ok i bought my sandisk 8gb class 6 card a few weeks ago and its been working until the last ROM i flashed, and everything has been force closing. so i took it out and tried to reformat it and it wont format in windows vista, xp, parted (from the G1), my friends htc touch pro, or a blackberry.
parted shows the 2 partions on there currently (fat32 and ext3) but wont let me remove them. wtf!
im at work so i cant try to format it in linux or Gparted, i can try that when i get home.
any ideas?
I had the same problem, and finally just gave up. Some additional things I tried:
SDFormatter - http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/eula/
Formatting from the command prompt - C:\format <drive letter>
gparted in Linux - I know you said you were going to try this, but I did, and had no luck.
I hate to say it, but that might be the end of your sd card.
i tried in Puppy linux in Gparted and it shows the fat32 and ext3 partitions, but they have locks next to both of them and i cant delete or edit them.
i then booted to a Gparted cd and it shows the same things as in Puppy Linux, but they arent locked. i delete them, hit apply, it acts like it deletes them, but then they're still there.
try flashing amon_ra's newest recovery image. you can partition with one click in the recovery console directly on your g1

how do i get out of boot loop or remedy..its actually stuck on the hero splash
Re-wipe
then re flash
i just did that...same thing
It's probably an issue with your EXT2. When it's looping it is looking for the app_s & app folders and if your sdcard isn't mounted properly it will loop until it can see you EXT. You should completely wipe your EXT2 and reflash the build.
ok step by step..how did u install ur hero rom....because i used to and never had these problems b4....
wipe device then flash now when your done flashing dont reboot...remove sd card then boot up! it might reboot once but that is okay just leave it and let it load when all done re-insert sd card!
yea i did that...but as soon as i restart or do the app2sd...it freezes at the hero splash...i give up...cuz even with the sd card out and hero running...it was super sluggish..unresponsive and annoying...lol
the error wat my fault...i figured my prob...but those hero roms are too slow...like i wonder wat these guys talk about when they say its fast...faster than before? which was snail...so now its turtle?..lol
having the exact same issue any1 found an fix for this ?
from the console in recovery type this
mke2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2

is this in adb as i can't seem to get adb to find my phone but yet fastboot works fine
is there any externaly apps that i can download that will do this ?
try madacos hero rom. fastest ****ing thing ever. seriously. it just takes a while to boot and to get fast because your phone needs to GET USED to the hero roms. heres the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=555624
cheers for the link i just want to be able to use my 8gb card and cant the 4gb works fine went through the same procedure as the 4gb 1 to the 8gb 1 must be some issue
what exactly is wrong with your 8gig card? if all else fails, reformat it and repartition it. only takes like 15 min. thatways it starts from scratch essentially. its what i had to do because i got constand fc' while running hero roms. i got these process.android.media ones every 3 minutes when doing ANYTHING. yeah reformatting and repartitioning is always your last resort saftey net

ok first off ive used ravs recovery image 1.2.1g formatted my sd card with it fat32 extention 2 and swap, ive done that about 5 times now but as soon as hero loads it goes straight into a loop this is only with the 8gb card, stick the 4gb card in and it works fine so i don't know what the issue is with the 8gb
After following the guide to installing a partition using Ubuntu i go to connect my g1 to my computer and it says it is not formatted right. it also says the same thing on my g1. Any ideas what went wrong?
I'd try re-partitioning using the instructions from JACHero thread.

I got that error message using the gparted in ubuntu as well.
1. what type of partitions are you going for?
2. If you are doing a fat32 and an ext2 they have to be in <-- that order on the card
3. If you are adding the linux swap .. well I placed mine in between the Fat32 and the ext2 partitions and worked just fine (tested with the # free)
also the ONLY way that I was able to get it right was to start completely over and try another method altogether .. so reformat the ENTIRE card using ubuntu back to fat32 and then for good measure do it again with quick format on the PC (cant hurt)
then you follow this here (this worked for me):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3582509&postcount=52
this will give you the fat32 and the exts2 partitons right from your phone and I have never had a problem mounting it to my PC after that method. IF you mess up the partition size you can re-do it ... its in the tutorial as well.
NOTE: I did the sdplit first and then I added the swap partition after using Ubuntu .. which worked fine and evern resized the other partitions too and no problems... go figure
Sorry if this has been adressed before, but i did use the search and i cannot quite figure out what to do next. I might have dropped my phone the other day, and since then none of my apps run from the SD becase it thinks that it was ejected. So, i wiped and installed a clean JackXrom again, and it was fine for about 20 min, then phone locked up, and when i restarted, i get the same problem. Should i format the partitions on the card perhaps? I was trying to avoid that, so any work around would be helpfull.
Latest radio, spl. Class 6 8 gig SD card.
Thanks.

If it only happened once it shouldn't be an issue, but if it does it wouldn't hurt to format your ext.
In recovery
mount -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
rm -r /system/sd/*
I tried repairing my ext, no luck.
Whenever i try to mount in recovery console i get error : No such file or directory

Sounds like you need to delete the partition and make a new one, as it can't be read. If you're going to use parted from you're phone then you'll probably have to start over and recreate fat (and linux-swap if you had one) too. If you're using paragon or Gparted you should be able to recreate just your ext.
I cant recall which tutorial i fallowed, but it was all done through the terminal or recovery. Could you possibly point me to the right thread?

if you can remember the start and end of youre ext partition i think you can do this in parted by typing print then note down the start and end then type mkpartfs primary ext2 start - end

Here you go, follow the second section.
http://android-simplicity.blogspot.com/2009/08/how-to-6-how-to-partition-your-sdcard.html
Everytime i try to mount in recovery i get "mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /sdcard failed: device or resource busy"
I'm lost.
pull your battery our for 30 seconds or so. remove your sd card then reinsert it and then try again. if that doesnt work then do what the others guys have said and try to reformat your sd card and start from scratch.

Actually, with Parted you can just rm and mkpartfs any partition you want without affecting the other partitions.
I bit the bullet and just formated all the partitions.
Thanks anyways guys.
My advice for next time or any body else reading would be to download a live CD for ubuntu or fedora or similar and boot your PC off that - it's graphical and v. easy.
Or just dump windows altogether and go for linux ;-)
Smiffy.

Yeah Gparted is amazing problem is then you have to walk the person through downloading, burning the image...which can be painful.
This is still happening, fresh format on sd card partitios and a wipe and clean install of Jacxrom.
Bad sd card? Or the phone?
JACxROM [v1.3]
I am attempting to flash to this ROM. Everything seems to go as describen in other posts, but when I power up the phone, I never make it past the splash screen. Any thoughts??
sorry
Sorry I posted this in the wrong place, I will move it.

Bump, dead SD card?
partition corrupted anyway to recover?
I need help please!
I was running cyanogen 4.0.3.1 just installed today morning then changed theme to enoch 1.12 the newest one that worked fine. Updated the browser to loccys Then installed the HTC music and when finally rebooted the phone it was working fine until I noticed I had none of my apps on the sdcard.
All I have is syste/app folder which runs internally I think everything else does not work. It's like my sdcard is not in.
I shutdown rebooted and waited. Then removed sdcard rebooted and inserted the card one fully powered on and it is saying it wants to format it.
I get home turn my ubuntu system on and it detects it as a ext3 partition yet nothing inside. and now no fat32 partition or linux-swap.
anyways to recover or am I SOL?
So, I got a 4GB sdcard the other day. It came out of a blackberry a friend of mine was using. I formatted the card to FAT32 with the utility in windows 7, and everything seemed to be fine. I downloaded ext2fsd to be able to copy my ext partition to my new card. I followed the directions from the website about mounting the ext partition.
After I performed the steps above, my sdcard became unusable. I tried to take it out, and put it back in my card reader, and I get an error saying windows needs to format the drive, if I try to format it, it doesn't work. I've tried in gparted as well, and also get an error. I even tried from Amon's revorery, and sdparted in the console. I don't get errors with the latter two, but my card reader still says it's RAW.
I know that was lengthy, but I'm trying to figure out anymore steps to take, or if I should just throw the card away.
Thanks
ok..
wow.
You have to have 3 partitons. If you only format it with 1 partiton, you cant save data on a partition that doesnt exsist.
You have to go to recovery console and make a fat32, ext3 and linux swap partion.
I dont have the patience to go trhough it all with you because its in 100 different threads so .. use search?
Not trying to be rude, but this is stuff you can fin don your own here very easily if you werent expecting someone to do it for you
EDIT-- sorry, dont think i read fully what you did. I had this same thing happen today on a friends brand new 8gb.
HEres what I did since you have Amen ras recovery..
Format to just FAT32.
Turn on usb
give it a second to pop up and it will and check the size.
Then turn off the usb, go into parted on console, rm 1, then remake all 3 partitons according to the size of the card.
I suggest not using the full partiton in the recovery because it usualy screws up the swap.
From there you will be fine.
If it doesnt work that way, then im sorry, the card may be pooped or to low a class maybe?

Yeah, I know you're not trying to be rude, but I know I need 3 partitions. I'm pretty aware of the way a sd card needs to be partitioned. I've tried everything mentioned. I think it's about time to call it quits. It's a class 2 card, so I don't think that's the issue, and I can't format in Ubuntu, or Windows. Oh well I suppose. Thanks.
You can try this app. Its called Sd formatter...it reformats the SD. IT worked for me.

I forgot to include this in the original list of things I tried, but I did give it a go. It is telling me the card is write-protected even though the switch on the adapter is set to the unlocked position. I've also tried it with a different adapter. I appreciate everybody's input.
well try using parted commands to write from block 0 to the last block and partition the whole thing as fat32
is that not working?
did you tried partitioning with RA 1.2.3 recovery?
@B-man007
I haven't tried writing the whole thing to FAT32 with parted. I'll give that a try tonight (don't have the card with me).
@cholito
I'm using RA 1.2.2, I think the script is the same, so I don't know that it would make a difference if I was using that or 1.2.3

I don't think you want to format your card through the computer (ie windows xp). I would install the Amon RA recovery and then you can format your card just using the phone. Or do a search on UBUNTU for dummy's.
Are you formatting from windows, linux, osx, or the phone? You say "through the g1" but add "eject itself of the comp and then i remount it"
Does the G1 say damageded sd, or does it just not format leaving all your old files?
Is your phone rooted? If so, install RA-recovery-1.2.3 and try that. It has all the format options included. If not try a linux live cd such as ubuntu which includes gparted. Alright well qwerty3656 already suggested that. Guess I should have finished this post before going to fix some coffee
Ubuntu for dummies? lol. You must have a disability if you cant use Ubuntu. Run GParted if thats the way you want to go, but doing it that way is over the top harder than it needs to be. I also would recommend you download and install the Amon RA Recovery Image.
In Terminal run:
Code:
su (Hit Enter and allow SU permission if you haven't already)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.2.3.img (Hit Enter)
reboot recovery (Hit Enter)
Then from the recovery menu choose repartition SD with just a Fat32 or repartition with a Fat32, Ext2, and Swap. You can then reboot
Much agreed. I use RA's recovery image over cm1.4 for the quick (very quick) format options. I've used gparted with GNOME based Linux distros and it can be a headache, especially when it fails to format properly several times in a row
PuppyLinux Live
Puppy Linux Live is another great distro for doing these sort of things. Once you have it on cd it takes about 2 minutes to go through the boot process and no need to install to hdd(great if using someone elses pc). Use the partition manager, just remember to hit apply after EACH change to the sd partitions. Delete a partition(Hit apply) delete another partition(hit apply), create.....apply apply apply. I've had almost no problems using this method, hitting apply just speeds things up.
And yes I have Ubuntu as well, but for some reason i have issues from time to time with gParted as well. Puppy's also great as you can boot right from a jump drive, or usb-sd adapter(as long as your hardware supports it).
