Sprite Backup for Android - myTouch 3G, Magic Apps and Games

Now that I can see the paid apps on the market here in India, I'm seeing this app called the sprite backup. There is not a free version to test out so has anyone given this backup application a spin yet? Or can someone tell me a decent backup application they've used? I went through all the ones I could see on the market and they all have mixed comments and review. Perhaps that's just the way it is with backup programs though...

Buy it and then ask for refund within the first 48hours if you dont like it?

Funny thing is... I got a copy of Sprite Backup Free Trial sitting in my phone.

i've been using prite Backup on WindowsMobile 2003SE and liked it a lot! Saved me from different heartaches of loosing all my data / programs / settings. Definitly worth giving it a try!

Sprite Backup & ROM upgrades

Hi there,
I'm interested in upgrading my MDAIII to WM5005 but the idea of re-installing all my apps isn't very appealing.
The blurb on the Sprite Backup page claims the latest version will allow restores across ROM or device upgrades.
Is this the case, has anyone tried it and is it worth spending $30 for it?
Cheers,
Q.
Yes I am also interested in the same question. Maybe someone has a full or cracked version of sprite we can all experiment with?
Regards,
Simon
You guys might want to try (SPB Backup) instead
I had both and only use SPB backup now. Sprite is a big PITA compared to SPB.
Just my thoughts.
Personally, I'd never use an upgrade tool on a phone or a PC. When you import things, you import old stuff you might not want. Irrelevant config settings, incorrect registry keys and so on. I prefer to start afresh, nice & clean. With the phone, it's best (IMHO) to use ActiveSync to get your PIM data and simply enable file-sync to make a copy of My Documents on your desktop. Just drag over the old sync folder to the new once it's been upgraded and you have all your stuff across with little effort.
I'm prefering cabs these days for apps as they can be kept on the storage card and reinstalled in seconds if required.
You actualy HAVE to hard reset your device when updating to WM5; that means erasing all. You cannot restore some old settings or programs as this will be death for your PPC.
On the other hand, both SPB and Sprite can be used to restore Contacts, E-mails or PIMs (if you have a WM5 version).

Backing up before flashing - what do you use

...and what do you lose?
I've been having a ton of fun upgrading the ROM on my Wing, which I've had nearly a month now. Except now I'm reaching the point where I don't want to lose all my data when I flash (I've got DirectSync running on my own Exchange Server, so I'm covered for contacts and e-mails).
I've seen SpBBackup listed as a good backup solution, but I was curious - what will it back up for me? Will it restore logs of text messages and phone calls after a backup and flash? Will it backup installed programs (actually hoping this isn't the case, since I imagine a flash really deserves a reinstall of programs).
What do you use or recommend if I want to keep as much of the logged data on my phone through ROM updates?
use pimbackup (2.5) to back up your:
contacts
mms/sms
emails
all calls
Personnaly, I use Sprite Backup, well worth the money.
You can backup/restore exactly you want (documents, system settings, even system files...). Excellent even when not flashing, after a hard reset for example.
I always have a backup file of a good working system on my storage card, so I can get all my applications back in ten minutes, even away from a computer.
Last time I checked, SPB backup didn't work when upgrading ROM, or at least didn't work well.
I don't know how well it does it now, though.
Thanks guys - I'm going to have to look into them. I was under the impression that SpBBackup was the frontrunner, but that's purely based on an older device that I used to back up (that I never changed ROMs on).
I have spbBackup but the only thing I ever used it for was call logs/contacts/text messages/ etc. and I found out the pimBackup does this all for free. So I've switched to pimBackup. Spb backup has a nice feature where it makes the backup files executable so you don't need the program installed to restore your backups, but pimbackup is just a single executable that comes built in with most roms (or in the case that it doesn't you could just place the executable on your storage card.) It works very well for me. Whenever I reflash I like to reinstall and reconfigure anyways (this also helps find any bugs in the rom.)

Sprite help needed

OK, I posted this in the general forum without much luck..there is more traffic here so I figured I'd give it a go here. Hope someone can help:
I have a few questions about sprite backup that I hope someone here can answer:
First off, my device is a Kaiser in case it matters (I don't think so in this case except my last and least important question)
1) When backing up with sprite, I always get the error that it can not include Windows\lic\Isoma000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.db. Why doesn't it back this file up and could it pose any problems in the long run?
2) After a hard reset, if I restore using one of my backup files, i get a lot of errors on the report. Most of the errors say "Error creating value Defalut" but a few say other thing like "Error creating Threading Model / Merit / IsRendered". However, if I do not hard reset prior to restore, i get no errors. What is the problem here? I can't think of any reason why a hard reset prior to restore would be bad.
3) After hard reset, restoring one of my backups causes sporatic duplications in the programs view (i.e. windows\start menu\programs). Usually it is tasks, calculator or calendar that is duplicated but if it is one or all is completely random it seems. I know I can simply delete these dupes but why is it happening in the first place and how do I prevent it? Secondly, i don't know what else it is duping on the device and don't want to browse every file on the device to find out.
4) This one is a little more Kaiser specific but still in regards to sprite. On the apps disk, the are two separate sprite files it seems. The only difference I can see is on has the PPC and desktop version while the other is just the cab for PPC. Funny thing is, the cab is labled as HTC Backup even though it is obviously sprite after install. This is the one I used for install since I didn't care much about the PC agent. Could this be part of my issue? Also, is there any reason I should install one over the other if I don't care about the PC side of sprite (I suppose I could install using that file and then uninstall the pc side but....). This one is more of a curiosity overall as I don't see why it would matter shich version I installed (assuming the file called HTC Backup...... is the same.)
Please help me to understand what's going on here. While not new to PPC, I am new to sprite as I have always used SPB in the past and never had these issues. Wanted to try sprite due to the extended options. Now I'm wondering if my decision to try sprite over SPB was the wrong one.
Sprite has a forum. I am sure they can answer your questions.

I've checked with sprite 2x with no answer.
Don't know about your other questions, but I had the same (windows/lic/lsoma....) file that would not back up and I was able to restore fine.
Hi there,
If you are having problems with Sprite Backup, please log a query in the CRM support desk and attached your log files. Please also make sure tha that you are using the latest version of Sprite Backup. Current version is 6.1.

Drive Image/Ghost like apps for the Wing?

On PC, I have used Drive Image/Ghost to image my machine
If something goes wrong, I just restore my image, and I am back in business
Is there any similar backup/image program for Wing/WM6.1?
Thanks!
I think the closer to Ghost that you can find is SPB Clone...
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/clone/?en
You can use the trial and buy if you like i guess
Thanks for the link!
$299 for SPB Clone
$19.95 for SPB Backup
Hum...
What's the difference between these 2 apps?
"Spb Backup is an application for creating reserve copies of data"
SPB Backup is used to backup data and settings, but not actual Windows system files..
The main difference is that if you have a total failure you'll have to reinstall your applications, THEN restore the data using SPB Backup...
I prefer the second solution myself personally, because newer versions of software always come out, and i change roms all the time so a Clone backup would be more or less useless.
If you are new to this thing i would suggest to first do a search on the forum and find PPCPimBackup which backs up all phone settings (contacts, messages etc), and just organise your data so that it's always on the storage card, so that in case you need to do a hard reset you have everything you need on the storage card + a fairly recent backup with the software i mentioned above.

Full Tilt restore?

I'm sure it's on here somewhere but I couldn't easily find it. I have an original Tilt with WM6 and a bunch of customizations (naturally). The keyboard is screwing up so I'm going to get a warranty replacement but I don't want to start over with all the various configurations and app installs. Is there a way to do a complete backup/restore to the new phone to include all files, WM settings, registry settings, and applications?
llook here:
http://pocketpccentral.net/software/backup.htm
and see if you can find something that will suite your needs.
Thanks. Any particular recommendation out of those options?
I like SPB Backup, but it is not free. Sprite Backup would be my second choice, but I had a few problems in the past with it. SPB Backup has never once let me down.
