Can't update Radio - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 2.22.19.26I on my phone now from the sapphire site. I read where the google 2.22.19.26I fixes the audio issue.
When I try to update zip, it seems to update fine but then asks for a reboot to complete, it reboots get's to formatting cache.... and just hangs.

Mine does the same thing but it's not frozen, Just press Home+Back to reboot again and you have your new radio.

...and keep in mind when you hit Home+Back at that point... you'll see the rest of the update process occur, which shows a graphic depicting the radio being flashed to the phone. That's when the radio is actually flashed. It should then boot back into Recovery.

SPL doesn't install

Hi all
I tried to install latest SPL (1.33.2005) on my G1
I think I tried to flash it 10 times , using 5 different guides, in all cases the outcome is the same - i receive notification that the install went kwel, but the SPL just does not install.
I'm currently running Engineering SPL - HBOOT-0.95.3000 (I thought at first that maybe I have to install HardSPL first and only then go for 1.33.2005, but based on what I found on the Net that's not required.
Also I'm using 1.3.1 CYanogenMod recovery , I've thought that I need to downgrade my recovery in order to install the SPL , and once again , found out it's not correct.
I'm flashing the bloody 26i radio every time , downloading the SPL from HAYKURO site, wiping , installing the same version after the SPL as I had before, rebooting into recovery when I should , waiting for 10 minutes before puling the battery out when it stuck on G1 screen ,you name it.
Method 1
1) Place Radio 26i on sdcard , change to update.zip , reboot in recovery , flash it , reboot back into recovery (automatic), reboot normal
2) Place SPL on sdcard , change to update.zip , reboot in recovery, flash it (it take 3 seconds and give notification that install is finished)
3) Still in recovery, remove sdcard , place sdcardN2 (with CYanogenMod rom named update.zip , like the one I had before).
4) Still in recovery, open console , reboot manually to recovery (no auto reboot, have to reboot by "reboot recovery").
4) Flash the CYanogenMod , reboot
ALL WORK, NO SPL
Method 2
1) Place Radio 26i on sdcard , change to update.zip , reboot in recovery , flash it , reboot back into recovery (automatic), reboot normal
2) Place SPL on sdcard , change to update.zip , reboot in recovery, flash it (it take 3 seconds and give notification that install is finished) , open console , reboot manually to recovery (no auto reboot).
3) Reboot normally - Stuck on G1 screen.
4) Take the battery out , remove sdcard ,place sdcard N2 (with CYanogenMod rom named update.zip , like the one I had before).
5) Return the battery , boot in recovery , flash the rom , reboot normally
ALL WORK, NO SPL
SO what can go wrong ? Any1 ? What am I missing ?
Your sure its not installing, as in your bootloader doesnt show 1.33.2005? Or your not sure, and it just gets stuck on g1 screen every time?

I always get to install my original version eventually , but on checking the bootloader , it show me the old SPL I had
BEFORE you do any of this make sure your have a PVT boar. Well why are you flashing your old bootloader? after the new spl says its complete, reboot, it will get stuck on g1 screen, I AM ALMOST positive you can pull the battery now and then put sd in with rom. Put battery back in and power on holding home to get to recovery. Flash rom and then reboot. After all of this once your rom is up and running, power on into bootloader and see if it says 1.33.2005.

This thread has the best instructions imo.

Yep , tried that as well.
Got PVT , flashed SPL , rebooted into never-ending G1 screen , took the battery out , switched to sdcard with rom , placed battery back , booted in recovery , flashed rom , rebooted - all fine, rom running but still old SPL in bootloader
Darn
maybe you need the hardspl before you can do it?
see if you can flash another SPL like HardSPL

I was actually hoping to have some confirmation regarding this point , actually , from what I found on the Net it's not required , but who believes the NET ?
When you flash the spl it should complete the flash and then you home+back to reboot. The phone should reboot and then you should see a box with an arrow. Then it will reboot again. This is where it will stick at the g1 screen. That's where you pull the battery and flash your build again. Did you see the box with the arrow?
try to use the actual button rather than use trackball. like alt+s to update rather than choosing the update menu using trackball.
i've heard people having this problem if they are on cyna recovery. Go back to JF recovery image before flashing SPL.

Was just about to say the same. Its been widely reported that you have to flash this spl from jf's recovery.

Just my observation on this. If you get stuck on g1 screen, which I did, you can wipe your phone without reinstalling the ROM. The next reboot will take 5-10 mins, but it will boot up fine.

SOLVED !!!!!!
The problem was in CYA 1.3.1 recovery , JF recovery worked like a charm
Thank you thank you thank you all.

That's wierd lol. Friend just flashed it on Cyan's recovery
I just flashed to jachero last night. I thought i had the most up to date spl but was getting an error. My problem was not mounting the sdcard before the push. After i did that it installed fine and im using Cya recovery.
You couldn't have installed JACHero without the latest spl, SPL: 1.33.2005

Yes i realize.. i thought i had it.. but did not. So i had to update that first and that fixed my error so i could install JACHero. My main point was that i could push just fine in adb with Cyanogen's recovery.

first boot into bootloader(camera and home) and see if you have a white screen with 3 skating androids.
if you do then you have the hard spl.
sometimes when you flash a spl it will wipe your phone.
if you do have the hard spl just go ahead and flash whatever rom you want to use.
if you don't have a card reader go into the recovery console and type ums_enable to mount your sdcard and put the rom on your sdcard then type ums_disable to unmount the sdcard, then finally type reboot recovery and when it boots up flash your rom.
That did it David just uploaded CM 4.0.4 and its up and running. You have been alot of help tonight, kick you a little something for your help...
wait , you push alt-s, are you still using the orignal recovery, do yourself a favor and flash cm recovery 1.4, nandroid backup and restore, flash any zip.

I was having the same issue... ( I have the pimped recovery as well)
The first couple times I tried, I was getting no changes to the spl...
I tried one more time, wiped to be sure, proceeded to install spl
I then made it to same point, "formatting cache..."
I decided to start the reboot process and quickly pressed
"cam + power" when the screen went black and BAM,
got the 3 skateboarding androids
and it says "HSPL 10.95.3000"
I then reinstalled latest Cyan, and partitioned the sdcard with sdparted.txt

I am trying to unroot my friend's G1... I found a tutorial on XDA (link) and it worked fine without any problems on my phone, however when I go into recovery mode (CyanogenMod v1.4+JF) and I hit Alt+S, it starts to install the update.zip and it reboots and starts up in recovery and gets stuck on Formatting CACHE:... I've let it sit for quite a while and still nothing. I can reboot the phone, but it just starts back up in the rooted mod. When I start into the bootloader (camera+power), it's not the three android's on skateboard, it's the colored screen, and it doesn't give me the option to install DREAIMG.nbh file. I'm not quite sure what to do, especially since I had absolutely no problem testing this tutorial on my own phone.
EDIT: I figured out that the bootloader is downgraded and working. Now when I load the bootloader, it goes to the grey screen and says Loading... No image found! I have searched the forums and google for a solution to this program and so far nothing I've found is working. I've reformatted my SD card many times to FAT32, as well as redownloaded the DREAIMG.nbh file... Any help would be great!
EDIT 2: I'm not sure what the problem was or what I did to get it to work, but after formatting over and over and downloading and redownloading, and trying different SD cards, it finally started to work.
Ok. I have done everything that was suggested up above. I also get the 3 android skateboarders and I have tried to install the new
[ROM] CyanogenMod - Keeping You Legal For Less (STABLE) [UPDATED 10/31 - v4.2.3.1]
Which installs just fine. But then I reboot the device and it continues to be stuck on the G1 Splash Screen.
I can verify that I updated the Radio first and confrimed it was updated then updated the SPL and got formatting cache and waited like 15 mins and then now I am stuck.
So I what david1171 suggested and still nothing.
Any suggestions would be nice.
Thanks

Stuck at G1 screen, PLEASE HELP!

Okay, so I know what everyone says, "make sure you know what you're doing before you update to Danger SPL." So I read and re-read all the forums and guides about various problems and how to avoid them and how to flash the radio and SPL, THEN after I was comfortable I decided to go for it.
So here is my issue:
I used the two sd card method. After wiping, I flashed the radio to 2.22.19.26I, then rebooted. I wiped again and flashed the SPL to 1.33.2005, took out the SD card and put the other one in. I rebooted from console (using command "reboot recovery"), wiped again, and flashed CM 4.2.10.1 and rebooted. After this final reboot it sticks at the G1 screen and doesn't do anything beyond here. I also tried reflashing everything and formatting the new SD card, then loaded the CM version with RA's USB-MS mode and flashed it. Same effect, stuck on G1 screen.
I still have access to the recovery image as well as fastboot and the screen with the androids on the scateboards (bootloader? I'm niot sure). WIth those things in mind, I don't think I have bricked anything, but of course that doesn't help the fact that I can't use the phone. Any help here would be AWESOME.
ROM: CM-4.2.10.1
recovery image: RA-dream-v1.5.0
Android screen reads:
DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA10000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.26I

ALSO I hope a thread with an answer doesnt already exist, I did search for quite a while for a solution but couldn't find one. Thanks again to anyone who can help me out.
Just checking cause you didn't mention this step but before flashing Cyanogen 4.2.10.1 did you flash the HTC ADP image??
Have you tried flashing any other ROM's??
Since you still have recovery && bootloader you're not in a terrible position, you're not bricked, just gotta find out where you're going wrong

Snab a copy of cyanogen's rom (update.zip) and recovery image (on the forums)
Boot the phone into fastboot (power off, hold camera button and power on)
Code:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
this should insure that you have a proper recovery image.
boot into recovery mode now (you can press the menu button to power off the device from the SPL menu, then hold the HOME button and power on the device)
Code:
adb devices
you may need to do this a couple times until it shows up, once adb reports your device is available
Code:
adb shell mount /sdcard
adb push update.zip /sdcard
then press ALT+S (or select the option from the menu using your wheel)
let the rom flash.
when it's complete, reboot your device (HOME+BACK) or just use the menu again.
it should now boot.. if it takes a bit longer than usual, check if the device is active using:
Code:
adb devices
if your device is listed, see if it's actually doing something using
Code:
adb logcat
if you see a bunch of "E/" followed by text, your phone is erroring out and you may have to report back here for further assistance, if you see a bunch of "apks" and "jars" flying by, your phone is booting it's just checking signatures most likely.

ADP image? I did the steps exactly as I described them. Should I have flashed HTCs ADP image? I guess so, if thats what I did to get CM in the first place. Is that the image that puts all the Google Apps on the phone? Also, if I'm getting CM v4.2.10.1 from the website, and I'm coming from a new radio and SPL, should I have to treat it as though I'm not updating and am coming from a freshly rooted phone?
and @haykuro, I'll try that as soon as I get the time.
Before you flash Cyanogen for the first time you need to flash HTC's ADP image
Check out the Cyanogen's Wiki for a full guide on installing his rom
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Since you've already gotten as far as getting a custom recovery skip down to the section called "File Download" and continue on, that should get you on the right track
Yes that is the image that get's you all the Google Apps
Yes after installing the 1.33.2005 SPL you have to reinstall a fresh ROM

Worked like a charm! Kinda makes me feel like an idiot though for not thinking about needing to treat it like a fresh install instead of an update, but I'm glad it worked!
Also, thanks for how quick you helped me out! I was only without my G1 for maybe 5 hours!

Dream Stuck in SPL Boot Loop

I posted this in the "Brick" thread but I have not garnered any attention and IRC has moved too fast to get any reliable help.
Hello,
I've done some searching and I cannot find any definitive answers to my problem.
I was on CM 4.2.9.1 and tried to upgrade to 4.2.10.1 and had a bad flash (stuck at android boot). I noticed there was a new update, 4.2.11.1 the next morning and thought I would wipe completely and update from RC29. I downloaded all the files necessary and used spl to downgrade to RC29 which booted fine. From there I got root and started the upgrade part. I installed the RArecovery 1.5.2 which went fine. I then installed the defanged HTC recovery image and CM 4.2.11.1 then the newest radio and rebooted. That went directly back to the RA recovery after installing the radio. From there I installed the Hard SPL. After that finished and rebooted the phone booted to the Hard SPL or the recovery image.
Thinking I had messed something up I though I could start over and try again. I then booted to the SPL bootloader and flashed the RC29 DREAIMG.NBH to start over.
After that completed the phone will only boot to the SPL bootloader, which is now the original SPL. I have tried to flash the DREAIMG.NBH multiple times with the same result. When holding down Home and Power I get the ! screen.
Is my phone bricked? Or is there an image that I can flash to save it?
Thanks for any help.

Does it boot up into RA recovery? from there you can flash any zip... If you got root and the right radio and SPL. Put the latest Cyan on your SD and boot into recovery and flash away... If you can get it to recovery you are not bricked...
Okay... i reread... may be beyond my limited knowledge...
3rd time... I would pop out your SD and put recovery.img fromhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480... and make sure HardSPL is on there... when you boot into recovery and get the "!" hit ALT-L to get the menu... then ALT-S to apply the update.zip(HardSPL)... heck just follow the steps from the link above...
GOOD LUCK
No recovery at all. I'm assuming it was flashed back to RC29 specs.
You're not bricked because you can boot into SPL. You still have a recovery image on there, not that it's a good one, it's just a basic HTC recovery. What you do have is a hardware problem with you camera button most likely. See if you can blow some compressed air in there, try tapping it a little bit, it may fix it.
Good luck
I got stuck in a bad situation like this a bit ago...
If nothing else, you should still be able to get the dreaming.nbh on there, upgrade to donut and then reroot.
It's not a problem with the camera button as I can still get to the SPL and flash the DREAIMG.nbh.
The DREAIMG.nbh flashes fine, everything gets an ok, but when I restart the phone it boots directly to the SPL.
Just a quick update:
I've gotten a hold of a different micro sdcard than the one that I was using in hopes that some weird formatting error was happening with my old card. Alas, even with this new and freshly formatted card the DREAIMG.nbh will still not take correctly. All parts report ok while flashing, but my phone still boots directly to the SPL on startup.
Can anyone help?
Im having the same problem, but I can get into recovery, sd only has an fat partition, I made a thread here, can the Mods delete it

[RESOLVED] G1 hangs on boot, with lots of extra info

I have a G1 with CyanogenMod 1.4 recovery and the original SPL. It boots into either of those just fine.
When I select to apply any zip, I get the list of possibilities. I have tried wiping many times.
Whenever I choose an option from the recovery or flash something, a message appears that says
Code:
E: Can't read MISC:
(No space left on device)
This occurs even after a wipe. Also, I know that the SD card is not full or corrupted (I generally use it in a different G1).
After I have flashed something and reboot, it simply hangs at the G1 boot screen. I left it for half an hour, and it stayed that way.
Any thoughts?
what are you trying to flash? rom might require danger spl. i don't have a g1, so i'm not positive, but i'm willing to bet on it.
I actually tried flashing the danger SPL. In spite of saying "reboot to complete installation," I know it does not work. if I hold Camera as I turn on, it is still the original SPL.
Next bet?

1.33.2005 is what the danger spl shows up as, which i believe is your "stock" spl. if you installed it and rebooted without any errors it works. simple and plain.
Does the danger SPL look like the original (RGB color testing)? That is what shows up when I boot with camera pressed.
I was trying to flash either Super D or CyanogenMod, when I follow the instructions for either of them and do the final reboot, it never leaves the G1 logo screen. Yes I know that it is a while for the dalvik-cache to be reworked.
I have flashed roms successfully many times on my other G1.
I am very curious what the error message that I posted earlier means. Thanks for your suggestions!
Sorry for the double post. I have an update. I am pretty sure there is a problem with the NAND chip or something similar. I flashed the Amon_RA recovery, and it worked. I used Amon_RA to wipe, and re-partition the SD card. I then tried flashing the HTC 1.6 image for ADP1. And it worked. It booted into 1.6 with no problem (except that I no longer had root). So I tried to get root again. First I tried the Recovery Flasher app. It said that it failed. So I downloaded the DREAIMG.nbh to get back to RC29. When I ran it, I got
Code:
DREAIMG.nbh - FAIL
Update Terminate
UPDATE FAIL
Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
[RESOLVED]
UPDATE: Apparently that last bit ended with bricking the phone. I took out the SD, put DREAIMG.nbh back on it. Put it back in the phone. Re-flashed from the SPL (holding camera while pressing power). It worked. I then went through with regular rooting, putting Amon_RA on there, with Super D 1.8. Everything smooth. I have no idea what really fixed it, but everything works fine.
