So long story short, I used instant root, modified my hosts file to block some ads, let the OTA donut update install.
Now I'm stuck with my modified hosts file and no root to fix it.
Turns out some of the ads that I blocked, borked a few ad-laden apps.
Any options here besides reflashing? I don't really want to go thru all that just to see some ads again.
Nope, you need su to edit hosts (well you do on linux IIRC, so i presume its the same on the phone)

can i manually update the SU ? i used AndRoot to root my g1 and i was able to "root" it but i noticed that i didn't get SuperUser along with it so i've tried googling several solutions to come up with one where i can download it from the market.
i downloaded from the market and there was an update for it. after pressing okay after a request to update the SU, a toast came up saying it had successfully update it but it didn't update because i could not get permission from my root apps. oddly, i can access root apps but there wasn't a pop up asking for permission..
So in other words everything works just fine? You just want to have the actual application for SuperUser?
You can always try to download the APK and use that instead of your current SU.
I'm unsure if the superuser application is universal, or specific to device, but it's worth a shot.

Hey all,
I have rooted my HTC One. SuperSU works, as well as Titanium Backup, etc.
Some issues...
BusyBox will not install, and AdAware properly alters the hosts file, but after a reboot, AdAware is disabled and the hosts file seems unmodified.
I've also noticed that trying to make some applications "system apps" (sys/app) via Titanium Backup, it seems to work, and applications detect as having system permissions, but after a reboot the apps and permissions are gone.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
The system partition is shadowed, writing to it is temporary. For AdAware the fix is to flash a ROM with a symlinked hosts file, perhaps busybox is similar.

Hmm...
I also noticed this...
I am using a Notification widget called Power Toggles, and one of the buttons is a Shutdown/Restart button. When I click it, and select Shutdown, Restart, Recovery, etc. it fails "because it doesn't have root access." I have given the application root permissions.
What is going on?
since there are no custom roms for the LG Optimus L5 II yet i have decide to write a little tutorial on how to customize your phone.
I am not responsible for bricking your phone!
your divorce because you lost all the family photos!
you getting fired because your alarm didn't go off!
ROOT
First thing to do is root your device
you cant do much unless you have root access so head over to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2343579
and follow the tutorial on rooting your device.
I personaly dont like doing a factory reset so I prefer to use this method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337802
and then following the instructions in the second post.
DEBLOAT
once you have successfully rooted your phone it is time to debloat
removing unessesery apps help to slim down you stock rom and make it faster
after allot of trial and error and allot of soft bricking I came up with a list of apps
safe to remove so that you dont have to.
so first you need to head over to the play store and download root browser or root explorer
this app is going to become your best friend.
grant su for root explorer then
delete the following folder
/system/apps not /system/app
Click to collapse
the navigate to
/data/app/
and delete the following
com.infraware.polarisviewer-1.apk(this is the office program you might want to keep this)
com.lge.filemanager-1.apk
com.lge.safetycare-1.apk
Click to collapse
/system/app/ and delete the following apps
AAT.apk
CBbin.apk
RemoteCallbin.apk
SetupWizard.apk(Not LGSetupWizard_JB.apk)
LGSmartWorld.bin
ChromeWithBrowser.apk
LGHome3_Theme_Biz.apk
LGHome3_Theme_CozyWall.apk
LGHome3_Theme_Marshmallow.apk
Music2.apk
PlusOne.apk
Talk.apk

ADD BLOCK
now that you have removed some bloat its time to block some adds
go to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098
and download the flashable zip
then extract the zip folder and find the hosts file in /system/etc/hosts
use this file to replace the stock hosts file in /system/etc/hosts
thats all I have time for at the moment. I will post more at a later stage.there are still a few other apps that can be deleted but I am still testing them. I am also working on a list of the best replacement apps.
i use "romtoolbox or titanium" apk, to freeze and unisntall some apks. and anywhere,,i just freeze "talk apk" usually, because, i had some problem with playstore if i delete this... not you?
I have not experienced any problems deleting the talk app. What type of problem are you facing?

For ads removal, adaway automatically installs and updates hosts file from online sources.

You can find better sources and add them to adaway to download them. For me it's simpler and faster, that's the only reason I mentioned this app.
In previous versions, when you need a temp unroot to access certain apps for example, you can go to xbin and cut "su" "daemonsu" to other folder, that will make the root function temporarily disabled.
In the new system-less method however, i can no longer find su and daemonsu in xbin, is there any way to temporarily disable root without reflashing anything? Or do i have to roll back to the previous version because it is simply not possible?
Thanks in advance.

Came across this post because I am looking for the same answer - anything new here?
I had my phone rooted and all working fine on Nougat. I then tried installing secure settings for Tasker and since around this time, i've lost root and if i try flashing super su in TWRP, each time i boot and check i'm not rooted. If i open Super Su app it tells me that the framework needs to be updated and to reboot, i do this and it just keeps telling me the same.
The only thing i am thinking may have broken this is i found a guide to get Secure Settings working on nougat where someone suggested creating a folder with root file explorer called 'su' in system/bin. Now when i open up Titanium Backup it tells me it could not acquire root and say the attempt was made using the "/system/bin/su" command which im thinking means it's looking somewhere there is an empty folder?
I cant now of course delete the system/bin/su folder i created as i cant enable root in File Explorer so i'm pretty stuck and not sure what i can do. I've tried the cleanup and full unroot in the supersu app and then flashing supersu in twrp again but still says no root when i check
Any suggestions?

This post was a bit more informative than your "my device unrooted itself" post in the stable thread.
Dirty flash your system or use the file manager in TWRP to remove the offending folder.
I was thinking of trying that but fixed it a different way as I just posted in the SuperSU thread. But in case anyone else ever has this problem...
I fixed my issue. By disabling SuperSU and enabling again from the app settings and it gave me root. I then deleted a created su folder in system/bin that I manually created earlier when trying to get secure settings working.
