Dream Themes Question - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1) Do the themes that say they are for 4.1.999 also work for 4.1.99 ??
2) and also, if I install a theme, and I ever want to go back to the original theme, how would I?
3) or should I upgrade to 4.1.999 since im already on 4.1.99 ?

1. Probably. It may vary by theme.
2. The easiest way to go back to stock is to make a nandroid backup of it without the theme. Either that or just reflash the rom. (however if you continue running .99, I think you have to reflash the htc as well. Not positive on that one.)
3. Yes you should upgrade. If you already have .99, all you need to flash is the .999 file. There were a few bigger fixes in .999 such as bluetooth function. I would say yes, upgrade.

How to upgrade rom after I applied a theme?

I don't really understand the way themes work. Do they just replaced some of the resource files? Or do they replaced some of the apks? Then How do I cleanly remove a theme? Just flash the same version of ROM back? Won't there be some files only belong to the theme itself still left in the phone?
And what will happen when I try to upgrade the Rom with a theme installed? Will it roll back to the original theme, as all the resource replaced with the new Rom? And if I still want to use this theme, just flash one with the new version?
I am just confused, will themes add files not belong to the rom itself, then just upgrade or reflash without a wipe might not be able to clean the theme. But a wipe is the last thing I am gonna do.
Right now, I am using CM 4.01 with Teds Hero Theme, and I really want to upgrade to CM 4.02, but these questions confused me for a long time, I just need a positive answer, then I can flash and move on.
Thanks
A theme has modified images and files of the rom. when you flash a theme it writes over the original files with the edited ones. you should be ok with flashing cm 4.0.2 then flashing the 4.0.2 version of your theme.
If you are really curious what all a theme changes just open up your theme and look at what files are in it.
plain jane answer to your question.
make a nandroid backup (that way if something does go wrong you have a stable version to go back to if you are not ready to wipe to fix it)
flash cm 4.0.2
flash 4.0.2 version of theme.
if nothing goes wrong then you are good
Thanks for the reply, I'm going to give it a try~

I rooted my phone, now what?

I've seen some pretty cool mods of the g1 out there, but how do I do it? For example how do I change my home screen, how do I tether, and what are the best roms? And if I do change the rom, will i have to root again?
Thank You

Cyan recovery 1.4
Cyan ROM 4.0.4
Nandroid Backup
AFTER all of that you can install a theme in the theme forum but make sure it is made for Cyan 4.0.4 and if you have problems do a restore using nandroid.
If you want specific instructions on each of these then look through the guides.
You will find a link for tethering in the cyan thread.
DO NOT skip the nandroid backup step.
Cyan? Is that a rom? Will I need to root my phone again to add that? I'm running jf 1.5 DP, if that helps...
First, give yourself a clap on the back, you did better than most
No you will not have to root again since by rooting you are turning your security off, the only way to unroot is to go back to using a stock provider build
Next a rom is a custom android build
The name rom sticks with us from our win mobile days
Yes cyanogen is the name of the dev who self named is rom also

[Q] Some general paranoid questions about rooting my N1

Hello,
Since a while I have a Nexus One(Bought in the Netherlands from Vodafone, with FRF91). And when I heard about
the ability to use the FM Radio on it using CyanogenMod I started thinking about replacing it's stock rom
with CyanogenMod. I have some previous experience with custom ROM's on my ADP1 and have been doing some research but still have some questions. Thats what this post is for.
I want to flash CyanogenMod because I want: FM Radio, ability to do full backups, theming and tuning the trackball notifications.
So first question: Besides these what are the most important benefits of flashing CyanogenMod to my N1?[Q1]
I also want to be able to completely undo the whole process in case I need the warranty or just want to go back for whatever reason. So here is my current todo list to get what I want:
Step 1) Use Super One Click RATC program to get root without unlocking the bootloader(and thus keeping warranty).
If I understand correctly this program will use the RATC exploit in ADB to get ADB with root previliges, push the su program and install the Superuser app, correct?[Q2]
Does the unroot button completely undo this process without leaving any trace?[Q3]
Step 2) Install ROM Manager app from market.
Step 3) Flash ClockworkMod Recovery using ROM Manager app.
Is it possible to backup/reflash the original stock recovery image that my Nexus came with?[Q4]
I found a mediafire page somewhere with the file "Passion-VF-FRF91.zip". Would this be the original rom image my phone came with(Netherlands, Vodafone, FRF91) or are all European Vodafone N1s the same?[Q5]
Step 4) Backup complete phone using nandroid from ClockworkMod recovery.
Will this backup my radio (and hboot if it gets overwritten?) too?[Q6]
Step 5) Flash CyanogenMod using ROM Manager.
Is there a way to migrate my app data(settings and save games) from my stock install to the new CyanogenMod install?[Q7]
Step 6) Live happily ever after.
Any answers to my questions or general tips are appreciated. I might sound paranoid but I just want to be on the safe side of things and not brick my brand new $600 phone.
Thanks
What a load of questions you have...
1. "Extra customizability" and functionality that stock ROM doesn't have.
2. Yes.
3. Don't know, probably so. It doesn't matter anyway.
4. Yes.
5. Don't know, but again, why do you care? It doesn't matter. Just back up your own personal ROM with the recovery.
6. No radio and no hboot.
7. Titanium backup.
8. You're WAY too paranoid. Stop worrying about stuff so much. It's only stuff, even if it costs $600.
And read my signature...
Not sure when the SLCD screens started coming in, but if your custom recovery is black after installing, you will need to install Among Ra 1.9 instead... (you may be OK with FRF91, though).

[Q] Not sure about installing themes/ROMs

Recently I installed the ROM Cognition, and want to theme this ROM.
As I understand, I download the theme, rename to 'update.zip', and install via recovery mode just like I did the ROM.
Here is where my question comes into play:
1. Some themes say they only are compatible with certain numbers/letters, such as: J16, JFW or things like this. How do I know if my phone will work with specific themes? I want to make sure that I do not brick my phone.
2. If I want to install a new ROM on my phone, should I flash with Odin back to Eclair 2.1, re-root, and install the new ROM? Or can I do this from ROM Manager with a backup of my Apps on Titanium Backup (and how do you export this to work on new ROMS)?
Thanks in advance
you should not be renaming ANYTHING to update.zip. you should be flashing roms and themes through clockwork mod recovery....
Yeah you're right. Can I go from one ROM to another without flashing back with Odin though?
In most cases you can flash one rom over another successfully.
1. Some themes say they only are compatible with certain numbers/letters, such as: J16, JFW or things like this. How do I know if my phone will work with specific themes? I want to make sure that I do not brick my phone.
Need to check what type of modem/kernel you have currently on your phone for compatibility. Go to Settings -> About Phone and look for the last three letters under Baseband Version - that will tell you if <x> Theme will work for your phone.
Also - it is highly suggested that you backup your framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk before attempting to run the theme. This will prevent you from having to re-flash your entire phone. (Will need to use root explorer and be familiar with ADB commands to do this)
Make sure to follow the instructions on the person who created the theme. Most will tell you to use ROM Manager to install the theme.zip. Unless they specifically tell you to rename it to update.zip - don't.
2. If I want to install a new ROM on my phone, should I flash with Odin back to Eclair 2.1, re-root, and install the new ROM? Or can I do this from ROM Manager with a backup of my Apps on Titanium Backup (and how do you export this to work on new ROMS)?
It is highly suggested that you ODIN 1 Click back to stock before updating to a new ROM. If it is just an update then sure you would be able to install over the top of the existing ROM.
Although you "could" install a new ROM over the top of the "old" ROM - you could very likely have issues - starting fresh with going back to Stock prevents you from having any issues that might arise over flashing a new ROM.
Baseband of modem has nothing to do with compatibility of themes. You could be using a jpy or jk3 Rom framework base and be using the same jl3 or jk4 modem which is what is reflected in baseband version under about phone.
If Rom developer is nice they will reflect framework base in the build number, otherwise they usually say in the op for the Rom.

Aha I stand corrected.
Although... before all the modem mix/matching started happening - it was a decent way to check what you were running.
Spose you would have to check the chef/dev before figuring it out like the dood above me said

[Q|Help] Finally Rooted. [Fascinate|CM7|Minimal Magic]

Yes. I finally rooted my phone.
After 6 months of use.
Anyway, I used the "Super-One-Click" method to root. Got SuperUser permission and all that. Which, apparently, signifies that I have root access now. amirite?
k
Now. I downloaded a rom/theme I want applied to my phone. Called "Minimal Magic."
It's like sleek and simplistic. Black and white. Which is what I want for the Launcher that I'm using. (Launcher7)
So after a little research on my own.
I know that I need:
-a version of CyanogenMod.
-to back up current ROM stuff.
-reboot in recovery? to flash the rom.
Rooting wasn't hard and I didn't feel like I would brick it or lose any data/files.
But seeing the process of flashing a rom AFTER rooting. Idk. It's making me a little iffy.
From my understanding. It's going to "wipe" the entire rom that I'm currently running on my Fascinate. [2.1-update]
And flash this CyanogenMod rom? (Was thinking about getting CM6)
So when it flashes and assuming everything goes well, it's gonna be like a factory reset, but with a different rom, which I can apply the .apk I downloaded earlier of Minimal Magic for CM. But my launcher or settings won't be loaded, so I'd have to go back in and re-add everything? Update all the settings again and get everything back to normal, just with a different theme.
Maybe someone can walk me through this?
You need a rom that has the theme chooser (cm7) which minimal magic os compatible with. I'm running the theme right now. Yes you have to wipe, factory reset & all & yes you need a recovery to do this. When I first rooted I used the free app from the market called rom manager & I flashed the recovery that rom manager has which is clockword. I used this to backup my current stock rooted rom then I flashed the first new rom I used then after wiping. True enough you're responsible for what happens to your phone but I can say as long as you don't do anything really weird or stupid you should be fine...now I still use that recovery & I'm running aospcmod on my hero cdma sooooo roms, the process & blah blah could be different for your phone ....I hope this helps some

So, contacts, sms, photo ID's. Stuff like that will be gone?
I wish I didn't have to re-apply all my settings.
Also, I saw a video of a guy flashing a new rom. All of his apps were gone, since..obviously it was like a factory reset. That means I'ma have to install allll the apps I downloaded before, again? D:

Yes, but you can use apps like Titanium Backup (its not free, but the best there is), to backup all your apps and restore them later.
It also backs up sms, etc. but it is not guaranteed that it can be restored on a totally different rom.
btw: Use edit for a more descriptive title please something with your device and maybe CM7 and minimal magic.
