is there any way to have not use the whole swap partition e.g. have 96mb swap but only use 64mb?
Why not make the parition size 64mb not 96mb?
because if i want to us ehero i want a 96mb swap however sometimes i switch back to cupcake and 96mb is too big and i cant be bothered to keep re-partitioning my card
hope you're good with math.
total size of my card is 4100
FAT32 0 3344
EXT3 3344 3844
LINUX-SWAP 3844 3940
There is enough room after the ext3 partition for a 256MB swap. I am only using 96MB and the other 160MB is just unpartitioned space. It's fairly easy to change the size if you use david1171's guide which is post 4 HERE

I have a couple questions about swap.
I am currently running the swap file from my EXT3 partition on JACHERO. It was all running very very smoothly last night after a fresh format of the sd card and most of my apps reinstalled. This morning I put my music back on the card(6 gigs of music). Right after I did that I noticed the phone ran like a slug again.
So my first question is does the amount of data on a SD card slow the access to the swap space?
My second question is, does the Swap space (EXT3) need to be the first partion or the last? Does it make a difference either way?
Ok I lied, I guess I have a "few"questions.
What benifit if any is there to running the swap on a linux-swap partition as opposed to an EXT3? If there is a benifit, how do I tell Swapper to use the linux-swap partition? IE what is its location?
as far as i know the swap file needs to be last
it should be Fat32/EXT2/3
No, the amount of space doesnt matter as long as you have atleast 100mb free on your ext3 partition.
In the swapper settings make sure the location of the swap file is in /system/sd and not in /sdcard

Ok thanks... I have it set to the last partition already. Swapper is set to /system/sd. I have an 8gig class 6 card. I have tested this twice now though. The moment I put my music on my card the system slows down like crazy, the moment I remove said music it speeds back up....
Anyone have any ideas?
Maybe your ext2 (or ext3) or swap partitions are too big. For ext use 500MB - it's enough. For SWAP don't use more than 32MB.

you would have to re-partition your sdcard to include a larger linux-swap partition.
would it be possible for you to give me the code i would type on comsole if i wanted 1gb ext4 and 64 or or of swap?
i have been looking everywhere but i cant seem to find it.
i used 51dustys script for the partioning part nothing on swap in there. it created it for me.
You could use gparted or the partion editor in ubuntu to resize it but it will takes about a half hour to resize and you would have to do it twice since you would also have to resize your ext partion to give you space to extend your swap. It's easier and quicker to just backup and format
ok q. if i go into console and change sd fat32 size to say 2gb. and how would i get ext4 to 1gb everytime i try it reverts back to ext2 i can get ext2 to 1gb but i want ext4. and if i got it like that would the remainder be swap?
You do not need over 500 mb for your ext and anything over 96mb for your swap is quite excessive.
ok i understand that. but with 96mb i would like. its not neccessary for me to have 1gb of ext jst the swap
Either reformat or download either gparted or ubuntu and make a live cd and use either one to resize
thks everyone for info
shold have retraced steps
51dustys script has all i need to complete swap. il try it out monday. also his script will do the format for you from console.
i know you have already found your answer, but i used sdparted to partition my card and it is very simple and easy.
Hi, I have searched but am unable to find guidance on this,
what are the reccomended partition sizes for 1) 8gb and 2) 4gb sd card.
I have at the moment 1gb fat, 2.6gb ext3 and 32mb swap (rough sizes) on a 4gb card, is this the most efficient setup?

500MB ext is plenty
swap should be 32, 64, or 96
Generally 96MB swap is used for Hero and 32 or 64 is used for cupcake/donut.
I personally have 96MB while running CM 4.1.11.1 but I'm not using it anymore because I need to update my user.conf and I'm too lazy to do so. Compcache works just as well and is default on cm builds.
Thanks for the reply, Ill format my other 4gb and make it as you say, 96 swap, 500 ext3 and the rest as fat,

Just bought 2 - Class 6 - 8GB Transcend Micro SD Cards
Wanted to verify some things:
1.If i flash these (with different roms)
can i power off, swap SD cards, and load the other rom on the 2nd SD card?
2. For Running Hero on these , what is recommended for the SD Card partition? i get multiple answers on this reading through the forums, so far seen :
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7500
mkpartfs primary ext2 7500 7948
mkparfs primary linux-swap numbers needed ??
Last line is what i need to know, how much for linux swap? need a solid number : /
Not 100%, and i am not interested in roasting a new card : /
[note i am familiar with flashing etc. running hero on the stock 2gb, just not sure what to do, wanted clarification]
Please help out =]
Appreciated !
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7200
mkpartfs primary ext2 7200 7700
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 7700 7732

Yeah, i seen that, but i'm not running jac's, and i see that he states DO NOT USE MORE THEN 32 MB , but i see this
"recommended setup:
fat32 partition
500mb ext3 partition
128mb of linux-swap partition"
from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575681
So ?

I suggest using a larger swap space with Hero roms. I personally use 96 and it works fine with both Hero roms and Cyanogen's roms.
I'm using CM 7.2 and I finally decide to partition my sd card.
I wanna ask how big I should create those partitions. I have 16gb sd card class 2
fat 32 size?
ext3/4 size?
swap size?
and which order I should create?
thx in advice
You can create them from cwm simply without problems
sdext 1GB
swap 64MB
Order is important?
for example fat32 partition 0, ext3 partition 1 and swap partition 2?

No, go in cwm, advanced, partitions sdcard.
cwm will make all. try to go in cwm so can you see the options
if you want use a different software like minitool partition, you can creat 3 partitions all primary partitions:
1) sdcard in fat32
2) sdext in ext3 or ext4
3) swap
I've partitioned my sd to 512ext but never reach 200mb used..
Sent from public phone using 10cents.
16gb? so big memory for me
Ext 512mb and swap 64mb are enough for apps I thinks that...
Ext4 is better than Ext3, so if you can use gparted live (or minitools) to create the Ext4

hi,
u can keep 512-1 gb as ex3 partition. u can use cwm. its better and simple.
and hey a question? u r having 16 gb ? i tried with 8gb and my phone hanged like anything.. how u managee 16gb ??/
I do nothing to manage 16gb, all works fine. I only set cache sd to 2mb
I have partition my sd with cmw (1024 ext, 64mb swap). now I have 128mb freed in my rom.
thx to all!!!

you re welcome buddy
Read this about how to partition your sd-card
http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-partition-sd-card-and-install.html
Also, Since you have 16 GB sdcard memory, best sizes should be 1-2 GB sd-ext, remaining FAT32, no swap.
