Fastest and most stable Hero Rom? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am going to wipe my G1 and flash one of the Hero roms on it. What is the fastest and most stable of these roms to install after a fresh wipe?
Also, I've noticed on a bunch of them that they advise 30m swap, but in one thread someone said that 90m runs more efficiently. Is this true, and if I create a 90m swap will any of the Hero roms utilize this without any further modifications, or is there a line in a file somewhere that I need to advise the rom that I'll be using 90 instead of 30? Is this recommended?
Thanks,
Bob C.

There are many opinions on which is the fastest and/or more stable. I've had good experiences with JAC's and Drizzy's. Others haven't, the only way to find out for sure is to flash yourself and give it a run.

i wonder the same thing, i like the twistedumbrella version, drizzy and jac both have very good roms

You using 30m swapfile?

I'd wait for the new Drizzy release. Also why didn't you as your question in the Q&A section? The Q stands for question...

My apologies, I sit here reading all these threads and just overlooked where I was posting it to. I'll be more careful in the future.
When is the new Drizzy release scheduled to come out?

Yep, 32MB to be exact and it runs just fine. Then again, keep in mind, I'm not an "App freak", I don't have 100+ apps on my phone, right now I have 21, up from 6-7 from when I was not running apps2sd.

Drizzy is sick right now so not sure when he's gonna be releasing his newest, he pushed out the base of the build to a bunch of devs though so someone might be releasing a variation of it sometime soon. You can follow him on twitter @HeartBreakDrake he always updates there if he's putting something up soon.

Swap
Hi,
Would you recommend having the swap on a 1GB Card.
Will be getting my 8gb Sd in a week. But cant wait and without the swap the phone runs damm slow.

noooo sir a 1 gig card...man thats pushing it. it will most likley be incrediblt laggy. if i were you, dl cyanogen 4.04, then find a nice hero theme until you get your sd card. really.

Help Me Make A Decision

I suppose this is the right place to post this. Because it does say "Dream Q & A"
So here I go. After the first time of rooting my g1 and installing jf's rom and "lite bricking" my g1 from using the apps2sd2 app trying to partition my sd card "which it already was" and then finally flashing back to stock firmeware safely with no hicups
I'm finally deciding to get back onto the "root" wagon and I know there's a couple of roms out there for "advanced" and "nornal" users and (I'm kind of both) I'm wondering
And please don't flame me and say "u have to decide" or "search" because I don't want to pick a rom that's crappy(I'm not saying any of them are crappy) I just don't want a rom with a "dead" dev. And so I'm wondering out of all you guys here, And out of all the roms you've tried, which would you suggest is the best and why you use it so I can kinda see what I'm going to do here.
And please if you have nothing positive to say then don't say it ; )
Cyanogen is the best for me.

i do agree with this point.....even Haykuro admits that he is the one
Cyan's rom is hands down the best period. The constant updates and the fact that he is always around trying to fix things and add great new features.
Cyanogen's Rom FTW. currently at 3.6.2 with updates when needed. I love his rom and with A2SD i get 80mb of free internal space with amazing speeds!
I echo Cyanogen as well, however I've yet to try out Dude's new build with built in hero theme, HTC Music app etc.
There are other ROMs out there as well but it depends on your needs. If you need Exchange support then try one of the Rogers ROMs. If you don't know what Exchange is, then chances are you wouldn't need it so the choice is between Cyanogen and Dudes.
Dude's builds are amazing as well. He doesn't seem to be around that frequently now. I love CM's ROMS but if you want stability, like ABSOLUTE stability, JF all the way.

What is the most stable HERO ROM?

I'm looking for a stable, pure HERO ROM. What I mean by pure is no blur garbage (red colors or bouncing) or custom boot screens. Recently we've had a flood of new HERO ROM's posted by various different people. Ironically, these ROM's have had the exact same issues i.e. flash not working. Which makes me beg the questions, is there just one solid developer of these HERO ROM's and just a bunch of biters? That's neither here nor there. I just want a stable, pure HERO ROM. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ahhh man. I didn't want people's random opinions. I just want the facts. I will try akirah's out. I'm just so sick of flashing hero roms. I think i've flashed all the popular ones. We just got 3-4 new hero roms in the past day or so. Really fast, just the fact that most of them are missing flash is a huge let down. That to me is basic HERO ROM guts.

don't you love these "opinions" saying wait for a port isn't really a solution to a hero rom problem. or is it? i don't know very much, at all. never will.

LOL! Yeah, this akirah hero2 is working out just fine. I like the fact that you can simply upgrade the rom without wiping. It's the first hero rom i've seem to do that. Awesome!
special thanks goes out to brian_v3ntura for recommending hero2 1.51, it is what he has said in almost every hero thread, so i would imagine it to work.
Quick question: Is the problems that I was having in KingKlick's 2.0 ROM
- GPS location not working (thinking my current city was "Denver" - when I'm in AZ)
- Paid applications not showing in market/downloading
Normal of all Hero ROMs? Or should I give some of the other ones a shot?

Alright, I've got this up and running,
I'm just working on the permissions so as the htc widgets work properly, and google apps work.
It runs pretty good though I have to say, for a sense build. Phone.apk lag remains however I'm pretty confident with a renice script it'll be fine.
jamezelle makes a SenseUI build:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=619718
It's ported from the HTC Tattoo.
k I've got this build running great, with the exception of google apps aren't currently working. I've got a line on how to fix them.
So in it's current state which is boot from ext2 or sd card partition only do you guys want me to post it? Or wait till I've got google apps working correctly?
And for a sense build it runs fantastic, probably better than any other sense build you've tried I bet. Certainly better than any I've run.
And yes phone still lags, but run a renice and bet it will be find.
is it installable to sd card or do we have to run it haret
theres always an app to take the place of most google apps
I know this isn't where I belong but any love for kaiser users?
yes installable to sd card, it's an androidinstall.tar..
No sorry no kaiser love, just a beta port at this point.

Gapps not working from SD, is this a problem with eclair? I've run lots of builds from SD, some with ext2 partitions, some not. Mostly I've used Donut lately, but have had Eclair, too. Maps and Gmail have always worked. I never use Google talk. Am I missing something, or are these not gapps? Anyway, I'd like to try your build on ext2 partitions.

Need help. Stuck in "Touch the future" boot loop.

I have a major headache here. I flashed the latest dalingrin OC kernel (5/13) and it would hang on startup. So I tried to use a nookie froyo image on a sd card and get back into ROM Manager and use CWR and try to reinstall everything. Well now its stuck in boot loop on the touch the future screen. I'm reading everything I can but I'm so confused. How can I get into CWR again so I can re-flash everything? I am trying to do the bootable CWR sd card thing but I can't get it to work and I'm really getting frustrated at this whole "img" thing, I can never get it to work. Anysuggestions. and yes I'm still reading...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227 if you haven't yet.
I'm almost in the same boat. I was running stable 7 and decided I wanted Dal's new kernel and figured I'd at least upgrade to 7.03 stable. I was in the reboot loop and now I can't get it to display anything past the "touch the future" screen.
I've formatted the system, data, cache, and installed from scratch with cm7 stable (and tried a nightly too), along with gapps and Dal's latest kernel.
Might just have to leave out the kernel this time and see if it works.
Update- I got mine working with leaving Dal's kernel out. I might just flash the 4/24 now instead or just wait til he puts out something a little more solid than the 5/13.
Dal, if you're reading this, not knocking on you. Thanks for all the work you put in. I have loved having the 1100 kernel.

The 5/13 kernel is NOT for current stable or nightly builds. It's for exclusive use in the Beta 3 CM7 rom at the moment and requires the use of the 1.2 u-loader (read forever).

You still don't understand. 5/13 is rock frickin' solid if you flash it with the correct BETA ROM.
If you flash the 7.1.0 Beta3 found in the CM7 developers thread with the 5/13 kernel you get CM7 as it should be.

except for the renewed sleep of death issues and the spontaneous reboots and the occasional lockups, that have been repeatedly reported, it is a fairly solid beta test build. But it is a development beta test build after all, and very cool one at that. If people choose not to test it that's cool too.

Sorry, I meant to say until the beta is stable. As 12paq has stated, it's not stable enough for me to give it a whirl. I know that it is a lot better though when it's working.
For me, I'll sit this one out for now. Maybe I'll get bored next weekend tho and mess with it.
I still don't get the uloader thing will that need to be changed BEFORE flashing the .32 builds or will flashing those builds take care of that automatically?

I'm also curious. I ended up in the boot loop after trying to use Kernel Manager after updating to 7.0.3 using ROM Manager.
Came here to see what was wrong. Kernel Manager said it was flashing the 4/x version but I guess it was flashing 5/x. I just downloaded and manually flashed the 4/x kernel linked about and now it's working again.
What will I need to do when this CM7 build is final?
I believe, you can use the 1.2 bootloader file for stable, nightly or beta. But for beta which uses the new .32 Kernel, the newer 1.2 bootloader is needed. The new kernel was written from the .32 source and needs the new bootloader to play nice. Only OC test kernels run with the beta test builds.
It has been implied that after the beta is thoroughly tested by us guinea pigs, the devs will incorporate the new kernel and its really cool improvements into the normal builds.
The beta with the new kernel is smoother and faster, WiFi drivers are better and it reaches deep sleep, so battery life is better. But it's still a test beta so it's not perfect yet, for some.
All above is my interpretation, correct me as/if needed..

It is possible to read and get incomplete information from the threads. I read that line about the kernel not being for use with the stable mod but it also says you're OK if your NC boots with "Read Forever". Well mine boots this way so I thought I was good to use the 2.6.32 kernel.
So instead of trying to belittle people, how about being a little more helpful? Not all of us are IT people.
yeah things actually got more complicated recently, in addition some of the older test kernels needed script edits too..

No problem dude. Believe me I get where you're coming from. I'm a big home theater guy and hang out at Audioholics. I admit I get bugged when noobs come in asking the same questions about what speakers should I get? Is this amp any good? blah, blah, blah. I just tend to ignore those guys though.
I know I an nowhere near qualified to be rooting my Nook. That's why I paid a local guy to do it for me for $25. I think it was a bargain as I now have a kick-ass tablet PC for $275. Many thanks to CM and XDA!!!
But I just had one issue, the sleep thing and installing the new kernel seemed like an easy proposition. Turned out that it was quite as simple as I thought. I have since gotten the 5-15-11 kernel installed but my battery still seems to be wearing down at the same speed. Not sure if the sleep fix isn't part of this kernel.

[Q] Froyo by Laszlo Questions (More at bottom)

Hello there, I recently flashed CM6 to my G1 and used Zeam for a faster launcher, but friends are telling me that when they used CM6, their phone got slower and slower as time went on, and that I should seek alternatives.
I hear one of the best Android 2.2 roms out there is Froyo by Laszlo, and from reading it seems the only major difference is that it can use the more recent radio/spl/kernel which adds 15MB, and that it's generally lighter than CM6 as well.
Can anyone give me a rundown on what some of the other major differences are? I also hear other good ones are ezterry's AOSP and Froyo for Trout.
As for upgrading the Radio and SPL needed for Froyo by Laszlo:
Considering I have DangerSPL (HBOOT-1.33.2005), RA's Recovery, and Radio 2.22.23.02, is there anything extra I need to worry about other than what's outlined in this thread?
Thanks in advance.

I have not tried froyo by laszlo, but i have tried cm6 , so i cant tell what the difference is, but another major difference is that froyo by laszlo has apps2sdext, which allows you to install apps in a ext3 or ext 4 partition on your sd card, while cm6 does not.
I noticed that, does it set up the partitions for you, or will I have to do this myself? What would a good size for them be?

Okay, thanks for that, I'm going to try it now.
EDIT: Last question, does the updated kernel for 2708 come pre-installed with Froyo by Laszlo or does that have to be done separately as well?
EDIT2: D'oh, nevermind, I saw it in the features list. Right now it's booting, hope it works!
EDIT3: Wow, they weren't lying, Laszlo did a great job, it's lightning fast! I'm not partial to the theme choice, but I know this can be changed easily.
Thanks for your help.
I do have a few more questions though;
1. How do I revert to the Android 2.2 Google Market? The new one feels a bit too cluttered to me, and flashing CM6 Google Apps did not change this
Thanks in advance.

I do have a few more questions though;

Thanks for the suggestion, but I simply ended up replacing the lock screen with Froyo's, as well as tweaking the status bar (making it a gradient rather than solid black, for example)
ok my personal opinion... froyobylaszlo the BEST froyo rom hands down... only issue i find is that the developer stopped updating soo you can take it upon yourself to make changes if you dont like it.. but still to this day i thinks its the best.. sorry to offend anyone by saying that but its only my personal opinion... lazslo rom is just so smooth and stable..
my sd was 128mb swap and 1024mb ext4 and i used this kernel... http://www.4shared.com/file/1j_4eg7x/ezBiffTestKernel20110222-2708_.html
honestly you will love this rom but i recomend upgrading your radio and hboot... can follow this guide or the one you posted earlier by habbitat22, they are kinda the same..
