Yeah, am I'm aware you can use the g1 as a wireless modem via the teather app but I'm wondering can you use it as a usb modem
You see I have a old computer and it has no wireless
Yup there is an app called pdanet for android google it. Its a trail that lets u vist all sites but after the trail expires u can just vist http sites or pay a one tom $30 for all sites again. Jus google it like i said.
Yo thanxs I'm a check it out
"Proxoid" is a good working http/s-proxy wich works over USB pretty easy

I'm planning on rooting my G1 soon and I'm wondering is there the option to do USB tethering instead of wifi/bluetooth tethering?
( I know about the non-root PAID app )
There's PDAnet. Don't know if thats the one you talking about but it's not on the market tho.
Just google search for PDAnet and you will get what you are looking for
thanks but pdanet is a paid app and is way overpriced. $30? I could USB tether for free when I had my MDA.
You can get it free.
You can get the trial of PdaNet here, but it's limited to http. Oh well, I'm happy with WiFi tehtering, it's windows only anyway so it's useless to me =P Sorry but I don't think anything else supports USB :-/
Try Proxoid. Youre gonna need ADB installed.
proxy SOCKS sucks in my opinion but it gets the job done.
Glad i bought a bluetooth adapter.
Manually switching from proxy to wireless was a pain in the ass.
Here is the background of my question, I let a co-worker borrow my wireless adaptor for my xbox. No wouldn't it be awesome if you could use your Fuze to connect to the internet via wifi signal for xbox? Or even you wirelss provider (would probably go over 5gig cap though). Hey man that would be a rock solid idea.

NRG Puts the "WiFi Internet Sharing" application on all of his Roms. But I am sure that you could find it if you searched for it.
@Buffalo Your sig leads me to believe you have NRGZ28's latest Rom. You should be able to go to all programs and find this on the list.

but how would you then get the signal to the xbox? i didn't think either the 360 or original had a wireless card in it. You would need some type of adapter to go to the xbox that would allow it to connect. If you do find a way, let us know, I don't have a wireless bridge for my xbox, this would be useful.

We are saying that you need to have the wireless adapter for the Xbox or the Xbox 360. I have done this with my Wii and it worked fine. I have no idea how much data i used. Is there a program that will log how much data you have used? Thanks

Look for Spb GPRS Monitor
I was wondering a way to bypass ms wifi adaptor
I have one already and I have another xbox, I know you can do it with a laptop and crossover cable but, I was just wandering and I am pretty sure that you will go over your internet cap if you played onlilne a good bit.
I send wifi from my phone to my laptop, and then cat5 to the xbox 360 to avoid having to buy the wireless adapter.
I never paid attention to usage though, my data is unlimited.
... but now i'm curious.
I'm curious too..
Anybody can post some usage stats.
OK.
2 hours Online
Data transfered: 351MB
Of which is uploaded data: 124MB
2 hours was about 12 / 13 games of halo 3
also, sat idiling in lobby for a while chatting to some friends in a party.
And - Pulled host in one game - lol
Intermittent Yellow bar Latency, meaning over 150ms to host, but green most of the time.
Not too bad, But if your on a data plan, then unlimited probably does not literally mean unlimited.
Most probably your isp / carrier will have a FUP (Fair usage policy) which will entitle you to a couple of GiB
Also - if your a 3g / hspda user, they can tell when you are tethering, and may not even count it to your bundle allowance.
I know T-Mobile in the uk here, used to not allow tethering, however, when web and walk came out, they changed their stand on that.
i just bought my droind from verizon and was told that there is a way to get my laptop on the internet from my phone. thanx in advance
Yes. The easiest way is PDAnet. This uses a USB connection from comp to phone. Download at junefrabrics.com You can try the free version. The paid version allows access to https sites. It works well. The more difficult solution is to root your phone and download WiFi tether from the market for Wifi tethering. Root instructions at droid-life.com
or you can wait for Froyo which should have a tethering option but expect to pay Verizon $20/month.
thank you for your response, i just want to be able to surf the web on my laptop from my phone. is it necessary to get the paid version? thanx again for your help.
The paid version isn't necessary unless you want to go to a site that begins with https: (a secure site). Try the free version you can purchase if you need to. Btw rooting is not that hard Kellex has some excellent vids on Droid-Life.com.

you can try out EasyTether in the app market..

z4root was pulled from the AT&T market over the weekend.
You can check this out: ponack.net (can't link cause I'm new here, sorry)
Gives you rooting instructions and (if wanted) instructions for installing the Cognition ROM...of course you can substitute your fav ROM instead.

Download the Samsung one click root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304&page=25 and download google's Wifi tether app or Barnacle wifi from market. If you can't find it in the market, you can use Market Enabler from the market to fool the market into thinking you are on TMobile.
Anything new on the tether without a root. Can't seem to find any of the programs that people talk about.
Thanks
dont mean to hijack but it has to do with captivate tethering..
i have assonance 5.2 and have tried tethering to my pc. seems to work but what i am really looking for is a way to tether and use my PC'S connection on my PHONE so i dont have to dwindle my data plan. ive been looking for a while actually on how i could 'reverse tether' but i guess im blind.

Are you trying to tether from a laptop or pc
From a phone

yea it should b possible but not very usefull since most pc's connect through wifi anyways so it would probely b more efficient to use wifi on your phone through your home network by installing a wireless router unless you are hard wired in which case u would need some kind of mobile hotspot type of program using wifi or bluetooth also usb of some sorts
problem solved with the newest version of connectify.
edit: well, my problem anyways.
Talked my buddy into a Gtab after giving him a test drive on mine...
1 problem, his smart phone is through Sprint and he uses a Black Berry.
He connects his LT to the internet with a USB cable and his BB.
I thought I could set him up through Bluetooth, but I cant figure out how to tether the connection.
I can "pair" the 2 together no problem, but I dont have a clue how to make the internet connection.
He uses a Sprint program on his LT, so I'm wondering if there's a program that would do the same on the Gtab...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks in advance...
Ive tried to usb and BT tether with no luck so far....anyone have any success?

I can get the 2 to "pair" without a problem, what I need is a terminal app to use the BB as a modem.
I know they do this on the iPad's all the time for the wifi only users.
I dont have enough experience with the Android OS to set this up.
I'm not even sure how to tether the Gtab to an Android phone.
Really need some help on this one or told it's not an option.
Thanks
As far as I know you can't do usb/bluetooth tethering atm . Unless someone manage to port over archos tethering protocol/tethering wizard.

I don't think it's an option direct from the GTab to the BB. I've been trying to get this to connect with my Storm 2, and have had no luck at all with it. Like you, I can pair the devices, but they won't connect. The only tethering software I can see that was worth a shot was Tether, and they don't support BB to Android.
Someone else in another thread pointed out a possible solution, a Cradlepoint CTR-350 Cellular Travel Router. You can connect your BB to create the access point, then connect the GTab to the 350. Runs about $77.00 from what I can tell online.

Keep me posted if you try this out....
Does blackberry have any hotspot apps?
My wife uses a Nokia N97, and purchased the Joikuspot hotspot app. The G-tab can see the Nokia's hotspot once the ad-hoc wifi hack is installed.
Will do, but the more I look the more I like the CradlePoint PHS300 Personal Hotspot. Little more expensive, but might be worth it since it's battery powered.

Good point... I pulled the Cradlepoint 350 up on line and it was AC only...
I also like the suggestion about "HOT SPOT" app on the BB... Haven't checked that as of yet....
If we can get this through software, that would be so much better...
He uses a Sprint program on the laptop to connect so we know it has the
capabilities to work as a modem and he has internet access.
I'm wondering how the iPad folks use their phones to connect to the internet.
I know most have the WIFI only models and they tether through their phones.
He just ordered the 300.....
They are running a holiday special of $99 dollars and that includes a free second backup battery....
Regular price was over 200 with shipping.... Cost him 109 with shipping...
He figures he can use the hot spot for other users also. It supports up to 16 users at once.
His Sprint card was listed as a option so this is even a better solution.
Huge thanks for pointing us in the right direction.

Bump...
Anyone have any more information on this, either the bluetooth pda net or using that 300?
Thanks!
Install pdanet and creat your hotspot. Once that is done go to your wireless setting and connect to the hotspot.

??? I have PDANet on my Black Berry and PDANet on my GTab. On the BB, I selected Enabled Bluetooth DUN. The same thing for the GTab. Doesn't do anything.
I suspect both are listening for something to connect to them. Not sure how this is supposed to work.
I'm using it with wifi via my iphone...
Ah, that must be the key. You can't do it via bluetooth. You have to have a wifi connection to your phone.
The original posting asked how to do this via bluetooth.
PDAnet via usb requires a client on the client computer. I contacted PDAnet if they would create an android client for tablets and their answer, atleast for now, is we are SOL. Use BT DUN. But like the OP I cannot get my G tab to connect, only pair with my droid x or Aria. I don't know what is supposed to happen after turning on the BT DUN in PDAnet. Should the G tablet then be able to connect? Does some other software need to be run on the gtab to allow DUN connection?
