So my question is, is it possible to get the FB connection to none Hero Rom builds? Please some one tell me yes n how to... Only reason im on Hero n hate it bc still missing texts
Integration...Non.
And I'm sure if someone can make an app for that...and they have the need to...they will, but to have FB integration in the stock contacts apk is highly unlikely unless google does it themselves.

So is there actually a way to "get a google voice account?" I mean, it seems to me to be invite only.

This really isn't the best advice, since to '[g]et a google voice account' would require being on one of Google's magic invitation lists, and that's managed only by Google.

I didn't make this program so I'm not gaining any money off anyone downloading and paying for it but its a program called SMStoGmail. ALL your SMS are sent to your gmail account. Those that come in and send out. The only issue i having it with are: No MMS =( Ok thats it... Also for set up make sure to go on computer and set filter so anything with "smstogmail.rly.gd" goes into your in box and never marked as Spam. Maybe once there is an update it'll do MMS but for now, you NEVER have to worry about another miss text again!!! So this way when ever you get a text it sends a copy to your email and you get a notice even if you don't get the text to your phone!!!
Uh, try Facebook Sync on the market. It syncs all your contact photos with your friends on Facebook, I used this to make myself feel better because I wasn't using a Hero build.

[Q] texting over wifi?

So my question is... can I text over wifi?
Here are the details: In two of my college classes, I get no signal, but have great wifi access. I want to be able to use something to text over wifi while in those classes. I just installed google voice after a quick google search... but it seems like you have to change this to be a permanent default messaging app (which I havent even tried to do). Most posts Ive run across have been people that want to text for free, but I have unlimited so thats not an issue. I really like handcent, so is there a way to text over wifi or an app just for those two classes or while Im at school or something without having to change the default messaging app 2x a day?
Thanks in advance for responses =]
You can't send SMS messages over a Wi-Fi connection with your default messaging app, so that's out of the question. You can use GV, but it you don't need to make it your default messaging app to send or receive anything. If you bring your computer to class, you could use Gmail, the Google Voice website(Which would be faster than your phone), AIM, or you could just not text anyone in those couple of classes and pay attention. In fact, that's what I recommend.
Pingchat is free, awesome and multiplatform (android, blackberry, iphone). Your friends also need a smartphone of course.

Okay MOM haha. Ill see If I can use GV for just a temporary fix... and Id rather not bring my laptop to school, its an inconvenience. My phone fits in my pocket. My classes are really easy and sometimes my text message conversations are much more interesting.

I actually use GV as my primary form of SMS (I opt out of SMS on my plan) for unlimited SMS and free SMS to Canada.
If you do go that route, I recommend using this older version:

The newer version has an annoying lag to it.

Thats seems okay, the only problem with that is that I would have to ask all of my friends to install that, and not all of them have phones that can install apps. So that is a good idea, but I dont think it would work.
I have a small SMS plan with ATT. I downloaded the GV app and leave it running. I see no lag for what I use it for.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
So I tried google voice and I can still make outgoing text messages without having it be my default app. So I think this still wins for people in my situation. I had a heck of a time getting a google number though, I ended up just doing it through my gmail and it was much easier.
Thanks guys for all the helpful advice!!

Send SMS Messages from tablet via Bluetooth via Android Phone

I've googled and googled and only kinda found something similar but it's only in source code (don't know how to compile) and doesn't appear finished...
Is there an app that will allow me to send SMS messages using my tablet, which sends over bluetooth to my phone, which then sends the SMS message out into SMS land?
Thanks!
Why to bother??? Use email to send SMS.
For instance if I need to send SMS to my phone using ANY computer (including G-tab), the way to do it is (Example for T-mobile): [email protected].
Where XXX-XXX-XXXX is your phone number.
I think it has to work with any provider, although @ part will differ from carrier to carrier.
Hope it helps.
I'm very familiar with that ability and you're right, that is one solution but not really one I'm looking for.
I'm really looking for an app for my tablet that is extremely similar to a standard sms app that will work off of my contacts list etc etc. Anyone else care to share their 2 cents?
(Assumes you're on a network and in USA)
Get a Google Voice Account and use the app to SMS.
Yep, another solution.
Anybody know of an app that does what I'm asking rather than just a workaround?
Example: ai.kittywolf.net/index.php/SMS_via_BlueTooth
Yeah man, there are a bunch of solutions. I like the google voice idea.

Okay, right, so as I've specified I'm looking specifically for an app that specifically does sms via bluetooth via phone... this is not google voice and it's not email to sms...
Anybody have anything to add regard my specific question rather than something to do with a workaround?
Just want to put this out there.
With Google Voice you can send SMS txt to your contacts for FREE!
No need for BT because you would use your wi-fi tether option on your android phone in the event you're not in an area where you can connect to the internet with out tethering to your phone.
Still not what I'm asking for but I appreciate the suggestion for google voice. My problem with google voice basically centers around the phone number. I would have to port my existing cell number to gv and get a new cell phone number (also $20 for the port). I don't want to get a new phone number and I don't really want to commit to the extent that i'm porting my beloved phone number to google.
All I want is an app... extremely simple concept and my guess is that the programming isn't terribly difficult...
The response you are looking for is
NO!
The reason is no bluetooth DUN support in the gtab kernels. You always get a paired but not connected via bluetooth.
If you really want to use your phone you need to tether the gtab to the phone (plenty of options - search is the key), and then use handcent or similar.

Heres a thread I started in the Xoom section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977688
Basically my idea, which I outlined in there is as follows:
I've been thinking about this alot over the past couple of days even to the point that I began to investigate and play around with the Android SDK to see what I might be able to do, which is not alot at the moment.
I thought of this app functioning as follows:
1) We currently have a bunch of applications that allow the user to view and respond to their text messages through an interface on the browser or computer application using an app on the phone that "broadcasts" the messaging features of the phone out over either WiFi or bluetooth. (For example, the ones mentioned earlier in this thread.)
2) We also have something called "Remote Notifier" that sends out a "ping" when a new message is received to a listening service on a computer which notifies the user on the desktop.
3) If the existing functionality of those two are combined, we have an application that can put together a list of the messages on the phone (primary location), send it out to a secondary location (in this case a tablet), while also notifying the secondary location (tablet) of a new message received.
The app on the phone also gives the secondary location the ability to respond and edit the message list on the phone.
4) The second piece of the equation we would need is an app for the tablet, preferably optimized for the screen size in a 5manner similar to the way Gmail and the native email client handle messaging, (with a list of messages on the left, and the conversation view on the right) that allows the user to browse their messages on the phone and reply within the app.
If the app on the tablet could "look" to the phone as the service provider instead of the network, I could even see notifications being created from within that app and displayed on the tablet just as if it was actually receiving the texts itself.

I would appreciate any and all help or comments relating to the idea. I think i'll repost it in the main android apps section, since really its not specific to any one tablet.
try this
http://www.kakao.com/talk/en
to the op i totally understand what u want and am also interested.
pairing the tablet with android phone using bluetooth so when u received sms you get notified in your tablet an you be able to replay using your tablet wich will make the phone send this message without u having to remove ur phone from your pocket.
all the solutions mentioned are using wifi, which is a different thing.
i currently use a combination of apps to achieve wifi sms connectivity
remoteSMS + sms2Email buddy. (for notification) this works well in home wifi.
i would be very interested in a blutooth solution (it might be crippled cz it has to be close, but it doesnt need data connectivity chargs)
so +1 for the requesr, please let me know if u found a solution
Well thanks for agreeing with me that it's not a dumb request... No luck so far... keep ya posted if I come up with something.
its not dump at all, .. it has an advantage of not using any wifi / 3g data connecitivty, it would be like having a PadPhone (sms PadPhone)
and actually its not that hard as someone said.
the bluetooth does not have to have an sms api for the app to work, the tablet app could send a text file and the phone app receives the text file, parses it and send a message using the sms api (normal apps can use sms api) and vice versa for receiving an sms .. app gets a copy of the sms received, put it in a text file, sends it to the tablet app using bluetooth, tablet app parses the file and shows it.
i would start developing it but it would take me a long time as am sill noobish in android development, ... if someone could take the lead let me know i might be able to help a little.

Try "Sync SMS"
It still requires wifi, but can send and receive sms's from your tablet via your phone.
Any SMS you receive will go to both your phone and tablet. You can reply from either phone or tablet.
It requires a free Dropbox account.
The whole process of transferring sms's back and forth takes about 20_30 seconds and requires no action on your part.
However in the end I just got a separate Google voice number for my g-tablet and use that.

[APP] SyncSMS - Synchronize text messages between tablet and phone

I had this in the Xoom thread because it was Honeycomb-only, initially, but now it supports all Android tablets:
This will only work if your tablet is running a ROM that is properly linked to the Android market, otherwise you will get a market license failure.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010597
Interesting. This will allow us to text from the gtablet? Or are they just viewable files?
you compose messages via the tablet, then they get synced to the phone, and the phone actually sends the message out. conversely, the phone receives a message, syncs it to the tablet, and is viewable via the syncsms app
Thanks for bringing this up...very interesting
Doesn't this require a wireless or some other type of connection between the phone and the tablet? I remember looking at this and that was what threw me off of it.
as long as the phone and tablet both have a data connection (could be separate connections), you will be go to go =]

would be possible, but i didn't want to require that. also, some devices don't support proper bluetooth settings and the radio uses battery. i figured an alarm-driven polling method would be more battery efficient. plus, i am in the final stages of testing push notification-driven updates
Would it be possible to set this up so that i get the emails in my gmail on my computer? or would i need the app on my gtab to see the messages? only reason i ask is because my phone in my office has zero service and im thinking that having this may fix that issue if i just leave my phone in my car and than i can get my texts in my gmail, since i already see my voicemails and missed calls in my gmail with youmail.
Thanks.

ClockworkMod DesktopSMS: Sending and receiving texts from your XOOM (and desktop)

DesktopSMS forwards all your incoming SMS on your *Android Phone* to your Gmail to GTalk.
You can then reply to the chat request or email, and the response will be sent back from your phone as a text message. This is very similar to Google Voice, except you won't need a new number or anything annoying like that!
http://app.net/desktopsms
Installation:
1) Install DesktopSMS on your ANDROID PHONE. (Not onto your XOOM)
2) Login to Desktop SMS on your ANDROID ****PHONE****.
3) Install a Chat client like Google Talk (which may already be on your XOOM) onto your XOOM or desktop PC.
4) Receive a text. Watch as your text gets converted to an email and google chat message
5) Respond!
So, once again, this app is only installed on your phone. Then just install your favorite IM client on your desktop and tablet, and the rest will work magically!
You do not need to install this on both your phone and tablet like other apps. You do not need to be on the same network like other apps. This all works by magic (my servers).
Let me know what you think. This is in a free beta right now, so be prepared for some bugs! I'd love to hear your feedback.

well, I don't have a smart phone so thats a problem.
I, like many others, have ditched their smartphomes and activated their xooms. I now only have a dummy phone. I didn't see a need in paying for two data plans because I ws rarey using my phone. Now I use it to talk and text.... even though I wish it was only to talk.
I am waiting for the day that I can SMS on my Xoom using my current phone number. Guess I'll jabe to keep waiting. lol
Works awesome...just had a conversation with myself, through gtalk. Hahaha havnt tried it with my xoom yet. But im pretty sure it will work just fine. Very good job
It looks great but I cannot seem to get it to work yet, Mr. Koush. I have it signed it with push notifications successfully on my gmail account on my OG Droid. I can do the test message from within the app and it pops up on my phone like always, but other than that it does nothing on my Xoom, or on anything else for that matter. It seems almost like the push notifications are not even being sent out.
EDIT: I found out what the problem was. I had the default messaging app totally disabled, as I am using Handcent SMS as a complete replacement to the default one. I would like to use Handcent SMS instead of the default one. I know its beta and I cannot wait for updates!

It looks like after you receive your first text from that person after you accepted the "chat invite" on your Gtalk account it syncs up with your current contact list automatically. It shows the phone number on the left side of the screen under your gmail account, but in the chat window it shows that contacts name in parenthesis.
This ofcourse is for if you are using the Xoom with Gtalk, such as myself. I haven't tried anything else yet.
Could it be that the contacts NAME will be in the gtalk LIST instead of phonenumber ?
OK, being a bit thick here.
I'm using GoSMS Pro, but as far as I know, the default messaging app is still active, just without any notifications... does this make a difference?
Not currently receiving any notifications in email or g-talk... :/

I can correctly Login with Google Account, but get an error on 'registering with push server....' (takes long and eventually times out)

here is a log... maybe it helps analyze why i can't connect with the push servers...

So that's cool, then I send the test. GoSMS then pops up the text, as it always does.
However, it still doesn't appear to be sending me an email.
When it says "please verify that it has not disabled SMS notifications in the application's settings", does it mean the default Messaging app?
I've tested by disabling the taskbar notification for GoSMS and re-enabling it for the default Messaging app, but even then, there is no sound nor visual cue that an SMS has arrived... is this why it's not working? Has GoSMS broken my default messaging app?
