I've had my G1 for about 1 year now... about 1 month ago it just stopped working. WHEN I TURN IT ON I GET AN ERROR IMAGE (its an exclamation point inside a triangle with a g1 phone right under it)
What the heck does it mean?
The phone is pretty much useless, cant do anything to it.
I've taken out the battery put it back in and nothing....still get that image.
I have no idea what to do.
Can anyone Help me???

see if you can get into bootloader with camera and power.
Have you been running a cooked ROM or a stock ota release?
OTA. Anything I got on the phone i got through the market place or from t-mobiles updates and stuff. i really dont know anything about "cooked roms"....
Didn't Work

Sounds like a brick.....RIP lmvcorp's G1
I need a new screen for my spare G1 and would be willing to take it off your hands......
don't give up on it just yet, i remember reading about this somewhere and someone getting this fixed on a rooted phone, i don't now bout stock but let me look
I agree that its better not to give up, but with an unrooted phone, it seems unlikely that there is a fix. Root gives so many more options in the way of workarounds. Without those workarounds, it will be a miracle to get a somewhere on a phone that can't get into the bootloader. Would it be worth running a logcat and posting it? I can't remember if ddms will recognize a device that is on that screen or not.
Grid, any thoughts on that?
i am trying to look up the info, the screen means kernel or rom corruption, can prob still be adp push. i keep getting distracted and i am not used to being up this long
to the op, try sliding out your keyboard when on that screen and press alt + and w and report back if it does anything
i knew i knew this, duh. you are stuck on the stock recovery, try what i said then, pull the battery and reinsert it and power the phone back up by holding the camera and power buttons if you get into the tri color screen, report back and everbody here can tell you what to do next
you could put DREAIMG.NBH in the root of your sd card, camera+power and run update and go through the rooting process..Many tutorials all over the web

OK. I did what you said. I press ALT + W and nothing happened so i pushed it a couple of time and another screen came up... it wasnt the the tri color screen. I got a screen with a "box, an arrow coming out of it....with the phone outside and a loading bar at the bottom" I'm assuming this is like a un-boxing process. but right after that the phone just restarts and the process starts all over again.... G1 screen, then the error screen. I've also tried to press CAM+POWER after that in so many ways and nothing..... taken the battery off and nothing. tried so many combinations.....
(sorry it took me a while to report back, i was on vacation, then i caught the flu.)

If you cant get to the tricolor screen then DREAIMG.nbh wont help
You should take it to the store and tell them it happened after the update.

HELP PLZ
Ok. I've searched and searched... and I still don't know what to do. I found a method on trying a "master reset" but after it re-boots its still stuck in the "triangle, exclamation, phone" screen. Attached are photos of how the screen looks like after every step. I think the problem is that the software is damaged and that it cant be loaded correctly. Is there anything I can download into the SD CARD and load to "alt+s"???

So I was using my G1 today, (it has never been hacked), I've never had a reason to mess with any of the files, but while I was talking the battery died. Plugged it in the charger and now all I get is this rainbow screen (screen that says DREA100 PVT 32B

. I've been messing around it for hours now and I seem to be getting no where. I tried wiping the phone. It still boots up to this. I tried over and over and over again to get to the boot loader sceen (holding the camera key + pushing the power key). It keeps bringing me back to the same screen. I am lost. Any help would be great.
I've also done ALT+L and ALT+W numerous times...nothing..Same screen.
The rainbow screen is the bootloader screen. If you reboot holding the Camera or Back button down, that's what you should see. If the phone is constantly rebooting into the bootloader screen, you might want to see if the camera button is stuck against the outer case shell?
Before it goes to the rainbow screen.
No image file found! (gray colored screen) flashes for a milisecond
Doing this with the back cover off. the camera button is not stuck. clicking just fine.
And what if you boot up holding down the home button? Does it enter the recovery screen?

Yup. I can get to the screen where I see all my "ALT+" options.
Take your microsd out of the Dream, put it in a card reader, and put a full RC33 update.zip on it (in case you've not done this before, make sure you rename the file to update.zip before putting it on the sdcard). Then plug the card back into Dream, reboot into recovery, and perform an Alt+W, Alt+S. Seems like your /system/recovery.img might have been corrupted or something.

Thank you for being so helpful so far. It's really kind of you! I will try that right now.
So I tried what you said, and I got further than I ever did but nothing.
So I copied the file on a newly formatted card. Renamed it update.zip like usual. Rebooted the phone with home+power. did the update. And this time, it actually went thru the whole process. Even said installation complete. said to press home+back to reboot like usual. Did that. Got the picture of the arrow and the chip. then rebooted by iteself, moved to the picture with the box and loader bar, and then reboots RIGHT BACK to the rainbow screen.
Repeated the process. Exactly the same thing again...jeez.

Follow steps 1-6 under "Preparing to Get Root". For step 1, use a cardreader instead of the mount option.

I followed that process, and even though the .nbh file is on the card, the phone won't go into bootloader mode....
holding the camera key and pressing power just brings me to the rainbow screen.
Did you name the file DREAIMG.NBH? The instructions say to name it "DREAMIMG.NBH" but I believe that is incorrect.

Yeah, that's the reason I am working so hard on it, I bought it in November from someone on craigslist. No way T-Mobile is going to warranty it for me.

Are you a current T-Mo customer? If so, maybe they can cut you a break.
I am. Like I said, my g1 was completely stock, didn't unlock, didn't mess with it all. Kinda sucks what happened. It's so strange.
the only answer is that the guy that sold it to you had root access and then went back to stock g1 and did something wrong in the process.
Hi hpichris. I had this exact same problem last week with my G1: it just popped into this rainbow screen one time when I was restarting it, with the same quick "image not found" message. I called T-Mobile tech support and they didn't have much to offer. They asked me to check whether the camera button was stuck (it wasn't), and then the tech support lady told me it was "a known issue" with some of the early produced G1s (I bought mine almost immediately after it came out). And that was it, they didn't have any other fixes, so they sent me a replacement. It's seems like its a hardware issue, especially if your attempts to reflash it have failed.
I recommend calling them, telling them what's up, and maybe they'll give you a new one for a discount.
Oh, and by the way, never rooted the phone, never moded or damaged it in anyway. The phone just broke.
I agree with jashu, the RC29 image should work. (I had this happen before too) remember to use a card reader or have a ferrite core on your USB cable, the first time around my RC29 image file somehow became corrupted during transfer, and the flash failed causing more complications.
hey guys i have a g1. its rooted.
i tried to get the latest custom radio. but idk why after wiped and then i used update frm sd. its did something then asked to reboot to finish installation . then the "Unboxing and an arrow to phone" came up. and its not going away .. its always there... i removed the battery fone ... tried to go to the recovery mode. nothing works .......
Need HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You said you cannot get into recover home + power
Can you get into the bootloader?? (camera + power)
If you can't boot into either of theese modes, then you probably bricked your phone during your radio update
nope.. i tried. the same screen comes up...
so there is no way to fix it now?
If you search around the forums abit there's a couple things you can try that will work in the chance that somehow it's just a softbrick....
However, not being able to boot with camera + power or home + power , is usually a sign of a brick
i think i got a softbrick.... cause its not the G1 sign.. the installation sign thats on the screen.. "Unboxing and an arrow to phone"
anyhow tnx dude

Doesn't matter what you can see on-screen, if you can't get in to the SPL (home+camera) and can't boot the phone itself, then the thing's dead. Simple as.
Only way to fix that is to take it back to HTC/Tmo and say that's what happened after an OTA update, or replace the motherboard.
What radio were you trying to flash? One from the Hero?
not looking good :/
That part where you said unboxing.. by forever did you mean atleast 10 minutes? sometimes this part can take forever.. If you yanked the battery while it was still updating the radio odds are you're sol :/
Also did you have the correct spl installed? sadly jacking up the radio install is the easiest way to perma brick your phone...
i tried to flash this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552591
then i tough it'll be better if used the latest radio as that ask... so i used "update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22-signed" i pasted it on my sd. then used update frm sd zip...
the installed and asked to reboot.. i did then i installed but that the end that screen came up =/
So in short you tried to update a G1 with a Hero radio image. I think that's the first time I seen this one. Not sure where to point you too at this point.....

The "ROM Flashing for dummies" book? ;P
Moral of this story, don't flash radio images intended for other devices!!...Or ROMs for that matter. They won't brick but without the required drivers they aren't going to work.
so thats it.................. i just leave it like that......... trash that fone? lol
that radio was a mistake.. i didnt read that name.. i thought it was for g1's htc rom.. but w.e
tell what should i do... just leave it till i get a solution?

Depending on how long you've had the phone, if it's been less than a year, you could call T-Mobile and say something to the affect of, your phone said it needed to reboot to apply an update and now it's stuck on this screen etc.. etc.. , and they would probably issue you a replacement, however if you get caught doing this, they could charge you an additional fee, and this is probably considered an insurance scam, you can decide what you'd like to do on your own, I just wanted to throw that little disclaimer in
nice to you find such matter funny.
anyhow ... i press and held the track ball and hit power button.. the blue like came out and the screen is black... O-o is that a good sign?
please help guys
Trackball does nothing but put it into "blue light mode", the ones you need working are home+power & camera+power. there are several pseudo solutions that claim to work even if these key combinations don't and perhaps they do for a few that are only softbricked. But, there are several hundred people with G1's in paperweight mode who'd beg to differ.
Alas, you've got alot of reading ahead of you, which could have been avoided had you done more reading in the first place :/
My suggestion, being that it seems you're fairly new, with a fairly new phone is follow jackslim's advice above and do alot more research next time...
thank you all of you...
ill go talk to T-mobile tomorrow see if they are able to help...=/
but i just wanned to show how the screen looks like
http://i27.tinypic.com/10rskyx.jpg
once again thanks for the advice
kinda odd tho. have you tried putting rc29's DREAIMG.NBH on the sd and holding camera+power...
Edit: then again, a hero radio on a "not hero" could definitely cause "odd"
oh and don't forget to atleast wipe your sd before going to t-mobile....
Recently rooted my G1 this week and installed cyanogen mod. everything's good.
I saw some cool themes and tried to install em. didn't work so just restored my back up.
Then i read that i have to be on RC30 to use the theme. I followed this guide:
http://www.intomobile.com/2008/11/1...on-your-t-mobile-g1-and-keep-root-access.html
phone gets stuck at tmobile G1 splash screen. i think hey, no prob, ill just go back to recovery and restore my back up again. take out, put in battery. home+power... uhh that's not working. even tried pressing the power+camera buttons. pressing the call+menu+end button isn't even rebooting it..
this... really sucks. is there ANYTHING i can do to fix this? maybe through adb or something? i have nandroid files backed up my computer too if that helps

There is something you can do 2 legal and 2 illegal
1) You could steal someone elses phone
2) You could buy a new phone
3) You could switch the motherboard out from another (non-bricked) G1 into your phone
And 4) You could breAk into HTC HQ and steal the machine they used to originally flash your phone with, connect it to your phone's JTAG' points and flash. Thisnis the most risky and most expensive because you ARE stealing, you ARE going to get sued, BUT you will have your phone back

thanks! ill consider it. i like your thinking!
anyone else!? pff
Ok i just got a free g1, im acually on att and all my phones have been winmo htc phones, even done a few custom roms for myself.
Anyways i got this phone thinking #1, i can unlock like any other htc phone fairly east to work with att? Second of all it keeps booting up and i see a triangle and a ! in the middle. When i hold down alt l and try to restore factory settings then reboot it goes to the same screen the error im getting is E: cant open /cache/recovery/command. So idk what to do from here i dont want any custom roms or anything honestly just want to unlock the phone and play with android, guessing something is horribly wrong with the rom on this phone.
Also this probably sounds really dumb but i dont see an SD slot on this phone its a t-mobile branded g1. Im not sure if its suppose to have one or what? The only thing i see is a place to insert the sim card right below the battery. If this phone doesnt have an sd slot am i screwed as far has getting it all fixed up.
Basically i know nothing about android this was a free phone figured it would make a good back up or replacement to my ATT fuze if i ended up like Android better than WinMo. Sorry for all the lame ass questions but im pretty clueless and would just like to get this phone running as quickly as possible so i can start playing with android and learn what im doing.

You probably wont like this answer but you posted in the wrong forum. You really need to figure out how to search because the answer you seek is not a simple one. I would first start searching (maybe try Google) as to where the SD slot is located.
http://www.google.com/search?aq=f&q=g1+user+manual
would have saved you some confusion
as an xda member, i'd expect you to post in the right forum... LOL
the sd slot is underneath a cover below the green (send) button.
I find it easier to open the keyboard and pull on the tab on the upper left corner of the chin.
As to the rom, I'd suggest that you go into fastboot and flash a rom from there (boot while holding camera)
to flash in fastboot, use
Code:
flash_image (type) whatever.img

Seriously, he had no clue as to where the sd card was located, do you expect him to have downloaded the SDK and have fastboot setup? I really think he needs to search as it is more complicated than it seems.

sorry, if i posted in the wrong forum i googled xda g1 forum and just clicked it.
As for slashing the ting im really trying to avoid that. Like i said i know nothing about android. The first few times i turned the phone on on it worked fine, just told me to insert sim card. Then i got home turned it on to really start messing with it and it just wouldnt boot and has kept giving me that error, i have no idea why i didnt try to flash the thing or anything like that. Ive held down alt l, as per searching the net went to the restore factory defualt option the phone seems to format then when i reset it i get the same error and can only turn the phone off by removing the battery.
Sorry like i said i know these are all idiot questions, sorry about posting in the wrong forum originally, like i said just did a quick google and posted i was on my way out the door. I just want to get the phone working stock and go from there. Phone seemed to be just fine at one point, i didnt do anything to it, i couldnt even get past please insert sim, so idk why im even getting this error at all. Basically the little searching i did do a few days ago made it seem like it had to do with flashing and updating which i definately did not do.
from what I understand in your post you only "half setup" your phone
( got as far as being asked for sim )
try pressing ALT+w when at the " triangle ! "
this should do a factory data reset, and next time you boot it will set up your phone from the begining

Thank you for the help but ive alread tried alt w and going back to defualts with alt l. Everytime the thing reboots after reseting defualts it goes back to that triangle screen. and when i press alt l it shows the error i mentioned before..
try this
http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/Unbrick
The "triangle screen" is the recovery mode. That error about recovery/command always shows up, it's no big deal.
Are you holding any buttons while you boot? Holding home while turning the phone on gets you to recovery (your triangle screen), holding camera gets you to fastboot. You just want to boot normally.
If the G1 isn't rooted, you won't be able to get past the initial setup screen unless you've got a T-Mobile sim in it. Once you get to the sim error, you've made progress from what you've said here though. If you can get back to that, search around. I seem to recall that some people here run their G1 without a sim, so perhaps you can find out how they did it.

I've had a problem lately too where my screen will go white, while apps still seem to continue running.
Sometimes, just turning off the screen, then sliding it open will fix it. Other times I have to pull the battery.
As of yesterday, I can also no longer read any memory card in the phone. I think its time for a new phone. I just passed that 2 year expiration date.

I think the problem are the 2 screen connectors. You must open the screen part of the cover and tighten the conectors.
Good luck.
