Installing APK's From other firmwares - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Have a newbie question for you all..
Is there any reason why i couldnt take apks from one firmware and apply it to another.
For example superuser.apk from one hero and add it to another hero firmware which hasnt got it...i would be using Linda File Manager

I did this with the biz card scanner from a hero rom and put it in CM4.0.4
Download the rom that has the apk file.
Open the rom as a zip file.
Find the apk file and copy it to your sdcard.
Download Appsinstaller from the market and use it to install the apk on your sdcard.
This will NOT work with all apk files and make sure you have a backup before you try it.

"SuperUser whitelist" is available on the market for free, so you might as well get it from there.
If it wasn't on the market you could use Fingerlickin's method. Some apk's need to be pushed using the terminal and many apks on Hero are directly tied in to the HTC Framework so can't just be pushed to cupcake builds.

STK Menu Application for HTC Magic Vodafone

Hi there,
I have the Vodafone edition of the HTC Magic/Sapphire. Vodafone has a SIM menu which is useful for being able to quickly check your account balance and topping up your phone - but my HTC Magic doesn't have the STK Application on it so I can't use it!
Does anyone have the .apk for the STK application? I can't seem to find it anywhere on the internet...
even if i upload it here, you wont be able to use it.
vodafone is blocking it. i flashed to a hero rum just because of that.
Why would they want to block it? They made the menu on my sim. And how would they block it?? If you have it, please upload it. Its painful without.
STK
here you go
Awesome thanks. This may be a rather n00b q but what do I do with the odex file? Do I have to have root access and copy it to a system location?
copythe extracted files to the sd card and press on the ine with icon.
it will try to install itself.
Haha oops, I only extracted the odex file originally...
Unfortunately you were correct... when I tried to install it, it said, cannot be installed on this phone... how can I circumvent this?
install another rom - as i did
was hoping you wouldn't say that... rooting the phone won't help?
nope. i had exactly the same thoughts.
the good thing is: i have qteks hero rom and its really nicer. android itself is nice. but this rom is even nicer. a bit slower. but nice
if u cant install the apk try to push the apk and the odex file into the apps directory

Ooooh. And by push do you mean using the sdk or just by copying using a file manager?

push using adb from the sdk
So, that would be:
adb push Stk.apk /system/app/Stk.apk
adb push Stk.odex /system/app/Stk.odex

NoMoRootfs Build with Astro + Calendar (like the one in Jamezelle's Sense Hero)

I have tried out Jamezelle's SenseHero and Plemen's Donut. I like SenseHero because the calendar does not need to be associated with a Google account, but it does not have Astro or another file manager. Plemen's Donut has Astro but the calendar requires association with Google account. I would like to find a norootfs build with a calendar like SenseHero and with Astro or another file manager, so I can install apks as I do not have data. Sorry to Jamezelle and Plemen if I sounded critical of their builds as I like them both.
Thanks in advance.
You can install apks through adb without a file manager.
I know that I can install apks through adb, but I can't seem to get my computer to properly mount my Vogue. Also, is there possibly a way to install apks through terminal on the phone?

I think there may be a way if you copy them to /data/app, I'm sure someone else can chime in with the full answer.
So if I copy the apks to /data/apps/ would it install by itself?
If it does, would it install itself from a data/apps/ file path on the sdcard?

you really need to get adb working thats all i can say there is a really good tutorial in the dream forum
Well, everytime I try to install the drivers, it comes up with error 37, and microsoft says just keep on trying again and again until it works which is probably unlikely since I've tried it about 10 times already.
btw Jamezelle cokeman 0.41 caused all the trouble and cokeman 2.31 fixed the problem and how much longer will it be until you can make your SenseHero build norootfs?
androidinstall.tar is just a single packaged file of everything that gets installed
All done on your PC:
1) unpackage/unzip it on your computer w/ 7zip or your compression favorite app
2) navigate to "system\app"
3) drag whatever apk's you want to have installed in there
4) using 7zip, make a tar file and name it androidinstall.tar
The above process can also be used with the androidupdate.tar file
androidinstall.tar and androidupdate.tar must have the same directory structure and file locations as the Android build you are trying to update/install or bad things may happen.
Is it possible to use jamezelle's sensehero build, and then make an androidupdate file with astro in it to get astro and the calendar (without using adb)

I don't know about vilord's, but myn's Donut does (although, you can always export it and then import it via some app from marketplace.)
I finally got adb to work!
Thanks for everyone's help!

com.androidmegastore.livewallpaper.gogreen.zip

I installed this from the market on my legend rom. I have created a nandroid backup of that rom and I'm now rockin the nonsense rom from team-slide (great rom by the way!). However I'm trying to find this on the market now and it seems like it is nowhere to be found. I've tried a variation of searches with no luck. So I thought, well I'll just restore my legend rom backup and adb pull the file from there. It was located in the /data/app as a .zip file while the other apps were .apk. Anyhow I was able to pull the file and its now on my computer. I then did a restore to my nonsesnse rom but I'm unsure how to get the zip file back on the phone. I can adb push it on there but it doesn't 'install' it per sey. Any ideas on how to get this app back on the nonsense rom?
You can place the apk on the sd card and then on the phone you can use astro to install it. If that doesn't work you can connect to the pc and use the "adb install" command.

Part of the problem is that I don't see an apk file. The file is actually .zip in the /data/app path. The other files in the /data/app path are .apk files. Am I missing something here or is the apk file in another path? When I unzip the file on my computer there are multiple folders. If I had the actual apk then I might be in business. Any suggenstions on where it might be hiding?
go to app private in the backup that u got the zip from there should b the apk
update - app private had the apk, installed and working fine, thanks for all the help. So is it safe to say if it is a zip file the apk will always appear in app private? Why make this different from the other apks? Is it just developer specific i guess?

Problem installing CM7 google Apps Update.zip

Hi guys , I installed CM7 Rom (from 2.1 JFD) through Rom Manager, it works good, i put update.zip on card, but ddnt put google apps .zip file.
CM7 installed correctly. when i tried to put googleAppsUpdate.zip on card (and removed th CM7Update.zip ) and restarted in recovery from rom manager , i got An Exclamation White triangle Above and Android Man Symbol. and no progress !!!
wht is wrong ?? and how can i Install google Apps update ??
I'm kind of confused here bud, but update.zip is clockwork mod not cm7. By putting the update.zip and applying it via recovery, that would have installed clockwork recovery, and from there you would have needed to install the cm7 zip via recovery to flash cm7. The Google apps zip can be downloaded through your ron manager or via cm7 server, then it needs to he flashed the same way via clockwork recovery (install zip from sdcard).

Here comes the fire!!! :-D simple beginner mistake lol
Galaxy S Vibrant CM7.1
google apps....are apps!
you can extract all the apps from the zip, and push them to system/app.
if you cant do that, try mounting system in recovery before you flash....if this was the hd2 forum, you will be hot Cheetos right now...flamed! lol

when i decompress the .zip i found 2 folders:
-META-INF
-system
each of , contains another files and folders , can you tell exactly where to put in details ?
thx
This belongs in the Q&A, NOT in the Vibrant Android Development

First fo all, this is in the wrong forum.
Second of all, I really believe you are probably trying to flash a version of gapps that is not correct for your device.
But either way...
The two compressed folders are
-META-INF
-system
decompress the system folder..maybe put it on your desktop or something. Inside the system folder is a series of different folders. Look for the one that is named "Apps" take that folder and place it on the root of your SDcard. Now, go back onto your phone and use Root explorer to manually move each of the apks from that app folder that you would like...and move them to system>apps. fix the permissions on the apk once you move it so that it has the same permissions as every other apk already in the folder and once you are done moving whichever apps you'd like on your phone and fixing the permissions, reboot your phone.
