where you can choose 2G data and then script a screen tap in just the right place. Essentially automating the actions you'd take doing it manually. Not as pretty as a direct setting, but Tasker can execute this kind of thing very fast so it's of little bother to see it flash by on your screen.

OK - Just made a task which turns on GPS waits several seconds and turns it off. Verified it was actually on/off when it said it was on. I'm running 4.2.2. My son "upgraded" to 4.4 on his Moto X, and Tasker GPS manipulation doesn't work on his. I didn't root, and verified as much with root checker, so it seems this is an "upgraded" feature in 4.4.
I'd consider rooting, but do like some of the Moto rom features so don't really want to move to an alternate rom & not wild about losing warranty. Maybe a little off topic, but if you root 4.2.2 and latter upgrade to some 4.4.x release, will you end up losing root?

Interesting... My recollection is this was disabled under JB on my Nexus 4. I didn't have 4.2.2 on my Moto X long enough to test.
Can you toggle airplane mode using tasker?
Off topic for here but a quick question. Would this be a good root quide to use. It seems pretty straightforward to understand and do. http://theunlockr.com/2013/12/11/root-motorola-moto-x-running-android-4-4-kitkat/ That site has been around and I think it is reputable but wanted to check.
Dunno, but I am not sure you're gonna be able to toggle LTE even if rooted. At least the description of Secure Settings suggests you can't without a custom rom.
If you turn off mobile data, does that solve your incoming call issue?
Just read that Three is discontinuing it's WiFi calling app as most phones have this as standard now. I have no reception in my flat so this has been a lifesaver. Adding the Toggles to Settings is the easy bit. It doesn't mean a thing as far as getting the functions working though. The ROM, and specifically the telephony parts of it, need to have all the necessary code added. We know that 3 can add the bits needed on phones where they have control over the software updates. Otherwise it's down to the Manufacturer/ROM.
You never know, OOS Pie might have this working natively. You could ask in the Community Beta thread to see if anyone there has any idea. Or wait a while longer until OOS Pie is in Stable channel. (I assume you don't want to try the Community Beta?)

I'm not surprised. I doubt it's high on their list of priorities. Especially as a lot of this stuff is carrier specific. They probably expect the carriers themselves to add the necessary modifications before the units get into the hands of customers, which is what happens most of the time. Except, Oneplus phones are usually bought off contract as nobody here offers them with contracts.

Haven't gotten around rooting and installing it. I have volte in most of the flat so the phone kinds works at home.
Fair enough, thanks for the reply. If I end up getting it working I'll report back
Tried to figure out how to instal lineage on my phone but I got stranded after installing ADB on my laptop. My problem is that most of the guides assumes that you know what you are doing in minute detail and therefore leave out quite a lot of steps. It also seems like you will lose all your data which means you need to back it up and to back it up you need to root the device which whips the data... Installing twrp seems also to wipe your data which is a bummer as you need that to do the backup of your phone.
As you can see I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't
Tried today to install lineage and I cannot say I'm impressed with the various guides I found. The lineage os wiki page omitted various steps such as which entry you needed to edit in the environment variables. There are several to choose from. Nor did it not mention that you need to enable unlocking the bootloader. Had to Google that to figure out how to get around that error
Installing twrp didn't work as it didn't recognise the file. Tried three different workarounds that didn't work. (File extension, dropping the twrp image onto the command window after typing the fastboot flash recovery line and moving the image to the desktop and the ADB folder.
Why do the people who write these guides assume you have extensive knowledge of installing ROMs instead of including all necessary steps. Needless to say, I failed to install lineage.
Rant over.
