bootloader screen flahes when powering on - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok i have run into this weird issue with my G1. it was working perfectly fine yesterday. i turned it off and charged it until it was fully charged like i usually do, but when i turned it on the boot loader screen flashed and the phone turned off! this happens whenever i try to turn the phone on. i cant get into recovery becuase the bootloader screen just flashes. when i try to get to the bootloader screen, it starts up fine but then looks for an image and turns off again. this started happening a few days after flashing haykuros spl if that helps. am i bricked or is there a way to fix this? thanks in advanced
edit: i am also usin the latest experimental build from cyanogen although i dont think this is the problem.
edit2: i managed to get my phone to start up, but im afarid to switch it off just incase it starts happening again so im still looking for a solution to this problem.
edit3: ok back to square one, my phone froze after fully booting up, restarted itself and now the problem is back! wow this is annoying.

it sounds like your camera button could be stuck. if you want to test this type reboot recovery into the recovery console and see if it boots into recovery or bootloader.
check and see if your camera button is stuck or partially stuck since you were able to boot it up once at least

Do you have fastboot working? if so, you can grab your nandroid backups from your SD card and flash them.
or go to cyanogens thread, download the recovery and flash the recovery using the fastboot command to install. i believe its
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
but plz confirm before you do that
EDIT: david means use adb since you cant get into recovery
adb shell reboot recovery

he said he got the phone up and running i meant if he wanted to see if it was a software problem he could type reboot recovery into the terminal emulator and see if he got the bootloader screen or the recovery screen.
also i believe the fastboot commands you posted are correct.

ok thanks for the help guys. before reading your posts a left the phone for a few wins powered it on and now mt phone has booted up and it is working. i will try your solutions still though. i am not sure if i have fast boot working. when the bootloader screen flashed i do remeber it saying fastboot so does that mean i have it running?
edit: camera button seems to be fine although i havent tried the rebbot recovery yet though lol because i need my phone an im not sure if i can get it working again.

do you have adb set up

yeah, although im using the 1.5 sdk and not the latest 1.6 does that matter?

if you have adb you will need to have the fastboot.exe (which i think is in the tools folder of the sdk) so cd to the sdk tools folder then use
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
(also have the recovery.img in the tools folder for this)

ok thanks my phone froze so i had to turn it off and now i am back to square 1 again is there anything besides the camera button that could be casuing this?

i cant get into fast boot...the screen with 3 androids on skateboards flashes once really quickly and thats it :/

can anyone help me? the camera button seems to be fine and not stuck. is there another factor that could be causing this? i think i might try unrooting then going through all the steps to root it again. or flashing back to the hardspl and see what happens.
update: i managed to get the phone to boot up again so i went into terminal and typed reboot recovery and i got to the recovery screen ok, but when i pressed home + back to restart the phone the bootloader screen flashed again really quickly :/ it also seems like if i leave the phone off for a few hours it will power up fine but when it is turned off i have to wait another few hours til i can switch it back on.

this sounds like a hardware problem instead of a software problem since there is still a recovery screen, if your phone is still under warranty call your provider and see if there is anything they can do about it, and if they send you another one, just unroot the one you have

my phone isnt under warranty so looks like i will either have to put up with or buy myself a new one. thanks for the help.

If your sure your camera button isn't stuck, check your back button. If not, maybe some sweat or water got into it. some type of hardware dmg possibly. If your the do it yourself type of person, theres always this handy dandy notebook, I mean service manual

ahh yes that would make sense seeing as the bootloader screen says fastboot so it must be a problem with the back button. never thought of that. thanks for the help.

ok assuming that the back button is the problem, if i were to flash back to the hard spl would this problem go away seeing as fastobot mode only works with the 'special' spl?

Bricked G1?

New to G1 and have a problem. Bought a G1 and it came with elcaires rom I think it was.
So I downloaded UK RC7, renamed it to Update, and placed it on the root of my card.
Held the home and power button, and tried to install but I'm getting installation aborted each time. I've also tried to wipe, but that gets aborted too.
I rebooted and now its stuck on G1 screen
I hope somebody can help, had the phone an hour and I've mucked it up already.
Thanks in advance
Im also "bricked" at the loading screen, i turn it on and it gets frozen at the tmobile screen. Home+power, camera+power, Alt+L etc dont work.
Is this fixable?

No. It's Not.
if its not than what should he and i do?
Are you trying to boot into recovery while its in the G1 screen?
yo my name is sammy as well and i swear i just did the same thing with my g1 on eclair. hit me up dude on [email protected]. we can try and help each other out. plus i love the uk man. i never been, but plan too very soon. i love the music and the accents of the women, oh god. hit me up bro!
If you cannot access recovery or bootloader, you have a rather expensive paperweight. If you can, then you have hope.

It is not so expensive since it be can brought for less than 100>$$
You can fix it by replacing the board with one from a working phone which is not the easiest thing to do.
hey ill take one of those paper weights... I need a new screen...
in the same boat cant get into anything hung up on splash screen
maybe our only option is jtag, ive never bricked before i always put cm 4 then go and install cm5 above that and it worked but this time it told me to go kick rocks and and and it was a customers phone so i gave him mine which is running eclair.
you guys arn't bricked. If you can turn on the phone than your perfectly fine.
You just gotta learn how to use it
G1 hanged at white screen!
Hi all,
I really need a help here. I have a G1 rooted with CM rom ver5. it was working fine since 3 months but suddenly now the phone doesnt boots up, it goes to white screen with 3 droid skaters and highlight on Hboot. It is freezed then and nothing can be done. I removed battery and tried booting by home + power ; camera+power etc etc . nothing happens it goes to that screen only. i have amons recovery and also nand backups in sd card. but the system doesnt let me go any where!! Please help......
attached is the snapshot
Either your back-button hangs, or something messed up your phone completely.
But as long as you have the fastboot mode, it's not bricked. I would suggest you to clean everything, i.e.
Code:
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
and then flash recovery again, i.e.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <recover.img>
After that you can boot into recovery and restore your latest backup.
Please note: fastboot is a command you execute on your PC and you have to connect your phone with USB to your PC.
If after that procedure your phone boots again into hboot, most likely your back-button is defect.
I myself I think got a bricked G1...
I first installed many custom roms and thought that they were slowing my g1 so I wanted to get my g1 back to normal... For that I googled and was gone to the htc official website and ported the radio and rom from there but unfortunately I read it somewhere and it said that the rom is for only developers phone.
Everything first went very good... no error on clockwork recovery but when I reboot my phone, it got stuck on T-mobile G1 logo screen? I now can not even go to recovery mode or in fastboot mode? I need help...
Someone told me to use odin multi loader? but how do I use it or do it?? I need some instructions?
What should I do now? All I want to do right now is to get rid of my g1 by fixing it and selling it at once!!!
before flashing radio, spl, rom...anything...u need to check out the warnings and compatibility-MUST!!!!
there are 32B and 32A devices...both have different stuffs for themselves....which can be bricked if u dont follow the guidelines and try to act in sort of a haste to accomplish something new!!!
for those who can get to the camera+power (hboot) screen, but cant do anything else...u need to format ur sdcard...FAT32...then download dreaimg.nbh file...keep it in the root of ur sdcard...
then boot into the hboot menu, and ur phone should read the dreaimg.nbh file and prompt u to take an action(flash it)....do that and it'll get ur phone to the stock rom thingy....
then later u gotta root ur device again(telnet, great)....then install amon ra's recovery...change radio and what not and play again....
u gotta be patient...that's the only thing!!!
check this too

phone semi bricked

ok the phone is not bricked an i know there is only one way to brick a hero blah blah blah. but i have psfmod recovery flashed to my phone and i was trying to do the firats mtd partition thing. so i did everything it said and when it came time to do adb shell, reboot recovery it wouldnt work. so after about 5 minutes i realized that the computer wasnt recognizing my phone. i guess cause of the psfmod recovery. and i had already wiped everything. so i wiped everything again and flash zenaraia rom back on. but after rebooting it just stays at the white HTC screen. waited for an hour. i tried wiping and reflashing like 20 times. and i cant mount the sdcard to put another rom on there since the computer wont recognize my phone. anybody following me? lol any suggestions?
It seems like you might need to RUU... have you tried doing that?

Haha I came here just to possibly rip on the OP when I read the title but saw you already mentioned it :/ So you put it in your thread title anyway?
As the guy said before, try running the RUU - should be able to be done in the bootloader.
OR if you can boot up into a rom (wasn't too sure judging by what I read) just get a Dropbox, throw a rom.zip on it, get the app for the phone, sync and bam. New rom.zip on your phone to try.
If neither one can be done, you need to find another phone, camera, sdmount...something so you can add files to it. Even if its just a HERCIMG.zip to update via the bootloader (look up s-off if you don't know what that's about)
Good luck
thanks for your help guys. i'll try the RUU but i dont think it will work since my computer wont recognize my phone while in bootloader. im pretty sure it's just the psfmod recovery that f'd everything up. and yeah i cant boot into a rom. im hoping that somehow my rom.zip just got messed up somehow.
ok yeah RUU didnt work. my only other option is to find a laptop or something
Try getting a live Fedora or Ubuntu linux cd (or any flavor for that matter) and booting it up.
what would that do? i went back to the psfreedom thread and i saw that adb and usb mass storage does not work with that recovery. i should have read better lol
Same thing happenned to my evo..i kept tryna flash the wrong kernel wit nym rom..all i did wuss flashed the rom without da kernel and walla...it started workin again..thnx god..idk if dis would help but it worked for me..

yay !!! im just quoting this because this bears repeating...
1 - if recovery is not working, go into fastboot to get pc to recognize phone...
2 - if roms (recovery or whatnot) are not working, reflash to RUU to start fresh...
(and adding)
3 - once youve started fresh, then flash a working-recovery and go back to your latest [nandroid] backup...
(you always have a good backup to use, right ?) h.
I think all you had to do was flash a different recovery from terminal if you were able to boot up the reason y I didn't use that mod was the fact you can't use adb wen u flash that recovery in that post I think the op posted the link to the old recovery that allowed you to use adb good luck
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
that was the problem. i couldnt boot to a rom cause i had erased all data and my rom.zip had got corrupted somehow. and with that recovery you couldnt do adb or usb mass storage. so i started freaking out lol. thanks again nfinite
So I'm having a similar problem. I can use ADB to reboot my phone, so I know the computer is talking to the phone but it wont get past the HTC screen. I was trying the firerat mod and made it to the reboot as well but it never came back up. If I reboot to recovery its a white screen with the android on the skate board but the only option is to clear user data and then reboot again which goes back to the HTC screen. I tried the RUU but it wont install because it says my phone doesnt have enough battery (it's been charging on and off for the better part of 24 hours now.) Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.
first, can you use usb mass storage? if so the you need to put a rom on your sdcard and flash it and see if that fixed it. and if you want to RUU. then pull the battery and put it back. then hold volume up and power at the same time. then hit the button it says to to go into fastboot. you should already be in fastboot though. and then while in fastboot plug the phone into the pc and you may have to install drivers. and then you can run the RUU.
I'm not exactly sure what happened but i got it working. I ran "adb reboot-bootloader" from the menu that brought up i was able to get back to the clockwork recovery, restore my nandroid and finish the mod. all appears to have worked beautifully except that last night my battery went completely dead over night (for the first time) although i'm doubting that that has anything to do with any of this

Go to the H-Boot screen and it should show that if you push the "home" button to get into recovery. Go into recovery and format system, data, cache, and boot. Then, reflash a new rom or restore a nandroid. I don't know what you were doing to get into the situation that you are/were in.
The H-Boot searches for a HERCIMG.zip (Herc is for Hero CDMA), if you are S-on, I am not sure if you can even RUU or not (there is a thread about fastboot though). You might be able to though, but you are ok as long as you can get into recovery. If you can, follow those steps above (those are for using clockwork recovery) and you should be ok if you were only messing around with folders in the system. In fact, you might not need to wipe anything but just flash a new rom. Why not start fresh though?
Good luck! I would suggest getting S-off, it has saved me time and headaches.
thank you but...

I am having the exact same issue (I think). Randomly in the middle of the night my phone rebooted. Now it only gets to the HTC boot screen and then reboots again.
I tried booting into recovery, but it just goes back to the HTC screen.
I did not recently flash any new ROMs and have been using the same version of CM7 for awhile now. I was using Clockwork recovery. Nothing I do can get past the HTC screen. I tried all the options suggested. I even placed a new recovery image on the sdcard hoping that would work.
Any more ideas?

Stuck in bootloop, can't enter Bootloader after unlock

Hi XDA,
I currently have an issue with my One, I'm stuck at the white HTC-screen where it says "powered by android" at the bottom, I can't get into the bootloader, no matter what I try (I've tried every combination there is, multiple times) the PC detects an Android ADB Interface, but it says "unauthorized".
This happened after I unlocked my bootloader regularly via the HTC Dev-method.
If I type "adb reboot bootloader" into a command prompt, it says "error: device unauthorized. Please check the confirmation dialog on your device." but there is nothing on my screen other than the splash-logo.
Is there anything I could do?
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
edit:
I just noticed that the softkeys don't flash when I hold down the power-button, not sure if this helps you determine the error.
No ideas? :/

This is a long shot, try Ubuntu/Linux. You can boot into it without installing Linux on your computer and it handles ADB & Fastboot more smoothly. Read and follow FAQ Q5, you must install Ubuntu 12.04 for these procedures to work. If you install the newest version, there are several more steps. Just scroll down the first page and near the bottom there is a link to older versions. If you get fastboot working, then I would try a fastboot erase cache first with fastboot reboot to see if the problem is resolved. If that didn't work then try to get back to bootloader and select factory reset.

The other problem is that your phone is not recognized by Windows. If Ubuntu recognizes your phone, then you may be able to use the adb reboot bootloader command. It is a shot in the dark but if it works then great, if not you are in the same place you are now.
If you are S-OFF then try to find a RUU to run, if you are S-ON then you can not run a RUU with an unlocked bootloader.

Has it been stuck at that white screen all this time? You may need to wait until the battery dies and see if it will reboot properly from there.

I left it there for about an hour, no change.
There also isn't anything to boot into, I wiped /system/ and /data/ before unlocking the bootloader.
I was trying to get S-Off and it didn't work with CyanogenMod, so I locked the bootloader and tried to install an RUU and of course, that doesn't work if you don't have S-Off, so I wanted to unlock it again and install a sense based ROM after that, but that's where I got stuck in this bootloop.
In retrospect, it probably was really stupid to wipe those partitions before. Not sure what I was thinking at the time :/
I'll try Ubuntu tomorrow and I'll try it with a brighter light, maybe that works. Otherwise I just have to send it in. Worst that could happen is that they somehow get into the bootloader and discover that it says Tampered, but at that point they can just send it back and with a working bootloader I can fix it myself.

Sorry, I was thinking that if you ran it down, then plugged it in, you might be able to get into the bootloader.
Battery's full right now, do you think it will get empty over night?

hold the power plus volume down for about 20 seconds when the phone shuts off and comes back on continue holding the buttons till it goes off for a second time. Then let go of power and continue to hold volume down. This has got me into the bootloader many time's. Do this in a well lit room or under a lamp.

If it's stuck on the white screen, yeah that should run it down pretty quickly.
But I'm thinking now this might be a bit risky. It will stay on until the battery dies completely instead of shutting down properly. Normally, the system will shut down with a little bit of charge left because if the battery goes completely dead, it may not be able to restart.
I'd try your other ideas first, and if you're ready to return it, give this a shot.

If I release the power-button when the screen turns black the second time, it just stays off.
It's almost as if the volume-buttons aren't recognized at all :/
@iElvis okay then that'll be my last resort.

well running the battery dead will not be any different than the shutdown you just did. did you continue to hold volume down and hit the power again after the shut down ? is the usb plugged in this hole time or no?

Yep, I held the button all the time, tried waiting longer and everything, I have already played around with combinations a fair bit before posting this, nothing seemed to work.
Why can't HTC have something like USB Jigs? :/ It's so convenient to just plug this thing in and be in download-mode, regardless how f*cked up your software is.

Thanks I just got this thing back from a 2 week repair because the volume-buttons wouldn't work, barely had it a day and now I can send it back again My own fault, but still annoying...

Update:
The place where I sent it to just messaged me this:
http://imgur.com/npdyLgO
I'm curious, how did they manage to get the bootloader working again? Is there another method for getting into the bootloader, other than pressing the buttons?
They want 218€ for fixing it (lol) so I obviously told them to send it back without fixing it, after all I can do that myself if the bootloader works.
Edit:
just got it back, Bootloader works now.

Help, I can't get back to stock!!!

Hello my fellow friends in HTC Desire 626s Metro PCs land.
This is Isaiah speaking. I've run into a little misfortune here and I wanted to know if someone would be kind enough to help me out.
I have seemed to get myself in a little snag, were for some reason after I relock my phone, it won't reboot the system. What happens is, it boots right into download mode. So I unlocked it again and guess what. Everything booted normally.
Then I go to unlock it again, it jumps right back to download mode. I'm going bonkers over here, like Willy Wonka bonkers because i can't figure out why I can't relock my phone without it going right back to download mode. I flashed stock recovery through cmd, before I relocked it, that didn't work. All I did was root my phone. No debloated roms or anything. Just simply rooted my phone. I'm on Android 6.0.1. Somebody will you please help me get back to stock. Sigh, momma told there'd be days like this! Lol!!! I had to throw in a little humor.
I had the exact same problem. I found a possible fix. If you are just trying to get back to the recovery area.
Press and hold the power and volume down keys then release the power.
Once on the download mode screen scroll to Reboot to bootloader
Once in the bootloader area select Reboot to recovery mode.
This is the only way I can get to recovery mode.

What i'm trying to do is actually get back to the stock recovery so that I can re-flash the official ruu file from the official HTC Roms Website because my phone has not been running smoothly on the ota update they sent out in July. I figured since the the sites ruu file is 1.32gb and the actual ota update was 845mb, may-be there's something in the ruu that will fix this issue.
I already tried unrooting it by flashing stock recovery through command prompt then going back and re-locking my device. But after I re-locked my phone, instead of it rebooting normally where it goes to the boot animation, then loads the welcome screen to allow you to go through putting your wifi info and email address etc. It returns to download mode, or boot loader mode. Then every time I restart my phone it does the same thing and it goes back to the same screen. But when I re-unlock it, it boots fine.

Just don't lock the boot loader, I didn't lock my boot loader to run the RUU. My phone was running the firmware that if came with and I had unlocked the boot loader, flashed TWRP, and rooted. All I did was flash the stock recovery then ran the RUU(it didn't work turned off so I booted into fastboot) and it updated.
Problem solved

Thank you so much for your advice. It worked like a charm. Consider this case closed. I downloaded the official ruu file for my particular carrier and left the boot loader unlocked, but installed the stock recovery through command prompt. Then, I connected my device to my pc via usb as instructed through the ruu. Then, zing.....watched it zap my phone with the stock rom of 6.0.1. Solved my lagging issues as well as my network switching issues as well. For some strange reason, my device kept switching between different carriers which caused me not to be able to sent text messages. I was like "What in the Doc Brown Marty McFly is going on here!!!" Had me like Doc Brown "Great Scott!!!!" LOL!! Thanks buddy for your advice though. Problem Solved.:good::highfive::victory::victory:

I will upload it so that you can dowload it. Make sure when you go in to command prompt that you type exactly what it says "Stock_Recovery.img" without the parenthesis of course. Thats what i had to do. it will look like this when you type it in "fastboot flash recovery Stock_Recovery.img"
Link below.

PS. Also, when I used the Rom update utility it failed once. But if you look carefully at the picture instructions on the screen, it tells you to unplug your usb cable and pull out the battery. But of course we both know we can't take out the battery. So what you do is, just unplug the usb, but don't restart your phone. Leave it on the screen where it stopped on. When you get to the screen where it tells you to plug your usb back in, then you plug it back in. After that, you just follow the instructions on the screen of the ruu, and it will begin flashing your device with the stock rom. That was the step I kept missing. To unplug the usb and then plug it back in when the ruu says to.
