Missed Calls when connected to GPRS Internet - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Have any of you guys come across this problem with your X1...I was connected to the internet via GPRS earlier this afternoon doing a little browsing and have now received 3 missed call notifications which were made during my browsing.
Does the phone not receive calls when connected to GPRS...very annoying.
I'm using the Touch X 10.1 rom by Smaberg but don't think that is the problem...any ideas!!!

some phone operators with older hardware in their end don't support call and gprs at the same time
not really a phone thing

Thanks for the reply...I'm on the Orange network so I thought they would have been up to speed with technology incorporating call and data at the same time...

Same issue here.
I'm pretty sure that GPRS and voice calls can't work at the same time because of the 2G network, but thought at least the voice call would interrupt the data session.

That's my understanding. 3 & 3.5G allows voice and data at the same time.
but on 2G it's either GPRS or voice... that used to drive me crazy with my Prophet too

Ah, that makes sense...I usually turn off the 3G to extend battery life so that would be the reason I missed calls...may turn it back to 3G if I'm doing a session of browsing in future...
Cheers

even with my 2g himalaya I didn't have any problems with both calling and gprs
it was why gprs was interduced to replace the slower and older gsm dataconnection
which worked the same way as an analog modem which blocked of cause
of cause only class A gprs devices support that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Packet_Radio_Service#Hardware
but all these phones today are that
problem is that class A is required in both the phone and the operators network hardware

Try with RADIO ROM 1.16.
Problem with this rom is apparently solved.

Hmmm, it worked on mine. HTweakC did give an error message when I first started the program because my phone is a Trinity and not a Hermes. I just ignored that message. Then after turning off the HSDPA, I exited the program and did a soft reset by pressing the power button for 3 seconds, this way you make sure the change gets saved.
Excuse my ignorance: why would you want to turn HSPDA *off*? To save battery power?

When HSDPA is on, you can't receive a phone call, it goes to voicemail. There is no problem receiving a call in 3G or GSM Edge mode. I don't know if it is a problem with current systems or if that is the way it was intended to work, but I don't want to miss calls because my phone is receiving an email.

Huh? Is that a local thing?
Here in The Netherlands it is no problem at all. When I'm connected to UMTS or HSDPA (on the Vodafone network) I can be connected simulatinously.
So, I receive pushmail when I am on the phone or when I'm surfing I can be called at the same time.
adodesign and Matterhorn: that must be something to do with your provider. I am on T-mobile in the UK and I have no such issue. In fact I just tested it about 10 times in my house where there is a good HSPDA signal. I started downloading a large file at about 850 kbps and phoned myself - my Hermes dropped from "H" to "3G" and the call came through no problem. Once I hung up, it stepped back up to "H" and the download was not interrupted.
ok... i'm in the US using Cingular and i know they have HSDPA enabled in some markets. i have a HTC P3600 and would like to know how i can tell if HSDPA is enabled. if HSDPA enabled by default how would i know? if i have to manually enable it, what are the steps to activate it? thanks for the advice/guidance...

Well I guess it must be something to do with certain providers. I'm not the only one that has reported the busy problem with HSDPA. I'm going to test it again when I go into France to see if it happens there.
3G framework designed to able receive call while data transmitting. Whenever there is incoming calls, it will automatically disconnect data tranmission. However, this feature needs to be fully support by your local carrier.
In 2G network, you will not be able to answer call while data tranmitting. But you will still be able to answer call if GPRS is connected, with no data tranmisting. This is by 2G design, nothing to do with the carrier.
Hope this helps

Its a network issue.
I remeber reading on 3's Website here that it was an issue and a software Update on their network here in aust in April will fix it.
Speak to your provider and see if they are planning a network update soon.

Thanks for that news, I'll give them a call today . I think that it is likely that I'm not even supposed to be receiving HSDPA on this network. Before this phone was released it was reserved for one of those PC card wirless solutions for laptops, which they charge a fortune to use. The roms that come on the Swisscom Trinity has HSDPA disabled. They'll probably tell me that I'm not supposed to use it .
just few words to say that on the SFR network (france) , when i am connected in HSDPA , i can't receive any calls ... they are rediricted to my voicemail

Thanks for that info. I won't bother to check on SFR now. I'll just leave HSDPA switched off for the time being. 3G is good enough for now. This is an app that will turn off HSDPA http://www.fit4cat.de/thread.php?threadid=263 .
There is an application made for the Hermes that I am successfully using on my Trinity that switches 3G on and off. It also will switch off your data at night to save battery life. It creates an icon at the bottom of the screen for quick network change when you want a fast connection. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=35394&d=1173876750 .

EDIT : i've just call my provider ,this behaviour is normal , an upgrade from them is necessary to make calls during hsdpa connection , thanx to tdub !

I have the problem, with HSDPA, on Sfr network, i've got a 3G plan, for access to wap! is impossible, but In Web all is allright, with very Hi speed i ever see on mobile
Is it really HSDPA?
I recently flashed my Orange UK Trinity (SPV M700):
WM6.1.Black Edition by Akeo
Radio Radio 1.50.08.11
For the first time I noted that HSDPA was available and then shortly after that I was missing a lot of call's. 3 out of 5 seem calls to go straight to answer phone. My concern is that this seems to happen mainly with calls from mobiles on the same network (Orange UK) and yet rarely (if at all) with calls from land lines. Is this perhaps a red herring?.
After reading this thread I'm hoping that HSDPA is the cause of the issue and that someone can explain how to disable HSDPA on the Trinity device?
I tried HTweakC 2.1b but no luck. HSDPA remained active.

Phone calls drop data on 3G?

All, I am sure there is a thread on this somewhere, I just can't find it... please help.
I've got an AT&T Tilt with stock ROM, no bloatware. The problem is that when a phone call comes in (or I dial out), it seems to drop or interrupt the data connection even on 3G. Very annoying.
On my 8525 with WM6 ROM, this never happened. I could be connected to the internet (typically connecting my laptop via Internet Sharing on the 8525), and be talking on the phone at the same time -- the data connection was never interrupted. Of course if I was on an EDGE or GPRS network, it would -- but that's to be expected since GPRS/EDGE use the same radio as GSM. On the 8925, as I stated above, a phone call interrupts data even on 3G!
Has anyone seen this? How do I fix it? Thanks.

Yep overhere also... testing all radio roms but all the same... so far no fix found... we have to live with it...
The kaizer is dead... long live the Kaizer...
... to many problems
I'm in Edge country right now, but will be in 3g in a few minutes as I'm getting ready to roll out to LA, I'll email you from the car to test if the 3g and phone call can co-exist.
I think it has to do something with AT&T's cell towers. I also experienced the same issue that when calls came in my data connection would be cancelled. However one day, out of the blue, the 3G icon was suddenly replaced by an H icon. And it is there all the time! Now I can call and download data at the same time.
Thanks... that's bizzare. H means it's using the HSDPA protocol for 3G, U means it's UMTS, I think now the 3G icon shows up instead of U. (I hope I got my acronyms right). But that shouldn't matter! My phone will go between 3G and H, I think based on the capabilities of the towers. There is no telling what will show up in a given spot.
The mystery remains... Come on, all experts out there, share your wisdom. Could this have anything to do with disconnection settings or TCP settings (done via KaiserTweak)?
I think I just found the answer. Went to KaiserTweak, and selected the Data/Disconnect After setting, which I had set to 1 minute. In the description for that setting, It says "warning.." but you can't see the warning unless you go to landscape mode, which is why I never noticed it before. The warning says that with this setting, 3G Simultaneous Voice and Data will no longer work.
Disconect disabled, and a quick test showed that the problem is solved.

Simultaneous Incoming/Outgoing Calls + Internet GPRS/EDGE/3G/UMTS Connection Problem

Something giving me mad, is the fact that since a long times using WM phone I was not able to receive calls when I am connecting to internet and using the bandwith, like for streaming, surfing the web etc....
It seems that when you use the internet connection, it is not possible to make a call, and worst not possible to RECEIVE any call !!! That's very annoying me since I must be joinable all the time for my work clients !
I have used QTEK 8300, TyTN, TyTN II, now Touch Diamond, and It is always the same problem, may be something I make wrong in my settings, but It seems that I am not the only one ! May be depending on my operator, because in the past I was by another operator (Proximus) but with a nokia phone and in GPRS, and when I was surfing the net, if a call arrived the internet communication pause and resume after the call.
Now with mobistar I have last technology phone and always in EDGE but was totaly unable to receive call when using internet ! The operator can't apparently help me !
If any of you have any proposal to resolve this problem let's me know
Thanks for all your help

Nobody can help me ? Have you same problem also ?
i have the same problem when i use internet over EDGE
I have this issue also, if i have ActiveSync set to push email so theres always a data connection i cannot receive any calls. Ive never had this problem before with any other HTC phone though and im on Tmob the same as i was before
Strange situation and apparently nobody can explain why that appear and how to troubleshoot :-(
May be I have post in the wrong section, there are a Networking section in the General Folder. But it seems that it is also depending on the phone you have maybe the rom have influence or some settings, apparently that's not coming from the operator.
Hope somebody can help us !
Hello,
I have the same issue with my HTC Diamond with Belite ROM.
Has anyone the answer to this problem? is there a setting that must be changed? I can't imagine that a business phone has this problem, I never had this with my Nokia's E-series!
Is the HTC diamond a Class A Grps phone??
Class A, Class B & Class C?
The class indicates the mobile phone capabilities.
Class A
Class A mobile phones can be connected to both GPRS and GSM services simultaneously.
Class B
Class B mobile phones can be attached to both GPRS and GSM services, using one service at a time. Class B enables making or receiving a voice call, or sending/receiving an SMS during a GPRS connection. During voice calls or SMS, GPRS services are suspended and then resumed automatically after the call or SMS session has ended.
Class C
Class C mobile phones are attached to either GPRS or GSM voice service. You need to switch manually between services.
I have push email going ALL day and don't have any problem taking phone calls - after all that would be totally pointless to offer services like that, that don't work together.
Try a different ROM, or call your service provider and ask them if it is something to do with them - as the Diamond can do all this no problems...
EDIT: You might want to install Diamond Tweak - there is a setting in there (Setting 6.1) that the author mentions altering might disable simultaneous voice and data connections. Have a play around with that setting and see if it helps.
yeah get in touch with HTC and ask them about it

Diamond is class B. There are no class A phones in the market that I know about.
You should be able to at least make calls whilst using GPRS (data trasnfer goes to idle and resume after call ends).
It works fine here (vodafone UK) to make calls, but not to receive them. This is known to happen on all phones, being a limitation of vodafone UK network in GPRS only.
If it does not work for you guys, there are two possible explanations:
1) Something wrong with the ROM your are using -> unlikely.
OR
2) Something to do with your operator network. Are you all having problem over GPRS/EDGE only?
I believe point 2 is more likely to be the issue, because apparently GPRS/EDGE may not support concurrent voice and data transmission on some networks, even if the phone is class B. This is a "limitation" of the specific network infrastructure. Your only solution is not to use GPRS and use 3G (and more battery juice).
But I am not sure this is an option for you, if you have no 3G coverage.
Cheers!!

Like I said, I run with GSM most times of the day unless I do some web browsing or use the Diamond as a modem. Near enough GSM all the time. Push email all the time. No problems with simultaneous data/voice connections as the phone rings during all of this.
Like I said above - check any registry tweaks you have done related to GPRS (auto attach, disconnect timer, etc) and if you're still unsure HARD RESET and TEST IT.
Other than that the last remaining factor is your network provider. Borrow a friends SIM card and TEST IT!
Hi
When i want to connect GPRS network on my htc touch diamond, my phone connect EDGE instead of gprs and the E icon show on taskbar !
and ther is no internet.
Please Help me
All,
I made some testing and i can confirm that when i load some data (refresh a webpage in opera) and make a call to my diamond using another handset :
In Edge: i can't reach the diamond and go directly to the voicemai. I can reach the diamond only when there is no datatransitting.
In 3G: i can call and reach the diamond without a problem!
Note that in 3G and in gsm, it is impossible to make a call and simulteanously surf on opera (
Can some of you make similar tests?
My testing was made on Belgian Mobistar Network.
I will also make some additional tests with my nokia e51.
cheerz
Any other experniences? I still have the issue (
Still nobody suffering from this issue?
I can't receive calls while i'm connected in gprs!
I'm using the official HTC 1.93 ROM
Please help me out.
When I am using data, and I receive a phone call, I notice that my GPRS connection becomes 'suspended'. You can see this by clicking the 'G' or 'E' icon in the taskbar on the Diamond.
If you're using 3G then you can do both at once without suspension.
Orange in the UK... tested conclusively...
When connected to GPRS and not receiving data a call will get through, however when data packets are in the process of being received, any incoming call is put to voicemail.
In practice, if you set GPRS on full time, this won't be a very noticeable factor in an average day, due to the ratio of time data is actually in transmission for push email etc, to when it isn't. In fact I'd say daily radio drop-out for the average user would result in far greater down time imho. As for time spent surfing on GPRS, I think due to the speed implications, for the majority of users this would be of negligible impact in an average day, and it will be lessened further by virtue of being aware that you're not contactable in that period of data use.
As for edge and 3g, I can't say yet, as I only get them when I go into town... but I suspect edge will yield the same results as GPRS. Not sure about 3g, but would hope it's able to work independently. If I remember, I'll report more findings in the next few days.
m having the same problem with my x1
whenever i am using edge i cant receive calls
if anyone found the solution
pls tell me....
i have touch HD (BLACKSTONE) ,,, i could do both for a long time ,, but now i cant it disconnects my data connection when i pick the phone ,, and when i finish the phone it connects back ,, but im 100% sure i could pick phone calls with out data connection getting disconnected

Aren't phone calls supposed to interrupt Edge?

I know I can not recieve Data while on a phone call with Edge. But shouldn't an incoming call interrupt an Edge connection?
I have a stock AT&T Tilt rom (latest WM 6.0 not 6.1) I have KaiserTweak with most settings in it set to advised. Is there anything in KaiserTweak that will cause this to happen?
I am trying to run IM+ on the phone and when it is online and connected all calls go straight to voicemail. Also when I tether and a phone call comes in it goes straight to voicemail and doesn't ring my phone. I WANT it to interrupt my Data service so I can get the phone call. (it is a phone after all)
This seems to be more of a function of the specific phone rather than the phone network. For instance, if you call a 1st gen iphone (2g/edge) while it is on an active data connection, it will disconnect the data session and the phone will ring. However, the same is not true of a Kaiser/Tilt.
My best guess is that phones w/ 3g pay less attention to edge performance and features because 3g can coexist simultaneously with a phone call.
RK
On the tilt, when you're connected to EDGE, calls will interrupt the connection IF it is idle and no data is being transferred. If data is being transmitted then the call is rejected. I've never seen anything about changing that behavior.
2.5G vs 3G
First of all excuse me for my English.
I know that EDGE is an evolution of GPRS, commonly knowed as 2nd generation. For this reason is called 2.5 generation. In GPRS and EDGE, data connection is stopped during a voice call. EDGE inherit the behaviuor of GPRS. Only 3g standards like UMTS HSDPA or HSUPA allows data connection during a voice call.
Ciao, from Italy
Francesco
It turns out that if you have the "Disconnect After" setting enabled in KaiserTweak phone calls will not stop Edge. If I turn this off then I receive calls while on an Edge connection. Seems kinda silly to me. Now I have to pretty much have data on at all times. Goodbye battery life.

Froyo turns of 3G when on Wifi

As the title says, when my Nexus One is connected to a Wifi network it turns off 3G. Which makes since to save battery. I'm in Japan, and use Softbank as my carrier. Softbank does not use 2G for voice, but only 3G for voice and HSPA(+) for data.
So I am unable to receive voice calls while on Wifi...I thought about using Google Voice as a workaround but it still does not support re-routing non-U.S. phone numbers.
Any ideas? I hope custom ROMS such as Cyanogenmod fix this.
Thanks,
Brandon

I get 3g when I'm on wifi...
Change your phone settings to WCDMA only.
*#*#4636#*#*
it doesnt turn 3g off, it just removes the 3g icon from next to your signal meter. but you still have hsdpa connection if you go into settings and check. is this what you mean?
uhhh that doesnt sound right... you should still have your 3g voice connection even on wifi...
Yes, the 3G icon goes away when connected to WiFi.
I just tried it again, and it worked. I don't know why it didnt the other times I tried to call from it, and tried calling to the phone,
Thanks
