Is there such thing as luck here, I think it's either it is possible or not, if it happened then we may want to investigate a little bit more for the benefit of others.
I have just received a full version of Win 7 ultimate (as Win 7 Party host) and currently installing on shift, will report back.

You are right, there is no such thing as luck on techy stuff. It is either possible or not. But there are sooo many things that people can do differently when they install software and things can conflict with each other that "it seems" one needs luck not to get down a wrong alley. i myself installed Win7 Professional, official version, and for three days I thought the black screen would not happen to me...until it did and my only way was not to have aero active. And there is no way of telling without auditing every setting, every application installed to identify what makes it happen. That is what, in a way I call luck. Luck in what you choose to install or not to. Once it happens, we can never be sure it will not happen again.

very interesting. do you still have the touch possebilitys?
(with beta you must decide: 1024aero or 1024without aero but with touch)
@wovens: you are right, but in this special case we talking about a plain fresh installed W7 without special software dependencies

I'm getting a shift, tomorrow.

This is probably one of over a hundred "getting a shift" posts, but I'm just so damn excited. I know I'm a little late to the party, as well. But hey, better late than never.
I'm looking forward to joining some of the conversations and threads on this part of the forum. I've spent most of my time on xda in the athena and touch hd forums. (Athena was stolen, touch hd is still going strong).
Anyway... yeah.... YES!!!! (elbow thrust motion of excitement).

lol welcome to the party mate !!!
Congrats !
Did you decide to buy an as SD access is close and GSM + GPS is working ?
Will you develop for this device ? Sorry to hear your gadget got stolen, maybe install pocketreperion for free and have it send location and audio to your phone !
Welcome on board mate.I'm also new - I got mine about 2 weeks ago.
So far so good. Some problems with USB tool after SP1 install.
Haven't flashed a rom yet, I'm waiting for saiweb to make the next miracle with SD.
Can't wait to have (almost) all in one pack (GPS,phone,SD).
Blue,Wifi,FullScreen WM - for those I can wait.
Also thinking about Windows 7, haven't decided yet.
Anyway, in my opinion, "factory" shift is a decent machine. After xda developers work it's now good. In the near (I hope) future it will be just great.

Nope, I'm not a developer, although some of my students are. Thanks for all the greetings, and uh... I don't understand the last comment. I'm an English speaker.
About the loss of my athena, well... There's always an answer in retrospect, but that was then, and this is now. I've moved on, and still the world is full of fortune and misfortune, but it's all for a reason.

Congratulations. Sorry to hear the loss of the device. I can understand the frustration that you go through when a device is lost or broken. It is like losing a hand all of a sudden.
I am still working on BT and SD access. Got lost at day work.

Got it.
Well, I got myself the shift. It's at home right now downloading the English MUI. I'm living in China as an English teacher, so everything I buy here is in Chinese. Oh well, I'll get it done.
I'm most interested in getting win7 on here as well as trying to run World of Warcraft to see if it's even playable at the lowest settings.
Fingers crossed, and we'll see.
Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Let me know how WoW works out for you
Hey
I ran wow on it, it runs slowly on low, but certainly playable. It was actually kinda fun. I'm curious to see how it will run in win7 rc 7100 but I've yet to find a key for it to install it.
Any information on how to get a key for the win 7 7100 RC would be excellent, and I'll give updated impressions of WOW after that.
Caid.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx
Download the RC from here, log in with a Windows Live account and they give you a key.
"
You don't need to rush to get the RC. The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time.
Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010."
Windows 7 = perfection

I can vouch for Windows 7. It makes the Shift darn near perfect to work on. Fast, gorgeous, and slim. Just make sure you follow the guide on these forums EXACTLY when you do install it else the TouchScreen and Control Center won't work. Also, you'll have to be careful not to bump the resolution change button, else you'll BSOD. Other than that its great!
hey, you can run win7 in a higher resolution, just make sure to select a non aero theme in your display settings.

Indeed, but it still remains that if you're in Aero and you bump that button, bad things happen.
Nonetheless, great experience.
Congrats on your new toy - where did you get one of these babies in China?
I'm living in Shanghai but haven't seen one here at all! I was really hanging out for a Touch Pro2 to go with my Redfly, but a Shift would be awesome!

Windows 7 (Solution for turning off every 2 hour found!!)

Hello all,
As you know all windows 7 has expired today and many of you including me have faced the prob of turn off every 2 hour. And the thing that makes worst of this situation is it dont gives warning and also doesnt saves data!! But no more worries there is simple trick which can solve this prob even a kid can do this. Its really that simple see ur self http://www.techit.in/use-windows-7-rc-for-one-more-month/.
Hope you don't mind me pointing out that, even though it is a good trick, what happens if you want to install the security updates? It checks if your clock matches theirs.
Unless you are happy with a stale system that will never improve ...
Or... Get the RTM, Seems more like a logical solution to me or am I being too simple?

You're absolutely right. The turning off is for RC versions.
As XDA recommends, buy Windows 7.

That's why I've got mine a while back. I think it's worth buying. I was only pointing out some of the pitfalls of not going legal.
Yes you all are right but this trick is for people just in case they want to run windows 7 and dont want to buy it right now. You can imagine how much pain is that for anyone turning off in every two hour that without saving By the way you totally cant say its illegal coz we are just using a trick - am i wrong? please correct me if so.
Windows 7 build 6519 Milestone 1
Bit random but anyway, I got build 6519 working in sun virtualbox. Changed the date back on the host to nov 2007.

Yep you would either need another harddrive or to partition your harddrive or to run in a VM
i was just gonna make another partition, and if i do, and it installs, will it automatically ask me which to boot from when i power it on?
Why not Ubuntu just out of curiosity. Don't want to start a flame war

i personally chose ubuntu, lol, how big would you say i need the partition to be?

Oh okay. If you try something "exotic" let us know your feedback!! I am going to do a reinstall on my computer soon and was thinking of switching away from Ubuntu just for the sake of trying something new so I'd like to hear some objective reviews.
Have you thought about "rolling your own"?

Sorry I meant you can make your own. There's a site dedicated to it but you might not want to do that just yet. Have you looked at OpenSuse? Haven't used it in a while but it was good. I tried the KDE version of Federa a month or two ago. A bit buggy! Mint Linux has had some good reviews anyway just my input!

Personally it's only the GUI I want to have some variety in so I'm trying out "Xubuntu" which I think is Ubuntu with XDE desktop-thing-which-I-don't-remember-what's-called-thing xD I did read about openSUSE but it was too much like Ubuntu I think
For a complete noob, Ubuntu is the way to go. It'll get you started pretty quick and the interface is just a matter of choice. If you want something that's uberHaxX0rZ, try installing a tiling Window Manager such as awesome instead of Gnome (which is default in Ubuntu).
I myself use Arch Linux with gnome-panel and Compiz as a standalone Window Manager and I'm loving it!
I myself am an Ubuntu man. I'm currently digging the Ubuntu 10.10 beta. 2 weeks until the final release!
I myself is trying to use the default window manager in Kubuntu but I can't get it working It's driving me crazy :/ It just says that non of the effects could be enabled...

This usually happens because the drivers for your graphics card aren't installed properly (or the card is ancient).
This is exactly one of the things why I personally dislike Ubuntu. If you're lucky, it'll work like a charm, but if you're not, you're gonna spend hours and hours trying to get it to work.
Either way, you can probably fix it by downloading and installing proprietary drivers for your card, since the open source ones probably don't work with your card. Though on the other hand, maybe you need to use opensource ones because the proprietary ones that installed automatically don't work? Who knows?

(req) help installing ubuntu on windows 7 primium 64bit (solved)

hey i was wondering if someone would help me install ubuntu on my win7 hp laptop now i tried this erlier via the usb method but i almost killed my computer my computer restarted and i got a black screen of death and i went into recovery and it hung on automatic system repair for about 40min and i was about 2min away from doing a full wipe on my computer and starting over luckily it finished and my computer restarted and all is good now. so now im ready for round 2 however i would really like some outside help before i try and tackle this again blindly lol.
so would someone please pm me and ill send u my gtalk info.
thx in advance.
I would imagine ubuntu hasn't changed all that much since I last tried the distro. Plus editing partitions is almost universally the same so I'll help you one of these nights (Mon- Wed) if you don't get help from someone else before hand.
Edit: actually I'm back in my town again, so tonight could possibly work out as well depending on when you're free. (I'm free between ~7-10pm CST then I have some things to take care of)

Walk away man... you almost bricked your hero and with the help of xda members you got it back up. Be grateful. This is the general section. Plus its linux. Which is what you have in your hand. In turn which is a hero... which has....linux.... so yes it has to do with the hero....
Enough sarcasm?
®patience is a virtue©
Good to hear that you got it installed.
JFYI - Ubuntu has an option where it can be installed as a directory within Windows. I have not used that option, but it did come up when I installed it, last time.
yea ubuntu is pretty sweet kind of buggy though im glad i only did a 20gig partition lol

M8 Windows?

That story popped up on my BlinkFeed. It will become real news if Sprint every gets their hands on it.
Hopefully there is an m8 max
Popped up on mine also. I haven't used a window phone since the T-Mobile shadow.

I've become really interested in Windows since 8. This would cool in my opinion.

I really hope someone can dual boot the M8 between the Android and Windows.. That would be great for Windows phone operating system in general. People will get to try them and realize that they aren't that bad at all (as compared to what they used to be).

I love Android and Windows Phone. I have found that as Windows machines get smaller (My Dell venue pro 8, for instance), they are making my phone more of a messaging and talking device again. It's funny how this works. I'd love to get in on the WP action.
Unless they announce a WebOS option... we can dream, right?

I would love to see what WebOS would be like on a device like this. My first smartphone was a Palm Pixi, and the interface was wonderful. It got really slow with time, and full data wipes didn't help anymore.
But that's just wishful thinking.
Back on topic, tho. Can anyone weigh in and comment on how likely it is that we'll be able to install the version of Windows Phone that was just released on our Sprint/Android versions?

not really a leak....it's official...http://blog.htc.com/2014/08/htc-one-m8-for-windows/
exclusive for Verizon....not interested....Android FTW!
No, I'm not converting to WM either, even if it was to come to Sprint. However, I have never even seen WM live in person, and I wouldn't mind giving the Rom a flash.
Same here. I wouldn't buy it but if there was a port for Android m8 I would definitely flash the rom
I've suggested to HTC to make a dual boot for their top phone. So that, no matter which you buy, you can switch as you like. I guess it's gonna benefit MS more than HTC,but it could be a nice push for sale of the phone because it's just another unique feature that nobody really bothered to do.
I've used the WP 7 for a long time and like that very well. Since now the M8 takes SD card, the storage space is less a concern, so makes this even more workable.
IMO the best will be dual boot, so that you can choose on bootup, the second will be a flash, which would be harder to change. But either way, it'll be very neat.
Was just thinking the exact same thing
I've seen the buzz lately about the m8 Windows version, and when it finally clicked that they both had the same hardware I started digging around to see if I could find info on a possible port.
I did find this YouTube video, posted today, but the poster didn't give much information, only a link to what appears to be a ROM file https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_FHG7Uq3a8
Maybe someone more experienced than myself could look into the .zip to see what's going on in there or maybe help me find out where it came from - I'm sure this link didn't pop up from nowhere if it is truly legit.

Yeah, I checked it out and downloaded then ran it through an online virus scan, I don't trust it.
The video I posted before had a link to an 800mb file or so
