How to disable in Android autoupdate firmware? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I want to disable autoupdate firmware on my G1. How can I do that?
Exploring phone's settings and searching in Google did not answer my question.
I use unlock G1. Firmware 1.5, build number crc1. Phone is not rooted.
I have expensive cellular data plan, so that future is very important for me.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Pardon my english.

Ok. When I'll get root access for my phone and update my phone with i.e. JF 1.5 what I'll should do after, to disable autoupdate totally? Is there some config files or is there some options in GUI? Maybe I'll have to use some applications?

custom roms will not receive over the air updates, so that the user will not lose root access

Thanks to everyone!
Probably thread should be closed by now.

Just want to clarify, but apparently some people got the OTA on a JF ROM that came through google. I don't think JF ever got around to fixing it. This was because he disabled carrier based update, but didn't realize that Googles updates went through. The latest Cyanogen ROM's based on 1.5r3 and above have OTA's completely disabled.

Can you skip sign into google

I am running 1.5 stock firmware and i currently have my phone plan off so i dont have access to internet therefore im running off wifi. Now i wanna update to 1.6 firmware but dont want to cause im scared i wont be able to use my phone after
if the image is based off of the adp phone then you can skip the activation.
if you use the official update whether you wait for OTA or update it manually it won't delete your user information, you won't have to sign in again, no worries

since you said you phone was off and didn't have a data connection only wifi i wanted to let you know that if you do upgrade to official 1.6 and decide you want to flash a custom rom in the future the one click method no longer works and you will have to downgrade to gain root wich will require signing in over your data connection

Newbie Questions about What I can do without ROOT

Restore Market Links?
Change any OS (Test Froyo?)
Thanks!!!
OK, i'll expand on this: Can I use the TMO Test Froyo method for installing a ROM? Any other non root way to restore market links?
Most of your answers can be found via the search function.
Tried and failed, anyone else?

You can flash test froyo without rooting
could you use that idea to flash anything w/o Root?

No, generally speaking, you can only flash OTA updates without root. No custom ROM's or radios or themes...

[Q] ROM s and build level

Have a new Captivate about 1 week old. Stock setup
Want to load the Samservmode app to toggle 2G/3G but when I research it I see the warning of "check if you are on rom s with the service mode installed" Can someone tell me how to find that info on the phone. Have checked the *#*#4536#*#*
Also, on some articles am seeing references to build level of the phone or ROM ...... can that information be found in the same location as the rom as above?
Are you on a custom ROM? which one?
you can dial #*#*197328640#*#* to enter service mode.

Basically you cannot do anything if your phone is not rooted. Try to learn more from the forum before you start flashing to a custom rom.

Not sure how this got misconstrued to me flashing a new ROM version??? All I am wanting is to figure out how to check what versions of ROM and and build levels I have as there are warnings in the instructions to load the Android App SamServMode to make it easy to turn off 3G without typing the big long string into the phone dialer. Seems like the warnings that it could cause a problem without the proper levels of ROM etc

[Q] AT&T Nexus 6 5.0 -> 5.1, will I lose root?

All,
I just got prompted by AT&T to install the 5.1 update and while I want it right now my phone is working near perfectly and I use a number of root needed applications. Before I do the upgrade I want to know if this will cause me to lose root and if so how easy it is to get it back? Right now I'd definitely pick root over 5.1
Searched but couldn't find an answer so sorry if I missed a thread on it already...

you have root, you wont be able to update via ota. any kind of system file changes prevents you upating via ota.

Ah, ok - so even if I'm being prompted you're saying that it will fail? I'm not running a custom ROM or anything just rooted. Just clarifying as it is prompting me to update.
So to update would I then need to go through the process manually? I'm sure there's a thread somewhere so I can find that, just making sure I understand...

Loads of threads. Search "update losing data" or something.
But in short, just fastboot flash system.img and boot.img and not userdata.img

Is there an easy way to unroot?

I'm using chroma ROM and my satellite provider requires it's app to run on an unrooted phone. I'd there an easy way to unroot my Nexus without having to wipe?

Flash the system image from a factory image. If your kernel is modified, flash the boot IMG as well.
Use wugs toolkit.

So just to get this straight and I don't screw up my phone. I find the stock rom same version as my chroma which is LMY48B. I extract it and using fastboot I install system.img and boot.img? My phone is unencrypted right now... Will it get encrypted?
And when I need root again I must just install it along with Franco Kernel I'm using?
I appreciate the help...

I installed it on my laptop but even though my phone is rooted I don't see an option to unroot... Maybe because I didn't use regular rom and used chroma instead?

First, why are you trying to unroot?
You would download a factory image form the Google developer page. Extract twice, and grab the system image from there. Yes, match the version your phone is currently on.

I'm trying to unroot because my satellite provider uses an app like sky go that requires your phone to be unrooted... I need to watch a game sometimes when I'm at work.

Have you considered multi ROM? You could have your rooted normal set up and a non rooted as well.
Can't you just go into supersu settings and unroot? That way you can stay on chroma

Depends on how deeply his situation is looking for root files. The unroot feature of SuperSU doesn't remove everything.

My friend I didn't know this was possible with the nexus 6. That would really interest me.... I already have twrp installed. Is there an easy guide you can point out for me?

How about the encryption? Chroma is unencrypted. If the second rom is encrypted what happens there?
I'm also trying to find a stock rom that is not pre-rooted to install from recovery. Can you show me the latest I can get?

My friend I installed multirom and used an older Chroma rom that wasn't pre-rooted. it worked like a charm.... Now I can just go to this rom and use all my apps that require the phone to be unrooted.... Again thanks for the idea....
Can I just ask what version of chroma wasn't pre rooted? I want to do the same if possible. Thanks

well, 2 months ago it was being called older.. anyways, the far majority of roms do not have root. you need to flash the supersu file shen flashing the roms, for root. but, to flash a rom, yoh need an unlocked bootloader and twrp recovery. most apps that check for root will still think that you have root though.

i must have fell asleep during this development lol
far as i have ever seen, its rare for a rom to not be rooted, however, more frequently devs have had it off by default, and its a treasure hunt to find where to turn it on.
i do always flash the su zip, to avoid this tedious hunting though.

yup I found that most are pre-rooted, though found cleancore that works great. I've just installed multirom and that booted into it then tested a couple of apps that are blocked on root (Banking app and Sky Go), and happy days they work great.
Its annoying and rather wasteful having have a second rom just to run a couple of apps but at least now I can use the apps on my device if I want to. Thanks
Typical apps block hacking (root) so the work around instead of unrooting is to go deeper with the hacks/mods
