unroot not working so well, help! - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I followed the steps over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491350 on how to unroot the phone, it went ok, sorta.. I got the SPL back to stock, and the rom but the phone will not upgrade to 1.5 and I do not have the *Settings>About phone>System Updates* option on the phone.. any ideas, or where can I get the 1.5 stock firmware to do it myself? tmo is sending me another phone, since the GPS isnt working on this one, and I need it back to send it to them

Dont worry
Don't worry about your phone not being up-to-date with cupcake if you are just going to send it back to T-Mobile. You really didn't even have to unroot it from what I have been hearing, but you took that step which can't hurt because now there is no way for them to "find out" and spank you.
Just send the phone back with RC29, whose to say that you just never upgraded....maybe you just like RC29...T-Mobile doesn't care. They care about the hardware problem your having (ie the GPS)
Good luck
BTW, if you really want to upgrade to RC33, I have it so you can PM me and I can send it to you. Once you have that, you will be able to invoke the search for updates command and upgrade to 1.5

Just like Direct said, it don't matter that you have cupcake on there. And last time I got a new phone it took about a day or 2 before I got the cupcake update. (just wanted to finally see what the stock looked like, needless to say it sucked)

I actually found the RC33 update on here somewhere and flashed it, it didn't go to cupcake, but oh well, they can have it like it is, Thanks for the help, as far as what caused the GPS to go out, who knows.. I am gonna blame it on my case, I read the threads on here regaurding magnets, I was using my old Wing case, which had the magnet clip on it.. Either way, wont do that with the new one they send

Here's a link to Cupcake on my mediafire account.

Does that guide work if your on the danger spl?

New to the Dream, questions! (and yes i searched for these first!)

what up yall! My ATT tilt died a few weeks ago (flex cable went bad, decided it was time to move on) so i got a G1 from my buddy that had a broken digitizer and LCD. ordered the parts online and got it put back together today. few questions though.... it seems that about the bottom 1/4 inch of my touch screen dosent respond....its brand new and the rest of it works fin...just the small strip that seems to not work. any ideas? also t mobile are assholes...i cant get them to unlock it but i will work on that one...im quite sure that answer is on here. Also...do i really need to get a data package or can i choose to keep my phone from constantly connecting and updating my gmail and other apps? thats the reason i continue to get HTC is because i think data plans are silly when everywhere in america has WiFI....i think thats all for now...and ive been a member on here for quite sometime but this android mess is totally different. lol. thank yall!
That 1/4" at the bottoms sounds like a bad digitizer. =/ *Most* likely not software. But you can check by flashing a new ROM and if its a software problem, the new ROM will override whatever was causing it not to work before.
You can get it unlocked for $20 from one of many unlocking websites, just google it. You can't get it free anywhere other than T-Mobile sorry to say.
You don't *need* a data package, I don't have one. There are applications that can disable your data connection except for when you need it (i.e. MMS). Or its a built-in widget with the Hero ROMs.
Unless you have a rooted ROM, you will be required to use your data to even use your phone for the first time as it requires you to sign in to your Google account, but doesn't give you the option to use WiFi. But honestly, I think this phone is crippled without a data connection even if you don't use it all the time, I'm currently waiting for my current plan to end to sign another 2-year contract with data. But its up to you, its certainly still usable with enough WiFi connection points.
darn....its not very fun to take apart...plus i have to wait even longer...im currently using an old school , non color green screen nokia probably digitizer and not some random flex cable along the lines? maybe the black one? i guess there wouldnt be any way to check without replacing. and im not real addicted to any apps or anything, just mainly want it as phone/organizer. im a studennt and have wi fi at the house and at school, and every bar i go to has wi fi so i think im covered =) just making sure i could regulate it so it dosent pull and jack my bill up. if i were to flash a new rom, wouldnt that unlock it....and can you still downgrade it to rc29 when you dont have a t mobile sim card....or rather is there any other way besides adp or should i just go ahead and learn how to use it...seems a bit intimidating to anything ive done on a WMo phone.
you can use apndroid to block data from being used accidentally
flashing a rom will not unlock the phone.
Yes you can downgrade to RC29 without a tmo card
mmmk. so rooting and flashing a HTC rom wouldnt do it? if im correct i either have to go through t-mobile or i have to pay like 20 bucks so i can use it with ATT?

I haven't tried it myself, but this thread tells you how to get around that.
note how that thread tells you to obtain root...

I meant get around not having a Data connection. Rooting is obviously not optional.

ah ok i figured he already found that or would.
sorry
You can root without data. Just activate wifi at RC29 when trying to sign in

Rooted ROMs usually have an option to just skip signing into Google don't they? I know they have that for Hero for sure, but I was pretty sure they implemented that to all the cupcake/Donut ROMs too no?
Basically, you'll only need to use that with RC29. And if you do need to sign in and don't wanna use the work around, I would just go ahead and use the data, its only a few KB of info I think (I've never actually measured it, but I very small amounts on my bill even if I do use it to sign in, also using ATT btw).

all ROM's based on adp (and most modded tmo) have the option to skip (at least im pretty sure)
He just wants to activate his phone without data, which would require him to get down to a root level rom (RC29)
after he logs in, he has the option to root or wait for the OTA update if he wants to stay stock
if he wants to try to use his data, he can try but it doesnt always work (it did for me at first, but not the next few times)
ok so update... believe it was a bad digitizer...sending it back monday for a replacement so a few more days without the new toy) I got it registered to my Gmail and everything, and im currently waiting on my unlock code, so that is squared away. now...new questions.....
1. can i not just uncheck the auto sync and all the other data options or do i have to run adp? to make sure it dosent stay connecting and updating my mail and apps?
2. what positives do i have with rooting/flashing? obviously most of you probably have gone that route, and i really enjoyed flashing with my Tilt and having the newest WinMo, but it was always at the cost of it either being buggy or somethings not working. i know this can be searched but i want the simple answer if yall dont mind
3. i also noticed that the only thing so far that dosent work, is the camera/camcorder. keep in mind i got this phone with a broken lcd/digi. so there may have been other problems but i couldnt tell untill the screen was replaced. could it be i put it back together and missed a cable/contact for the camera, or could it just be software related?
...for now i think thats all the problems i have stumbled across... Thanks you all you are making this very easy for a Android Newbie!

1. That would stop just contacts, calendar, and gmail not all of the other apps that come with the phone
2. Rooting is definitely worth it, loving my hero rom
3. If your on RC29 there is no camcorder, but if not then it's definitely a hardware issue, when I was on stock everything worked fine
Just FYI: the unlock code is phone specific, so if your getting a replacement, the unlock code wont work on that one if the code you got was for the other.
1) If you want to disable data, download and run APNDroid. You can turn off autosync if you want but data will still be used.
2) Rooting has lots of advantages. Themes, faster updates (i.e youll get the latest android before its released OTA) more modifications, use of certain apps such as Ad-Free, etc. cooked android roms are more stable than winmo cooked roms, and you have the option between stable/experimental
3) if it was stock, its probably a hardware error
so could i potenitally not have any apps and not have a data pull problem? or it seems as though just rooting and flashing to hero (would you all go hero, or newer 1.6 stock rom, or custom 1.6?) and ill be taking it back apart to send the bad digitzer back, so ill check the ol camera out. still is stock T-mobile 1.5....no rc29 or anything....yet...
if you still have 1.5, you can use the 1 click root
im using hero right now, but i switch between hero and cyan using the switchrom script
the g1 on stock android will still use data even if you have everything disabled. the only way to completely disable it is by changing the apns, or by disabling mobile data on a hero rom
what was wrong with the camera? give a little more detail so we know if it really is a hardware or software problem
Quiccest way to get unlock code..just tellem you are goin to the uk or sum and you are in need of unlocking since u will be on there network for a while.. Usually that works!

Little Problem here.....

THis is what happened...
Yesterday, my brother gave me his old Htc Dream, because he bought the Hero (that bastard)...i dont have Data Plan, my mother have a Blackberry Data Plan, i tried it on my phone, but it didnt worked...
Today i decided to make a hard reset to replace my brother's google account and use mine....after the reset, the phone asked for my Google Account, i provided the user and pass, but...well, as you have guessed:
no data plan = no validation of the account = locked phone
I have made some research trough the Net, and found some interesting threads, but, as you know, in order to by-pass this screen, i need to have installed RC29 or older....but my phone have RC30 or later...i can tell beacuse when i type <enter>reboot<enter> on the "Click ont he android" screen, nothing happens...so...im in trouble...
Any suggestions? It is possible to downgrade to RC29 and then root with the phone like this?
Thx for reading

It's been awhile since I've been on a hero build so I personally can't tell you, but every person has there own opinion on which one is the best. The best thing I can tell you is to try them out or wait for someone that uses hero and can tell you. I haven't used that guide but here is a great guide.
http://androidoverdrive.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7
and theres a couple other guides on the site to that you can look at to see which one you want to use.

Is the 1-Click Rooting still available for Dream/G1?

i've been all over this site as well as others trying to find a fairly simple way to root my T-Mobile G1, non-dev phone running Cupcake 1.6. It looks like the 1-Click Rooting will work but first, before i do anything, i wanted to see if this procedure was still working.
Is it?
When i d/l Cyanogen's Mod i noticed that it d/l the update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip version as well as the 4.2.7.1. Which one should i use?
It looks like the Radio is the same, so that would be one less step to perform, correct?
i'm attaching a .txt file which i've made so that things/steps are a little clearer for me to follow.
Any help would be appreciated. Have a great morning!
I am a total newb on the scene but from what I understand you can still do the one click root as long as you revert back to cupcake (RC7 for europe, RC29 for US? You will need to check). You can't do it on Donut (Which is 1.6 is it not?).
I might be way off, so hopefully someone more experienced can help you.
As far as the rest is concerned, I have no idea, sorry.
Sigh. i think you're correct -- i already have the 1.6 - Donut. Grrr.
Now i gotta figure out how to get back down to 1.5.
Thanks, zamtetsuken, that was a great help. Maybe i should just stick to the "If it's not broke, don't fix it." routine.
What advantages have you seen with your change to root?
Have a great afternoon!
You're most welcome.
I have been reading (and watching videos) from this website: http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-g1-dream/ today and they have videos that show you how to get back to cupcake, the 1-click root for the G1 and other good stuff.
I haven't actually done it yet, I am trying to do a lot of reading before I do try it, just so I don't mess things up. I know which rom I want to use but some methods require to have a SDCard reader when you're flashing the radio, rom etc, so I need to see if there is a work around as I do not have one. All I hear is good stuff about rooting though, apart from obviously those who brick their phone.
If you do it please let me know how you got on .
If you're running 1.6, part of one of the threads says that you can format your SDcard with your telephone! You don't need a card-reader. i don't have one either and am running PCLinuxOS 2009, fully updated on my home computer.
Have a great afternoon! and thanks for the link to the videos!

Yeah, I knew about the format option in 1.6 but in one of those videos once he reverts to cupcake (I believe) he takes out the SD Card while the phone is off and then puts the files on the card and then puts it back into the phone and switches it on. I will have to find out whether I can do it differently,
Thanks for the reply , you going to try it?

lol -- i'm working on it.
Am still trying to find an answer to a couple of questions, like will we have access to Market again? Whether i can set Google up with the kind of buy-as-you-go minutes that i have in Mexico through TelCel and wondering how i'm going to obtain all those WEP keys i've got on my present phone again.
Have a great evening!

I have successfully rooted my phone .
You do get access to Market again. It just seems to work exactly as before . I am not sure how you would get the WEP keys again .
Hey! Congratulations!!! Wow! i'm stuck on the "Set up Gmail." Since i don't have a 3G Plan i'm in the process of getting past STEP1, Sub-section 6 -- lol.
i'm going to call a friend - my son-in-law - and get him to read off the APN settings on his G1. i set it up for him and i think we use the same carrier, TelCel. i need the MCC and MNC settings - i think, in order to get WiFi on this. Then i can set up Google and proceed.
i also had some strange things happen even in Sub-section 4! But it's fixed, so we're still hangin' in there.
Thanks for posting again, Congrats!, and have a wonderful evening!

Thanks, guys, i'm rooted!!!

P.D. if anyone is interested in a .txt blow-by-blow, real life experience of how i got this thing working, let me know & i'll upload it or e-mail it to you.

[Q] Help wiping a phone used for ps3 jailbreaking?

Hi I hope this post is in the proper section of the forums, I am new here.
Several months ago I heard about ps3 modding via jailbreak. A few weeks later it was ported to htc hero.
I followed a guide here. I had never done anything with a phone, rooting etc nothing learned every single thing I know about phone modding from that ps3 guide.
Never really cared much to trick out my phone was only interested in running the ps3 stuff so I learned enough to do that but then stopped.
Flash forward 4 months later and my ps3 now has custom firmware so I dont need the ps3 stuff on my htc hero anymore and would like to lose it but dunno how.
Ever since I did the ps3 stuff my phone sucked, dropping calls, acting super laggy, and it resets(powers on and off) by itself sporadically. really annoying stuff. i put up with it for the ps3 but I no longer need it and tired of the consistent headache with my phone.
I cant recall everything I did to my phone in the guide I had it bookmarked here but alas the thread is missing. I was hoping to just retrace my steps backwards from the guide I had followed previously but i cant do that now.
So.... Im hoping someone can help me out here getting my phone totally back to stock (or better?)
I tried flashing a new rom awhile ago but that didnt solve the problem I still get the consistent problems and it wont let me download updates.
Part of the guide on the ps3/htc sprint guide stuff involved downloading/installing something that stopped the phone from doing updates over the air from sprint Id like to lose/deactivate this but I dont know how.
So... to recap... got a ton of stuff on my phone id like gone, not sure how to do it, the stuff relates to ps3 jailbreaking if that helps and i got it all from here many months ago.
Any help would be terribly appreciated, even like a link to a guide to follow would be nice frankly I dont mind digging deep into a guide and doin stuff myself but Im at a loss here even where to start.
you could try restoring the official 2.3 ruu that will revert u to stock and you wouldnt be rooted anymore first you need to download the ruu exe to a compter make sure you have the right htc drivers installed then u need to plug your phone into the computer and runn the ruu exe and itll start updating everything witch should take 10-15min. heres a link to the ruu thread further directions are in the thread i hope this helps

Downgrading from ZVA to ZV6 and rooting?

I'm recently new to this, just got a sprint G4 and I'm in Canada. It's supposed to be unlocked but it's not totally working, keeps trying to connect to sprint's data so I can only get 3G also can't send MMS. So I thought I'd try updating, see if that worked, it did not. I had updated to Marshmellow and it went askew and I couldn't get data at all then I downgraded to ZV6, fixed it so I could get 3G again then updated again. When ZVA came out I updated to that to see if it'd fix the issue but no luck. It's also very glitchy and bloated and tears through my battery though I've disabled most programs. So I'd love to try rooting or just the sim unlock fix or even ultrapop but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it.
As I said, I'm new to this and it seems like a lot of great work has gone into it all but it's not exactly simple, as much as I keep bouncing around trying to get a grasp, I simply can't figure out what to do to not destroy my phone. I see that there's the low effort root, but that's for ZV5 which I can't switch to since I'm now on ZVA. I see another person said they figured out how to root ZV6 but there's no simple instructions on how to do that either.
So my questions are,
1. Is it possible to switch from ZVA to ZV6 without damage and
2. is anyone able to provide simple instructions from start to finish on how to do so and then from there to root?
I know I'm not the only one here who's got this or a similar issue and I think many people would appreciate the instructions laid out for beginners. I realize there's more to it than just a simple, do this, do that, such as hitting road blocks and such but these can be figured out. If anyone can do this I'd be happy to donate what I can, as well, it seems like a lot of people want something similar but get too intimidated with all the nomenclature and end up unable to do it. Or maybe it's just me?
Oh, and, thank you to everyone here who's done all the work sorting out this stuff for the rest of us, even if I don't understand all of it, I appreciate how much work goes into it.
