[Q] Yahoo email - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, prior to rooting I was able to get my yahoo account setup using the email app. Since, it constantly states my ID or password are incorrect, which they are not.
Did I miss something - does this not work with my changes? Is there a setting i need to change on Yahoo to allow the G1 to connect? Just not sure what changed....

Same here.. on cyanogen rom too.. and same with my dads phone and a friends.. Im wondering if its rom specific or what?

2. SMTP Server field: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
* Port: 25
* Security type: TLS (if available)
1.

* The device searches for outgoing server information.
2. Note that account options display and allow you to select how often to check for e-mail, set notifications, and check default setting account.

No problem at all, see I can answer some questions without being a smart @ss.

haha, yeah... going back and reading some of your other posts (and should I know as much as you), I'd probably be more of an a$$ than you. Thanks for the help man.

I try not to be an @ss but I joke around alot, but to some people I prolly seem to be a complete @ss. If you heard me talking to any of my people you would think we really hate each other, but hey thats just how we talk.

Exchange 2007 Push Mail w/ tons of extras! - NOW WITH POP3 AND IMAP ACCESS!

Ok, here's the deal. I've started an Exchange 2007 server that I've been offering for very low rates to the users of this forum. Specially the Hermes users, although other people have managed to find their way to the Hermes forum. Long story short, now that I have a Kaiser, I am re-posting the thread here...also the previous thread is getting VERY long and I hope to open up new information here, because new people just don't want to read 57 some odd pages .
If you want an account, I will require a $5 monthly donation to setup an account (this will be done through a subscription and paypal). I feel this is a fair amount for whoever wishes to donate. I will keep the old link for those that wish to donate above what I already ask for. After you submit the donation, I just need everyone to send me all their information in THE BELOW FORMAT:
First Name:
Last Name or Initial:
E-Mail address requested: [email protected]
Alias: [email protected]
Password:
It will include an alias and Outlook anywhere access (use Outlook with this account). With each account you can have an alias setup so that your recipents see your email address as anything you like! (although this has to be a working e-mail address, e.g. [email protected]) Also, for an extra $5 per account I can automatically forward your pop3 or IMAP e-mail to your new exchange account.
Go to http://getztek.com/paypal.html to make your donation. If and ONLY if that URL doesn't work for you (some have reported problems) use http://getztek.com/paypal2.html
The Outlook Web Address is now https://mail.getztek.com/owa/.
So if you like the service and feel that you can contribute, please send paypal payments to [email protected]. Anything helps, even if it is just $1.
If you do not know what Exchange 2007 is or offers, please google it before making any decisions about e-mailing me.
Also, please give me at least 24 hours to set up your accounts once I receive your information. Usually it will be far less than 24 hours. Thanks.
MOST IMPORTANT: do NOT e-mail me directly. All communications about Exchange 2007 must go through PM. If I receive an e-mail I will simply ignore it. This is done to simplify everything. When I have to spend extra time to figure out if you e-mailed me or PMed me, it just slows me down and e-mail's are easier to lose. Thanks for your cooperation.
Here's the setup info...I feel it's pretty thorough, but if anyone wants to add anything just let me know.
Setup on Outlook 2003/2007:
If you have an existing Outlook profile, follow steps 1-4..otherwise skip to the next section. These steps are for XP based machine. If you have Vista it will be similar but not exactly the same.
1. In Outlook, go to File --> Import and Export --> Export to a file --> Personal Folder File (.pst) --> click on the root folder in this window and choose “select subfolders” --> Click Next --> click browse and choose a location and file name for your .pst file. I suggest the desktop. --> Click Finish --> Click OK.
2. Let Outlook finish exporting your data. This make take anywhere from 1 minute to 30-45 minutes depending on how much data you have (e-mail’s, contacts, calendar).
3. On your XP Machine, go to Start, Control Panel.
a. Make sure your Control Panel is set to Classic View (Upper left hand corner of the window). If it says “switch to Category view” then you are good, but if it says “switch to classic view” then you should click it.
4. Double click on the Mail Icon within the Control Panel.
a. Click on “Show Profiles”
b. You should see your profiles here, most people will have one one and it will be called “Outlook.” THERE IS NO NEED TO REMOVE THIS!
c. Click “Add” --> Type in a Profile name (e.g. Exchange 2007) --> Then proceed to step 1 below.
-----
1. If using Outlook 2007, At the prompt where you choose manual. If using 2003, ignore this part and proceed to the next step.
a. add a email account and choose Microsoft Exchange.
2. Microsoft Exchange Server: server.getztek.com
3. Username: Full Name given at Signup.
4. then hit More Settings
5. then click on Connection
6. then click on "Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP" and then click on "Exchange Proxy Settings"
7. then type in mail.getztek.com for the URL
8. make sure SSL is checked
9. click on fast and slow networks, and choose basic authentication
10. Click “OK” twice
11. Then click Check Name

15. Server Name and User Name should now be underlined.
16. Congratulations! You are finished!

5. Domain = getztek.com
6. Password = ****
7. Exchange server = mail.getztek.com

10. It should now work!
Outlook Web Access URL:
https://mail.getztek.com/owa
POP3 Access Through Any POP3 compatible program/phone/device
Incoming and outgoing mail server: mail.getztek.com
username: if e-mail is [email protected] then "user" is the username.

Incoming server requires SSL (Port 995)
IMAP Access Through Any IMAP compatible program/phone/device
Incoming and outgoing mail server: mail.getztek.com
username: if e-mail is [email protected] then "user" is the username.
Outgoing server requires Authentication
Incoming server requires SSL (Port 993)
did anyone actually pay for this? i had started one cpl of years back and everyone wanted freebies, so i gave up. good luck.
I had a quick look through the thread in the Hermes forum and it seems like quite a popular service. Can I ask what kind of connection it's running from? Also, the alias thing interests me a lot and would make it so much more useful than the mail2web service I'm using right now. How does that work exactly?
I currently use DeniaL's service and it's been great. I started using it with my Wizard, then my Hermes, now my Kaiser. Very little downtime and worth the $5 I spent on having an alias that I can now use for my work emails.
I do like having push & html emails. Having the 'remote wipe' function from Outlook Web Access could come in handy if I ever lose my phone.
I too use his service it works like a charm for me.

It's running from a FAST dsl line in my office. The alias is basically a way of tricking people receiving e-mail from you. Basically the e-mail client will show whatever "alias" you want, but the actual e-mail gets sent through Exchange. So if you have a gmail account, and you want people to see and reply to said account...then you can just forward your gmail e-mail to the getztek account and it creates a full circle of PUSH mail with WHATEVER e-mail address you want.

That's the basic jist. It's just a trick so that when people hit "Reply" it goes to your alias address instead of the getztek one. It's not super complicated.
Ah right. I was thinking it was something crazy where it somehow shows mail as coming from the alias, rather than just replying to it. I was wondering how such a setup would avoid spam filters and such.

Any comments on how much we can use up? 1 gb? thx
Noob question - so this will allow those of us who currently use BIS (through blackberry connect), to enjoy the full benefits of BES?
I'm on board with DeniaL and it works great on both my Treo 750 and my 8925.

I'm not super familiar with Blackberry's as I don't particularly like them. But if you can configure a blackberry with Exchange access (I think you can through your carrier's website), then you can use this service. It is true push, usually takes 3-5 seconds to receive the e-mail, obviously dependent on the speed of your wireless device.
I'm very interested in this - but was just wondering what sort of battery life people get while using the Push Email service?
I'm specifically wondering about anyone that's using 3G for their data settings, as ideally I'd like to have emails coming in and still be able to make/recieve calls!
Is the Kaisers battery able to last for a day (16-18 hours between charges) while recieving/sending Push emails on a 3G data signal with the odd occasional call?

I've been using 3G on the tilt since i got it, and the battery life isn't great, but I get through the day with about 15% juice left around 8 or 9 pm. I usually unplug the phone around 8am. I use the device for lots of phone calls and I play a lot of monopoly while waiting for things, so I would think the battery should last 16-18 without those two factors.
Don't forget that discharging and charging the battery will condition it somewhat. These phones are pretty much brand new (especially the Tilt), so battery life will improve to a certain extent over time.

tytn2 imap gmail

I recently flashed my kaiser with the latest duty rom. After that i try to setup a imap gmail account.
The problem is that i can recieve mail, but when i try to send it gives the error :the message(s) could not be sent.Check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. Then try sending again
I checked / dubbel checked the imap settings from gmail, but nothing seems to work.
(if i try to setup pop3/smtp everything works fine)
Is there anybody who can help me ?
I think it comes because WM6 wants to automatic set some settings.
Try the following:
Create a new imap account.
By the email adressfield put something like. [email protected]
Fill in all the other fields but remember to select imap4
When finished go back and edit the account with the right settings.
I had to do this with my own phone to get it working
have you enabled imap within your gmail settings at mail.google.com?
have you set the SSL settings to yes?
Tom , yes i enabled imap on the gmail setting, and yes i checked the ssl setting ( i cant change anything, only set the V )
@AAthesource : i tried this already, this is the only way to setup gmail with imap, otherwise the setting are automaticly set tot pop3 etc

I've had this problem with WM6.0 (Dutty's RTM4). The issue seems to be the ssl certificate than GMail sees fit to change every now and again. The SMTP info doesn't seem to change in the registry. Even with account deletion and re-add with the same name doesn't seem to fix this. I usually have to delete the account and then add with a different name.
Does anyone know where the fsck Pocket Outlook et al store the account information and especially cache certificates and passwords?
James
this would be nice if there's a solution !Hope to see it soon
I think you might be using the wrong information. The server isnt mail.google.com, its imap.google.com .
WM6.1 will automatically fill in settings, so you have to start off by making the address [email protected], then after you are done you can go back and correct that address. Here are the details from google's site. (remember to put the wrong address the first time around)
1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.
2. Open the Start menu and select Programs > Messaging > New E-mail Account.
3. Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') in the E-mail Address field.
4. Uncheck the box to get settings automatically from the Internet and select Next.
5. Select Internet e-mail as your email provider in the drop-down menu.
6. Enter your name as you want it to appear in sent emails.
7. Enter a descriptive name for the email account and select Next.
8. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the Incoming Mail Server field.
9. Select IMAP4 as the Account type from the drop-down menu and select Next.
10. Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') and password.
11. Select Next.
12. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server field.
13. Make sure that the Outgoing server requires authentication box is checked.
14. Select the Advanced Server Settings link.
15. Make sure that the Require SSL box is checked for both incoming and outgoing emails.
16. Select The Internet as the network connection from the drop-down menu.
17. Select Done and then Next.
18. Select how often you want your phone to send/receive emails from the drop-down menu.
19. For more download options, select the Review all download settings link.
20. Select Finish.
Click to collapse
My notes on these steps:
1. Ignore
3. Use a made up non @gmail.com adress the first time.
4. There is no check box in 6.1
12. I used imap.gmail.com for my outbound and it works great.
21. Menu > Tools > Options > Gmail Account > Fix Address to correct @gmail.com
@Pops_G it works for me now thanx !
i replaced smtp.gmail.com with imap.gmail.com and it works
is this a long term fix?
@ the cosmic gate & pops_G, is changing from smtp to imap.gmail really a long term fix?
I've found that erasing and re-creating the account will work until they change certificates again.
Going into my options and just switching outgoing to imap.gmail.com didn't fix it for me.
I had to erase my account from the phone and enter it again to work, using imap.gmail as the outgoing. However, I'm not convinced this fixes anything since re-doing it with smtp.gmail also would work until they change the security again.
So, will that not happen if using imap.gmail for outgoing?
Or does any of this really make any difference at all?
@Dishe, I really doen't know if this is a long time fix.But at this moment everything works fine for 1 month.
The only problem is that sometimes its not possible to send a mail.
It's really strange, but for example if you wanna send 4 mails, just 1 e-mail (adress) gives problems
I had it working fine in this 1999 rom but didnt seem to work with the hybrid. I also dont like how imap deletes the mail from the server when u del it off the phone. I just set it back to use pop. Only problem I saw with pop before was everything sent ends up in your inbox.

That's silly. You can set it to move trash to server trash instead of delete off server. Then, the message still exists on the server in "trash" until you empty it.
Also, at least with gmail, "delete" only removes it from the inbox. It still exists on the gmail server, but its not in any folders, they just sort of float around until you move them into the trash folder or assign them to another folder.
You can see this by viewing "All Mail" and filtering out the inbox, etc, to just show you messages without any category.
The only real reason to use POP these days is if your mail server does not support Imap. Imap is superior in every way...
It's not silly I don't want want my phone moving or deleting anything. I just want to view new emails. That's what gmail is about. Archiving mail and not having to delete anything. If it moved it to the archive I would be fine with it. I also don't my message in limbo with the "deleted" status.
it works for me for 3 weeks now, but sometimes there's a problem when i try to reply.
If i made a reply to some adressses, it says that its nog possible to send (something with network coverage).I know for sure that the mail adres is 100% okay .
Someone with the same problem ?Or maybe a solution?
is there nobody with the same problem ?Or somebody who can help me ?
nope, works fine for me. Sounds like you have a totally different problem. Ask google support or perhaps someone on their forums.

Does anyone know how I can get 2 hotmail account on my mail tab? Currently I can only use one and if I want to goto my other account I have to switch accounts through windows live.

Don't use Windows Live...
Create an account but trick it
Instead of typing in [email protected] which redirects you to use Windows Live, type in something like [email protected] or something wierd. It will take you to the manual setup wizard.
Follow the Wizard Prompts and enter these where appropriate:
Incoming Mail Server: pop3.live.com
Outgoing SMTP server: smtp.live.com
(check Server requires Authentication and "use same name/pw for sending")
-Under Advanced Settings, check both Incoming/Outgoing SSL options

Great information. Thanks for the help.
The messages do not seem to have the same status as the hotmail versions.
ie. If i have read the message already, it still shows as unread when it arrives at my phone.
Is there a way around this??
Also, can the device be set to auto download images when it gets the message?
(I have unlimited data tarriff so am noth worried about size.)
Thanks.
Great solution for Windows Live/Hotmail Users!!!!
This is wonderful, especially since I track multiple Live/Hotmail accounts ... and no more dependency on Windows Live!
Woo hoo!!!!!
this is awesome, lol, great info, thanks so much

How to Hack Basic Yahoo Mail to Work on Android

Yahoo does not give you free POP access like most other providers do. This poses a problem for Android users.
You have 2 choices; you can either pay Yahoo $20 a year to enable POP access or try this hack.
You must follow these steps in this order exactly for the highest probability of working.
1. Turn Wi-Fi off (I know...crazy right? It will NOT work if you don't)
2. Go to the "email" icon
3. Click "Menu" then "Add Account"
4. Enter email address ([email protected])
5. Enter your password in “password” field
6. Select "Manual Setup"
7. Select "imap"
8. In the "username" field enter your [email protected]
9. In the "password" field enter your password
10. In the "imap server" field enter the following imap.mail.yahoo.com
11. In the "port" field it will probably already say 143 if not then enter it there
12. In the "security" drop-down select none
13. The "optional" field should be left blank
14. Select "next"
15. You may be prompted to sign in here. If so, do so.
Then you will be taken to the SMTP setting screen
1. In the "smtp server" field enter smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
2. In the "port" field it will probably already say 587 if not then enter it there
3. In the "security type" drop-down select none
4. Ensure "Require sign in" is checked
5. Click "next"
6. Wait until the device starts showing email
7. Turn Wi-Fi back on and enjoy
*This is NOT guaranteed to work but it worked perfectly for me
**I do NOT recommend using Yahoo for anything but, if you are like me you have an account you set up years ago and would like for your device to retrieve it too.
That will work fine whether wifi is on or off.
The only thing you're doing is that you are using IMAP instead of POP3.
And FYI: Yahoo *DOES* give you free POP access.
Really.
And no, they do NOT charge you for it.
Go into your yahoo mail and press options --> pop access and forwarding. Check the radio button that says "Web & POP access", then press "save".
The server is "pop.mail.yahoo.com" SSL port 995
smtp is at "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" SSL port 465

You do NOT need "Plus" or any kind of weird upgrades.

A perfectly FREE yahoo email account comes with FREE POP3.

You DO NEED to upgrade to Plus, just checked on my .com email. The new ones ( .co.uk ) come with free POP3
Geeze, It depends
Depends on when you got your Yahoo account. Old ones DON'T have free pop...proof. Both answers are right. It does and Does not provide free pop.
Add or edit an account
POP & Forwarding
Upgrade to Mail Plus so you can:
* download your Yahoo! Mail in an email client, such as Outlook
* forward your Yahoo! Mail to a different address
Simple solution: GET A NEW ONE.
Why do people still insist on using Yahoo! Mail? It's ancient. Jeez, time to start transitioning to Gmail or something. I know you like your address, but you will need to do it sooner or later.
I prefer to use imap
Thanks Shagge, I prefer to use imap rather than using yahoo mail app, which consumes extra memory.

Yahoo does not give you free POP access like most other providers do. This poses a problem for Android users.
You have 2 choices; you can either pay Yahoo $20 a year to enable POP access or try this hack.
You must follow these steps in this order exactly for the highest probability of working.
1. Turn Wi-Fi off (I know...crazy right? It will NOT work if you don't)
2. Go to the "email" icon
3. Click "Menu" then "Add Account"
4. Enter email address ([email protected])
5. Enter your password in “password” field
6. Select "Manual Setup"
7. Select "imap"
8. In the "username" field enter your [email protected]
9. In the "password" field enter your password
10. In the "imap server" field enter the following imap.mail.yahoo.com
11. In the "port" field it will probably already say 143 if not then enter it there
12. In the "security" drop-down select none
13. The "optional" field should be left blank
14. Select "next"
15. You may be prompted to sign in here. If so, do so.
Then you will be taken to the SMTP setting screen
1. In the "smtp server" field enter smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
2. In the "port" field it will probably already say 587 if not then enter it there
3. In the "security type" drop-down select none
4. Ensure "Require sign in" is checked
5. Click "next"
6. Wait until the device starts showing email
7. Turn Wi-Fi back on and enjoy
*This is NOT guaranteed to work but it worked perfectly for me
**I do NOT recommend using Yahoo for anything but, if you are like me you have an account you set up years ago and would like for your device to retrieve it too.

Hello today I released an unofficial version of freepops for android root device!!
http://nvhs.wordpress.com/project/freepops/

[Q] Help with Yahoo email please?

I have just rooted my phone to Gingerbread, and I just LOVE it. I was able to set up the gmail accounts easily, so I have two separate gmail "labels" on my phone, each one for a different gmail account. I still cannot get the message count to show up on my notification bar, however, but that's not the reason for this post.
I am trying to do the same thing for my yahoo accounts (I have two of them). Yes, I can download the yahoo widget/app and that puts yahoo pretty much live on my phone - but I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for the shortcuts, like Gmail, so I can click on them and it takes me to a brief list of emails etc. I don't want to have full access to yahoo on my phone, but just the shortcuts.
When I try to set it up, this is what I do:
1) put a shortcut to the Email icon on my screen and name it.
2) When I try to configure it, I put my yahoo user name (xxx at yahoo.com) in and password
3) the message that comes up is "Mailbox access is not supported for some times of yahoo mail accounts" etc. I click on OK
4) it tells me setup could not finish as there is an incorrect username or password. I am 10000% certain I enter the correct name and password.
5) if I try a different yahoo email account, I get the same error message, plus (530 Access Denied: need SMTP privileges to access this server).
I used to have yahoo email shortcuts on my phone before I rooted - and they were great. I had two icons, and the message count showed up in my notification bar. When I rooted first (to I guess AOSP 9.9.2, before gingerbread), I could get the yahoo mail icons to work, no problem. I was not able to add an account in the "accounts and sync" - that only offers me "google" or "corporate" (which I guess is exchange). It's only with gingerbread i am having this problem.
I am VERY basic when it comes to using the phone, so if anyone responds, please pretend I'm about four years old, so please explain in basic language what I need to do. Anything complicated, and I might not follow (sorry). Still a newbie.
Thank you everyone.
This has been a problem for me on some roms too. Including aospCMod, some will let you set up a yahoo account and others will not. I first noticed this when I switched from cm6 to aospmod awhile back. Cm6 would let me sign in to a yahoo account but aosp would not. Then about 2 updates later on aospmod, I could all of a sudden sign in.
So this leads me to believe its an internal setting that the dev can modify to fix this. What it is idk, and when it'll come for or gingerbread roms idk, but take comfort in knowing your not the only one who has come across this.
Its kind of weird really, hopefully someone else knows why this happens out how to fix it.

Try using K9 mail, it is free in the market and much better than Yahoo mail app. I am sure you will be able to get emails and such, but not sure how much it will help with the other widget type problems.

Are you setting up manually or automatically. I've always had better luck setting up manually. If so you have to make servers say:
Smtp.mail.yahoo.com
IMAP..mail.yahoo.com

Finally - this worked doing it manually with these settings! Thanks!!
Unbelievable!!! Yes! It worked!
thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!!
did this manually and it worked like a charm! Thank you - hope it's OK if I go and post this on the android forum - a few people are having the same issues there. THANK YOU!
I tried this manually and it didn't work. Said it couldn't conner to the server.
Does the port need to be changed?
I must be doing something wrong if others are getting it to work.
edit: it tells me unable to open connection to server

My port says 143 but turn security is off if I remember. I will check when I get home from the second job.

Make sure you make it an imap account, security set to none, port should change to 143. If that doesn't get it let me know. Try auto setup too. I just deleted mine and started over and it took that way.

Just bear in mind I'm not on GB. Tried it and don't care for it. Sense has everything I need with half the apps to dl so it could be the build you're running.

Yahoo doesn't work any more :-(
Strange. yesterday, I set it up and it worked like a charm - IMAP and smtp, changed the server settings (did it all manually) - worked very well yesterday and today was working just fine. Hadn't checked my emails for a few hours though - just tried - and it tells now incorrect user name or password. I deleted it and tried to add the yahoo account again - first it tells me unable to open connection to server. Tried again (making sure all settings were correct) and it just says incorrect username or password.
Under IMAP server I have imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 143, security type none - exactly like I had it yesterday and this morning, and it doesn't work. incorrect username or password.
I haven't changed a THING with my phone - not a single thing - or downloaded any new apps - so I'm mystified. Thoughts anyone?
Thank you

Mine did the same last night after a nand restore. I deleted account and did auto setup and that worked. Try that and manual again. Must have been a glitch

Yahoo email problem - resolution below
Thanks again to xda developers (a different thread) - this is the set up if you want a link to your yahoo mail on your phone: The previous one stopped working - here is the resolution. THANK YOU EVERYONE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11578143&postcount=7754
This method is no longer working... says "setup could not finish, Username or password incorrect. ()"
Edit, found out the port changed...
# Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
# Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
# Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
# Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL)

I was just gonna say the same thing.
I finally got mine working when I saw this post in the gingerbread thread also.
Sorry. Like I said, my phone doesn't like GB so I didn't realize it used different ports. This setup works on froyo and stock.
