It's an old problem I never got solved, but simply been putting up with. Now that Cyanogen ROM's can be updated OTA, I'd really like to get my phone back to normal...
Problem started after flashing DangerSPL. I may have flashed old radio while having DangerSPL, however, my phone is not bricked.
Symptoms:
1. Everytime I flash a new ROM, wipe or no wipe, I come back stuck at the T-Mobile G1 boot screen. The only way I've found to get through is to take out battery and boot into ADB (the Camera + Power screen) and "fastboot flash boot boot.img". This almost always work.
2. Nandroid stopped working. Nandroid always errors during the process of backing up, and I'd only have splash1.img and splash2.img in the nandroid folder of my SD card.
3. "Insufficient storage available" with Dude's and Cyanogen's builds. I'm not sure if this one is related to recovery or SPL. This might be caused by past attempts at doing apps2sd (I've done both symlink and unionfs).
I've tried flashing the old HardSPL, but everytime I've done that, I either get stuck at the T-Mobile G1 boot screen, or the phone always boots straight to the SPL screen (3 Android skateboards) w/o me holding the Camera button.
Only way I've been able to make my phone usable is my going back to DangerSPL.
this may suck but have you tried downgrading to rc-29 and rooting again?
btw, this is newport country

What should the process order be? Flash rc-29 first then try and revert the SPL?
start at the beginning of this:

Yessir, I agree with you 100%.
Went back to start over the rooting process, and now I'm back at booting straight the SPL screen.
I think the problem starts after I upgrade the radio to the latest. I was booting fine into rc29, but I upgraded the radio and ROM (Cyanogen) at the same time, though I'm leaning towards radio starting the problem, not the ROM.
As a workaround, does anyone know how I can flash the boot.img file to the system w/o using ADB (through recovery console)? This would remove the dependence of a computer, making my problem more acceptable.
I tried to do a "flash_image boot boot.img" but it tells me file not found. I can't see files in my SD card while in recovery console.
Figured it out, but still issues:
after "mount /sdcard" and "flash_image boot /sdcard/boot.img", I get...
"header is the same, not flashing boot"

What if you renamed boot to something else and tried to flash it? Maybe it won't flash it cause it's the same file name and the system won't flash because of it. Just my .02.
But another thing I was thinking was not to update the radio if your on RC29 since the new radio version wasn't out at the time of RC29 so it may be buggy. Then upgrade to a new rom then flash the new radio. Again just a suggestion.

I had it named 4192-boot.img actually, just was lazy to type it out on this thread.
I left the phone at the boot-straight-to-bootloader state and called T-Mobile, a replacement is on the way.

Hello i need serious help, i messed around with the new htc hero rom and everything was fine but there were still problems with this rom so i tried a factory reset/wipe and tried to install a differ version of the rom and when i rebooted the phone it keps getting stuck and reloading the hero image, so i tried to go back to the way i had the phone and short and simple now i am stuck at the skateboard screen no matter which way i boot the phone. please help
Have you tried removing the battery and re-inserting it?
yep millions of times lol, i cant even get a recovery image up only the fastboot. does anybody know if theres files i need to put on the sdcard to reflash it to factory default
If your on that screen just load up rc29 and see what it does. Start the process over.
ya i tried putting rc29 on my sd and named it update.zip but when it loads the sd it says this
SD Checking...
Loading...[DREADIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[DREADIA2.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[DREADIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!

Have you tried flashing a nandroid backup via fastboot?
u mean a back up that i created myself , yes does nothing but know i cant even get back to the recovery place to do any of the alt+* options. if you are talking about something else let me know
DREADIAG.nbh
I think you are suppose to put rc29 on your storage Card but not change the name it should still be called DREAIMG.nbh. Then reboot holding the camera button and follow the instructions.
If you can't get to the recovery for alt+*, you can flash the boot/data/system images from within fastboot.
from fastboot i dont have any options to do within its self???. im gonna try doing the rc29 thing again but rename it what u told me.
Whatevere you do, DONT FLASH RC29!!!!! You were trying hero so you must have the modified spl.. rc29 contains an old radio image and it WILL BRICK YOU.
It sounds like your recoverey image might be corrupt.. Use fastboot from your pc to flash a new one.

You need to run fastboot from the pc to flash your phone in this mode.. theres a noobs guide to adb and fastboot somewhere round here..
yes!!! thank u guys so much i tokk the file out of the zip folder and put it on my sdcard and now im back with a fully functioning rc29!
Glad to see you're back up and running
Wait.. what..? I was sure rc29 included a radio image..? Im confused
RC29
I think that rc29 does have a radio in it but it also has the stock spl. Maybe?
ya it has a radio in it but i think the hero radio was gone so thats why i was good!

I had a similar situation. Actually I'm still in that situation. After you went back to RC29 (which I've done 100 times now), were you able to flash new ROMs again?
I can only flash RC33, everything else takes me to fastboot.
RC29 includes the SPL radio and rc29 rom, but NOT the recovery image
ya im back to jf1.51....but now after doing this a couple of times cause i want the damn htc hero rom but now i cant seem to get it to work, my paid apps are gone???
So I'm in the process of recovering my phone from a near brick. Unfortunately I replaced CM recovery with the factory one, and now I get an error whenever I try to flash any rom, and I can't drop to console to install CM recovery.
When I try to flash, it verifies it, and starts to install it, but instantly stops and says "Installation Aborted" and quits. No other error whatsoever.
Thanks for any help.
same issue here
Easiest solution for both of you is to start over and reroot using THIS guide.
Downgrading will reflash spl, radio, and rom
update your recovery image??
I tried to update my recovery image, but when I went to type the command, flash_image was not found.
On another note, I just tried to put RC 29 SPL on it, but it failed, again with no errors.
Also, my phone will now only boot into bootloader mode.

How did you try to flash "RC 29 SPL" ? By the way RC29 is not an spl, it is an entire phone image including rom, radio, recovery, and spl.

Thanks for the correction.
I put DREAIMG.nbh from the link from your post on my sdcard and booted using camera + power. It asked if I wanted to start the update image so I pressed power. The loading bar almost reaches the end, but then stops and says that it terminated and the update failed.
I looked around a little and someone mentioned that sometimes the camera button gets stuck and therefore appears to only boot into bootloader mode. I took off my back panel and fiddled with it, but the camera button didn't appear to be stuck, and it still boots into bootloader every time.
My assumption is the DREAIMG.nbh got corrupted somehow, and my only option is to buy a microsd card reader and copy a new image.

Try downloading the RC29 file again from HERE, you may have a bad copy.
I bought a microsd reader and downloaded a good copy. I have yet to try to install CM recovery or flash a rom, but thanks for getting me this far.
I just finished your guide, and it all seems to work. Thanks for your help. I had another question, though. I have an ADP, but I followed your guide exactly, do I now have a rooted G1 as opposed to an ADP?
I'm glad everything worked out for you. There are minor differences but yes you have a rooted G1 with a batt cover worth bragging about.
I have a G1 with CyanogenMod 1.4 recovery and the original SPL. It boots into either of those just fine.
When I select to apply any zip, I get the list of possibilities. I have tried wiping many times.
Whenever I choose an option from the recovery or flash something, a message appears that says
Code:
E: Can't read MISC:
(No space left on device)
This occurs even after a wipe. Also, I know that the SD card is not full or corrupted (I generally use it in a different G1).
After I have flashed something and reboot, it simply hangs at the G1 boot screen. I left it for half an hour, and it stayed that way.
Any thoughts?
what are you trying to flash? rom might require danger spl. i don't have a g1, so i'm not positive, but i'm willing to bet on it.
I actually tried flashing the danger SPL. In spite of saying "reboot to complete installation," I know it does not work. if I hold Camera as I turn on, it is still the original SPL.
Next bet?

1.33.2005 is what the danger spl shows up as, which i believe is your "stock" spl. if you installed it and rebooted without any errors it works. simple and plain.
Does the danger SPL look like the original (RGB color testing)? That is what shows up when I boot with camera pressed.
I was trying to flash either Super D or CyanogenMod, when I follow the instructions for either of them and do the final reboot, it never leaves the G1 logo screen. Yes I know that it is a while for the dalvik-cache to be reworked.
I have flashed roms successfully many times on my other G1.
I am very curious what the error message that I posted earlier means. Thanks for your suggestions!
Sorry for the double post. I have an update. I am pretty sure there is a problem with the NAND chip or something similar. I flashed the Amon_RA recovery, and it worked. I used Amon_RA to wipe, and re-partition the SD card. I then tried flashing the HTC 1.6 image for ADP1. And it worked. It booted into 1.6 with no problem (except that I no longer had root). So I tried to get root again. First I tried the Recovery Flasher app. It said that it failed. So I downloaded the DREAIMG.nbh to get back to RC29. When I ran it, I got
Code:
DREAIMG.nbh - FAIL
Update Terminate
UPDATE FAIL
Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
[RESOLVED]
UPDATE: Apparently that last bit ended with bricking the phone. I took out the SD, put DREAIMG.nbh back on it. Put it back in the phone. Re-flashed from the SPL (holding camera while pressing power). It worked. I then went through with regular rooting, putting Amon_RA on there, with Super D 1.8. Everything smooth. I have no idea what really fixed it, but everything works fine.

Yeah.... I wish my brick would go into SPL.
*sorry double post, browser messed up*
I haven't touched my Rogers G1 rom, it is as stock as they come. One day the battery died, so I plugged the phone to charge and also tried to start it up.
My problem started after that.
I will try to restart the phone and it'll get stuck on boot screen - where it says HTC or sometimes even just the Rogers screen.
Only solution is to take battery out, do hard reset.
I've searched the forums but everybody else asks regarding modded roms and not stock.
Any idea how I could resolve this issue without flashing new roms? Or is that my only way out?
Thanks.
Did you apply Rogers mandatory 911 update that was released about a year ago? You can check by booting into fastboot mode (hold the camera button while powering it on). If your radio version is 3.22.26.17 you have the update. Rogers locked down fastboot in this latest update and the only way to root it is through the ROM. If you don't have this update I can walk you though the steps to root your phone though fastboot.
Just checked and it does have the update.
Should I just go ahead and flash new roms?
I keep having the same issue as before.
With the latest update Rogers locked down fastboot so it is useless. So, I don't believe that there is any way to flash a new ROM without first booting into your existing ROM.
Sorry but I'm inexperienced with flashing roms...
If I can't flash by the fastboot method, I can still flash by rooting the phone, correct?

I'm not completely sure, but usually you need to be able to get into the rom to root. Maybe there is another way.
6 hours later and i got nowhere...
I rooted phone, flashed new cyanogen rom, setup amon ra's recovery but I didn't do new radio since my current is one of the newer ones.
The booting goes nowhere as soon as the rogers logo shows at the beginning of boot up.
Would a new radio help? Could that be the issue?
edit:
The phone rebooted properly and now I have a working fone!
Wait, how did you root the phone without getting into the ROM?

I used the Androot method, copied onto sd card, launched file via file manager app on phone and it rooted the phone. This is how I remember anyways - I fiddled with the phone for good part of the afternoon so my memory is all over the place with the specifics.
I used this site for rooting.
I thought you said in the op that you couldn't boot into the ROM (got stuck on boot screen). So, what was the problem in the first place? (or how did you fix the ROM?)
Sorry I guess I wasn't clear enough in op.
The only way I could get to use the phone was to do a hard reset and let the phone boot up from there, however if I ever wanted to turn the phone off or restart the phone it would get stuck on the next boot up.
I was able to flash the rom by constantly hard reseting the phone every time I needed to put files onto the memory card.
I've had my phone for over 2 years, rooted it the second day (I know I was a late bloomer). Never had an issue with a new ROM load failing.
Now Froyo for trout failed on me....it went fine (no errors), but I'm stuck at the G1 screen and I can't think of how to recover from this...
Note: I did try searching but I got no hits.
T-Mobile G1, Amon-Ra 1.7
Thanks.
sorry - Panicked
Amon-Ra recovery menu comes up - tried to wipe data and factory reset, same issue, boots to G1 and just sits there.
Any suggestions?
Guess I spoke too soon..
Well, I tried to do a factory reset on the phone after Froyo trout failed, but it doesn't work.
Is this bricking the phone?
I can boot to AMON-RA, but I have no valid image loaded, it goes to G1 and just sits there. Is this recoverable in any way?
Thanks....

What radio and SPL did you use?
I tried to load 2708 - didn't check the load, no errors, so assumed it work, anxious to get Froyo - however it appears it did not work. I have Radio 2.22.23.02 running according to the rainbow screen....aaargh
Amon-RA does come up - Since I cannot boot, the only thing that occurs to me is to put my SD card into another phone or maybe a computer with a Micro SD ram slot and upload the 2708 radio?
FROM "around the world" Thanks much,
Ok, plug your g1 into your usb, go into bootloader (Home+power), press alt+x, and type in "echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file" without the quotations. Then your computer should be able to access the sdcard, then just simply put the update.zip file on the card and reflash it.
this works perfectly for putting data to SD.
trying to start over
I tried to wipe and load 2708, it errors out and won't install...It probably failed loading earlier and I just didn't notice.
Back to stock, need to find how to reload FLASH_IMAGE it is not obvious how to add it to the BIN file...+Amon-Ra...
I can't find another source for 2708 radio, anyone else?

Nice, I couldn't find that
