Looking for fast (read/write) 16gb USB flash drive - Off-topic

As the title states
I used to have an A-data PD7 8gb, that thing was rude fast dam lost it though . I replaced it with an A-data S805 8gb, was nowhere near as fast but was okay but my girlfriend wanted it, so I gave it to her and bought myself the 16gb version of it. But the 16gb version is even worse than the 8gb version, when near full capacity the drive write performance is shockingly bad and i think the read performance is erratic at best.
So I'm looking for a good 16gb (or even 32gb) fast read/write drive, have had a look at a few reviews but they're no substitute for real world tests, so I want to here about what drives you lot have and if they're any good.
Oh if I could find a 16gb PD7, I'd buy it lol.
I want something that performs like this: (My really old A-data PD7 4gb - the 8gb performed roughly the same)

I am using an USB flash drive of Sandisk and I am satisfied. There are some more in the market like OCZ and Corsair. Both have drives of 16GB capacity though they each look very different. Corsair went with the more standard approach of a normal looking flash drive. OCZ on the other hand went with a tapered credit cards style drive that is intended to fit into your wallet.

kingston are also ok

Anyone got any data to backup their opinions?
You can get bench mark app here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/ATTO-Disk-Benchmark-v2.41-download-2343.html it is freeware
Have been looking at Super Talent Luxio but online reviews seem inconsistent though.
Would love to get Buffalo Type R 16gb (http://www.buffalo-technology.com/p...es/ruf2-rs-super-high-speed-usb-flash-type-r/) but they are far too expensive and by all accounts quite a big bulky USB drive.
The new esata/usb (http://www.ritek.com/p2-pro4-eSATASSD.asp) devices look quite good but they are still in their infancy and a little to big to put on my keys

What Memory should I use on Kaiser?

Hi guys, I am trying to buy a "SanDisk Mobile Premier 2GB Micro SD high speed", I believe it is fit for Kaiser, right?
Yep that'll work fine; be wary of buying on eBay as many tend to be fakes. Buy from a trusted reseller. I have got a 6GB for less than £40 delivered.
If your in the US, you can get great deals @ newegg.com
I purchased my 2gb microsd for 19.99, and 3 day ups is standard shipping.(costs like 3-5 dollars, on some cases its free shipping)
it supports cards over 2GB (Micro SDHC); i have a 2GB Micro SD for now, waiting for a 10-15GB model of the SDHC's to come out so i can dump all my music on it and ditch my iPod
dunno where ive got this from but i think/heard/got the vibe that the kaiser can only support up to 8gb sdhc?
that's great, I was think about a 2GB one but seems like it is not enough? Does Kaiser a good music/video player?

i get maybe 45 minutes out of a charge on the iPod anymore; it will permanently reside in my car soon enough. Dont get me wrong, the iPod is great and all, but pocket space is at a premium for me, and between wallet, cell/PPC, keys, iPod, ciggs, lighter, and PassCards my pockets are stuffed. If 8GB is the most the Kaiser will support, then so be it.

Yes we all need a slim pocket...
By the way here comes a new question, I found that all micro SDHC are come with CLASS 2, that means 9mb/s on reading and 5mb/s on writing... a little bit slow? It that necessay to buy a MicroSD Ultra II ?

up to 32 GB sd card in ATT Tilt

if you have a 1-2GB micro SD card now, i'd wait a while unless your dying for memory space; they are bound to up the read/write speeds and lower the prices. I teach digital photography, a few years back read/write speeds of memory cards mattered a LOT, nowadays most D-SLR's have a huge cache so a superfast memory card isnt such a big deal, and the prices are fairly decent. My bet is in 6 months an 8 gig Ultra II Micro SDHC shouldnt be more than $60.
thats great to hear RacerX10; even 10-15GB should effectively mean i dont need to drag my laptop and iPod everywhere; 32GB means pretty much ALL my media with me.
SDHC spec is up to 32gig, today the max you can actually buy is 6gig. By the time you can actually buy a 32gig, we'll be using different phones like TyTN III

6GB Micro SDHCs are available - Sandisk seems to be th eonly real supplier at this moment. I'm sure others will have theirs out soon too. I just bought one from www.mydigitaldiscount.com in the US. Got it with no issues, and I've filled 4.5GB of it with music and video.
8GB MicroSDHCs are targeted for release probably around the end of the year. Again, Sandisk will be the first supplier.
No one has even announced an official "coming soon" statement for anything bigger than 8GB yet.

Kaiser is a real good video player(Using TCPMP), but it also depends on the format.
My favorite, and In my opinion, the best format is .m4v (You may need a special convertor for that)
Other formats are either 2 big, or has really choppy playback.
Also you should increase your font and glyph cache to 32768 (makes things more responsive/ smoother)
the SDA SD Card Association has never quite said the 'maximum' size of a Micro SD; there is a theoretical maximum of 32 GB, hence the 'limit' at the moment, which IMO means merely a new 'type' of SD card in a year or two. as for hardware that reads them, there likely is a maximum size they can read.
Currently Samsung has an 8GB Micro SD in development, Kingston and Sandisk are sure to be right behind anyways. besides, its just a memory card; i have piles of 128MB Memory Stick Pro Duo's that i bought for my Sony S710a when it first came out, and 128MB was still a fairly sizeable card for a cell phone; now we're talking 6-8+ gigs...

[Q] Micro SDHC Upgrade

Morning XDA,
Just had a quick question about your opinions on micro SDHC cards.
The 2GB that Sprint gave me is quickly filling up, and so I'm deciding to go up to an 8GB
Any cards (type/model) you recommend and which ones cause any problems?

I'm not too sure about the 8GB cards but I bought a 16GB Class 10 SDHC card from Newegg.com for pretty cheap ($35.99).

It performs great and I haven't had a single problem with it. I also notice that my HD videos that are recorded aren't as choppy.
I have the exact same card and I definitely recommend it. Also did some speed tests on it and its definitely a class 10

Well I'm on a budget (under $20) and looking at just 8GB Class 4 or 6
This is mostly just to upgrade storage space

There was a 16GB Class 10 from Wintec on New Egg for $24 and change. If you're going to spend $20 go a few more. The class makes a difference and you will notice it.

Oh nice. Yeah I've been looking around Newegg but have been basing judgement on reviews. I'll definitely look into that one.
Backups take up most of my space.
I got this 8 gig. class 6 card on Amazon for about 17 bucks (I was able to bundle it with something else to get free shipping). I find it's just fine for holding some music and app files. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0026L7DG0

In my best buy in atl we just recently got class 10 micro 8gb for 25. It's a sale price but sometimes they last a while.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
For you guys who upgraded.....
Are the cards formatted out of the box, and "plug-n-play", or do they require additional steps before being read by the phone? I purchased (against my better judgement) a Sandisk 8GB Class 4 card last week, and the phone didn't even recognize the new card. Currently running CM7, so I though the ROM may be the issue, but I nandroided back to Stock, and the card wasn't recognized on that one either. So I just took it back (the card).
I'd like to upgrade, since yes, the backups do take a substantial amount of space, but I'd rather get a card that I can just plug in and go.

If you're talking about the PNY card, the Best Buy website is showing this as a new item in my local store for $29.99 ($49.99 for 16gb). I'm going to run over there after work and see if they're on sale.
Here is the card I got for me and my wife's Shift. They have been reliable.

$16.99 with free shipping. 8GB Class 6 card. Great reviews.
Edit - LOL I see you have already looked at this card...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211518
seems to be out of stock right now, but I was scared to try it after the reviews I read. But definitely works good. There's a flashable zip somewhere to change the SD cache or something and it worked out pretty well
This is a little off topic from my original question, but it's still accessories related
I honestly don't like the charger that came with this phone; juts out of the wall to far and I don't like how it's two parts. I'll definitely keep the cable for computer connectivity though.
I was browsing Amazon and I've seen a couple flat retractable prong ones and I can never seem to find cord length. Plus compatibility issues in terms of voltage output
Need a one piece charge, with a nice lengthy cord, and compact prong style
Any recommendations?
pretty much any micro USB cable will charge the phone. As for charger, I've been using AC chargers for ipod touch and all of them worked with the phone. From my experience, HTC phones tend to be not very picky when it comes to chargers.
Sandisk has never failed me Transcend has.

Not bad for the cost but I'm always hesitant after reading reviews especially if other Android users rated it 1/5 with reason
No Android users rated it 1/5. The 1/5 were for people who never received their rebate, and Linux users.

32gb class 2 vs class 4

Hey guys,
I'm interested in getting a 32gb card. I will be watching movies off it and just basically reading books. Is there a huge diff between the two? I googled and I found the diff write and read speeds but my question is how relevant is it to the user? Like will the movies be choppier or books open slower? etc

Sadly, to throw a wrench in your question, there is authority behind the class markings. Basically, there is nothing stoping makers for marking a card Class 10, even when it can barely do 1MB/s writes. So, how does that answer your question?
It comes down to brand. Sandisk by far makes the best microSD cards, which almost always outperform their rating. I have an 8Gb Class 2, that constantly benches at 5MB/s sustained write, and 12MB/s sustained read. I also have an 8GB Kingston clas4, that can barely hold 2MB/s write, if it is lucky. The other issue few talk about is random reads, where again, the Sandisk is much faster (and random reads are not part of the class specifications)..
So, if you get a decent brand (again, Sandisk), a class 2 should be suitable for all music, and most movies. If you can afford it, class 4 will give you wiggle room.
How about adata? Have you had any experience with them?

personal experience no, but i haven't heard alot bad (actually, better than Kingston in many cases). I know they have decent prices on their cards.
With what i was saying before, it is fair to mention that while slow, my Kingston does still work. But saving things to it was painful, and so i avoid its use. Even if you don't get the fastest card, i think the biggest pain will be filling it once.. after that, using it should be ok..
I see. What about the performance? Saving stuff to it isnt much of an issue to me I think. Im more concerned on the performance. Like running movies off it and launching programs etc the sandisk sounds awesome but the price is much higher
For the use you are planning(movies) the big factor will be sequential read speeds. The class system is too easy for the manufacturers to game. Check the specs for the card you are looking at...if they don't tell you, it's likely because they suck. Sandisk class 2 cards are, as stated, usually better than the class 2 they are rated.
so you guys would recommend a class 2 32gb sandisk over a class 4 adata card of the same size yeah?
Can't really say one way or the other. From reading reviews at Newegg...seems like Adata tech support might be a bit iffy...then again those reviews are usually posted by those who have issues or feel like they have to defend their purchase(ie...fanboi's).
One thing I can see for myself...Adata is the only manufacturer on Newegg to actually list their full specs. Even on the manufacturers pages...only Adata has manned up and posted specs. otherwise they all just fall back on the SDHC specifications for class...which as stated can be gamed a bit.
At the end of it all..it's your cash...spend it the way you feel like...do some research for yourself first.
I have a scandisk class 4 32GB and it is way slower then a smaller class 6 that I have. For me, I don't think I could stomach anything slower then the class 4 for large files.

Sandisk is great. I was originally running Nookie Froyo from a class 2 Sandisk. It was actually pretty solid. I moved up to a Transcend class 6 and it's been good too. Both seem to perform well over their class specification when I'm transferring files and have been very stable.
On the other hand, my friend has a Kingston class 10 which seems pretty buggy. A lot of force close errors, looping boots, etc. Though these could just be a coincidence. Haven't seen him transfer any files though, so I can't judge the speed.
SD Cards..
You should be aware that Sandisk, Adata and others do not actually manufacture flash memory chips, they mostly package and test it - the big boys in the game are Intel, Samsung, Toshiba and Hynix. Depending on where or from whom Sandisk buys the basic chip the specs may be different.

Actually there is a requirement if you're in the SD Association. But in reality anyone can stamp a C10 on a card, especially no-name brands.

Absolutely. AData are junk in my experience.
Kingston and SanDisc are the only ones that are reliable for all devices that I've owned. Others are hit and miss, PARTICULARLY Patriot. I've had 3 Patriot cards that were JUNK in most devices. I had two Patriot SD cards for a camera that were fine but couldn't work right in anything else, and I (stupidly) purchased an 8G uSD card a few years ago for a phone and it was junk there, and I've periodically tried it in new devices for giggles and it's been junk in every single one.
I'll bet a SanDisc C4 out classes any other brand C10 in device like a phone or tablet.
Side note: All 3 Patriot's work just fine on my computer. I did tests particuarlly on the 8G uSD over and over and over and it was fast and reliable in my card reader. Every device locks up or goes slow as hell if it's in 'em. My guess is that they didn't follow specs closely.
So a Sandisk Class 4, 8GB would be a good pick?

I recently bought this on and have found it to be an excellent performer. Loading/watching mp4 movies. The 30 day return window is pretty generous.

SD cards are a complicated topic... not to throw another wrench into the system but you also want to be careful WHERE you buy your card. SanDisk counterfeiting is RAMPANT since a vendor can take a blank card, less than a pennies worth of ink and then charge you some percentage of the SanDisk price while still reaping a huge profit. As unfortunate as it is, real SanDisk cards always seem to just work while the other cheaper cards can be hit or miss. Honestly though the only real problem with off brand cards and the NC I have had is that they don't always boot so good. So I use my SanDisk 8GB C2 (bought from Costco) to boot and my Patriot 16GB C10 to watch movies and store stuff. Buying from Retail, Newegg, or Amazon (Amazon itself, not a sold through vendor on Amazon) should help make sure whatever you buy is the real thing. Good Luck!

[Q] Any Recommendations for Best microSD for Webtop2sd use?

Any Recommendations for Best microSD for webtop2sd use?
I am getting ready to try out webtop2sd on my Bionic but I want to buy a 32Gb microsd card. I was about to get a class 10 but I have been ready there may be some problems with them in the phone. (?poor random access times vs. sequential transfer speeds?)
So, I am not sure whether to go with class 10, 6 or if just a Sandisk class 4 would be best. (I don't really want to spend a huge amount of money either - looking for best performance for a reasonable price)
If anyone has experience using webtop2sd, or is extremely knowledgeable about microSD media, and could recommend the best microSD card to use I would appreciate it. Thanks!
Have you considered just using a flash drive for additional storage? It seems like it would be a cheaper way to go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1273852 Here's another thread that is talking about SD cards.
Basically if you go with a 32gb Class 10 Micro SD you will have the fastest transfer rates you can get. They are about i think 3 times as much as the class 4. The class 4's work fine though. I haven't really done or seen any bench marking for the Bionic about it. That is what I am planning to get though for webtop2sd for myself.
http://goo.gl/sEGLC
I figure if I am going to be using it as a a full ubuntu basically, would be nice for the extra transfer/read speeds. /shrug
less then 30 bucks for this one....

Im using one of these from a previous daily sale from the same site and it works great for everything. Webtop2sd included. And you can't beat the price!!
class 10 all the way. you will not be dissapointed. the read and write speeds are awesome. i will never use anything but a class 10 unless they come out with a faster one. the are a little pricy but well worth it
I saw somewhere that the bionic is compatible with sdxc cards which are class 30 and up to 64gb. Hellaciously expensive though. Might be worth looking into though.
I'm a bit curious about that, if you find anything out definitively shoot me a message.
I used a class 4 at first, ran AnTuTu and saw other people's droid's beating mine. Switched to a class 10 and I'm holding the top score right now by 5 points (5171, closest 5166), lol, not much but good. It was a big improvement over the class 4. With a class 4 card it was scoring in the high 4000's. The read/write speed is a huge leap, you'll notice if you do any full memory card backups / transfer a lot of music / files to the Droid.
I say look for a deal, I used 2 reward zone coupons at Best Buy to make it free for me.
You can usually find really good deals online or MicroCenter has good prices in store if you don't shop online.

Hmmm, Im using the 32gb sd card from my Thunderbolt, and I got a score of 5120. write speed of 8.4mb/sec and read of 15.5.
is there any difference in the brands? Im always leery of brands of have never heard of, and am thinking about spending more for the sandisk or kingston.
I have been using a Samsung 32Gb Class 10 card for about a month and it works great. Speeds are fantastic. Picked it up at Fry's for $50. I have not used Webtop2sd however.
You should check it out. A full linux distro running on your bionic is pretty impressive.
+1 for class 10, you cant go back once you've seen your card reader hit 17Mbps write speed. i dont even MIND doing superfluous nandroids anymore lol.

Worried about space? Possible solution...

This is only for people who actually open to ideas, not for people who just want to ***** and moan.
I wanna buy the 8GB, for every day use it will be perfect for me, but for the odd case where I go on a long plane journey and don't want to take my tablet, I wondered if there is solution...and then I realised there was, and it's ultra compact.
USB on the Go is the saviour here. Pair this adapter with this tiny USB stick and you suddenly have 32GB extra space.
If your feeling more adventurous, you could go down this DIY route too, very cool and I might be trying this myself
But how is this implemented on the software side? Does stock android support this?
sure, usb host ist what you need

This is only for people who actually open to ideas, not for people who just want to ***** and moan.
I wanna buy the 8GB, for every day use it will be perfect for me, but for the odd case where I go on a long plane journey and don't want to take my tablet, I wondered if there is solution...and then I realised there was, and it's ultra compact.
USB on the Go is the saviour here. Pair this adapter with this tiny USB stick and you suddenly have 32GB extra space.
If your feeling more adventurous, you could go down this DIY route too, very cool and I might be trying this myself

Yeap that's possible, but absent of miniSD card is a big deal breaker for me considering this is just only 8GB - and there's a nice article at http://www.androidpolice.com, why this is so cheap considering this is unlocked phone. It sounds like Google did sacrifice some specs make the cost down and more affordable.
I have Samsung Galaxy S III with 16GB, and plust 32GB sd card, I am already running out space since I save a lot of musics, and games on my sd card and since we all carry the phone with us (not like 10 inch tablet), it makes better sense to have bigger space on your phone.
so really 8GB quite deal breaker.
Don't think that I am *****ing and moanning about it, Nexus 4 specs quite amazing and looks premium quality, and what you said about USB stick would work just fine, but just wanted to share my 5 cent opinion here.
I think that this could work. Im also looking to buy the 8gb flavor.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone will be happy with 8GB, I just didn't want people coming in here just to moan. It's down to cost, and if you need more space, that's cool.
16GB is enough for me, and if I need more space I'll use dropbox/google drive
Of course I would prefer microSD slot, but... I guess for 350$ which includes S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, 2100mAh battery, two cameras and its a nexus, we can't complain about anything!!

Yeah, the lack of storage and no sd card for me is also a deal breaker. It's such a shame because I'm really excited about the device. The price here in the UK is so low for what appears to be a high end device, it's amazing. In fact, I've never felt so conflicted about a device. I really want it, but I know it won't hit the mark, purely for lack of storage. With games like NOVA 3 taking up 3GB, plus my sat nav requiring almost 2GB, there won't be much space for other stuff. Data coverage where I live is pretty hit and miss so streaming media from the cloud still isn't a viable alternative for me yet which is a shame. Perhaps it will at least help to drive down the price of other handsets that have high end SoC?
I think the OP's suggestion is a very good one. This approach works well most of the time on a Galaxy Note, as long as it's just a flash drive or micro SD card that the phone can successfully power. I wonder if there would be a way to toggle something like 'directory bind' on and off so that you could put music/media/data files for games on a micro sd card, then just plug it in when you need, change the path of the internal SD card to the external one, then fire up a game. That would be a reasonable compromise from my perspective.
Such a shame, it's so cheap
I don't understand the people who want to buy the 8gb version. Its only a little bit more for the 16gb version.
.. and don't say its because you can't afford it.. because if this phone was the same price range as the galaxy nexus or any other high end smart phone you would still buy it.
Just pay that little bit extra and get double the space.
I have a USB-OTG cable and a USB microSD card reader so I would just buy another 16GB/32GB card and carry that around with me. It is easy to take out and plug in and easy to put away when not needed.
Hey guy's. My Girlfriend got a Galaxy Nexus and YES USB-OTG is part of the Chipset Configuration the GN comes with! The Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 Chipset supports OTG as well. In the pure Android-Roms the Nexus Devices are running the Firmware supports OTG by default. As I know it's included in the kernel... so no need to create a problem!!!
buy a OTG Adapter - 1,99€ on Amaz...
buy a USB Stick 32Gb. - 12,00€ even on Amaz..
buy a LG NEXUS 4 16GB - 349,00€
= 362,99€ complete!
so if you compare this the other "leading devices" you save up to 200€!!! so you see, no need to spend tears and cry.... Start smiling cause you got a few buck's left to buy some Christmas presents for the family!
I use Google Music and sync my photos to my 50GB dropbox account (thank you Samsung!). 16GB is more than I ever need. The only time I get close to using that much is if I'm dual booting 2 different roms.
I do this with my Nexus 7 and plan to continue doing it with the Nexus 4! Really useful when I want to stick a film or tv show on there and watch on the go.

Yes this would work. I personally have done it with my Gnexus and nexus 7. However, you have to be very careful with that thing sticking out of your phone. It could be very easy to knock the phone over or drop it or something and I would be concerned about hurting the stuff inside the phone.
good alternative... currently have the 16GB NS4G and was really excited when i saw the tweet about the N4 and N10 today... disappointed by no Verizon/Sprint compatibility tho... this definitely would've been my next phone if i could use it on these networks...
question about his alternative tho... is 32GB the limit it can read or can you go up to something like 64GB storage as well??

There's no limitation. You could plug in a 3TB external hard drive if you wanted.

lol no... but i have my hard drive b/c i'm using it to transfer files between people... i mostly just stream Pandora and don't play many games... the space isn't the issue for me really on this device... no cdma is ... but it's great to know there's essentially no limit to the sd/usb car we can add to this!
Why do you need so much space? I'm using an Xperia S right now, with 32GB and I've got over half of it free. 18GB free to be precise, but I haven't been deleting photos and such that I don't need, so they're at 1.3GB.
