Hero Themes - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I got a quick question with hero themes, I read a lot on the forums that if you flash from xxx to hero or hero to xxx you have to wipe but I didn't know if that applied to hero-esque themes. I just hate wiping my phone and I understand there is the backup for root and mybackup pro but I rather not mess with that. I am running cyan 4.0.2 and want to use the HE-Aero 1.5 theme.
Any help would be appreciated!

Just try it... if you have problems wipe, then reflash. Nandroid is your friend.

If the theme zip is just the theme and not the whole rom then you dont need to wipe but if it is the full rom then you have to wipe, or you can try that fixed permissions thing, its a thread somewhere in the dev forum i think. if the zip is between 10-20mb then its just the theme and you dont need to wipe

Problems occur when flashing from a htc ROM to a Google based one.
If it's just a theme "update" and it's for your ROM then you shouldn't have to wipe.

How to upgrade rom after I applied a theme?

I don't really understand the way themes work. Do they just replaced some of the resource files? Or do they replaced some of the apks? Then How do I cleanly remove a theme? Just flash the same version of ROM back? Won't there be some files only belong to the theme itself still left in the phone?
And what will happen when I try to upgrade the Rom with a theme installed? Will it roll back to the original theme, as all the resource replaced with the new Rom? And if I still want to use this theme, just flash one with the new version?
I am just confused, will themes add files not belong to the rom itself, then just upgrade or reflash without a wipe might not be able to clean the theme. But a wipe is the last thing I am gonna do.
Right now, I am using CM 4.01 with Teds Hero Theme, and I really want to upgrade to CM 4.02, but these questions confused me for a long time, I just need a positive answer, then I can flash and move on.
Thanks
A theme has modified images and files of the rom. when you flash a theme it writes over the original files with the edited ones. you should be ok with flashing cm 4.0.2 then flashing the 4.0.2 version of your theme.
If you are really curious what all a theme changes just open up your theme and look at what files are in it.
plain jane answer to your question.
make a nandroid backup (that way if something does go wrong you have a stable version to go back to if you are not ready to wipe to fix it)
flash cm 4.0.2
flash 4.0.2 version of theme.
if nothing goes wrong then you are good
Thanks for the reply, I'm going to give it a try~

Easiest Way to Flash Back to CyanoGen Mod Stable Version (1.4.1?)

I flashed to the CyanogenMOD 4.0.4 ROM then flashed in Ted's Hero theme for that rom and then all hell broke loss. My phone is suddenly unstable. To get back to the original 4.0.4 rom do i just wipe and then load it on again?
Also, any reason why a theme should make the phone unstable? It thought that all the theme really did was to replace some of the system images.
Thanks

Well I'm not really sure why in the world you would be using a CM ROM with version 1.anything... The most recent ROM is version 4.0.4. Now if you flashed his recovery image version 1.4 that is not a ROM and a theme will mess with a ROM it was not built for. If you really are using his ROM version 1.4.1 then Ted's hero theme is built for version 4.0.4 so yes you will run into lots of issues.
Yes, just wipe and reflash.
Also questions belong in Q&A.
Title should say 4.0.4? build not 1.4.1. sorry about that.

Did you wipe before you flashed CM 4.0.4 and the theme? You shouldnt have to but it might help resolve any issues. You also might want to reformat your ext partition.

try the wipe first, make sure you have the update.zip on the root of your sd card, then use the good old power off then hold home and power button and flash the update
I wiped before the 4.0.4 ROM install yes. obviously not between the 4.0.4 and the theme.
All i'm really wondering is to get back to 4.0.4 can i just wipe and reload? Wipe essentally clears the phone of anything that was on it correct?
wiped and reloaded 4.0.4 build, worked like a charm...thanks guys for help. quick side question...just need a short answer...is installing the stable hero rom that is floating around as easy as the cyanogenMod? or is it much more complicated?

You need to have the newest radio and Haykuro's Special SPL installed to run any Hero ROM. once that is on it is just as easy to flash a hero ROM. If yo install the new SPL make sure to follow the instructions exactly to avoid bricking your phone.

Theme help please

If i flash another theme will it delete my old theme?
I have a similar question that I hope someone can help me with.
I installed a theme which I no longer like. I prefer to use the stock Cyanogen theme. I have upgraded to Cyanogen 4.2.6 and the theme is no longer there however icons from the theme are still on my phone. I have done a wipe and it still did not help. How do I restore the Cyanogen icons?

did you wipe your ext partition? i am guessing, no. boot into recovery, wipe your phone, wipe your ext partition, apply the recovery image that cyanogen gives you BEFORE YOU APPLY THE ROM. THEN ONCE YOU HAVE INSTALLED THAT RECOVERY IMAGE, FLASH THE ROM.

[Q] Flashing SuperBad CM5 V.1.7 Question?

Right now I'm running Cyanogen's 5.0.8 ROM. When flashing to SuperBad CM5 V.1.7 (which is based on CM 5.0.8) do I still need to wipe? If so do I wipe data/factory settings, battery stats, delvik, ext.? I have a theme called Slide Blue (which is made for 5.0.8), will that work as well or is there even a need for it? And finally when I go to Android Spin to look at this ROM to download, it only gives me one link to download, so does that ROM also contain Google Apps? I have only flashed one ROM and Im still a noob in the learning process.

Make a nandroid. Flash without wiping, then fix apk uid mismatches in recovery and then reboot. wait 10-15 minutes.
If it works then congrats. If it doesn't either restore the backup or wipe.
Like I said, I'm still pretty new to this
So I don't understand when you said to fix the apk in recovery?

stick with cm7 because a noob like you would simply not know how to partion a sd card with out destroying it, for the sense experiance http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970459 install this theme via theme chooser engine and install go launcher than install go launcher sense theme for the dock. done
Why are you making multiple threads? Learn to read and search.
The fact that you said CM7 with Sense tells me you are an absolute noob that has done ZERO research into anything.
Learn to search... read.. and stop making multiple stupid threads.

i already search wiki, and d android development for this device...
im just confused....
i already partition my sd card... so where do i put the rom? is it on the ext3 format or on the fat32 partition... im currently using 2gb, 1gb for ext3, 1gb for the fat32...
dont get mad on me
im just confused...
thaks anyway....
You don't need to partition the SD card.
Just read... if you can't figure it out then please go buy an iPhone. Its insanely easy if you just read.

you dl the rom to your sdcard, it will be put in your "download" folder or you can dl to pc and copy to sdcard "download" folder. Follow OP on when to run alignment tool. It also gets dl to download folder. You need to wipe all including system before flashing.
MAKE A BACKUP OF PHONE (NANDROID) AND OF YOUR SDCARD FIRST
You don't need to go to bootloader to flash--it can all be done thru CWM
I use Amon so not up on CWM anymore
But it would be good to read a lot first by googling things like flashing roms with CWM and read the Runnymeade thread carefully for tips/info
ken
thanks sir!! REALLY appreciated it...
question sir...
if anything goes wrong(wish me not) while upgrading... or if the new rom i updated stock on X icon or in cynogenmod circling arow...
if my phone dumped me... just in case...
i'll just wipe dalvik cache, wipe data, then restore the back up rom
is that correct?
and for updating rom... do i need gapps like on my old phone milestone...
thanks!!
FYI. CM and Sense will never go together. CM is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and Sense is its own thing. There is nothing that combines both of them because they can't be combined. You can get widgets and themes that mimic the look of Sense on CM, but none of the underlying framework will exist.
