New MicroSD card, How to keep Apps2SD working? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I can't seem to find any info on this in the search, but I apologize if I missed it
Heres the deal, I'm currently running CyanogenMod 4.1.9999 with Apps2SD on an 8gb Class 4 MicroSD
I just ordered a new Class 6 16gb card and I wanted to know how I could properly transfer all my data and apps from my current card to the new one when it gets here? Would it be as simple as an xcopy in windows? How do I make sure I can get the partitions transferred over properly?
Thanks

Wrong section. Regardless, do adb pulls of files on your sdcard. Partition new card and adb push them back. Of course there are more complications such as when to insert your sdcard. Make sure your phone is turned off when inserting new sdcard

Sorry about that, but how do I do an "adb pull"?

here you go. search please! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010

Thanks! I really appreciate it!

No problem. Good luck. Welcome to XDA. Make sure you post in the correct section next time.

Noob Question - Don't flame, Just looking for help.. - sd card troubles

Hi,
I've had an att fuze for a long while and the flashing is wayyyy different on that thing.
I've read all the FAQ stuff out there but can't get anything to work.
I already bought 2 micro sd cards.
I downgraded the RC to 29, and then it erased my data on the original 1GB card. I forgot to make a backup on accident.
I went to the thread that taught me how to get the hero ROSIE rom on the phone, and it said I needed 2 sd cards. Now, I went to buy a new SD card.
So the original card is blank, and the new card is blank, when I plug it into the phone, windows does not recognize it, nor does the phone.
If I boot up the phone with the old card inside of it, that starts up fine, but it is completely blank.
SO i'm kind of stuck at the part where you need to format the sd card, I have 2 micro sd cards that are blank, and windows cannot recognize them.
Any help to get me up and running would be greatly appreciated.
So you're pretty much starting from a clean slate then? I think your next step is to first format one of the sd cards with ext2. So you're going to have to find the articles here on how to do it. I recommend going the route of using a linux portable cd like GPARTED to make the partition on the SD Card.
After you do that, copy the extracted app_s to the ext2 partition using the directions provided. Pretty much.. go from there with the nice articles we have.
I honestly didn't use two SDCards. I used adb to put the new update.zip containing the hero rom and just reflashed.
HMMM
i am so damn lost right now... a linux live cd? you can't do this from a windows vista pc?
In the future please search, and post in the correct thread/forum. Thank you.
I'm pretty much trying to follow the directions perfectly to get this ROSIE UI on the phone, but the problem is i've read all the tutorials, but the phone cannot recognize my sd cards, and windows can't recognize it at all.
So i can't really do any steps because the phone isnt recognizing anything, i've tried windows, and a couple of other programs to get the card formatted, but no luck.
Sorry mod. i'm pretty active on the other phone communities on this forum, but am having a real hard problem with the g1. This post was my last resort. I've read a lot of FAQ's tutorials, instructions etc... i'm jsut kind of stuck thats why i'm making this new thread.

Rooting(forgot what to do) apps to sd 2

Hi, I rooted my phone like 4 or 5 months ago following a video tutorial to jf 1.5 and then I was browsing through the market and I saw an app called apps to sd 2 for 1 or 2 bucks. I dled it and it did something to my sd card called root:root and I went to the tutorial and I didn't know how to do anything. I guess I forgot how to root so I decided to just not do it. Now my sd card isn't readable so can somebody help me? I would love to have apps to sd work so can somebody tell me exactly what to do and just not the codes.
What's not readable? Your phone doesn't see it or your PC doesn't see it? What rom are you running? What spl/recovery?
I'll just assume that you're on JF's recovery and JF's rom for this, your card is just corrupted and that you know how to use ADB or at least terminal.
Go ahead and partition your card to FAT32 using either your phone or PC (depending on what your card is... you may be better off just getting another card (8gb class 6 are under $20)
Update your recovery to Cyan's latest one (1.41? don't quote me)
In recovery, follow this guide to get your card partitioned (you will only need fat32 and ext3 partitions for this).
Flash any rom that supports auto apps2sd (I suggest Cyan's 3.6.8.1, latest stable)
If you don't understand none of that stuff above - go read some guides, you're not ready for this.
Steps for everything that I suggested are described in numerous tutorials all over this forum.
Good luck

So I have to buy a new sd card? dang, ok, I guess I'll do that. And I cant access my card on my phone. When I go on my computer, everything is deleted except for the dcim folder and nothing is in it. I think my whole card restarted. There goes all my pictures and videos. I'm buying a 8gb sandisk mini sd + adapter and reader for $15+$3 shipping. is that a good deal?

As long as it's class 6 card - yeah... I heard that you can get 8gb class 6 on newegg.com for $15/free shipping... check it out.
But... once more... your card may be just fine (still do upgrade if it's not class 6, I can stress this enough). Are you on windows pc? Windows will not see ext partitions. Open up your terminal and type
$su
#busybox df -h
what's the output?
what about
ls system/sd
What's the output for this?
Hit me up on Gtalk I'll walk you thru this if you need me too

Switching SD Cards

Hello everyone,
I am new to the hero and just rooted my phone using kitchen. I wanted to get an 8GB card and wanted to know what the process was. I didn't want to mess anything up so how do I change micro sd cards. I did a search but was unable to find the answer.
Are you using apps 2 sd?
If yes there is a guide
If no, then copy your data to your pc.. unmount the card(or turn the phone off) .. insert new card, format... then copy stuff back.
cool, never used apps 2 sd. Thanks! Will wait to get a new rom after.
Just remember its a mounted filesystem, if you just took it out that would be like unhooking your computer's hard drive. Probably going corrupt some data.
So just make sure the phone is off before switching cards?
i just made that mistake last night, burnt up an 8gb card, make sure phone is off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't need to turn the phone off. Right in SD Card and Storage Settings, there's a button to unmount the SD card. Hit that button, eject the card, then put the new one in and copy all the data back on via USB.

You shouldn't have been able to burn a card doing that. Maybe confuse the filesystem on it. If worse comes to worst, reformat the sdcard.
What items on the SD card are necessary? I did the root and there are two recovery images on there. I haven't done anything else besides rooting the phone.
Sorry dumb question, rooting doesn't change when changing cards right?
Since there is an SDcard discussion. Every time I play music the songs glitch at the beginning of the track and sometimes mid song..but always at the start UNLESS the phone is awake, then it plays fine.
Could it be the class of the card or that the phone wakes up after the end of every track and glitches? I still have the stock 2 gig card and was looking to get a higher class / more capacity to swap if that is the case. if not I'll just stick to my ipod shuffle.. bleh.

Nothing on the SD card is strictly necessary. Rooting and applying ROMs does not affect the SD card.

Necessary? Nothing. The phone should run without the sdcard even installed. Some applications aren't going to like it not being there, like the camera.
New card partition question
Stock hero with new 8 gb card. Will be rooting and using fresh 2.0 and apps2sd. Question is: Do i need to partition the card first before rooting or will it happen on its own when i flash new rom? thanks

No and no.
You only need to partition the card if you want it partitioned and partitioning it has zero to do with rooting or with applying a new ROM.

Changing SD card, need to format?

Hey guys, this is my first post! I just picked up a nice 16gb micro sd card for my n1, was wondering whats the best way to copy things over from the old stock 4gb microsd. can I just mount the phone and drag and drop everything to the new card, or is there more that i should do?
I've read somewhere that you should format and partition it (Fat32+ext2+swap) through Recovery, but i'm not sure what to do. I'm currently on CM6 RC2. Thanks!
I did a direct copy from one card to another. And it worked just fine.

Confused about SD card, partitions, running off SD card etc...

Hey guys. I'm a noob to the nook. Got mine yesterday and flashed nookie froyo 0.6.8. Flashed auto nooter 3.0 before that (not sure that was necessary, but I did it anyway - Was it necessary?)
I digress... I'm confused about the sd card and from what I've read in the forum, it's still not clear to me. So here are my questions and I apologize if they were answered elsewhere. If someone could link a post that might be helpful that would be great!
1. Which roms run off the external sd card?
2. Is it better to run off the external sd card?
3. I'm using an 8 gig class 10 card, but only 1.78 is accessible and and less than 500 mb of open space is left.
4. NookcolorUMS is confusing. I've tried mounting all partitions and cant access the extra space. And yes I did format it after flashing so it's allocated using FAT32.
Any help or direction to helpful posts would be really greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

1. I think CM7, NookieFroyo, and the HC build have all been made to run off the SD.
2. I don't think so; it does give you the nice "sandbox" feel that you can't screw anything up though. It is MUCH faster to run off the internal memory; and with the multi boot ability in my opinion there really is no reason to run off an SD card.
3. I'd look at the card in some type of partition manager; there may be some partitions that can not be seen otherwise. Have you already flashed a rom to the card?
4. Not sure.

I flashed the image to the external sd card. It put the boot image after flashing on the card. I just reformatted the card and can now see it in the nook.
New questions.
1. Is there a way to create a nandroid back up?
2. How do I get to clockwork recovery without using the image on the sd card?
Maybe more questions later.
Thanks!

Multi-boot ability? I still have so much to learn. Is it basically a matter of rearranging the partitions on the internal storage? Would the best link be http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959461
?
Can the primary partition continue to boot stock unrooted Nook ROM?
* Go to the parallel Development Forum to find threads on:
- Multi-boot (very simple to install)
and
- SD card booting versions of CM7, Honeycomb and Froyo
* Within the thread of each of those three, you will find instructions for adjusting things (installing missing capabilities, partitions, etc).
* Download Free Easeus Partition Manager (sp?) to extend 4th partition while looking at SD card in Windows, this will give Android's /sdcard folder the rest of your card. Then Download Free Notepad++ (linux file format text editor) to edit a file as described in those threads. See threads for more details.
* Download Free Win 32 Disk Imager to backup SD card in Windows ("read" backs up card, "write" burns an image to card, the latter is how you create bootable ROM on SD card).
