Transfering ROM to sd card from console? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was having problems with a boot loop after upgrading to JACxHERO this evening, so after trying to wipe and reflash and still encountering errors, I opted to try redoing my partitions on the ol' sd card.
This hit me with a hiccup. I dont actually have an SD card reader that can read SDHC cards, as I have been mounting the the phone to my laptop via USB to trasfer stuff. Given that the phone is in non-bootable condition, I am kind of stuck.
Is there any way I can somehow ftp or ssh into the phone to put files onto it? or somehow mount the SD via USB somehow in the console?
What advice can you give, I made a booboo, and I am scared at the prospect of being phoneless until tomorrow (labor day) trying to find somewhere that is open to get an SD card reader.

Oh for ****'s sake... why the multiple threads?! Check the SD CARD thread in this forum to get yourself up and running. Once properly partitioned, you can mount the sd card in Recovery and transfer over the ROM you want to flash to and proceed.

Uansari, calm down, this is normal in q&a, op go into your recovery console and type ums_enable to mount your card to your card via usb, type ums_disable to unmount it and then type recovery to go back to the recovery

Yes, but it's not normal to post the same thread in multiple forums... this exact thread is in the development forum as well.
Anyway, I suggested strless's SDCARD thread... hopefully he's looking through it now.

Oh, I didn't know that it is also in dev forum also, I was not over, I am sorry, thought that you were annoyed that there is like 10 threads in the first two pages asking the same question

No, that's just in line with the typical lack of consideration by noobs. Everyone thinks they're special and don't search, because no one else can ever have had the same problem or question they have.
I guess that is annoying me, lol...
Regardless, if people post in General or Q&A, I'll still help them even if they're being idiots. If they post threads in Development, then I'll be an asshole and call them out for being morons.

Yeah I agree with you there, I avoid the dev forum for the most part unless I am checking up on roms or android updates. There are plenty of people already there that will get the point across much but than me like mikey the mod, he does it very well

[Help Please] Micro SD Card

Hi
I have 2 gb micro sd card and I want to format it using Resco file explorer. But it keeps telling me to check to see if its unlocked.
I use to be able to format without a problem. But i have recently started to flash roms. I can put stop and take stuff without a problem. Just won't let me format.
I also tried formatting using my laptop, but won't work.
EDIT: Sorry, wrong place. Wanted to post this in general Kaiser forum.
Is the little write protect tab on the side of the sd card in the right position??
i moved it off the lock position and nothing? my comp won't even let me right click it. when I click to open it, says needs to be formatted and when i click format PC says it can't be formatted.
I searched on here, but no thread about this type of problem. card isn't ruined because i can still add and delete stuff.
I never experience this issue .. quite confusing.
However, this should be posted in General forum, not ROM Development. Mod, please move as such ..

Could be a problem with the card / slot connectors. Try with some other card reader.
I had an issue once where I couldn't format my card - I had no lock errors though, just couldn't format through the PC or with PPC programs.
Eventually I installed 'Flash Format' by CNetX (google it) - it formatted first time on the free evaluation version.
Worth a try if you're about to bin it!
Good luck.

You sir are a genius and a life-saver!
This product is a magical potion for the microSD card. I tried so many different things online, on the laptop, and the Kaiser and none worked. This thing took less than a minute and formatted with the click of one button.
Mods, please move this thread. Hopefully it can help others who might have this problem in the future.
Thank you very much sir!
Glad it worked - it's very strange that this little program seems to be able to sort the issues that even the premium programs can't....

pls tell me this isnt a brick

ok so I was running drizzy's 2.7 and i needed to repartition so i could install the jac drizzy collaborative hero
after repartitioning i tried starting up so i could connect to my pc and put the update on my sd card. it goes to the g1 screen and then goes to a completely black screen and stays there... no hero or android logo....i can still do recovery i think
ha sorry i miss read your question. can you even go to recovery?
def not a brick... brick = not able to access bootloader or recovery screen. If you can access those, just transfer file over via adb and just re-flash and you should be good.
i dont know what adb is so im just gotta put a ROM on the sd card via a reader and flash it???

ADB is your best friend. It will let you do things when you can't do anything on your phone (like in your case).
If you are going to mess with Hero roms (or any experimental roms for that matter) you really need to learn at least the basics of it. Read up on it and start using it. It's a lot better then trying to put in 10 lines of code on phone's keyboard.
Good luck
i used an sd card reader to put the file on my sd card and now its flashing....i cant find a thread through search about adb...got any good links???

Go into Dream Android Development forum, second sticky from the top. It has all the info you will ever need, including basic ADB comands. At this point that's all you need, you will learn more as you move along and do things over and over again.
Edit: Silly me, look at the first thread on this forum
Good luck.

Formating the SD Card For Moding?!?!

Hmmm, okay....so i am trying to Mod my phone, and have read all the ways to do so. I appear to be stuck at the first step though. Formating the SD card.
I connect the phone to the computer and go to the removable disk and try to format, and i always get the error...."Please Insert Disk" and then it automatically disconnects the phone!
Is there something i am doing wrong?
My phone has been updating to crc1 or whatever, no rc29.
Any help?
READ THIS THREAD!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535232
not the first few pages but the entire thing.
in it you will see all the available ways of doing so. theres a bunch.
anyways. its covered. just get started.
your gonna wanna start with "downgrading" to RC-29 by putting dream.nch (or something similar, check the link)on your sd card. renamimng it update.zip and the rooting. it goes on from there.
ENJOY!!
Basically your computer hates your phone. I have had many problems with mounting the sdcard, which is why i got a card reader. Make sure you don't move the usb cable once it is plugged up to the phone, if it still doesn't work, do you have another device with a sdcard spot thet you can connect it to the computer with. Also its DREAIMG.nbh exactly that. If your card absolutely will not connect to your computer then follow the guide in my sig and download on your phone then move it to the root of your sdcard with astro or something.

Oh...meet one of the masters. He has a point. I'm the proud owner of 3 properly formatted sd cards. . Then I broke down and bought a card reader.
Trust me.....its better to slow down and read then ask a few questions and tate success. The enrire platform is exploding and the things our devs can do is wonderful, understanding the basics will prove to be greatly beneficial soon!!!
Wait till you see the theme threads!!!

what is that suppose to mean lol.
reading and asking questions is for losers lol, not really though it is best to read through the process a few times and make sure you have all the files downloaded before you start, also if you have a cheap little phone you can pop your sim card into in case something takes longer than you plan is a good option thats a plus.
don't do like i did where i had no clue what i was doing and spent like 2 and a half hours trying to root my phone.

did i loose root?

My sd card starting giving me errors about 2 weeks ago. It says the card is removed. I have tried about 6 cards now.
When I go into terminal and type mount /sdcard it says something like mount failed (are you root?). So did I loose root? I'm running jacxrom. This happen 2 weeks ago when I flashed.
i was running xrom when i had simular problems on one of my phones i had to unroot it and then send it back to tmobile. but ive been running it since and no problems since so who knows. but i dont think it was xrom i think it was a combination of adb and a bad cable.
Yeah. Any one know any terminal commands I can try? Also my phone keeps creating .dm files on the card. Its not my pc. This has happen on multiple cards and computers. I hope its not my sd card port. I don't have a contract with tmobile. My phones only 1 years old and its already kicking the bucket
would it be possible for you to go back to RC-29 and try a OTA firmware and see it still goes berzerk
i don't know if this would work (as long as you do not care for and information loss, otherwise back up your card first) go into the recovery console on cyanogen 1.3.1 and up and type
Code:
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
rm 1
rm 2 (if you have a second partition)
rm 3 (if you have a third partition)
print (look for Disk size /dev/block/mmcblk0: xxxxmb)
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 xxxx (substitute from above)
quit
reboot
see if that works. it will format your card to fat32. eh, its worth trying if you haven't already.
Says sh not found
when trying to do which part?
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
which recovery image do you have?
Try a card reader and see what happens, if not have to tried throwing it against a wall
Hey david, did you see that me and codani got called out to stop hijacking threads. This is no fun anymore
Jfs recovery. I have a card reader. The sd cards works perfectly on my pc.

oh man... if you haven't partitioned the card then use the card reader to partition it to fat32.
@the_reverend (your new name) when did this happen?
I have heard this happening a couple times, try reformating the sdcard to fat32 and try it again
also if you do get it working again, i highly (said from a tall tall tall building) that you get cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image.

This morning, check here in the q&a on the fastest rom not based on dream or hero, check out wich ever one that you see has mikey as the last post
Pistol gave me a heads up on it earlier, i alright let supreme and codani know, looks like we pushed it too far that other mods came in and mikey had to step it. Looks like the wrecking crew needs to hang back for a little bit till the heat does down
I've formatted to fat32 atleast 100 times. I've used 5 computers and 6 different sd cards.

have you tried unrooting and seeing if it does it with the stock rom? that would be the last thing i know to do.
i hang my head and mourn for the wrecking crew... let us all light up a newport for remembrance of better times *sniffles*
now we watch as the noobs come back out of the framework-res and start asking the pointless questions that a simple would've yielded them all the answers they needed. oh well, there was no mention of me hijacking any threads... sooooo..... hmmmm.... mwah-ha-ha-ha!!!

My G1 hung

Hello,
I have problem with my G1.
Sometimes when someone call me phone just start to vibrate and that's all You can't answer or close the phone.... You can't don nothing. And I need to remove the battery cause there is no other chance. And of course after the reboot there is nothing in the call log.
So is there someone who know what is going on or some chance to find a resolution of this because is very annoying.
Thank you in advance.
Regards
hi
well have you tried to wipe reset and/or flash another rom
Well I'm using Cyanogen 4.25 and I have made partitions but I don't know how to wipe partition with all the programs. I have 3 partitions - one swap, one for programs and my rest of the card.
But I haven't try any other roms. Well I was using before JF but this was before cyanogen so ....
What rom will you recommend me to try? Something stable I mean.
P.S Sorry for my stupid questions but I'm kind a lame with that phone.
Hi,
You might want to post this in the Q&A sub forum instead on in the DEV section.
You are more likely to get some help there.
thanks!
Either try difrent rom and see if the problem stops or u can unroot ur phone and call t-mobile
Well I can unroot my phone but I can't call T-mobile because I'm in Bulgaria and my phone is from UK .....
Will try to put other rom but will you recommend some?
!!!!!!
Gaaahhh!! It's a full-blown takeover!
This forum is for Android development! That's why it's called "Dream Android development!!!!"
Questions go in the Question&A forum!!!
MOD EDIT - Reduced size of text. No need for large text.....In my eyes this is just as bad as posting in wrong forum!!!
Here I go... reboot into recovery, wipe your data, wipe your ext partition, flash cyanogen's rom again. Cyanogen's is the most stable rom out there (possibly more stable than stock Android), so I'd recommend doing a wipe (including SD) and trying it again. But really, please ask in the right forum. It seems we get another question thread in this forum every ten minutes, and it really clutters it up and gets in the way of the real work going on here.
Wow!!! Sorry for the post here didn't know that will be so mad people ...
You can move my theme to Q&A sections if is nessesary.
But how can I wipe my SD card with lose any of the partitions? As I told you I'm noob (was able to make partitions by my own but now I don't know what to do)
Thanks for the answers and sorry again.

A mod will move this thread soon, but they are overwhelmed moving them all. It's becoming a hassle.
If you are using RA's recovery, there is an option in the menu to wipe your ext partition. I don't remember if the latest Cyanogen+JF recovery has that option or not. If you don't have it, then use gparted from a live cd, or use sdparted on your phone, to repartition. There are a lot of guides to this on these forums, if you search. (note that wiping ext will delete your apps, but repartitioning will erase all your files as well as your apps, so be sure to back up)
hi
boot your phone into recovery you know home and power ant the go to terminal and hit enter then enter this
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print
there is a portion that is like 500mb and you need to redo that partition it should be #2 so hit
rm 2mkpartfs primary ext2 3437 3937(depending on the size of your sd card)
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A forum. In future please abide by forum rules and post in correct forum. Little Tip, read title of forum and ask yourself is my question related to this.

too much work and it could cause errors
in recovery, go to console and
Code:
mke2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2

What this do?!
Just now I have wiped all the ext, cache and reflashed the cyanogen mod. Will tell you if this issue appears again.
It happened to me once
I was playing music and playing a game then some one called and the phone hung
I also had to clock it up to 528MHz instead of 384MHz so it can play music and run the game smoothly
I just thought maybe the old G1 couldn't handle the load
