Can MicroSD card slot go bad? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My G1 is rooted with an 8GB Class 4 card. I've been running Drizzy's latest ROM for a couple weeks now with no issues. On Thursday all of the Apps on my SD card started crashing. I shut the phone off, pulled the card, re-installed the card and then rebooted. I get to the animated screen and then the phone just loops. I did Home+Power to get into recovery so I could go into parted but it says there is no SD card. I take the card back out and plug it into my Macbook and it pops up fine. I reformat to FAT32 again anyway and plug it back into the phone.
Home+Power (CyanogenMod v1.4)
Alt+X (Console)
I type in "parted /dev/block/mmcblk0" (without quotes) and I get
"Error: Could not stat device /dev/block/mmcblk0 - No such file or directory."
I have tried wiping and reformatting multiple times now. I have also tried the original 2 GB card that came with the G1 with no luck. So I went out and bought a new 4 GB class 6. I get the same errors with all of the cards.
What is frustrating me is that I can get into Recovery and Bootloader just fine so I know I'm not bricked. I just can't flash anything because the phones not reading any of my cards. What's more, I can put my cards in my wifes G1 and it reads them just fine.
I have even tried going back to stock using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491350. I have tried it with all 3 cards with the same results. Recovery can't see the Update.zip and Bootloader can't see the DREAIMG.nbh.
Is it possible that I have had a hardware failure? Can a card slot just die like that?
Any ideas for other things that I can try? I have been searching and reading everything that I can find on XDA about formatting SD cards and I can't get anything to work. I've been without a phone for 3 days now and am starting to get frustrated. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hardware failure sounds like the most likely problem. Normally the best thing to do when you have a problem with the phone is take it back to a tmo store and they should replace it for you. The problem is, you have the 1.33.2005 SPL, and I don't know how you can flash that back to stock ready for it to be shipped back to HTC. Hopefully there is a method of flashing RC29 usinf fastboot, otherwise you'll have to hold your breath when you send it off for repair.

Alright, well I got my phone to boot thanks to this post by aoi0123:
As I said I did it.
FYI, I write this msg for somebody has same problem.
I did "flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.2.img".
After the reboot, it stucked on the second boot screen, it looped forever and ever and never stopped.
So I Alt+w and then Alt+s but it said can't find update.zip
But it was there.
And I tried some of the builds on this fourm.
I got some other messages, but I don't remember, sorry.
Anyway I coudn't fix it with the way.
I also tried to use another SD card.but it also didn't work.
unfortunatry, I didn't have nandroid backup, cos I didn't care much about the backup.
Then I got signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-img-148830.zip from http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html
and I did like this.
C:\bin>fastboot update signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-img-148830.zip
archive does not contain 'boot.sig'
archive does not contain 'recovery.sig'
archive does not contain 'system.sig'

Then I got this error...
Then I unzipped the file, and I did like this.
C:\bin>fastboot flash boot boot.img

Then I got G1 back!
I hope it can help somebody.
Cheers!
So the good news is that I can use my phone. The bad news is that the phone still doesn't recognize any of my Micro SDHC cards. I even took them to work and reformatted them to FAT32 again. When I got to 'Settings/SD card' everything is greyed out. I am one step closer to being able to take it into T-Mobile and having them test the SD slot. So I have a working ROM but it says it's a Dev phone and I still can't get it unrooted and back to stock. This is what it says:
Model Number
Android Dev Phone 1
Firmware version
1.1
Baseband version

Can you install updates through ADB? I've tride the push command but it doesn't work. Any ideas?

The same thing happened to me today. Were you able to get it working again?

This may help. IDK.
Ok,so the same exact thing was happening to me last week. I would put in my 16GB micro SD and my 8GB and it would not read. So....I got on my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I downloaded Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 Special Edition from the Internet(I found it free,he he!) Anyways...I deleted all my partitions off the micro SD.I had FAT32,EXT3,and Linux-Swap. I deleted them all, then through windows format I did a FULL FORMAT not just a quick format. After the full format I created new EXT3 and Linux-Swap partitions on my micro SD then reinstalled it into my G1 and bingo! My phone was reading my microSD again.Give this a try man and see how it works out for you! Sorry if this doesn't help you I'm just trying to lend a helping hand.Good Luck!

i have the same probleme, i tried to format the micro sd card and create 3 partition (fat 32,Ext2 converted to ext3 and linux-swap) with paragon 9.0 but i still have the probleme , Htc dream don't recognize the sd card
without the sd card i can't do anything, no recovery, no camero and no music !
please help

This is due to bad partitioning if your phone detects a fully formatted FAT32 card

can you help me to make the 3 partitions please ? i'm using paragon 9.0 and 2Go sd card
i tried 3 different sd cards and the phone don't detect any one
Edit : When i plug my partitionned sd card in the phone and reboot it,i find a file (i explore the sd card with my laptop) : qxdm_20091124_225925_1.dm

can anyone help ?

try installing Amon_RA's recovery and use it to partition

hi... anybody solve this problem?... i have the same problem here.

SD Card cannot be read and G1 firmware does not boot up (almost bricked)

Hi guys,
First off I want to say this site is great in what it is doing for the mobile phone world! This is my first post and I am a noob so be gentle haha! Well ok, i've messed up my g1 phone and its almost bricked. I think I have identified two problems:
Problem 1:
I was trying to partition my sd card using a method from a site called theunlockr.com. Where they used the apps2sd software:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_7n1g8jXgY
After performing the procedure, my 2 gig sd card cannot be read on my computer (comes up with "insert disc") and cannot be read on my phone as well. My SD card is completely wiped and I tried formatting it again but it still cannot be read.
Problem 2:
I tried to reboot my phone and now it gets to g1 tmobile screen but no further. To turn the phone off I have to take out the battery.
I can get into the recovery utility using the pwr and home buttons so I do not believe it is bricked, but as my computer cannot read the sd card, I am not able to copy any roms to make any progress.
My question is whether if after buying a new sd card and formatting it, can I simply reflash of my ROM by doing "alt & S" to make it work? The reason why I ask is whether I should simply send it back to TMob and play dumb to get a new phone or buy a new sd card and usb reader.
I am looking at it too simply and there is more to it? E.g have I messed around too much and damaged the file system links etc on my phone. Will a reflash of the cynogen rom using the recovery utility completely reset my phone and get me passed the boot screen loader to the operating system?
I had the following set up on my phone:
Firmware: Cyanogen 4.02
Recovery Image: 1
Recovery Utility build: JF v1.43
Thanks for your input!
Mepow!
Reflashing your phone if you messed up partion it will not work, if you pop out your sdcard and then try to boot it prob will, try a card reader and format and repartion or you can try recovery console and type ums_enable to try to mount your sd card while connect usb to your computer and try to format it that when and when you are done type ums_disable and then type reboot to reboot the phone
thanks tried that in the recovery console but it came up with
"ubs_enable not found". My computer unfortunately does not recognise the sd card.
You gotta type ums_enable not ubs as you said in the last post

broken SD card??? PLEASEEEE HELP!!!!!!

hey everyone, im not usually quick to ask for help but i am absolutely frustrated and stuck.
trust me ive searched and read everything i need to and its just not working for me
i have a 8gb micro sd class 6 card.... everything was fine and working perfect until i did a nandroid backup
then my card started having errors when repairing ext filesystems
so i put the card in my computer and formatted it.
then i deleted and repartitioned the card
then i did the command in the recovery console to fix the filesystem error
reflashed the radio image
none of that is working for me
i have another 4gb class 4 card and its working perfect for me
but ever since my 8gb did a nandroid backup, the roms wont load at all and i get stuck in a boot loop with the second htc splash screen
PLEASE HELP THIS IS DRIVING ME MAD!!!! thanks a bunch in advance!!
im using jacxhero v2.1
and i use cyan 1.4 recovery img
After you partition in Recovery, you don't need to fix filesystems... just exit Parted and type upgrade_fs in recovery console to upgrade to ext3.

this is a fault with the rom, the nandroid backup shouldnt cause a bootloop.
did you make sure the partitions are in this order?: FAT32, ext, linux swap?
can you see the card on your pc?
yes i did those 3 in order, ive done it several different times
i make sure that i do the upgrade_fs to convert to ext3
everything goes well when i partition and i can see the sd card in my computer. but for some reason i cant get past the splash screen with this memory card... my other one is working perfect, and so was this one until i did the backup thing
when i flash, it finishes and i reboot and get stuck after the HERO splash screen, the first time it shows the little android guy and then the screen goes black and i see the same spash screen again but with no android
what happens if i repair filesystems after i repartitioned??

it wont hurt to repair it, but it seems that the problem is more likely the hero rom. something is causing the rom to bootloop. did you wipe before you flashed? try that if you havent.
also, set up adb using the stickys in this thread, then use
Code:
adb logcat
when it starts to boot. that way i can see whats happening thats causing it to bootloop
yes i definately wipe before flashing. i still think its the sd card since my other sd card works with the same rom
ill try out the abd thing... ive seen posts about it but never really read into it.
thanks for the advice! ill be right back with the results
right now that i tried again, i cant get passed the tmobile g1 screen... seems to be stuck =[
the card was formatted and partitioned and then i booted (the rom is already flashed on here, i just took out my 4gb card and switched it out for this one so i shouldnt need to reflash should i?
now i deleted all partitions in recovery mode and rebooted....
i got both splash screens hero with android and then the htc splash... now it went to a black screen and has been like this for about 5 or 6 minutes
with my 4gb card it shows the two splash screens and then the black screen comes on for no more than 30 seconds and then the phone loads

well the hero builds put some apps and configuration files on the ext partition. if your 4gb card has those on it, then you probably wont have to.
Can you see the partitions on your computer?
no i dont know how to see partitions on my computer

if your using windows, format the whole card to FAT32 and put it in your card reader to see if it shows up as a removable drive.
what are you using to partition the card? Try flashing another rom that doesnt need extra partitions (such as cyanogen) and see if that rom can see your card as well.
if it doesnt detect it, then your card may have gone bad
=[ looks like i got a bad card....
i appreciate you two helping me out! wish it could have worked... i guess im just gonna pick up a new card
this rom wont even load when i dont have an SD card in it... and when the phone is loaded with my 4gb card, if i take it out, the phone freezes
weird....

like i said, important system files are on the sd card. you cant remove the sd card without crashing it. if you want a rom that you can use without an sd card, use JF or Cyanogen's rom. The hero roms have too much stuff to fit it all in the internal memory of the phone
what are those important files on the sd card?
are you talking about the partitions or something else?
if its something else like hidden files or something, then maybe thats what i need to fix my 8gb

they arent hidden, but thats what i was trying to say. after youve formatted your card, wipe and reflash the update. it will put those files on your card automatically.
they are located on your ext partition.
if you use adb, you can see them in
/system/sd/app_s
to get it to work, put the freshly partitioned sdcard into the phone.
press home+power to get to recovery. wipe the phone. flash the update (jachero2.1)
when it installs, it will find the ext partition and do it manually

[SOLVED; broken SD] ADP1 will not boot with any ext partition present on SD

Hi all,
A couple of days ago i decided to give my phone a completely fresh start, looking back i wish i never did. Here's my problem:
As soon as i create any ext partition on my SD card the phone will not boot past the splash screen. When i remove the partition all is well but i really love APPS2SD so this is not an option for me.
Here's some more info on my setup;
ADP1 (PVT 32B ENG S-OFF)
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA10000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
Running the latest cyanogen's recovery
Here's what i already tried (i know its a long read but please hang in there);
I formatted the SD card using a HTC Magic (as stated on cyanogens wiki that formatting on android 1.6 is preferred). Put signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip and update-cm-4.2.13-signed.zip on the SD and followed instruction to flash both in correct sequence. This works flawlessly, booting up with no issues at all. I then turned the phone off and put the microSD in my PC.
I then proceeded to shrink the FAT32 partition (Ubuntu GParted) to make room for the ext partition but not created this partition just yet for testing purposes. Put the SD card back in the phone and i boots up like a dream (no pun intended) running smooth as ever so the shrunk partition is still working great! Once again turned the phone off and put the SD back in my PC to create the ext partition and that's where the problems begin; as soon as ANY ext partition is present (i tried ext2, ext3 and ext4) the phone will not get past the splash screen!!
As soon as i remove this ext partition all works great once again! So then i figured i'd probably have to flash everything from scratch with the ext partition present but this gives me the same results every single time with ext2/3/4 partition present. I even gave Amon-RA's recovery a try with this same process, and even tried to create the partitions using that. No luck, same results every single time.
Now in the past i always used APPS2SD with a ext2 partition without any problems but now i am unable to just get it back to work!
I have a feeling that something goes all messed up somewhere in creating the ext partition but i just cant put my finger on it where, i've ben on this for 3 days now so any input would be very much appreciated!

Your sd could be going bad.
Which version of Amon_Ra are you using?Try repartitioning your sdcard and try another rom like Super-D thats much faster and see where that gets you.

Thank you for the very fast reply!
I'ver tried repartitioning multiple times with different partition sizes and i used the latest of Amon_RA's work (dream v1.5.2).
I will give Super-D a try just for kicks..
And before i forget, i also tried flashing with the defanged DRC83 base and older versions of cyanogens just to make sure without any luck. I also always double-check the MD5sums on all the files that get on my phone!

Well my friend, your first hunch appears to be correct! I've done some small experiments with the card - copying large files back/forth and checking integrity - and it appears that the card is indeed messed up! That's just one of those things i never seem to come up with myself!
I just came back from the store to buy a new cheap card, and even tho its only a class 2 everything formatted and installed without any problems including the APPS2SD! So i guess ill have to order myself a new card, bummer those things only last a year and a half as it appears, i guess ill just have to keep the receipt and get myself a new one under warranty every now and then......
Thanks a million for pointing me in the right direction!

did you use 1.6 or did you format from Amon? Also, is i possible not to load "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip". And just go download everything again from the market? Someone said I don't need that file? Where they trying to brick me?

I just formatted the card in a cardreader using Gparted, a FAT32 partition for the whole size of the card minus space for the EXT and swap partition (in my case 512+32Mb resp.). Don't know if it is mandatory but i also flagged the FAT32 boot and lba and it works brilliant for me!
I indeed used the devphone OTA update, but only do this is you have a ADP1... I guess you could probably mess up a normal G1 with that rom. Just follow instructions! Pick the correct 1.6 base rom for your phone (either defanged or the devphone version), flash it and without a reboot flash the latest cyanogens rom over the base, its all explained quite idiot-proof on cyanogens wiki.

Why won't my SD card partition?

Tried everything I could imagine. ROM Manager...Amon Ra's, Windows and used a Partition software. It always hangs (because it never get's past a certain point). Amon Ra just keeps going and going and going and never stops (left it for over 8 hours one time). ROM Manager says that it did it...but it didn't. Windows software also just keeps going and going and going.
I'm out of ideas. Why won't my SD card partition? It's a 16GB ADATA class 6 card. When I interrupt the partition process...I can see that it has partially partitioned the card...but not to the full capacity I requested.
It's weird because when I first got the card...I was able to partition without problems...only took a couple minutes or so with Amon Ra recovery. Now, nothing... I'm clueless...
Can anybody help me out?

did you format your sd after you interrupted the partition? maybe that will help?
I suggest you to copy all files to PC and then delete the current partition with a partition manager (do not resize it). Then, create the partitions you need again. It may be better to create them with ROM Manager.
And if that fails, you may do a surface test of your card, since it may have bad clusters. In this case I would not use that card.

Yeah...format was required by the phone.

Okay...so I'm going to delete the partition...then go straight into ROM Manager and see if that works.

[Q] Blank SD card or has Unsupported File System Error

The AMOLED screen on my Nexus One broke, so, I sent it for repair to a dealer cause there is no official HTC support for Nexus One in India. Before I sent the phone I took a backup of my SD card and also removed it from the phone.
After I got the phone back with the new screen installed, I put in my SD card and it says Blank SD card or unsupported file system. So, I tried different SD card and the same thing popped up with every card I put in. It would ask me to format the card and even if I formatted, it would not mount the SD card. The SD cards work in all other phones and SD card readers.
So, I sent the phone back to the repair guy and he said that its most probably a software bug because if it was a hardware bug then the error message would not pop up at all. He said that it would be best to reflash the ROM but then he tried and the ROM could not be reflashed.
Now the Phone is with me and everything works except for the SD card. Plugging the phone in the computer also doesn't help as the card is not being mounted by the phone at all.
The phone I am using is a Nexus One with stock ROM Android 2.3.4 (never rooted or hacked).
Please help me find a solution to this. I'm even ready to install a custom ROM but can't do so without an SD card.
Please help!!!
Ok well android can't find the SD card but lets see if your bootloader can if not then send it in for repairs again because it's not software. Check my sig there is a link that says passimg try those instructions and tell me what you get.
Hey,
Thank you for the response but most of the instructions require the SD Card. However, in my case as you know the SD Card itself is not functioning. So even if I download the Passimg file, I can't place it on the SD card.
Is there a way to use ADB to wipe the phone completely and then reinstall the original factory stock ROMS?
I did go back to the vendor and asked him to repair the device but after a heated argument he just said that the device's SD card is working but it is not recognizing the cards in it which he said is because of a software bug and for that you need to re-flash the device completely but he didn't have the means to do it, so now I'm left with an unusable phone.
So, in shot can I do the whole reflash thing without the SD card working?
Thank you for responding, you're the only one so far whose come to the rescue. Waiting to hear from you.
Thanks
Hey,
So I just understood the full extent of your recommendation. You wanted me to check if the bootloader detects the Passimg file or not given that booting into Android is not doing that.
As per the instructions on the passimg page I need to download the FRG83 ROM and apply the update. But I'm just wondering if I do this and if the bootloader actually detects the update on the SD card, won't I also need to downgrade the HBOOT version or is it jut safe to apply the downgraded FRG83 over the GRJ22 build that I currently have on the phone?
The details of my phone are as follows:
Nexusone pvt Ship S-ON
HBOOT-0.35.0017
MICROP-0b15
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0103
RADIO-5.08.00.04

Please guide as per your convenience,
Thank you.
I'm not 100% sure but I'd assume that if you do as what you're planning to do.. the HBOOT should also be flashed automatically with the rom. double check incase!
Hi Again,
So, I took the risk and downloaded the FRG83 ROm loaded it into my SD card using a different phone and then put that card into the SD card slot of the Nexus One.
I went into the boot loaded and it automatically detected the PASSIMG.zip file and asked me whether I want to install the Update - I chose YES.
The update installed successfully and I booted into Android. After finishing the Wizard, I checked the Android Version and it says FRG83 but when I look at the notification bar it still shows me the same error "Blank SD card or has Unsupported File System".
So, we can conclude that the SD card and the SD slot work fine.. Any thoughts on what could be done next?
Well that's weird ok well lets see what the computer says. Put the card back in that other phone and connect it to the computer then on the computer go to computer then right click the card (probably E: maybe F: ) then go to properties and check file system make sure it's FAT32.
Not sure if it's wort posting on this thread still, but lots of people come searching for a solution to this problem so I figured I'd post at least another thing to try.
I've had this happen several time on various Android phones. I've been able to bring the card back every time. I throw the card into my micro usb reader, pop it in my computer, and run disk utility (I don't know what equivalent would be for Windows). You should see your SD card come up and see your main data partition there below it. Click on the partition and click repair in the bottom right.
It will run through some stuff and you'll be able to see if it's found anything in need of repair and if it repaired it.
The few times this has happened to me Disk Utility said it was an empty block at beginning of some data or something...
YMMV

When I had this exact problem, I had to replace the SIM/Micro SD flex board to fix it. They were $15 shipped on eBay at the time.
