Is it stuck at the android screen or is it boot looping? And don't freak.. rooting, if you've done some research isn't too bad.
It was stuck on the android screen. But I wiped the data and installed a fresh copy of cyanogen mod.
So you got past the android logo?
Yes, now I did because I wiped everything and then installed a new copy. So far it seems to be working. Fingers crossed.
Congrats my friend! Enjoy having root.. If you're interested in running hero.. lemme know! I'm running jacx1.5r2 and it's just speedy as all get out. anyway have fun!
Thanks a lot. I have a question is it better to run the cyanogen mod or the jacx rom?
That's a question that only you have an answer for. I don't personally like the xROM but that's because I've tasted Hero and can't let it go When it comes to the different roms if you really want to know how they run, flash and test! This is going to be the best way for you to see the differences between the roms. (also check the rom's change logs. they have information about updates and whatnot)
Last question, do I need to wipe the phone clean before going to different rom or just flash the rom?
Most of the non-hero roms you can flash without wiping. But if you run into bootloops, then you'll need to wipe.
Alright, thanks a lot for the help.

No problem man
If you plan on trying any Hero roms makes sure you update the new Radio and SPL. And please god make sure you do the RADIO FIRST then the SPL. If you don't do it that way you will have a $400 paperweight.
And my opinion, stick with non-Hero for now. Not saying they aren't good but I have tested all of them for a day or 2 each and even with a class 6 sd card and trying different swap values and sizes they always have some lag. If you are a casual user then I suppose you would be fine, but I have a business to run and cannot afford to miss any calls or texts. I need the web to run and be able to go home without and lag, or to get a quick email out in under a minute. Some people here say its just as fast but I have to disagree for the most part. When the dev's can get these new sets of hero rom's to be fully stable/optimized maybe I will try again but if you rely on your phone like I do then you may want to stick with cyan/xrom/jf for now.

Sorry I'm new around here and I'm hoping this is the right place to ask this...
But, I'm probably about to flash my phone with JACHero.
I just wanted to know if it had the IM apps or not (Yahoo, GTalk, AIM, etc)
And do all the normal apps from the market work or are there "special" apps you need to download. Any info is appreciated.
Are you familier with troubleshooting roms?. iF not cyan 3.6.5 is the best best
jachero require patience you should wait for the most stable hero rom lots of lag and that wounderful bootloop. I was about to give my phone away.
It has gtalk but not the other IM apps. You don't need any "special" apps.
OK, cool. Also, I flashed the cyanogen recovery image. But after I reboot back into the recovery console I get this at the top "E: Can't open cache/recovery/command"
That isn't really relevant.
So what do I do now just continue on with flashing the JACHero ROM now?
Sorry, I was confused and was snappy at alritewhadeva

yes, don't worry about that error on the top. Just make sure you have the newest radio flashed as well as the new dangerous SPL flashed first before you do that, as well as the cyanogen's recovery 1.3.1. If you have all that, feel free to flash to your heart's content.
Actually, you need to make sure you have the correct partitions, if you don't know, its on the first post of the JACHero2.7.3 thread. Good luck, you can PM me if you have any problems and you want help fast without starting a new thread.
I need help im not confident with linux im ok with windows and windows mobile I hacked with ROM's on my Touch but I want to root my Dream (make a backup of the stock ROM first) and root it with a Hero ROM but I dont really know how to go about it and after reading the threads im still not 100% clear of the steps I need to follow to be sure I dont wreck my phone.

here is a tried and tested guide for rooting your phone. it is a bit outdated but the method that would be most preferred for rooting. there is also a guide to one click root in my sig. it was written for noobs so it is fairly comprehensive.
here is a very well written guide by nephron on how to get hero on your phone after you root it.
finally when you want to go back to stock, you look here.
i hope these links help you. i am very tired and must go to bed now. if you still need help i can help you once i get up in a few hours, but since you seem fairly knowledgeable, i wouldn't be surprised to wake up to you having a hero rom. i hope these links prove to be helpful.

sorry to derail your thread skauk
I am a quick learner, I am thinking of signing up for pimp university though, I hear they have a great program and helped many succesful pimps on their way
I am not sorry bout derailing your thread, I am a thread robber too, you know that g1f**d up thread, yeah that was me, I stole that **** and got away with it, my follow bandits and I (you know who I am talking) we are good
does the procedure tell you how to backup your stock rom or do i need to root it before i can backup the current rom in case I wasnt to restore ???
It gives you the option of backing up but if it really works I do not know, but once you change the spl, it stays at that spl unless you flash another spl or unroot by rc29/7. I would root it, wipe it once you are in recovery, apply hardspl, flash your rom of choice other than hero or xrom( I suggest cyanogenmod stable 4.04) boot up, wait the ten to 15 minutes for the initial boot, sign in to google, then reboot back into recovey by holding home and power at the g1 screen and make a nandroid backup of your new rom
My Build number is not RC anything its CRC37 ?? do i just follow rooting UK RC8 or higer instructions on the thread mentioned in post 1 of this thread ?
Now I am gonna follow david's lead and I am going to sleep finally

Why not hero or xrom ??? I saw a thread on a hero ROM that most regarded as fast and usable
thanks for all your info guys im still not 100% confident to be honest bit of a grey are linux lol
Hmmm... why not hero or an xrom because they require the danger spl first, which I suggest that you get more comfortable with your phone and flashing first. Rc was the first line of android coding that refered to android 1.0, cr refers to a 1.5 cupcake build. You downgrade to rc7/rc29 to take advantage of a security loophole that google patched in later builds but that is the old fashion way of rooting which unfoutunely you don't have to go through since you have the one root click option. Don't expect google to leave that exploit open for to long, will be proboly be patched in the 1.6 firmware
I have had my Touch Diamond for a while but have always been afraid to switch Roms. My battery life is awful and my phone seems really slow. So I have thought about switching Roms. I figure it will make my phone seem new to me again and maybe help with some of my issues.
A couple of questions:
How do I go about doing this the first time? What steps do I need to make sure I do so I don't brick my phone and will still have my contacts and all?
Which Rom would you recommend? I'm on Alltel, I don't know if that matters. I would like something that helps with battery life and performance and also will look cool.
Thanks for any help. I'm sure these are really generic questions, but I don't really know what I am doing with this the first time.
your concats will erase so make sure you get a buckup software to make sure you still have them
research
check out the wiki section http://wiki.xda-developers.com/ for starting info on how to flash a ROM.
There are certain things you need to know before flashing like if our phone is locked to a carrier.. you will also probably want to backup your contacts and other info, maybe even emails and txts, so you will need a backup application.
You will probably want to make not of your current phones ROM and radio settings as well.
Keep in mind that there is a risk, however small it may be, to flashing a ROM. Please read up on the steps thoroughly before jumping in for the best chance of success.
note, i am currently in the same boat as you, wanting to flash my first ROM, but am still in the process of educating myself on how it works.
I plan on putting together my own How-To written in complete noob-speak once i have successfully flashed my first....

I'm also new to this whole flashing thing.
Recently got bored of the look of my TD from Bell.... and stumbled across this site with so many cool looking ROMS but I have no idea how/where to start even after reading the guides.
Hopefully you have success with yours and teach me and the OP
Okay, I've done my fair share of searching numerous forums. So, please don't flame for some noobish questions.
I owned a G1 before and had no problem re-flashing a new rom image every other day. Maybe it's the price tag on my N1 that has had me hesitating with rooting it.
Ok, here is my 'problem' I just got the new OTA update FRG83. I would like to know exactly how I would go about rooting and installing a new ROM on my N1.
Also, what ROM is the best out there for the N1, I used cyanogen on my G1 forever so I really trust his ROMS.
Basically I'm just really afraid of messing my phone up, although I'm sure it's just as easy as it was on my G1.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Right... I've read that.
Just making sure I'm following the correct steps.
First: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792016
Second: Does bootloader have to be unlocked?
Third: Recovery Image
Fourth: Wipe/flash new rom
Anything I'm missing?
No need to unlock - the whole point is rooting w/o unlocking.
Flash the recovery using flash_image method.
Nothing else missing.
okay...
F:\ADB>adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage
I get an error

Anyone? I would realllllly like to root my device?
This thread seems to help with the rooting process. I am already rooted, so I cannot test it.

As for a ROM to use, I use Enomther's official Nexus. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614427 I have tried several different ROM's and this one is hands down the best. I have not used CM6 since RC1, so I cannot speak for how that is now. But Enomther's was way better than CM6 RC1 IMO.
I'm with stickerbob with being rooted and loved enomther's. Now I've moved to MIUI, and I don't believe I'll be looking back anytime soon. Love MIUI, once I flashed the English translation pack 3 that is =D it rocks IMO. If you wanna look into it after root...

i have rooted and flashed the hero many many times, but this one makes me more nervous I dont have much time to read as it is a birthday gift, but i keep reading about problems with youtube and gmail.. do they have to be linked before rooting.. whats the best rom with 1.1.0..
i just dont want to miss any vitally important steps and screw this up.. any help? Is there a step by step guide.. thanks much
I would start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872003
After rooting your device you can decide to stay on the stock rom and just have more functionality or you can move to a variety or other roms running Andoid Eclair,Froyo,Gingerbread, or Honeycomb.
Each of these ROM has their own ups and downs. If this is a gift for a non-techy person I would suggest just using a rooted stock with some tweaks or rooting and installing Eclair as these seem to be the most stable options at the moment.
Because the Nooks has priority on SDcard booting you can run any of these roms off the SDcard as well while leaving your stock Nook OS in place. This is a great option if you just want to give a bunch of different ROMs a test. Also the boot priority of the SDcard makes 'bricking' the nook nearly impossible. So while you can still screw up your Nook you will most surely be able to fix it.
Thanks for your help.. I rooted it and left it stock for now.. if he wants something different i will change it to Eclair.. its **Beautiful** I am impressed.. might have to pick one up for myself.. Thanks
