Hello Everyone,
Is there a way to text for free on a g1. I cant afford a texting plan so I need a free alternative for the phone. I know google voice is one but they still haven't started the service for free. Its only by invites. Like on the iphone there is a way but I dont know for g1. Are we charged to use google talk on the g1 with wifi connected? Please let me know.
Thank You
OF COURSE!!!!
Not MANY use it, but I used to before I got GOOGLE VOICE.
its called EMAIL!!! its almost just as quick to receive as a text...
For A List Of Carrier email addresses do a google search or go to the carriers website.
EXAMPLE:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
yup, the only tricky thing about using the email method is you have to know exactly which network all of your contacts are on. it's good because they can still text and reply to you and you can receive it later in email archives.
you can also text through IM apps. put all of your contact numbers in as buddies into a mobile group. then just send texts that way. the downside is, if u are not connected to the IM service you wil not get any texts.
both good alternatives with pros/cons. but free assuming you have wifi or unlimted data.

Yea I used AIM before I used GMAIL and now Google Voice to text mobile lines...Im surprised ALOT of people dont use either (AIM or GMAIL)...
Also if you wanted to send them you can use websites like text4free.com. I don't know how you would recieve em tho.
You know, you COULD just send an email to THEIR EMAIL address rather than to their carrier's email-to-sms address....

Actually you can email to text without them having a smartphone you just have to know who the carrier is and the address.

Question
Why would you want to do that?
If you read what it does you will understand that you can read listen to your voicemail in the order of importance. That is you can select which messages to listen to first instead of listening to 40 messages to get to an urgent one.
It's a feature of the network though, so until it becomes available on your network it won't work regardless of the software.

it is available on the network but only on the iPhone now.
Same Type of service
There is a service I use from "YouMail.com" . This is how it works.
1. Signup for the service. (FREE and No Advertisements)
2. verify the account.
3. Forward all unanswered calls to their Voice Mail number.
( *004*THEVOICEMAILNUMBER*11# on cingular . I purposely removed the number to idiot proof it.)
4. You have the option to get SMS notification or Emails regarding the message and which number it was left from.
5. You also have the ability to personalize voicemail for numbers that you know. For eg. I have a huge list for my personal contacts where I have personal greetings for each person.
6. If a chick annoys you, you can add her number and mark it as DITCH mail. and She will get the message. . I have used this one 2wice already .
7. You can hear the voicemail via the web or via the regular way of dial/hold 1 or Voicemail in cingular phones.
BTW: Not a PPC Application.
.
February 15th I posted this in the Wizard forum (as it's not related to Upgrading) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294272
I used it for a couple of daze until I realized that, even though it's "free", it's using my minutes. So, long story short, I noticed that I had LOTS of calls to a Nevada number.....
Worked pretty good though. It replaced my Cingular voice mail and intercepted all my calls so I got emails notifying me of missed calls and my voice mails came in emails with the phone number in the subject and the voice mail as a wav attachment.
The minutes scared me so I canceled the service....

ifs there a program to block sms on windows mobile? i got call firewall for calls but would like a program for sms. any help is brilliant thank you
Symantec recently released their "Norton Smartphone Security" software that includes mobile anti-virus, mobile firewall, SMS anti-spam, and LiveUpdate. Using the Antispam feature you can create blacklists or whitelists that will effectively block SMS.
Not exactly what you want, but I highly recommend SecretSMS.
Once you input a number that you are getting bothersome SMS from, all SMS from that number will go into the SecretSMS inbox (which can be password protected). The only notification you see on you phone is the screen lights up. Then once in a while clear your Secret SMS inbox
I am using (VERY SUCESFULLY) the Magic Call. It's brilliant.
What I like about it that not only blocks any unwanted SMS, but it can also send an SMS to the person(s) sending those unwanted messages.
It's a life saver.

I realize this is like MONTHS late, but in answer to your questions, Yes and Yes.
I just DL'd and installed this SW yesterday, after trying out several alternatives. This was the only one that worked nice and smoothly on my device.
If you decide to allow callers to leave a voicemail, you WILL get that icon at the top of the screen. But it seems to successfully "eat" the actual notification, so that, for instance, phoneAlarm does NOT sound its alarm for a waiting VoiceMail.
It also deletes the calls from your call history, if that matters to you.
FWIW, I also tried Call Firewall, but didn't like it because 1) when it starts, it shows its GUI screen for a few seconds, even when using the "startup" parameter, 2) blocked calls still rang once on my device before being intercepted, and 3) reportedly it hangs up on calls-in-progress if a blocked caller tries to get through. I need this application to be more secure than this.
In addition, I tried smartblock_ppc22. That one installed nicely, but didn't work at all on my device. I read that it has issues with WM6. Although it installed and ran without any error messages, I could not get it to block calls at all.
Anyway, I know this is late, but maybe it'll help somebody.

These are real show-stoppers for me. I understand that these issues might not affect every Device/ROM combination, but they affect mine, so I needed to opt for a "Paid" alternative. Oh well

Came accross this earlier today, still in its beta stage but definately has the potential to be great. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

PowerSMS [beta]
6 useful text messaging utilities in 1 cool app.
Overview
PowerSMS is a mobile application for people who love text messaging. It enables a number of interesting communication scenarios, which are either cumbersome or impossible without it.
PowerSMS does not replace your phone's built-in text messaging features. Instead, it works with the same folders and messages you already have. It's simple, performs tasks quickly, and gets out of the way. Use PowerSMS to improve communications with your family, friends and colleagues, and they'll wonder how you do it!
Features
•Note to Self: Need to capture a thought or send yourself a reminder? With PowerSMS, there's no fumbling around to type your own phone number or search for a contact.
•Group Message: Texting the same set of people over and over again? PowerSMS lets you create groups of contacts, and drastically reduces the number of clicks required to text them
•Auto Reply: Ever ignore a phone call while you're in a meeting or movie theater? Let PowerSMS respond to those calls automatically with a text message, thus politely letting them know when you'll call back
•Schedule SMS: Schedule greetings or reminders in advance. PowerSMS will automatically send the message even if you forget. Especially appreciated by loved ones
•Cool Stats: Let PowerSMS analyze your messages and tell you interesting things like when and with whom you text the most over a given period. Just for fun or to verify your bill
•Backup & Restore: Switching phones? Just need to get rid of old messages? PowerSMS will help you archive, transfer or export messages to your computer or to another phone
Screenshots
Looks pretty cool... The schedule SMS feature is what got my attention!
Looks great. Will try it but have a couple of questions:-
Does it take away the WM6.1 threaded SMS feature if you install it?
Does it uninstall cleanly and leave the original SMS functionality completely restored?
I had to uninstall it. For whatever reason, if I received a call, with the auto reply SMS feature installed, it would come up and say "problem with WM 6.1 voice command, please restart voice command and try again".
Probably something on my end, but won't have time to track it down until the
weekend.
this is a truly amazing app. ive been looking for something like this for a while. great find!

ans 1....Not it doesnt, it's a standalone program hence doesnt integrate with the WM6.1 messaging system. It has to be launched separately.
ans 2...becos it's a standalone program, it uninstalls cleanly.
This program is awesome, but i have one question that maybe someone can answer.
Does this allow sending to an unlimited number of contacts at once? or does it only send off as many as the PPC can handle?
I have to send text messages throughout the day to several people at once, and if i get to more than twenty something contacts, the text will fail.
Thanks in advance.
nice app... annoying nag when starting.

Time to wake up! Finished dreaming!
somthing thru WiFi but for free
okay... to clear this up...
there are a few ways to send sms for free...
use opera mobile and write your sms on a website that offers free sms sending...
thats it...
there is no software. even is you use wifi on your side, there are costs for your provider as the person you're sending sms to is most likely on a mobile network. if he's also on wifi, you should be using some sort of instant messenger like palringo, fring.
you can also send messages for free using smoke signals, 2 metal tins a long cord....
you can use AIM to send free SMS.
http://mobile.aol.com/aolproducts/aim-for-windows-mobile
just send an IM to +1phonenumber or select Text message from the New message menu.
That's not really polite to nag him. We all add such questions at one moment or an other. When you're new to this world, you sure ask yourself such things .
Thanks for the AIM tip.
Another option is SMS via Email.

thanx man, this is an excellent option...been using this for the last 2 or 3 days, and its great. i actually canceled my unlimited text package and went down to 200 a month. since i only text the same 10 or so people 90% of the time its perfect. saving myself 15 bucks a month, which in this economy is very welcome.

Dawpuc,
I don't know any such application. But, I use this website over wifi on my Tilt.
http://txtdrop.net
I send almost 20 messages everyday. It works great with almost 99% delivery rate. But sometimes they may receive little late(generally 5-10 mins). I heard that the site has some kinda limit on No.of messages, but I haven't experienced anything in this past 4 months.
Good luck !
in my country... the sms are free lol :b

Hi guys! After a loooong time of inactivity I'm back with a new app.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE APP IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN USA AND ITALY ONLY!
MORE COUNTRIES ARE COMING IN THE NEXT WEEKS, ASK FOR A COUNTRY TO GET IT FASTER!
? SMALL SIZE AND NO BATTERY CONSUMPTION!
? NO SPAM, NO ADS!
? EASY TO USE!
Missed calls provides you the "I called you" / "Who called" service without paying your telephone provider. Download it now, it's free for the entire 2018!
Key features:
Receive a notification for each call missed when your phone is busy or unreachable
Find missed calls directly inside the call history of your phone
Block unwanted numbers (call center, etc.) by customizing your blacklist
New! - Activate the service on multiple phone numbers at the same time
Are you a geek and want to know more about how the app works? Keep reading!
Why I can't receive notifications?
Make sure you have a strong network coverage and you are connected to the Internet during the initial setup. Since telephone operators do not allow activating call forwarding with zero balance, always be sure you have remaining credit balance on your SIM, even though it will never be used by our service. If you are experiencing issues with the app, please run the setup again or contact us, we will be more then happy to assist you!
How does the app work?
During the first launch of the app, the user is assisted in the activation of call forwarding to our automatic answering machine, which immediately rejects the call and identifies the calling number. This information is then sent to the device via a push notification. Call forwarding is completely free for both you and the caller!
What about my privacy?
First of all it is important to understand that the system does not store any call. The call history is directly managed by your device, locally on your phone. No personal information is stored in the system. Your telephone number is used to generate a unique, non-invertible code associated with the device; this code will then be used to send notifications to the right user. The code generation is being done directly on the phone with the SHA224 algorithm. In addition, the cloud infrastructure that hosts the system ensures maximum security from any cyber attack.
How do I uninstall the app?
It's very simple! Just select the Uninstall menu item inside the app to disable call forwarding and complete the uninstall; all the data will be automatically removed from both your phone and our systems. And what if you regret it ...?
What will happen after 2018?
We are firmly determined to not include any advertisements within the app to ensure the best possible user experience. In order to bear the costs of the infrastructure and ensure constant improvements, we may have to ask for a small annual contribution, not exceeding 99 euro cents. We are always open to alternative suggestions from the community!
How can I get support, receive information or make suggestions?
If you have any need contact us at [email protected], we will reply as soon as possible!
SO GUYS...PLEASE TELL ME WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT!
