GPS Location Software - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

My wife is traveling and I wish to be able to locate her. She's gotten lost twice already and she's traveling for SEVERAL hours from Indian to Minnesota.
She has an AT&T Epix with GPS integrated.
Is there software that I can install on my AT&T Tilt that will allow me to locate her? Her GPS is working, but the Google Maps is a little hard for her to track.
Thanks for your help.

have you tried altenative..
have you tried an alternative or checked this out ,( if so, ignore my suggestions.) as a backup ,if you cannot find what you are looking for ?
the name is the same as your heading..."GPS LOACATION..BY HIGHWAY "
of xda ,found under development and hacking, or try link...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549517
example ..your wife could send you sms /email with link , which is just case of selecting, email or sms option on the software tab,
when you receive email , click on relevant link ,and you can see her position on google..? ( you dont have to do no tracking ? it pinpoints you with , street name and no ..)
i find this "gps location application ", very handy (works perfect on my hd )
hope this helps

Google maps with Latitude ?

gpsed
Try gpsed, http://gpsed.com/downloads. Free version allows tracking in as little as 1 minute incrememts. Installs on her phone, she activates and you follow along on any web browser. Works well.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know what happened. I've got my notifications set to INSTANT notifications and I didn't know anyone replied.
Well, she's traveling now and we don't have the option of installing the program. We have AT&T Navigator on her phone, and it's SUPPOSED to be able to SHARE the location, but the AT&T reps who PUSHED this product on us HAVE NO CLUE as to how to make it happen. And tech support hasn't returned my call.
I also want to install a program on my son's phone so that I can track his whereabouts WITHOUT his knowledge as well.
I thought there were programs out there that would allow that.

gpstoday.. www.geoterrestrial.com .. awsome app and will tell you down to the address of where she is.. and you can see her on a map all for free.. you will need to have internet access on the phone though..

Thanks Chris. I'll take a look at it now. My wife and I both have data plans. Is there something to install on EACH phone, or just MY phone since I'm wanting to track her?
Thanks for your help.

It would be nice to not have to use data--just an application that doesn't require internet. However, google's 411 is pretty amazing.
Ok then get a gps app, like tomtom Kaboom you have poi's and the ability to update them
without needing to data connection, ok you may need to sync
but thats about all i can think of right now.
Yes I too wish my phone had every phone number, address, and breif explaination of every place on earth. I'm having a hard time finding a micro sd card that will hold that info.
Find a suitable program.....and then say that.
When I did not have a data plan, I also used 1800goog411. Once I got data, I used Google Maps for WM. I am a Google whore.

Livesearch works best for me but that is data...you can always use google text service just text to 466453 and they will text you back with what you need

Praise the Good Lord Almighty Thank YOU!! no data plan + unlimited texting + google text search service = heaven? well as close to...well search heaven for people without data plans and with unlimited texting can get.
I use live search as all I have to do is start it with voice command by saying "Live Search" and tap the left softkey and say something like: "Liquor Stores in Orlando, FL" and it brings up the list of the all the liquor stores in the area. (It obviously works with other places too)
You seriously think there's an application that will be able to have every phone number for every business in America without having some sort of data connection? Here's what you should, Go get a heavy duty hole puncher, and when I say heavy duty, I mean like this mofo can put a hole through your head. Then grab a phone book and punch a hole through it. Go get a chain and chain it around a belt loop. Then you won't have to bother with your phone ever. Now thats convenience.

gps location for contacts

I have been searching all overr and I'm yet to see am amswer for my question? So I've cdcided to post it on the best site for htc phones. is there a way aside from the app, Pinpoint to show where you are? I mean like what I want to do is have google maps app be able to save my location and adress using the gps and allow me to save it to a contact so that this way next time I want to get to my aunts house for example I can just go to her info click adress and voila. It has a route sshowing me the route.
A strange sense of deja vu washed over me reading this, I was thinking exactly the same thing a few hours ago.
Being able to save GPS information for contacts would be something of great importance considering the devices capabilities, apps like AndNav2 could then use contact GPS co-ordinates for quick navigation, the same could be said of google maps and other applications that use GPS information.

Can't you just save an address to the contact and then click on get directions? Or does the location have no street address?
Well yeaah that too. I was thinking of that but the thing is, my cousins house doesn't show up through maps. But it tells me the coordinates using GPS and yeeah it can still give me directions like that. Soo yeah, its sort of a half and half.
For locations without street addresses, you can still map them using lat/long coordinates. Just enter the coordinates into the address field as x,y. For example, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave would be entered as 38.89767967065576, -77.03656196594238
The My Maps Editor application might be of some use too. Basically it lets you display and edit custom maps (which means overlaid graphics on actual google maps) on the G1. Since these overlays are static, it won't route you from an arbitrary location. However if you want to see a hiking path from say a fixed street address out to a lake in the middle of the woods, this could help.

AndNav2 uses OpenStreetMap for it's navigation and metadata retrieval, and currently the UK post code search is limited to a few post codes (Zip codes). Most of my contacts won't show up. It will get better in time.....
Thanks Jashsu. Really, Like That really does help and is a very good substittue for an app. But yet another, question, Is It just my phone or Is it Google Maps, THat has a bug, When i know im home and i just want to mess around and activate gps and see my location. it's a google maps issue, which really screws with me when tryin to use Locale. i had a situation set to put my phone on silent if it is between 2 am and 12 pm AND i am at home, but since it thinks i'm about 1/4 mi away it hasn't worked yet.

The more powered off the gps is when you attempt to access it (and also the worse your direct view of the sky is) then the longer it will take to get a good gps lock. If you habitually turn the gps function off (or you have a program that automatically does it) then every time you turn the gps on, it has to perform a cold start. This means it will take between one and five minutes to get a bead, depending on the number of satellites your phone can see at the time.
If you use gps often then don't turn it off. The amount of power saved by fully unpowering the chipset is not worth the amount of power it consumes fully cold starting every time you need it (not to mention the time wasted waiting for it to get a bead).
If you used the gps function and then left the gps-using application or put the phone into standby, the gps chipset remains in standby. The next time you access the gps, it will be considered a warm start and will take between 1-30 seconds, depending on various factors.

I am trying to install this on my phone, but every time I try to install it's failing and saying please reinstall and opening internet explorer with download page.

It would be awesome if it was a simple as putting in someones phone number and you could get a trace on them haha... like in the movies

Yeah she have to have this installed. And you need two Google account. One for you and your wife. Run the program then hide it in the background. The stalking begins.. Lol
You can also view from igoogle. It says that it's unavailable in my location, but if i go to m.google.com/latitude in my browser, it takes me back to igoogle and latitude works.
Installed yesterday, working like a charm. Like a couple others have mentioned, it only gives me the download if I use PIE.
It's really pretty cool, especially the "exit but hidden" feature. I hate having anything in my task list
I'm running into a ton of bugs with this, on the PRoven 1.14a ROM.
THe first time I run it, all is fine. But the second time, I get a lot of nonsense in the menus. The left softkey says "your phone number" or "los angeles," depending on which screen I'm on, then brings up functions that don't seem to make any sense ...
If I uninstall, then reinstall, all is fine the first time I run it. And it goes wacky the second time again.
Here's the cab if anyone wants it.
This is an awesome feature...wife and i tested it today. Now my two oldest kids (sitting on WM devices) can't get away with the stuff my wife and I did when they start high school next year. I am so happy I'm not old. I'm such a ninja father!

I installed latitude but i'm the only one on the map (i know i don't have any friends. but it would be nice to look where my kids are.
Then it will be Xmas tomorrow, they get a nice wm machine
Installed it and it works like a charm. Combined with the new radio (for better GPS locking), its an awesome application.
Thanks!
<shameless plug>It's included in viBranZeOS 1.0 ROM</shameless plug>

Phone tracking

Hi, I did a simple tracking application to know the phone location if I lose it or it gets stolen.
I'd like to have some thoughts and suggestions, so if someone wants to try it just download it here
Thank you!
post it and let us check it out man, so we can tell you if it is worth anything or not
Any tracking program is going to be easy to bypass...
Alt+W
Turn of GPS
Latitude is the same deal, if you wipe, you lose the log in information on the phone and therefore, it can no longer be tracked.
That being said, the only "true" way to have something like this work (regardless of sim cards/wipes) would be to somehow track the phone by IMEI/SN through a combination of internet usage, cell towers, and GPS. Even though the GPS being turned off is a possible work-around, it renders the phone much less useful. It would also need to be installed with an update so that wipes are useless.
well, personally i have rooted my g1 and installed the app in /system/app, so i think a factory reset shouldn't delete it (am i right?). and gps and network location are automatically enabled for a 60 seconds location scan, then taken back to the previous state.
if you want to check it out, i have put everything here.
all suggestions are welcome!

Says Installation Unsuccessful. Tries to copy over "Android System"
ADP1.1 RC33
interesting. i'll try to do a fresh install on both my g1 and the emulator.
What sort of unique features can the app offer?
Currently I'm using GPS Tracker, which is supplied by instamapper.com, and it allows me to have a website such as this: http://thrash-tracker.co.cc/
If my phone gets lost or stolen, I can just check that website.
I released an application on the Market called Phone Finder. It will email you at a custom frequency (default 1 day) with it's location.
tried it but it didn't work.
ADP1.1h.
I'll give it a try. I'm currently using Where's My Android... but sometimes it says that I don't have a data connection. Not very reliable.
ThrashWolf: about instamapper, a user who's trying my app said: "the thing tht I like the most is that if someone where to steal it they wouldn’t know its tracking, unlike the Gps tracker from Instamapper that lets them know its tracking".
However I'll try their service and see what they offer
Koush: i'm a klaxon user and i love it, will install your app as soon as i find it on the market!
mrjay: could you please be more specific? didn't install? thank you very much
i installed it, run it, got to the username/password creation window and after that nothing is happening. i restarted the phone and still nothing i try to run the application and no result. the screen is flickering for a second trying to load the application and that's all.
that's how it works! i designed it to be just a service that runs in the background, you install and it does its work without user interaction.
have you tried to login to the website to see your location and modify settings?
I added some features like activation via sms. Info&download, as usual, on www.trackdroid.org
now i get it. i logged in and watched last entries. looks promising
thanks! if you have suggestions about features to add, just let me know
i was using on my old WM phones this application and i really miss it. maybe you can inspire from this application.

[Q] App for sending and receiving SMS from PC over 3G ??

I have seen few apps that are capable of doing this over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB. But I am more interested in something that can do it over 3G. At work my desktop PC is not on a wireless network; there is Wi-Fi but on a spate subnet with no easy access to the main network. I do have Bluetooth / USB on my main desktop but I work from different PCs therefore its not very convenient for me to pair/connect it each time I go to a different PC. And I don’t use Wi-Fi at home either.
Then there are other benifits to using 3G like I can still access the phone even if I forget it somewhere (i.e at home in the car etc). The new HTC Sense services for HTC Desire HD will have remote access to SMS, call and location information , which is exactly what I'm after. But for now SMS alone is enough.
I came across one App called SMS2PC which can connect to a computer over 3G. But from what I gathered, with that the phone connects to the PC and pushes notifications, not the other way around. This is not going to work for me because at work I am behind a corporate firewall, so my phone cannot access the desktop.
Any other solutions ??
EDIT : i know SMS backup can backup text messages to google, but I can't reply from there. So that wont help much. And I'm not in US, therefore I dont have access to Google Voice service, so replying through that is not going to work either.
Is Google Voice avilable to you (specifically, you will need a Google Voice phone number)? If so, that will be my recommendation. In addition to free SMS and visual voice mail, you can use your Google Voice anywhere that you have access to a web browser. It doesn't have to be your phone.

I wonder why no one has made such an app so far.
Maybe I'll have to write my own.. haven't done any android programing yet, guess its about the time.. waiting for a break from work to start playing around with it a bit...

I use smstools. It is in every major repo. However - from your non-technical wording - I assume that you use the gamerz OS (Windos). Worry not, you can easily compile the program yourself, or google for binaries.

Yes, I use Windows mostly . Thanks for that link, but I don't think thats quite what I want either. That seems to use the phone as a modem to send and receive SMSs; which means I'll have to connect the phone to a PC locally (i.e USB, IR, BT etc..).
I'm looking for a solution that allows me to connect to the phone remotely over the internet (phone online on 3G) to access and send messages. A setup where there is a PC client which polls the phone periodically for new messages and a server running on the phone allowing the PC client to gain access to its messaging service. So I don't have to connect/disconnect every time when changing PCs, it will also allow me to connect even when the phone is not with me (left behind at home / car ).
Ah, I got it now!
Well, of course you could compile SMSTOOLS for your phone
Or take a look at RemoteSMS or similar apps!
Also possible to remote control your handset via vnc-server. That one has far more possibilities than remote SMS-ing...

I’m coming from Windows development side, so pardon me for my ignorance on Linux dev. But from the little I know, you can't compile Unix/C code to Android, am I wrong ? At least not in a straightforward manner... You can only develop apps using their customized Java (Dalvic) , right
Even if its possible, I think developing an app from ground up is far more easier than trying to integrate smstools in to android. Besides, that doesn't solve my problem at all, because accessing the phone from the PC is the issue, and I don't see how running smstools on the phone is going to solve that.

RemoteSMS only works over Wi-Fi and BT, no 3G support .
I guess remote desktop is one solution, but I prefer a much simpler app. Besides VNC will not send me any notifications, I have to manually check. ..
Looks like I'll have to write my own app for this . Havent done any android development yet, looks like this is going to be my first project..

You don't need to be in the US to get a Google Voice account or use it for SMS. I am in Canada and use it for SMS all the time.

Linux is a kernel, and Android is a Linux kernel based operating system. You can compile anything (that compiles for GNU/Linux for the given architecture) for Android/Linux as well. It will be native code however (as opposed to DALVIK, which is VM code). You have the option to cross-compile on your PC, or to compile code right on your phone. It is a command line affair... not some nice one-click task.
BTW I did not see in their own advert, that RemoteSMS would be limited to wifi... you sure? (Would be pretty weird move from them, since communicating over wifi and 3G is not really different from the programmer's point of view)
Found this today , posted on XDA : talkmyphone.
