For some reason y tilts only showing i can hold 205 pics more on my SD card, but i have just over 4 gigs free on my 8gb card.
We have 4 tilts and mine is the only one that is doing this. I threw in a blank 1gb sd card and it then shows over a 1,000 can be store.
took everything off my card and formatted it, then it showed i can store over 7,000. But i put my docs and stuff back on and its showing 205 again.
All three of the other phones are showing over 1,000's can be stored still. My wifes has about the same space used and available, yet she can store over 2,000 still. Any clues?
i could've sworn i replied to this post this afternoon...it must have gottem lost in the internets
anyway, assuming you have a card reader and a desktop/laptop running Windows 2000/XP/Vista, do a file system check AFTER copying your personal documents and files BACK onto the card. i suspect a file or set of files from your "collection" is causing your card to loose its marbles. the file system check SHOULD fix it.
alternately, you can try to copy back your data little by little until the problem shows up, and then you'll know which set of files was the problem.
my money is on the file system check approach!
good luck!
I think you are right. I did the "schedule boot time scan and fix" yesterday after i posted this and it didnt do anything. I ran it from the card reader on vista notebook. It took a long time and didnt show me a report, so i assume everything looked fine. But iduno. Is there somewhere in vista ultimate that will show me report of that scan? I was thinking along the same lines of it being some files having errors, but if the scan didnt fix it, i think your idea (though a long nasty task) of moving files onto the card one by one is the only thing i can do.
I found the report file right on the sd card, here it is.

I thought, maybe the camera is only seeing half the cards capacity, so, I decided to load the heck out of my card with mp3's. I got almost 2 gigs free on the 8gb card and the camera decides to tell me i can fit well over 5,000 photos.
To me it seems like, yeah, we can use up to 16gb cards in these phones, but the camera can only see 4gb at a time. Something weird like that.
Just as a test try changeing the default loaction from DCIM to My Pictures. "or reverse if already is"
Ok, just tried that and it didnt resolve the problem. I even took a picture to invent the directory.
In use 3145.47 MB and Free 4426.53 MB
And 639 photos can be store according to the camera. Differs from OP because i eliminated some mp3's.
Gotta be something to do with the allocated space or not seeing full capacity, i only got my 8GB card yesterday:
Card Size: 7768.81 MB
Free Space: 4147.98 MB
Camera shows that i have 118 shots available. "should be far more"
Ok so all i do is place a movie on and i get:
Free Space: 4073.43MB
Camera shows that i have 9410 shots available.
Now my assumption is that it works in 4GB slots.
carhigh:
Dump aload on phone till hit over 4GB and see if you then get full capacity?
Good, im not the only one with this problem!! I thought about getting my card loaded with junk just enough that i only had a few pics left (according to the camera) and take those pics and see if the counter resets when it goes to zero, the next pic after that. But it would be very tedious to get it loaded just perect.

all the investigation in this thread could very well point to an "overflow" issue in the camera application's remaining disk space calculation logic.
4GB of actual free remaining disk space may very well be the cut off point before the overflow occurs (perhaps the programmer(s) used a 32-bit counter, DWORD maybe as opposed to _int64 or ULONGLONG...the latter would allow the counter to count well beyond the 4GB point).
if this is indeed the case, it MIGHT have been fixed in one of the newer versions of the camera application.
all the same, a lame bug introduced by lame old HTC !!!

I just thought you was being crazy JK but i can see the logic as to why there is the problem and ASCIIker explains it well
To be honest i can live with it as if you kept taking pictures you would never run out, all that would happen is the counter would suddenly jump up, oh untill you hit the card phsyical limit

If your using the 5 series then 6 series would be but most don't have auto-focus, like said previous i wouldn't go to the hastle as it will just drop to 1 picture left then shoot up to 9000'ish lol, not tryed but i'd place my kidney on it
I guess this would be version 4? version 4.08 (build 30665)
Found version 5. Love updating stuff

Thanks. I got that installed on hers, and Nadavi_HTC_Camera_5_0_4_2915_00 on mine. Not sure whats different.
The only thing i am unhappy about is the naming of the images. With the old #4 version, you could set the pics so they were named by date. I cant seem to find it in these versions.

Quick little question here. I was playing music on my tilt last night and it started bogging down and operating really slow. The music started to get all choppy and was jumping around all over the place. Eventually exclamation points appeared next to pretty much all my music. I went in to look at my storage card to see what was wrong with the files and now pretty much everything on my memory card is gone. The only thing left on my card is inbox mail attachments. All my pictures/videos/audio/files/cabs are all gone. But, its still reading that my 2 gig card has only .8 gig left.
Basically 2 questions
1) Do I just have to bite the bullet and reformat my card now?
and
2) My background was a picture I took that was stored on my card. The image is still there but I can't find the photo. It's a very sentimental picture that I'm trying to keep. How would I be able to keep it?
any suggestions? insight?
I'm really taking a shot in the dark here but if windows mobile is anything like windows, it will store a copy of your background image in a system folder and use that for displaying the background. If this is the case, then you should be able to find a copy of it somewhere in the windows folder.. have you poked around at all?
As for the issue with your memory card, are you able to read it on your computer via usb? Or if you have a card reader, can you read anything off of it from that?

This may be a dumb suggestion, but if all else fails (to save your photo), you can uncheck all your today plugins, and take a screenshot, so just your photo would show.
Probably not ideal, but it was just a thought
there are many card, usb flash, sd, etc. data recovery / rescue apps.
they will find and recover anything--reformatted, deleted, whatever.
get one as soon as possible. and save to your PC

These usually only work if it is a quick format, (quick format just deletes the table) - so not really "anything"

He didn't say anything about a format, quick or otherwise. These programs are designed to read the raw data so if they're a chance there's something left on there, it's worth trying.
I know this is weird, or it might be just me not knowing much about this stuff, but here's what happened
Yesterday I was looking for a software for maps/navigation and ended up installing a free one (OsmAnd), and then procceeded to create the maps with Mobile Atlas Creator.
So far so good, I created a detailed map for my zone, consisting of around 95k tiles according to the program, which weighted around 440MB.
So I checked the free space on my SD Card and it said that it had 1.5GB free, so I proceeded to copy it. The thing is, it told me that I didn't have enough space. I thought it was an error, so I tried again, but it just wouldn't let me.
So I then went to check my SD Card and erased a lot of things that were there that I wouldn't need anymore, and I freed around 3.8GS worth of space, and tried again. This time, it did copy the files (which by the way, took bloody ages), and after it was finished, I checked the available space on the SD and it said that it had around 150MB free.
I can't help but think that something is awfully wrong, but I also thing this could be related to some sort of compression or something alike (I used both, a Mac with OSX and a PC with Windows 7).
What do you guys know/think about this?
Sorry I can't help with your problem.
But your in Alajuela Costa Rica? If so awesome I am in Jaco
Are you on kolbi? How's it working out for you?
It's probably because of the block size of the sd card. When you copy lots of small files (like you did) they will therefore take up a lot more space.
On 4GB cards I believe that the block size is larger than for instance a 8GB. that's my experience anyway.

Yes, I'm in Alajuela. And Kolbi, for me at least, is working just fine.
I'm getting like 950kbps download and 300kbps upload (which might suck for people outside CR, but it's quite awesome around here)

It depends on the partitioning of the SD card.
If you have it partitioned with big blocks and copying a huge amount of small files - yes, theoretically it's possible. How many files are we talking about?

Around 95 thousand XD
I guess that's it then.
Is there any way to change that?
I just ordered a new 16GB SD card, but if there's anything I could do to prevent something like this in the future, that would be great.
Only to change file system on the SD card to use smaller blocks (less wasteful, but more reads/writes and less performance), or use packed file format (pack all the small files into one bigger file - using tar/zip/whatever), or use compressing file system (it's going to be troublesome - NTFS supports that, but I'm not sure NTFS-formatted SD card will mount on Android, and it's also performance overhead).
The main trouble is that on 16GB card you're going to have those files take 4 times as much space as they did on 4GB card. Since these are very small files, each file is essentially a block - and the blocks grow in direct proportion to SD card size (using FAT32 and considering big cards). So by moving to 16GB card you're not gaining much.
Thanks for the answer.
The problem is mainly due to the fact that my current SD Card is only 4GB, and it's class 2, so I guess changing the partition for smaller blocks would indeed affect the performance.
Perhaps when I get my new 16GB Class 6 one that one will be a better choice.
I'll wait and see then.
UPDATE: Just saw you updated your post, so I'll update mine too.
I searched a little bit more on the dev's page and they warn about that behavior too. But they also indicate a way of creating a different type of file that the app also recognizes, that is like putting all the 95k files in one only file.
It's a bit bigger than the actual size of the 95k tiles (tiles were like 75MB, and the file is like 91MB), but I guess that this will alleviate the issue of it the file size skyrocketing when transferred to the SD Card.
Thank you very much for your explanation, it really helped me, at least it encouraged me to do some more research and find a solution to my problem.
Format with smaller allocation unit size...
( HTC Desire Android 2.2 )
I had the same problem with my card getting full because of the big
allocation size. 500MB of files, took all my space on the 2GB SD-card.
I copied the whole card to my computers harddisk, where it used 3.44GB
of space. (because of larger allocation size)
I formatted my 2GB SD-card to FAT32 with an allocation unit size of 512
bytes. I moved all files back to my SD-card, and I now have all my space
back, and my almost 2GB total filesize (before formatting), is down to 500MB.
I don`t notice any difference in the phones performance. I use a sea-map
app. that stores the maps on the SD-card, and it works perfect.
You might want to try a higher allocation unit size than I did, I just don`t
want to waste any more time copying to find out what size is ideal.
Exact numbers now:
52.362 files, 136 folders
Size: 500MB
Size on disk: 516MB
Total capacity: 1,86GB
Free space: 1,36GB
Backup size on PC: 3,44GB
Hope this helps!

Hi there!
I use a G1 with Super E mod.
apps2ext with a 512 mb ext partion for that.
I have about 60 apps installed, all working well.
now i installed the new opera mini and the message "few storage" poped up..
I uninstalled it, but the message didn't disappear.
Then I look it up: only 5 mb left
I removed some other apps, but as suggested, this didn't free up much space (~,5 mb), because of apps2ext..
I cleared my cache using nandroid, but still the same..
What is using all my phone space?
can I clean that up somehow?
Thanks!
Cholera
As you wrote, you have apps to sd, so most likely the app are not stored on /data, but on /sd-ext/...
Cleaning /cache will not help you, because it's almost unused. The problem you might have is, that internal space on /data is filled up, so try to clear all the application caches, especially browser, market, ....
This should free up some amount of memory and you should be able to install Opera Mini.
i ran into this same problem a couple of days ago. it was a difference of method to get this error however. my phone crashed after trying to open an app and then corrupted alot of my apps so i had to uninstall and re-install. i then found it was telling me i had low space. i cleared all my caches and checked which apps were installed on my phone and which on SD. however the only comonality is the Opera Mobile app. i too installed it when i got this error too. can this be a coincidence or not?
market cache: 450kb
browser cache: 200kb
opera mini cahce: 0kb
gmail storage : 800 kb
news and weather: 28kb
downlolad manager: 250kb
deleted these, but still have 7,8 mb free space..
had a look at /data:
du ./data -h : 47mb used
I had a closer look at the stuff and found:
13.1M ./com.opera.browser/lib
even if i dont have opera mobile installed, i also found
925.5K ./com.opera.mini.android
which i currently use...
removed the com.opera.browser .. 20mb free...
additional apps that use much space here:
# du ./ -h |grep M
1.5M ./com.facebook.katana
1.7M ./com.rovio.angrybirds
1.0M ./com.android.providers.contacts/databases
3.0M ./com.adobe.reader
17.5M ./com.navigon.navigator
these are large, but ok..
and this one:
899.5K ./com.android.packageinstaller/files -> i delete the tmpCopy.apk
now i have a bit of a breath.. lets see what we can delete from the system

im not sure about the loss of space, however you will not see an ext partition using windows as it does not recognise it. with some file explorers you can pick it up if im right. otherwise you have to use linux on the sd card to see the partition. it cannot be done via the usb mount
I thought it might be something like that. i'm a windows guy. mcse. but i know zip about unix/linux. lol. it doesn't make sense though to presumably make a partition on the card and then it takes from your internal space. so I don't see the point of partitioning your card. hence, app2sd seems useless. I cannot find an explanation anywhere of how it works. also, I have an incredible, what the hell is that 8gb of memory for. no explanation anywhere. it just sits there free. what is it for if it can't be utilized?

I cant understand why its taken up space on your phone tfor a2sd apart from when it adds the data files for the apps. the a2sd partition stores the apps on the sd card in a partition that it cons the phone into thinking is an internal section.
Where is the 8gb you are referring to? is it on the phone or the card?

exactly! there is 8gb free. well, 7+, but I don't know linux. so it's just a waste. i ended up reformatting my card and got the space back on my internal memory. can anyone explain that? using ultimate droid now. no themes. pretty simple. have used several rom's. no one can explain what the 8gb is for. not even verizon. or HTC.
the incredible has 750mb of internal storage. I can see that's for apps and OS. but there are 8gb of other internal memory that is free. wtf? I've been kind of ignoring it thinking it might be for future use or something, til I partitioned my sd card and realized it took from that 750mb space.
as far as i know it shouldnt have taken anything from that space at all. it should have done what every computer does and only create a partition on the card. thats odd. do you get any names for the areas that are free? like you would with a folder name.

thats what i thought. like i said, i know windows through and through. there was no indication of a partition anywhere. kind of bugs me. always heard linux was easy. still would like to know about that 8gb too. don't get me wrong, i love the droid, but the way memory and or storage works makes no sense at all
there is an app called root explorer on the market. its a paid app but it lets you explorer all the folders and from what i can see the ext partition is known as sd-ext. sdcard is the obv one. system is the rom or os as it were and if installed correctly (only know this from the G1(Dream)) the data folder is where it stores all the information and settings for the apps and system settings
have you checked your text messages? because those also takes up space too, even tho text messages are really small in size, but if you have a LOT of them without deleting them, over time they usually build up
I love my Windows Phone a lot. Everything about it is just great. Size of the screen, resolution, Music+Videos hub, Office etc etc.
But, there is an issue. A very serious one. Memory Management.
Recently, Nokia launched an exclusive N.O.A.V 3 FREE version for India for a limited time. I couldn't get it, in spite of being in India AND having a WP8. Why? Low Memory.
I wanted Asphalt 7, as it is really low priced (lower than Asphalt 5) but I can't get it. Why? Low Memory.
Tumblr is a great looking app. Lovely Live Tiles, but...BUT, at a cost. Memory.
I have deleted a lot many apps as I don't need them anymore or were just plain bad. But it has left a permanent mark on the OS. It has consumed space which a deleted app should release when deleted. But no. I still see the app name, with the memory consumed. So, those bytes are now rendered useless. Again, the same problem, Memory.
I would really appreciate any help to free those used bytes so that I can get on with my life and get better apps. I am now even scared to the extent I don't download apps I know I won't be using after a while.
What a gorgeous OS, what a great user friendly UI, how beautifully smooth and fast, but all comes down to one very basic and fundamental flaw. Memory.
And no, I am not hard-resetting my phone.
I thought asphalt 7 was available for 512mb devices...

Thanks,
I... *think* he means storage (not RAM).
I don't know what he means about "It has consumed space which a deleted app should release when deleted. But no. I still see the app name, with the memory consumed"; that part makes no sense. Deleted apps are removed and consume no storage on the phone. It's not even like "normal" Windows where installed programs occasionally don't clean up after themselves; the app manager on WP takes care of all installation and removal, and there's nothing left after it does so.

I was referring to memory and NOT RAM. And sorry, my bad, when I uninstalled the Bloomberg App, I still saw it in the Storage Check app consuming memory. But it isn't there today. I removed the Flikr Wallpaper app and it was gone in no time from the Storage Check app.
But, why isn't my Free Space increasing? It still says 1.5 GB free in spite of many apps removed. Also, there is a very mysterious 'Other' category eating up about 978 MB. And even Temp Files dont go all the way down to zero. If I say 'clear' to Temp Files when it is 500MB, after clearing its 388 MB.
I need to empty some space man.

Have you tried Shrink Storage App, and try to delete the search history.
Addition: IMO, if you are installing a large app and was interrupted and never continued the installation, the portion you initially downloaded remain on your phone. Its hard to remove that file.
FYI, that Other on storage is a windows bug.
Thank you,
"RAM" is Random Access Memory, and is commonly just called memory. If you want to refer to persistent storage, you should generally use another term. NAND (for NAND Flash, the type of storage used in phones), Flash, SSD, HDD (technically inaccurate for a phone but not confusing), or simply "storage" are all good options for what you apparently meant.
Most apps are tiny (less than 5 megs, often under 1 meg) and removing them will not affect your free space noticably. Larger apps should be more visible, though it may take a few minutes for the app manager to finish cleaning up after them. As for "Other", that's mostly stuff like the local email cache (reduce the number of folders you sync and how long you store mail for to reduce this value) and downloaded files and so on.
To be honest I will never buy a phone with less than 16GB storage, 8GB or even 4GB on WP8 is just a joke, Never had this problem with my WP7 Lumia.
The other storage issue is a problem which will hopefully be rectified in an upcoming update, Even with 32 GB on my Lumia I still have nearly 1GB other storage after using Storage Check/Clean up, I believe it is from uploading pics to Sky Drive and of course other temp stuff but it would be great to be able to free this space, Fingers crossed it will get sorted soon

Exactly, less than 8gb WP8 will be useless if other on storage will not be fixed.
Some news says that the other on storage will have an improvement on this coming GDR2 update, I doubt that it will be totally fixed, since they say that its just an improvement.
I think No, I did'nt use skydrive, but the other on storage, grew up to almost 1gb.
History on Internet Explorer/Search also contributes to the growth of the Other on storage, deleting history may free up a 100mb/wk on my WP.
Thank you,
My 521 has 8gb and still has like 3gbs of space left. I have a bunch of games and a couple of albums on the SD card.

OK, so I have no idea what happened. All of a sudden my space was used up. Which I thought was pretty strange. When I look in settings, I'm only using about half of what I have. However, the other half of my internal storage is just unavailable. My tablet knows how much space it has total, however adding up my used space does not yield a number matching my total space.
As long as everyone understands lol, can someone tell me how to fix this?
Anyone?

Try the app DiskUsage to see if what if anything is using up your storage.
Also try booting without a microSD in the tablet. I've seen it that a bad card caused this.
OK, so I downloaded disk usage. Apparently, 11 GB is taken up by Android. This seems strange to me.

Seems you used a different app. I meant the one by Ivan Volosyuk.
But if you have ES File Explorer or File Manager HD, they also can show you what's taking up storage down to the file level.
Either you have a lot of forgotten nandroids on there on some huge log files left over. Dig and drill down...
Ok, so I downloaded the one you meant. And this illustrates the problem to be system data. 11GB of it to be precise. What is in there for me to clear out? And where do I clear it from?

Are you rooted?
If not all the stuff in green is inaccessible to you. I'm running a debloated custom rom and my System section is about 9 GB. Your's is 12 GB (1 mib = 1050 kb roughly). Could well be that non-removable apps (aside from necessary system files) take up the difference. Nothing you can do about that without root.
But I see a pretty good chunk occupying media, especially your Android folder is pretty hefty. That is where your app data lives. The most interesting part is cut off in your screenshot. You got some game installed with a very large footprint in terms of cache. Check out the size of your Android/obb folder!!!! Mine is empty!
Swipe to the right in DiskUsage and check what's taking up the space. Pinch in/out to see details.
Man, this app is great! I'm so glad I discovered it for you
Move anything not crucial like pictures, videos to your microSD. Uninstall apps you don't use anymore, especially games.

Yeah I have root. I am running CyanogenMod on my tablet as a matter of fact. Was a real pita getting there thanks to Asus but I managed with help from XDA.
As for the Android folder, I checked it out, and I am an idiot. GTA San Andreas, KOTOR, Bards Tale. That's 7.5 gb right there. I didn't realize there was so much extra after the fact with them.
Thanks for the app suggestion. I am adding it to me toolbox.
