IDEA VLC Streaming

VLC Player itself has a STREAMING option in the File>streaming
It can stream to HTTP, RTSP, UDP.... any know if this is possible to get chromecast to pick it up?
HTTP seems to be the logical choice. But no idea how to pick it up anyone familiar with these functions?

I think this is to stream something out on the web. It doesn't take local content and turn it into an http stream, if that is what you were wanting. In other words it doesn't really stream to http but it streams from an http url.

Actually, it does. I have used some media player for iOS that makes use of VLC's (desktop version) streaming of local content capability.

So it is possible to do it, just have to figure out how to read the stream either on the Chrome Browser end or better yet ChromeCast itself
So you mean other than streaming in a chrome tab and casting that tab, right? Cuz right now I can play a movie in chrome through vlc and that's how I cast my local media . all formats too but higher res does lag a lil bit

VLC Web Plugin
Does anyone know how to set VLC as the default extension in Chrome? Web searched and couldn't find the answer?
I downloaded the web plugin for Chrome Mac, installed it fine, and re-launched chrome.
Whenever I queue up a movie, it launches the Quicktime extension instead of Chrome extension.
Thanks!

VLC plugin is out of date. It doesn't even show up in chrome://plugins. That being said, VLC would need to stream to the DIAL protocol as that is what chromecast uses. In its current state, VLC will do no such thing.

Help with Chrome / ChromeCast

So not to hijack another thread, I thought I'd post my question here.
I am running a MBP and have an issue getting VLC Web Plugin extension to take over for Quicktime in Chrome.
I installed both VLC and the VLC Web Plugin from:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
However, whenever I load up a video in Chrome, it defaults to Quicktime.
There is no VLC Web Plugin in the extensions menu under preferences. Not sure where else to look to set default handling of media files in Chrome.
Thanks for your help!
The only extensions in the Chrome Store is VLC Youtube and VLC Remote.

[Q] Casting Photo Slideshow with Music?

Hey all,
Other than the Tasker/Autocast solution is any one aware of an solution that can cast a photo slideshow (ideally either from device or a media server and/or SMB share) whilst simultaneously casting a music playlist (again from device or a media server and/or SMB share).
I use another automation app and don't really want to go down the line of installing and learning Tasker just for this one use scenario. But I'd love to be able to have picture slideshows with music on the big screen.
Thanks.... :fingers-crossed:
Well I've found one other app that does this - CastonTV - but limited to media on device and a single music track. Not great.

complete newbie...what do i do?

Hi All
So I have spent the past hour or so going in and reading threads, but I cant find any newbie guides for idiots like myself.
Basically I have a chromecast, I got it almost a year ago. Ive barley used it as I don't find it much use. So I want to hack in to it. I have an ATV and Id like to do something similar with this if possible, load on sports channels, movie channels etc etc. And of course if anyone has any tips of anything else I can do with this gadget much appreciated.
If anyone could just post a link to a step by step guide I *should* be able to follow this, I just cant find any.
Thanks in advance.
Google's ever-expanding list of Chromecast-enabled apps is here: https://www.google.com/chrome/devices/chromecast/apps.html
There are many other interesting sources that can be accessed indirectly, but you'll really have to do some research on your own about each of them individually. There's no comprehensive guide. For example some internet video streaming sources can be accessed by running the app that accesses that source in Android, selecting the video player when prompted to be a Chromecast-enabled player like Avia, LocalCast, BubbleUPnP, AllCast etc., and then using that player to cast the video link to the Chromecast.
Or if you use Plex Media Servier on another computer, you can use the Plex client app to cast video from local files or Plex Channels to the Chromecast. Here's the guide to using Plex channels: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/categories/200109616-Channels

Web app

Is it possible to cast a website, as opposed to a video playing on a website?
For example, can I cast the plex web interface and browse it on my tv?
Thanks,
Andrew
You can cast the site via something like Vbukit, but interaction with it will be limited at best since there's no direct keyboard/mouse/etc
