The android core and core apps will force close from time to time (the same thing happens on the iPhone, before people start *****ing), not really a lot we can do about it.
If you want to root there are plenty of guids available. Have a look in the in the "informative links" thread. The "one click" method is the easiest.

if nothing will work on the phone and you can't get any data then the best thing to do would be to follow this guide. if you can get data or have an app called terminal emulator and type su into it. if you get back anything other permission denied then this will be easier.
edit:damn shouldn't pm while trying to answer questions lol

ok hopefully i dont brick...i had a dash that went fine i had a iphone i jail broke and unlock that 2 and also psp lol dont know if that counts but yeah

goody your phone is rooted. go here and download the latest stable version. rename it to update.zip (if your using windows just update), then power your phone down, hold home and power to boot into recovery, select the options to apply update.zip from sdcard (alt+s) then when it is finished flashing, hold home and back to reboot the phone. then wait for it to boot up

bro idk when i get into it
it does not tell me anything im trying to do this fast get back to me
can you walk me threw step by step

for starters download the rom from the first download link on that link i gave you in my previous post.
plug your phone up to your computer or use a card reader to transfer the file onto your sdcard. once the file is on your sdcard, rename it to update.zip or if your using windows just rename it to update.
unmount your phone your computer or take the sdcard out of the card reader.
power your phone down.
once your phone has powered down, hold home+power to boot your phone up into recovery. this is what my recovery screen looks like

once your get into recovery, if you see nothing on the screen, don't worry just open up the keyboard and press alt+l this will reveal the commands you can do if there are no commands.
once you can see commands on your screen, press alt+s to the apply the update.zip on your sdcard.
after you press alt+s some text will come up showing the progress it is making flashing the rom.
when it is finished flashing the rom (this is how it looks on my phone when it is done flashing something)
press home+back to reboot the phone
the initial boot up of the phone can take up to 15 minutes, but if it last longer than that you should press send+menu+power to reboot the phone and hold home to boot into recovery
once into recovery press alt+w to wipe your phone, then reflash your rom using the steps above.
this is how you flash a rom

dude i just did it and the phone still does not let make phone calls so yeah i flashed the phone and im trying to make a phone call i have the g1 plan and everything lol i cant get text or get any calls or make calls it tells me
the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly.please try again then i lose my service and it reconnects -_-

Maybe you have a bad download, or just try a different rom, obviously you have the danger spl or else you couldn't be running the xrom, so we can count that out.

This sounds stupid but I did it once in my flash 3 times a day phase, make sure you spelled update.zip correctly and it's not udpate.zip or update.zip.zip or something like that.

Em isnt a issue cuz i use cyans newest recovery, where i choose which .zip file to flash.
We really need a log..
First off, you need to "cd" to the directory where the sdk is located on your hard drive. Have you ever used adb before?

Lol i have, i use it all the time. Im guessing the kernel isnt loading n because of tht i cant get a log. I do adb log but it just quits. Also i tried fastboot erase cache n userdata n then tried flashing again same thing. Created a ext partition in the thoughts tht maybe this rom needs apps2sd to work, samething nothing. After leaving it at first bootscreen went into recovery to see maybe some files were copied over to ext partition. Nope. Agh i hate this.
I am not sure why this is going on but I my self have flashed back and fourth from xROM to cm-4.0.4 with no problems on both fresh install and just a reg install and I have not had any problems bro I know you have been having this problem for a while and not sure why ill look into did you try that double flash like we did one time and it worked?
Just now went back to rc29 n redid the whole rooting process. After that i flashed cyan 4.0.4 and at first bootscreen it stayed for like 10-15sec then rebooted n now i have the same problem. Aghhh !!!!!
Oh n i flashed xRom 1.4. n in a matter of secs i c stuff appear when i "adb logcat". So xRom 1.4 works fine....
I hate this....agh !!!!!
So i convinced Manup to send me his img files. So he nandroided n then sent me those files. I did
fastboot flash boot boot.img
userdata data.img
system system.img
Worked fine....booted n fully.
Then did a wipe and now im getting this log error n after 2nd bootscreen im faced with a plain black screen with backlight.
I attached a log.
i see no checkin service being thrown up right before all the things die.
might have something to do with the build prop. when you boot with manup's files adb pull the build.prop and put it into the rom your flashing and sign it then try to flash it. i really don't know though. have you mentioned this to cyanogen?

Hey, em isnt build.prop rom specific ? so if he gives me his build.prop its from the update.zip the same one i downloaded ? i pm'd cyan a while back no reply though. I just feel the kernel isnt loading.(im talkin about if i install from update.zip and not from manup's imgs)
I dont know i'm not that technical. You could try replacing the boot.img in the update.zip with the one manup sent you. Have you tried posting that log in cyanogen's thread?

Ye lol, ppl just scim over it....so to clarify
If i flash from update.zip (it doesnt boot just stays on first screen n no adb **** works)
If i fastboot manup's images they work fine
If i wipe after fastboot imgin manups images i get the log posted above...
GOD HELP ME....or cyan/other members lol

[Q] Frozen at boot screen

i just bought the captivate off my friend for 150 the problem is when you turn the phone the screen stays on the att world phone screen and then you can hear sound but the screen stays the same and it doesnt change so i was wondering if there is a way to fix this
Do you know if your friend kept it stock?
honestly i have no clue but i believe he did
Sounds like he didn't and that's why he sold it so cheap. Go to this thread and get the tools you will be needing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439. Install the drivers then download the .zip and extract the files, download the pda.tar. Run Odin as administrator put the pda.tar in the pda slot and the pit file in the pit slot.
Next power off the phone and remove the SIM, your external sd card and battery. Plug the usb cable into the computer only then press and hold the volume up and down buttons at the same time, don't touch power, put the battery in and plug the usb into the phone. You should be in download mode, Odin should see your phone push start and let Odin run. This will take you to a working phone, just like it was when it came from AT&T.
Good luck and let us know if it works.
First of can you should never have paid him for the phone if it wasn't fully working when you got it.
Second can you get into download mode? If so then get the one click odin and flash back to stock and you will have a working phone. If you can't get into download mode then demand your money back from him and drop him as a friend.

I linked him to c3poLOL's Odin package instead that way if he has a borked three button combo this will fix that too. I agree, not a good friend, sounds like he soft bricked it before selling it. Should be fixable and then it's a steal, if it was off contract.
You sure he is a friend
Captivate
Cog 2.2
this didnt work because the phone did not show up on my computer even after i installed the drivers and odin
Try using a different usb port on your pc, one in the back where the motherboard is, perhaps you need more power, I've seen this happen. Are you familiar with adb? Are you able to get into download or recovery mode using the three button combo. ADB will work from the recovery screen.
I had the same issue today someones rom screwed up my phone and it would boot up with sound, but be stuck at the att screen. Wasnt able to activate download mode with buttons or adb, because permissions werent granted. So my advice for anyone else that has this problem get superoneclick to root your device and get permissions ( I used Z4 root which i will never do again) and run cmd.exe type in the path you have for example mine was C:\Users\PEGLEG\android-sdk-windows\tools\adb shell (modify it for where you have yours, then type in reboot download, and you should get into the download screen where odin will fix your device.
my phone is also "frozen" at a boot up screen.

Thanks, but I have already read this tutorial. And my problem is not only windows 7 64 bits. Is with windows xp 32 bits too. I tried every way, but nothing works. I hope someone can help me to solve this. Today i cant test with linux, but tomorrow I'll test. At least I can change between the mods, like cm7 and shadowmod cause i dont have to flash nothing to do this, is only apply a uptade.zip
Ok. Now I'm really lost! I tried with a live cd from ubuntu. But i got this error:
Waiting for phone: Segmentation fault (core dumped).
I think the problem is with my phone. Maybe there is a problem with my bootloader, i dont know! When I turn on my phone with the power+X appears only the exclamation inside a triangle and one picture of a phone. After i do vol up+ camera button appears:
Andoird system recovery <2e>
Use d-pad to highlight; center to select.
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
This last line is a problem? Or use a live cd was my problem? A nandroid backup can save me? I tried, but maybe all of my backups are with this problem. Can someone, please, upload a Nandroid backup from CM7, preferably with only the stock things. Please help me, with you do no how to help, if you know someone who can help, i beg you to tell him my problem. I thank everyone who helped so far.
And please pardon me for my horrible english!

If you are able to boot into AOR then you already have a VR installed.
Oh wait. You want to go BACK to Froyo? What bootloader version do you have?

That's the question! I don't know how to check that!
Boot into Bootloader mode and the first line should tell you what version your bootloader is.
Maybe there is a problem with my bootloader, i dont know! When I turn on my phone with the power+X appears only the exclamation inside a triangle and one picture of a phone. AND THERE IS NOTHING!!!
Please confirm me, Bootloader screen is when you press power + X button right? And recovery screen is when you press vol up + camera right?

There's your problem! To get into bootloader you need to hold the power button and d-pad up!
When you hold power+x, you are going into recovery mode, the vol-up+camera button is only to display the menu.
Use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11902513&postcount=7
And you can get the sbf from here: http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone221
I believe the service version wipes all data.

That's probably because you need bootloader mode only for flashing sbf's. All custom roms only need recovery mode. It must have a while since you flashed a stock sbf. Anyway, just to point out that if you are planning on flashing a custom rom after flashing the stock sbf, you will need to flash the vulnerable recovery before you can get into recovery mode.
Good luck.

Tutorial: how to unbrick your phone

Bricked my phone after trying out CM7 and then flashing Stock ROM via KDZ_FW_UPD without wiping all data.
Found a way how to fix my problem. This should work for almost all bricked phones.
Remember, this will wipe ALL DATA from your phone. I'm not responsible if something happens with your P970. Do at your own risk.
You will need:
Drivers for P970;
KDZ_FW_UPD_EN
UpTestEX_mod2_marwin
WindowsEnablerv1.1
Download
Start from here if it's first time (no drivers installed, etc):
1) Install all drivers (from Drivers folder);
2) Disable LGE Virtual Modem (Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager);
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Start from here if drivers already installed:
3) Run msxml.msi (in KDZ_FW_UPD folder);
4) Delete mfc42.dll (from KDZ_FW_UPD folder);
5) Run WindowsEnabler.exe and set it to ON;
6) Run UpTestEX_mod2_marwin.exe;
7) Set your phone to S/W Upgrade mode (take out battery, while pressing Volume Up, plug USB cable).
1) Select KDZ file (download from here);
2) Click "CSE web upgrade test", then "Upgrade Start".
Chose your language and wait till phone reboots. It will take some time and could look like nothing is going on. If you see something similar to this (on your phone) for a moment, everything went OK.
maaaaaaaaaaaaan em trying it right now.....let u know as soon as i see some results
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
---------- Post added at 01:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:07 PM ----------
"YES" it really works!!!
Thanks a billion times man! You saved my life
(for everyone else who is trying to follow this TUT...when i was updating it was stuck at 4% and showed a lot of errors in the log below...but i guess that didnt matter and now it works...that screen at the end is really must...and i had to force close the update tool after my phone was working)
I think this is solution for ALL BRICKED P970s that can enter into S/W Upgrade mode!!!
Very important is that this method do HARD RESET after flashing firmware so it could UNBRICK ALL of our phones.
Can anyone with bricked phone (not CM7 brick) can test it?
I a little bit edited tutorial and, yeah, it could help for all bricked phones. We just need someone who could test it out.
I linked it at RC's G+ and RootzWiki, in response to those bricking their OB's in regards with CM7. Hope they could give us feedbacks.

cool, finally a method that can do "hard reset" without a running system or a recovery installed !!
LG would have implement the hard reset in his Recovery in the B2CAppSetup ! it would avoid lots of send back to LG customer service !!
Thanks

No, LG would have implement the recovery key combination... It would be remedy for almost all P970 bricks...
Does anybody knows another phone with Android without hardware key combination for recovery?
Is it even possible that hardware key combination (changing bootloader) will be possible to add-on by official LG firmware update? Maybe they should do this with official 2.3 upgrade, but it is probably only dream...
PS. I forgot to thanx, ziiljuks, you're the man!
yes, recovery combination key would be better ^^
ps: I think x8 doesn't have it either
quote from rootzwiki: "adb.exe reboot recovery saved my life!!!!"
i guess we can boot into recovery with this command. i didn't know that adb environment can run with bootloop or volume up screen... can anybody confirm this?

No, it can't. You need to boot to OS and have enabled Debugging to get ADB working.
I was trying it many times when I bricked my phone. Look HERE.
It seems very good work! But i just bought my phone, i have not fllash my rom yet, since i am afraid that flashing will damage my warranty forever. Could shut body tell
Me whether there is ANY means to recover the warranty........

yes, by reflasing stock rom !
CSE means CS_EMERGENCY
I think this does the same if you select the CS_EMERGENCY mode on KDZU.

Nope. Tried that when I bricked my phone couple of weeks ago.
EDIT:
Tested it 5 mins. ago with CS_EMERGENCY in KDZU, and no. No hard resetting.
hmm I should test this tool again. I previously gave up that because it has never worked, until I know those kdz files must keep their name
i dont get the "CSE web upgrade test" button in the UpTestEX_mod2_marwin window.
any ideas?
tried normal upgrade but dosnt make the factory reset and keep geting boot loop.
yes another victim of CM/ > Stock
ok found it. in the type has to be in CDMA not 3GQCT
Hello,man.
There's some problems in using this method.
A guy does the upgrade,and the phone is stuck at 4% too. But unlike the situation u've met, there's not even a error in the log. Then , he has to switch off the USB(means disconnect the phone and the PC. sorry, my English is... - -#). I wanna know how much time does the upgrading process takes. Thanks.
Meanwhile ,there's another guy. He did the same thing .And the phone reboots finally. But what confuses me is that he didn't get the picture on the screen. Could you explain , thanks in my heart!
And thanks ziiljuks very much!
maybe a corrupted kdz file, try to re-download another.

Download THIS package. It has all the files in one folder. Unpack it to C:\ You should get C:\P970_unbrick\*files here*
Install msxml.msi, then run Windows Enabler.exe and click on its icon in the taskbar. Icon will change and will show "ON". Then run UpTestEX_mod2_marwin.exe and do the rest of the job.

When i followed this tut my update process was stuck at 4% and actually it "didn't" flash the stock rom...(although it was already flash before my the KDZU tool) this tool simply after giving alot of errors in the log file did a hard reset (that last screen---which actually does the magic by formatting the data partition). After that screen my phone restarted and BINGO i was at the setup wizard! then i closed the tool bcz it was stuck but my phone was working

I just flashed new Touch Recovery from Rom Manager, anyone knows a possible way to flash it with fastboot?
Thanks,
Tiwiz
Here is the touch recovery with the scripts to flash it from windows mac or linux:
http://www.mediafire.com/?mrb142a45ukom3b
you can include it in the first post.
Don't like the BIG fonts in the recovery , you can't see all of the text of the zip files.

I quite liked it untill I failed to find a way to "power off"... Back to 5.0.2.8 for now.
Edit: But thanks The touch interface itself was a treat. The design made the direct "place finger on chosen option" approach, a little too clunky; but absolutely functional.
The real treat, was being able to use my touch buttons, rather than the mechanical power/volume buttons at the side and top of my phone.
Just a shame that there is'nt an option to shut down the phone for those of us with rebooting issues.

Umm.. wouldn't you likely reboot the phone after flashing something?

Yes, but rebooting seems to drastically increase the chances of my phone, not detecting my external SD card.
So CWM for me is something like:
1: Turn off phone ----> Pow + Vol = CWM
2: Power off when done with CWM
3: Turn phone back on.
Reboot and I'm going to have to have to shut down the phone regardless, because my external SD is'nt being detected.
I suspect it's because CWM mounts storage in one way, CM in another and LG stock in a third way; some sort of mounting information is carried over when rebooting and my storage management bugs out.

i also have this problem but when you are booted in the rom just reinsert your sdcard and it will be mounted no big deal for me
Isn't it more simple to have a power off option?
Opening your phone each time you perform a soft reboot...

I also have this "problem" but when booted phone after CWM no need to reinsert sdcard, just rebooted once more and everything`s fine. Today I`ll try new touch CWM.

I'd still prefer for power off to be implemented into CWM Touch.
Shutting it down and turning it back on is faster than rebooting and it's not an option with RAMhack kernels either.

No need for wipe, it should work on any cwm.
Alright, I flashed it and everything works fine! Thanks again mate!

I had the same problem and followed your method in earlier CWM. But with new CWM Touch, external SD card mounts ok when directly rebooted into system. No problem after 5/6 rebooting. Try and see.
